About 2017 Audi Q5

4.1

Overall Rating

The 2017 Audi Q5 remains unchanged this year and only gets additional features for the Premium Plus and Prestige trims. Available for sale in 3 trim configurations with 3 engine options, the MSRP starts at $41,850. While the 0-60 MPH performance of the 2017 Q5 isn't the best in the segment, the impressive towing capacity and high MPG ratings even with the standard Quattro AWD makes it one of the popular offering for the segment.

The 2017 Audi Q5 gets the same specs as last year apart from the addition of additional features for higher trims. While the Premium Plus trim gets standard 19-inch five-arm star-design alloy wheels, the Q5 Prestige gets adaptive cruise control, a three-spoke multi-function steering wheel, and Audi Drive Select Vehicle setting as standard. Price starts at an MSRP of $41,850 as it sees a price hike of just $25.

The 2017 Q5 boasts a luxurious and spacious interior with 2 powerful and frugal engine options and the standard Quattro AWD drivetrain. We rank the 2017 Audi Q5 6th in our overall compact SUV rankings. The main concern for the Q5 is its high cost of ownership as compared to its rivals like the Volvo XC60.

We Recommend

The Audi Q5 Premium Plus 3.0T trim is the one to go for as it offers plenty more features along with the new alloy wheels, and the powerful V6 makes up for the lack of grunt with the base engine.

If you want a luxury car that can occasionally go on off-road adventures and jungle safaris, we would suggest you pick up the basic 2.0T Premium trim level. This trim level pampers you with luxury and also gives you the power and abilities to go off-roading. If you want a hardcore luxury SUV and are ready to shell out some extra bucks, get the top of the line 3.0T Prestige trim level.

2017 Audi Q5 Review

Pros

  • Peppy engine
  • Great handling
  • Superb driving dynamics
  • Practicality
  • Spacious seating
  • Generous Cargo volume
  • Competitive acceleration figures

Cons

  • Poor fuel economy numbers
  • Non-responsive Infotainment system
  • Outdated design

The 2017 Audi Q5 remains unchanged this year and only gets additional features for the Premium Plus and Prestige trims. Available for sale in 3 trim configurations with 3 engine options, the MSRP starts at $41,850. While the 0-60 MPH performance of the 2017 Q5 isn't the best in the segment, the impressive towing capacity and high MPG ratings even with the standard Quattro AWD makes it one of the popular offering for the segment.

Overview

Pricing and Features
8.0/10

The 2017 Audi Q5 is available for sale in 3 different trim configurations with the base 2.0T Premium trim starting at $41,850. The 2.0T Premium Plus is priced at $44,100 with the base engine and $47,350 with the V6. The next trim level comes with a larger and more powerful 3.0-liter supercharged V6 engine and is available to customers with a price tag of $54,150.

Standard features on all trims include 18-inch alloys, Xenon headlamps, automatic wipers, panoramic sunroof, eight-way powered front seats, leather upholstery, tilt-and-telescopic steering wheel and Audi's digital music interface. The Premium Plus trim now adds 19-inch alloys to the list and the V6 models get S-Line exterior styling and high-pressure headlamp washers as standard. The Prestige trim adds a B&O surround music system, adaptive headlights, the Audi Drive Select vehicle system, and driver safety aids like a blind-spot monitor & adaptive cruise control.

Engine and Performance
8.6/10

The 2017 Audi Q5 comes with two engine options i.e. is a 2-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and a 3-liter supercharged V6 engine. The 2-liter engine makes about 220 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, while the V6 produces 272 hp and 295 lb-ft. The V6 also features an automatic engine start-stop system that saves fuel by switching off the engine when the car is stationary.

Both the engines are mated to an 8-speed torque converter automatic transmission and power is sent to all four wheels through Audi's Quattro all-wheel-drive system as standard. The base engine is enough for daily driving, but if you wish for extra punchy performance, switch to the V6. The gearbox shifts smoothly and delivers the right ratios at the right time.

Despite featuring the least powerful engine, the 2017 Q5 offers an impressive 4,400 lbs towing capacity even with the base engine. The Q5 can shoot from 0 to 60 MPH in about 5.9 seconds and can cover the quarter-mile distance in about 13.5 seconds with the V6, while the turbo-4 does the same in 7.5 seconds and 15.8 seconds respectively.

Except for the Audi Q5, the other three rivals’ power figures are in the same league. While the Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 excels in the torque department, peak torque also kicks in earlier than the other three. Also, it is the only SUV to offer a nine-speed automatic while other rivals stick to an eight-speed automatic. The Volvo XC60 is the most expensive and slowest off the mark here while the higher engine output from Mercedes makes it the quickest of the lot.

Fuel Economy
7.5/10

Not many people buying a luxury SUV will worry much about the fuel economy numbers, but it plays an important part when we have to compare multiple cars. The 2017 Audi Q5 is rated for 20 MPG in the city, 27 MPG on the highway, and 22 MPG combined as per the EPA. Ths efficiency drops to 18/26/21 MPG in city/highway/combined conditions with the supercharged V6 engine. Both the models get a rather large 19.8-gallon fuel tank which aids in offering a combined range of about 465 miles and 416 miles with the base and V6 engines respectively.

The Audi Q5 gets a combined fuel efficiency rating of 22 mpg, making it the least fuel-efficient car of the lot. However, it offers the largest tank capacity among them all, which places it in the second position in terms of range, behind the Volvo.

Interior
8.1/10

Jump on the inside of the 2017 Audi Q5, and you'll find the cabin to be nice and quiet. The noise insulation is superb, and you can barely hear the engine grunt. The cabin is nicely laid out in typical Audi fashion. The focus has been laid out on functionality, and everything on the dash is placed ergonomically. The cabin feels airy, fresh, and neatly designed. Sometimes, in the pursuit of functionality, the beautification factor is often overlooked but not with the Audi Q5. The light tone of the interior makes it a very relaxed place to be in.

The quality of materials is top-notch and Audi offers 4 interior upholstery color options along with wood and aluminum interior inlays. The dashboard and the steering wheel are wrapped with high-quality leather. All this adds up to give the car a premium feel. The Q5 2017 can accommodate five full-grown adults quite comfortably. The seats are nicely cushioned and are crafted with high-quality materials. The 29.1 cu-ft of trunk space is also one of the best in the segment, which can further be extended to 57.3 cu-ft by folding down the rear seats.

The headroom in the front row is offered best in the BMW X4, while the rear row is taken care of by the Audi Q5. The space inside the Mercedes might seem small on paper, but it is spacious enough. The Volvo comes very close to the Mercedes in terms of interior space. It's the Volvo that offers the most legroom of these four. In terms of creature comforts, all the rivals boast individual levels of comfort with different levels of luxury but where the Q5 lacks is in terms of the infotainment system.

The MMI infotainment system of the Audi Q5 isn't the most intuitive. In fact, the system is quite slow and sluggish, and this is probably the only area where Audi missed its mark. The 12.3 inches touchscreen interface lags a bit and pixelates at times. The screen is host to the navigation system, car settings, and some other functions and features of the car. As standard, the car is equipped with an Audi concert radio, which comes with 10 speakers but you can avail the Bang & Olufsen sound system by paying extra if you are really keen on improving your riding entertainment experience. Few key features include-

  • Power heated front seats w/driver seat memory
  • Three-zone automatic climate control
  • Heated & cooled cup holders
  • Leather steering wheel and leather interior upholstery
  • Stainless steel door sill inlays & Aluminum satellite interior inlays
  • HD radio & Satellite radio w/SiriusXM Traffic
  • Navigation system & mobile Wi-Fi hotspot
  • MMI infotainment system w/14-speaker 505-Watt Bang & Olufsen premium audio system

Exterior
8.0/10

The balanced dimensions of the 2017 Audi Q5 give it a solid look and a commanding stance. The car is thoughtfully designed and retains the DNA of an old-school SUV and yet looks modern with the lines and the curves that flow across its body. The Q5 is similar on the exterior to the last generation Audi A4, and this look has worked well for the SUV. The last exterior refresh on the Q5 was way back in 2014, where the changes to the exterior were limited mostly to the front. The big half-exposed grille looks stunning and proportionate between the slim headlamps.

The nose sweeps down into the grille and is not too long as well. On the side, it's simple, marked with a thick shoulder line that flows from the bonnet all the way back to the tail. Deep wheel arches give the car a defining look from the sides. The rear is finished with LED taillights and a chrome-lined dual exhaust setup. The Premium Plus trim now gets an upgrade to 19-inch alloys, up from the 18-inch previously on offer. Audi offers a wide range of 14 paint color options for the Q5 2017 for buyers to choose from.

Safety
9.3/10

Audi understands that people buying this car will be driving it in the city traffic and will occasionally be taking it for off-roading. Keeping this in mind, it becomes necessary that Audi equips the Q5 with safety equipment that keeps its passengers safe in the real jungles as well as in the concrete jungles. As a result, the Q5 has been loaded with some advanced safety features just so that you & your family stay safe and protected in all instances.

The Q5 gets a 'Good' rating in most aspects of the crash tests and 'Marginal' for headlights on lower-trim, in the tests conducted by the IIHS. The Q5 also gets a 4-star overall rating and a 5-star rating in most of the tests conducted by the NHTSA. That said, Audi offers only a couple of driver safety aids with the 2017 Q5, and all of them are only available with the top-end Prestige trim as standard. Some of the most important safety features include:

  • Audi Pre-Sense City
  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC) & Traction control
  • Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) with Electronic Brake-pressure Distribution (EBD) and brake assist
  • Tire-pressure monitoring system
  • Blind Spot Monitoring & Rear Cross-Traffic Alert
  • Front and Rear Parking Sensors w/Rear-view camera

2017 Audi Q5 vs 2017 Volvo XC60

The Volvo XC60 is the Swedish contender of the Audi Q5. It is priced over $2,000 more than Audi and makes about 20 horses more than Audi. However, the Q5 rips apart Volvo in terms of acceleration timings and braking. The Volvo XC60, on the flip side, has better fuel economy numbers and is larger in shape than the Q5. The XC60 offers better luggage storage capacity but loses to Audi in terms of towing capacity.

Comparing both the cars carefully, we concluded that if you're in search of a luxury SUV to drive in the city and don't really need a car that has solid off-road abilities and wants a break from the big three Germans, then you should go for the Volvo XC60. However, if you love to explore the unfathomed paths and sometimes want a car that can take you off-roading, the Audi Q5 should be the car of your choice.

2017 Audi Q5 vs Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class

The Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 is a mid-size luxury SUV from Stuttgart, Germany. It is cheaper than the Audi Q5 by $400 and has 21 more horses than it. Audi, on the other hand, outclasses the GLC 300 in terms of acceleration timings. The GLC 300 has better braking stats and also has better fuel economy figures. The Q5, however, offers better cargo volume and towing capacity.

Both cars are pretty similar to each other in terms of specs and features, and so it is really difficult to declare a clear winner. Both the cars have their own set of positives and negatives. We'd rather say that both the cars are equally good and it won't really make a big difference if you buy any one of the two.

2017 Audi Q5 vs 2017 BMW X3

The BMW X3 hails from Munich, Germany, and is a strong competitor of the Audi Q5. The BMW costs about $1,200 more than the Audi Q5. The X3 too makes 20 more horses than the Q5 and yet fails to beat Audi in terms of acceleration timings. Audi, on the other hand, outclasses the Beemer in terms of braking, cargo volume, passenger volume, and towing capacity.

The only area where BMW beats Audi is fuel efficiency, and it does so only by a small margin of 1 MPG. Clearly, the Audi Q5 is the better package of the two. It costs less, drives better, and is more practical. If you have to choose between the two, you should certainly go for the Audi Q5 any day.

Final Verdict

The 2017 Audi Q5 is a brawny SUV from Ingolstadt, Germany. The stunning looks and striking features of the SUV make it an instant eyeball grabber in spite of being a very common car on the roads. With practicality, comfort, power, features, and looks, the 2017 Q5 is the perfect blend of all these factors. This car will certainly offer great value for your money and will also be a great companion. A daily driver, a highway cruiser, jungle explorer, the Q5 can do it all.
