2017 BMW 4 Series Review

Exemplifying the likes of an impressive luxury sports car, the 2017 BMW 4 Series Coupe certainly leaves a mark with its racy instincts.

Exemplifying the likes of an impressive luxury sports car, the 2017BMW 4 Series Coupe certainly leaves a mark with its racy instincts. With a starting price of $42,000, the 2017 BMW 4 Series Coupe is customized to provide for a driver-centric interior along with roomy passenger space. Under the hood of the 2017 BMW 4 Series Coupe, two engine options are available depending on the trim selection; a 2-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine and a 3-liter turbocharged inline 6-cylinder engine.

Pricing and Features
9.0/10

The 2017 4 Series Coupe comes with new trim level names, modified engines, and the features of BMW's iDrive infotainment system have been enhanced. The suspension stiffness and the steering system have been tweaked. The two major trims are 430i and 440i, and each trim is further offered in RWD and AWD variants.

As for the engine options, the 430i gets the 2-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engines, whereas the 440i has the 3-liter turbocharged inline 6-cylinder engine. 8-speed automatic transmission is standard in all the trim levels. BMW also gives an option of 6-speed manual transmission in 3 trims except in 430ixDrive for the people who want more thrill and a more engaging drive.

We recommend

The additional power in the 440i makes it the more appetizing option amongst all the trims. Best to have it in the easy to drift rear-wheel-drive version over the all-wheel-drive version. The 440i trim of the coupe holds everything you want from an impressive vehicle from a BMW as it offers the perfect blend of performance, comfort, and safety.

Engine and Performance
8.6/10

The 4 Series Coupe has two different engines for its trim levels. The 2-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine of the 430i and 430i xDrive has a horsepower of 248 and torque of 258 pound-feet, which is attained at just 1,450 rpm. As for the 440i and 440i xDrive, the 3-liter turbocharged inline-6 engine boasts 320 horsepower and generates a torque of 330 pound-feet only at 1,380 rpm.

The power derived from the engine is well handled by the 8-speed automatic transmission. In addition to being full-auto, it can also be manually handled with the help of the paddle shifters in the steering wheel. The transmission has four driving modes - Eco, Comfort, Sport, and Sport+. Along with the automatic transmission, the BMW also has an option of manual transmission which functions really smoothly.

With an identical 2-liter engine and similar 8-speed automatic transmission as the 4 Series, the ATS Coupe generates a whopping 272 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, making it the most powerful among its competitors. Although the BMW has the second-best horsepower, theMercedes wins the race of torque. Last but not least, the TT Coupe has the lowest horsepower of 220, and it shares a similar torque of 258 pound-feet with the 4 Series.

Acceleration

Together with the strong engine and smooth transmission, the 4 Series offers an overall heart-throbbing acceleration experience when taken to its full capacity on the highway. It takes a mere 5.5 seconds to go from 0 to 60 MPH and 14.4 seconds for the quarter-mile run.

The coupe holds enough power to reach a top speed of 149 mph.

Quite ironically, theAudi has the best acceleration from 0 to 60 mph and even in a quarter-mile among the four rivals in spite of having the least powerful engine. The Beemer is the second-fastest in going from 0 to 60 mph, whereas in a quarter-mile drive, it falls behind theCadillac which is faster by a couple of milliseconds than the BMW.

Handling and Steering

The 2017 BMW 4 Series Coupe has a well-distributed axle load of 50:50 ratios that ensures greater stability, accurate steering response, and controlled handling. Furthermore, a low center of gravity enhances the driving aspects. The Adaptive M Suspension system can be electronically maneuvered according to driving conditions and road terrains.

With the Driving Experience Control, the driver has the freedom to alter the suspension characteristics depending on any preferable driving style. The variable sport steering has very responsive and its Servotronic feature provides effortless wheel turning.

Braking

Braking becomes important as soon as you have heavy engines putting out strong performance numbers. The 4 Series has standard 12.3-inch front brake discs and 11.8 inch rear brake discs with calipers. Although the braking figures were not available, the relatively heavyweight would translate to unimpressive braking performance in comparison to lighter coupes in the segment.

The Audi benefiting from its light curb weight enjoys the best braking distance of 105 feet coming down from 60 to 0 mph. The Mercedes-Benz is the heaviest and has better braking than the lighter ATS. Cadillac holds the biggest brake rotors of 12.6 inches front and 12.4 inches rear but still fails to give something exciting in the braking department.

Fuel Economy
8.9/10

The engine and the transmission of the 2017 BMW 4 Series Coupe play a significant role in maintaining an efficient fuel economy. The 430i surely does better than the 440i in terms of economy, with the former having an extra 2 mpg on the highway and 3 mpg in the cities than the latter.

The little BMW Coupe enjoys a clearly better fuel economy than its rivals. All of them share the same fuel economy rate in cities with just the Cadillac falling behind by 1 mpg. On highways, all three rivals maintain a 30 mpg. As for the combined rate, the Audi and the Merc share the same figure and Caddy falls behind by a single mpg.

Interior
7.5/10

Unconventional for a sports car, the 4 Series Coupe accommodates the front and rear passengers in a fairly spacious fashion providing ample legroom for the passengers. Being borrowed mostly from the BMW 3 Series the 4 series has identical interior styling and features.

It has the same premium materials for the 3 series and makes you believe you have invested in some luxury machine. Rear headroom is a bit limited but that is ample for most adults.

All four cars have a passenger capacity of four. The Beemer Coupe exhibits the largest headroom for front passengers and shares fairly equal legroom with the ATS. In the case of back seats, the 4 Series again is the most spacious than its competitors. The TT suffers in providing enough space both for the front and rear passengers.

Infotainment

The iDrive infotainment system in the 2017 BMW 4 Series Coupe constitutes a pleasant user experience. Other than the standard 6.5-inch touchscreen display, there is an optional 8.8-inch navigation screen.

Many technological features are part of the infotainment system to keep the passengers entertained. The software is very easy to use, and it supports Apple CarPlay; Android Auto isn't compatible though. The center console has rotary knobs as the control units. Voice commands are recognized quickly, and the screen is very responsive. All the USB ports in the car provide 5 volts. Major infotainment features include-

  • Updated navigation system
  • Bluetooth audio and phone
  • Voice command
  • Auxiliary audio input
  • USB port
  • Real-time traffic information

Cargo Capacity

Being a two-door sports car, BMW 4 Series has generous cargo space. The rear seats can be folded in order to increase the trunk volume. Leaving behind its rivals by quite a margin, the 4 Series has the largest cargo volume among the lot. The TT has a decent space of 12 cubic feet, whilst the C300 and ATS share the least spacious trunk areas.

The 4 Series Coupe has a long stance which adds to its wheelbase. The car has decent width and height that makes the cabin look bigger and airy. The 430i Coupe is not meant for off-roading as it has low ground clearance, but you won't scrape the bottom of your car on potholes or bumps.

The Mercedes-Benz leads in the categories of curb weight, length, wheelbase, and shares a similar ground clearance with the 2017 BMW 4 Series Coupe. The Audi, on the other hand, is the lightest, shortest in length and height, and has the least wheelbase. The Cadillac is the widest among all and also is the second heaviest in the lot.

Safety
8.0/10

As per our research, we could find that neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Organization(NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety(IIHS) has crash-tested the vehicle. The standard safety features of the 4 Series Coupe come with front and rear parking sensors, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitor, adaptive headlights pivoting with the steering wheel, adaptive cruise control, and a self-parking feature. Few key features include-

  • BMW Assist eCall Emergency SOS
  • Tire Specific Low Tire Pressure Warning
  • Dual Stage Driver And Passenger Seat-Mounted Side Airbags
  • Curtain 1st And 2nd Row Airbags
  • Outboard Front Lap And Shoulder Safety Belts -inc: Pretensioners
  • Airbag Occupancy Sensor

Competition
6.0/10

BMW 4 Series vs Audi TT Coupe

Although it's not much of a sports car, the Audi TT Coupe's ideal driving characteristics and everyday usability make it a passionate car. The suspensions are well-tuned for a comfortable ride.

It has a tremendous acceleration rate, even better than the 4 Series Coupe, and also a fairly comparable fuel economy. However, in terms of interior spacing, the Audi lags behind in this aspect than the BMW.

BMW 4 Series vs Mercedes-Benz C300

The Mercedes C300 is a well-accumulated package of luxury and performance. Under its hood is a 2-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine which is supported by its 7-speed automatic transmission. With the comfortable interiors, smart cornering abilities, and good braking, the Mercedes is a toughie.

Although, on the contrary, despite having such a powerful engine, it has a terrible acceleration compared to the BMW. It falls a little short regarding fuel economy and interior spacing than the BMW as well.

BMW 4 Series vs Cadillac ATS Coupe

The Cadillac ATS Coupe is known for its distinctive styling and ravishing performance. Other than the base 2-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with a horsepower of 272, it also has another engine option in the form of a 2-liter V-6 engine with an increased horsepower of 335.

The 8-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive are standard, whereas the 6-speed manual transmission and all-wheel drive are optional. It is the toughest competitor to the Beemer and has a much more powerful engine and a very close acceleration rate.

Final Verdict

If you are looking for a well-balanced sports car with high performance and luxurious amenities, the 2017 BMW 4 Series Coupe couldn't fit the description more precisely. At this price tag, the Beemer is a highly recommended option for a sports car, and it definitely makes a good deal, much better than its rivals in the segment.
