About 2017 Chevrolet Equinox

3.9

Overall Rating

The SUV still manages to lure shoppers against its impressive features and package. The Equinox debuted for the first time in 2010, and many buyers got interested in this SUV since then. Most of the core rivals of this Chevrolet went through a major redesign and tweak in this time frame.

Ever since it was first launched in 2005, the Chevrolet Equinox made a visible impact on the market with its utilitarian nature and practicality. Fast forward to 2017 and the SUV continues to vaunt a capacious cabin, despite the exclusion of the third row of seating. With the current MY, the most notable change is the inclusion of the Premier trim into the lineup, with the LTZ trim being dropped out altogether. In its segment, the 2017 Equinox is slated to compete against the likes of the Mazda CX-5, Volkswagen Tiguan, and Ford Escape.

The Equinox is an appropriate suburbanite or family vehicle. The ride is smooth, and the two rows of seats are extensive. However, it has a few inadequacies, the Chevrolet Equinox has one of the lower execution appraisals in a class that isn't precisely stacked with speedsters. The base engine does not feel particularly ground-breaking, and the handling is not a huge deal.

As you move up the trim ladder, a fully loaded Chevrolet Equinox is expected to cost in excess of $30,000. At the given price point, competitive vehicles provide better value for money spent. At $26,750, the 2017 Chevrolet Equinox LT is the best bet in the lineup and comes equipped with all the necessary specifications including a 7-inch display unit, manual climate control, and Bluetooth connectivity.

I like my 2017 Chevrolet Equinox and highly recommend it for people wanting a reliable SUV. It gives you plenty of room for shopping, going to yard sells, carrying all your beach needs plus more. The gas mileage is great and preventative maintenance is affordable. I have had no issues with any aspect of my vehicle and highly recommend them.

2017 Chevrolet Equinox Review

Pros

  • Commodious cabin
  • Potent optional V6 engine
  • Good suspension setup

Cons

  • Sluggish four-cylinder engine
  • Constrained cargo space
  • Lackluster cabin build

Pricing and Features
8.0/10

The 2017 Chevrolet Equinox is available in four different trim levels, that share a common powertrain setup. As standard, each trim makes use of a 2.4L inline-4 engine and is channeled as a front-wheel-drive variant only. The AWD variant is optional on all trims except the base, L trim. The 2017 Equinox comes equipped with basic features like a rearview camera, a 7-inch display screen, and cruise control. It falls in a price range that extends from $23,100 for its base variant to $31,790 for the top-of-the-line trim.

Engine and Performance
7.1/10

For 2017, Chevrolet offers Equinox with a standard engine with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder that churns out 182 hp and 172 pound-feet of torque, a little underpowered for its weight. The optional 3.6-liter V6 (301 hp, 272 lb-ft) is much better. Both engines come standard with a six-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. All-wheel drive is discretionary aside from on the base L trim.

In terms of the competition, each competitive SUV makes use of a four-cylinder engine. While the 2017 Equinox's base engine feels sluggish, the Ford Escape has the lowest power and torque output of 168hp and 170lb.ft respectively.  The turbocharged unit of Volkswagen Tiguan is the most powerful amongst the pack and is good for 200hp and 207lb.-ft of torque. Each SUV in the market makes use of a 6-speed automatic transmission and transfer power to the front wheels as standard.

2017 Chevrolet Equinox Acceleration Performance

The sluggish and slow-moving nature of the Chevrolet Equinox is evident in the way it performs. A base engine equipped Equinox can move from 0-60mph in 9.3 seconds, which is the slowest in the segment. Even in the quarter-mile run it lurks at the bottom of the table clocking 17 seconds. If you're looking for a better performer, the V6 engine has better acceleration timings and manages to sprint from a still to the 60mph mark in flat 7 seconds.

In comparison, the 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan is the quickest to the 60mph mark recording 8.3 seconds, however, it falls to the bottom of the table when testing the quarter-mile timings. On the other hand, the Mazda CX-5 maintains consistency in its performance throughout clocking 8.9 and 16.6 seconds respectively. On the other hand, the Ford Escape remains only diminutively ahead of the 2017 Equinox.

How well does the Chevrolet Equinox Ride and Handle?

Equinox's handling abilities are not all that much. The steering feels numb and to some degree lose, while at the same time the suspension is tuned to support comfort over physicality. The upside is a smooth ride that is supplemented by the quietness of the lodge at speed. There's not much "amusing-to-drive" here, but rather the 2017 Equinox's everyday driver certifications are really strong.

However, the Equinox offers up a serenely casual ride around town or on the expressway, even though the standard 4-cylinder engine is excessively loud at full throttle. In any case, consider the possibility that it's terrible to drive. The compact SUV showcase isn't precisely overflowing with models that long for a twisty byway - Mazda CX-5 despite - so the Equinox's calm solace is a preference, or if nothing else, not all that bad. However, there's no concealing that Equinox is getting old contrasted with its rivals, and is expected for a refresh.

2017 Chevrolet Equinox Braking Performance

When it comes time to stop, Equinox's brakes are smooth and predictable. The car feels in control and the power of brakes can be felt when the foot is on the paddle. Chevrolet Equinox L is equipped with quite large brake pads that perform appreciably well because it is the heaviest SUV in the competition.

With its front and rear brake pads measuring 12.6 and 11.9 inches respectively, this 'heavy' SUV covers 116 feet before coming to halt from a speed of 60 mph whereas; Ford Escape S takes just 112 feet to do the same and is probably the best in class.

Fuel Economy
6.9/10

With the base engine, the Equinox gets an EPA-assessed 21 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway. Efficiency drops to 17 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the interstate with the V6 engine. That may not seem like a tremendous diminishing, but rather it implies that through the span of multiyear, you could be spending about $300 more in gas cash with the V6 contrasted with the base engine. With a combined efficiency of 25 miles per gallon of fuel and a fuel tank that has a capacity of 18.8-gallons, the 2017 Equinox manages 394 and 582 miles in the city and on the highway respectively.

The fuel economy of 27 MPG of the Mazda CX-5 is the best in the segment but it sports the smallest fuel tank that can store 15.3-gallons of fuel only, which causes a bearing on its range. On the other hand, the Ford Escape and Volkswagen Tiguan are rather lowly rated and manage a combined mileage of 24 and 22 MPG.

Interior
7.9/10

The seats of 2017 Equinox are comfortable even after long excursions, and they're ample for all travelers. In the back, there's a lot of legroom, and those seats slide and lean back for extra adaptability and solace. While at the same time general outward permeability is great, the Equinox's rear-situate headrests may to some degree impede the driver's view out the back window.

The 2017 Equinox dashboard is smooth and sharp overall. Likewise, with most current Chevy models, the dash forms stream easily into the entryway boards, making a wraparound feel that is unmistakable in this fragment. The quality of the materials is unremarkable, however, with a lot of hard plastics that have a modern surface and sparkle. Additionally, the little catches on the middle stack can be difficult to separate initially, however the Equinox controls.

The Chevy Equinox's inside is for the most part generally welcomed. The lodge is shrewdly composed, and the middle stack is anything but difficult to reach from the driver's seat. However, some gripe that the quantity of buttons and dials over the dashboard influences it to look occupied. Materials quality is not too bad in the Equinox, however, it can't coordinate the upscale inclination you'll get from its opponents. In terms of seating capacity, each SUV in the segment can seat five passengers. While the Ford Escape has maximum space upfront, the rear-seat occupants will find themselves at ease in the Equinox.

The cabin of the 2017 Chevrolet Equinox is adorned with accessories and some of the key interior features include:

With the top-two trims, the LT and Premier, Equinox makes use of the MyLink system for Bluetooth connectivity and smartphone integration. However, our only complaint with the system is that it tends to lag occasionally. Some of the most notable interior features include:

  • A USB port
  • 7-inch touch screen
  • OnStar with 4G LTE
  • Built-in Wi-Fi hot spot
  • Six-speaker sound system with an auxiliary audio input jack

2017 Chevrolet Equinox Cargo Capacity

However, if you are in need of more space, the split-folding rear seats help double up the existing space for a better experience.

The large grille upfront is definitive and imposing, and the roof rails give it an authentic SUV look. From afar, the bulky and burly stance of the 2017 Equinox gives it an undeniable road presence. While the Chevy is visually appealing, the Premier trim introduces chrome handles and better front bumpers for a refined and enhanced look.

Final Verdict

The Chevrolet Equinox is an appropriate suburbanite or family vehicle. The ride is smooth, and the two rows of seats are extensive. However, it has a few inadequacies. The Equinox has one of the lower execution appraisals in a class that isn't precisely stacked with speedsters. The base engine does not feel particularly ground-breaking, and the handling is not a huge deal. The Equinox is about normal as far as freight space and mileage are considered, and keeping in mind that its cost is underneath normal for the class, there are less expensive choices out there. When compared in detail with its competitors, the Chevrolet Equinox starts to lose ground in a rather competitive segment, and before making a final choice, we recommend looking out for other options available in the market.
