About 2017 Chevrolet Impala

4.0

Overall Rating

The ever-evolving family sedan scene was taken over by the Japs in the noughties but now it seems that the Americans and Koreans have made a comeback much like boy bands of the ’90s. So now the Impala has three main opponents to face.

Now here's a car known the world over for being driven by rappers and movie stars alike without having a price tag that would require selling your soul or mortgaging your house. It's not a soccer mom mobile either but a symbol of American prosperity and blue-collar pride without embodying any of its evils. Of course, the car in the discussion here is the Chevrolet Impala and they have a facelifted version out for 2017. Great.

The ever-evolving family sedan scene was taken over by the Japs in the noughties but now it seems that the Americans and Koreans have made a comeback much like boy bands of the ’90s. So now the Impala has three main opponents to face; the Toyota Avalon, Buick LaCrosse (basically the same car but never mind), and the Kia Cadenza. At $27,500 the Impala is cheaper than the rest but is it any better? Let dive deep into our review to know more.

Of course, the differences between the base models and the top models have now been bridged as a number of features that were exclusive to the Premier trim are now being offered as optional extras on the LS and LT models but still, there is a clearer choice if you want a brand new Impala in your garage. A V6 powered LT will be more than sufficient, feature-wise and performance-wise, without ever stepping over the $40k mark, unlike the Premium trim. Done deal.

2017 Chevrolet Impala Review

Pros

  • Prettiest new Impala yet
  • V6 motor is just sublime
  • Great driving dynamics
  • Tons of space inside
  • Exhaust note
  • Decent fuel economy

Cons

  • Only available in FWD
  • Could use a performance trim
  • Base motor needs more oomph

The ever-evolving family sedan scene was taken over by the Japs in the noughties but now it seems that the Americans and Koreans have made a comeback much like boy bands of the ’90s. So now the Impala has three main opponents to face.

Pricing and Features
7.0/10

This Chevrolet comes in three distinct trims; namely the 'LS', 'LT', and the range-topping 'Premier' each of which is loaded with all the necessary features and tech you could expect from a car in this segment. No, there's no sugar-coating here because the new Impala has actually been provided with anything and everything you'd find on a big executive sedan these days. Thank god for customer feedback eh?

Engine and Performance
8.5/10

Sure, there's no doubt that the 2.5 liters four-cylinder could use a lot more power than a barely imposing 197 hp but fear not, the Camaro-sourced (sounds good saying that, doesn't it?) 3.6 liter V6 makes a healthy 305 hp enough to make you feel like a motoring guru among your Prius-loving neighbors who don't acknowledge the existence of engines having more than 4 cylinders.

The four-banger makes a net torque of 184 lb-ft but the V6 makes a gratifying 264lb-ft which is a lot more than the Toyota and Kia but slightly lesser than the Buick. Oh, the case is the same when it comes to the power output as the Impala walks over everything except that privileged LaCrosse. They've cleverly tuned the performance figures despite having the same motor. Probably to justify the extra Mulla?

2017 Chevrolet Impala Acceleration

As the commanding manly stance of the Impala might suggest, it isn't exactly lightweight. Weighing close to 3700 lbs, it really is nothing short of a miracle that this big boy shoots to 60MPH from a standstill in just 6.1 seconds and it is also quicker than both the Avalon and the Cadenza.

But like every other department we look into, the ace of the acceleration game is the LaCrosse thanks to the few more ponies it packs under the hood.

Then we come to a shocker which is the fact that the Impala is the quickest on the quarter-mile. Yes, the QUICKEST. The Buick loses out by almost a second maybe due to the extra weight that it carries. 13.8 seconds and the Impala has devoured the quarter-mile as opposed to the LaCrosse's 14.6 seconds. For further details about the acceleration figures, check out the table below:

2017 Chevrolet Impala Ride and Handling

The steering of the Impala is electric and is mostly electronically controlled but it isn't exactly lifeless as most other cars in its segment. It gives an ample amount of feedback and lets the driver feel a reassuring and almost entertaining upper hand over the car's dynamics. It's also safe to say that the steering could easily be the most driver-focused one amongst its rivals.

At high speeds, the Impala feels very stable and maneuverable mostly because of the solid bodywork and refinement. Around corners, it's no BMW M3 but there is only a bearable amount of under-steer which cannot be said about most family sedans these days. Overall, it's not the kind of car which you'll get bored of driving every day and the experience might be even more rewarding if you go for that delicious V6.

2017 Chevrolet Impala Braking

All that accelerating prowess means that the Impala must be able to come to a full stop quickly. That's exactly why it has the biggest brakes here ensuring that 60-0 MPH happens in only 118 ft. Which is quite impressive for a car of its size.

The Avalon takes a relatively lengthy 126 ft and the Cadenza takes a decent 120ft to come to a standstill from 60MPH. As the LaCrosse is heavier than the Impala, it takes 123 ft. to come to a complete stop. The brakes in the front are 12.6 inches in diameter and the ones at the rear are 12.4 inches in diameter, the same as the Buick so the extra weight is the only factor responsible for its lackluster performance here.

Fuel Economy
6.9/10

Even though the 2.5 liters would be the engine of choice if you're really bothered about fuel economy, the V6 Premier gives a combined fuel economy figure of 25 MPG which means Chevy gave as much importance to performance as the fuel economy. Okay, that was unexpected.

Both the Kia Cadenza and the Chevrolet Impala have a massive tank capacity of 18.5 gallons. The second in line with the biggest tank is the Toyota Avalon. Though both the Chevrolet and Kia can store the same amount of fuel it is because of the higher fuel efficiency of the Kia that helps the Kia gain an advantage over the Chevy Impala and run for miles without stopping.

Interior
8.8/10

Following the footsteps of its large and roomy ancestors, the new Impala is comfy enough for 5 fairly large adults and will provide them with exceptional back and thigh support. Go for the optional heated seats and you wouldn't even feel like getting out of the damn thing.

Frankly, when it comes to the relaxed ride and endless amounts of legroom it gives, there certainly is no other car like it in the segment. Well, except the LaCrosse but that's an Impala underneath anyway.

All the cars in this segment offer a seating position of 5 passengers in total. While most of the interior space in this segment remains the same the Kia Cadenza offers the best headroom and legroom. So any tall passengers would be able to seat comfortably. The Chevrolet Impala also impressed us with interior space but it lands below the Kia Cadenza. Some of the interior features of the Impala include:

  • Power adjustable driver’s seat
  • Heated and Ventilated Seats(Optional)
  • Leather Upholstery(Optional)
  • Power Adjustable Passenger Seat(Optional)
  • 2-LATCH Seats

2017 Chevrolet ImpalaInfotainment System

The 'MyLink' infotainment system controls all the digital shenanigans inside the Impala much like all the other Chevys on sale.

The 8-inch infotainment screen was designed with ergonomics and driver accessibility in mind as the selectable icons are as large as you'd want them to be so even your Grandma could play her favorite track without going on a treasure hunt for the right icon. Also on offer are:

  • 8-inch touchscreen system
  • Android Auto
  • Apple CarPlay
  • Bluetooth Audio Streaming
  • Satellite Radio
  • USB Port
  • 6-speaker stereo system
  • Wi-fi connectivity

2017 Chevrolet Impala Cargo Volume

It is an infamous fact that 60's Caddies and Impalas had huge rear boots probably to assist mafia families in dumping bodies but there is a less scary and more reasonable explanation for the large cargo space available in the new Impala.

Just like any other mainstream family sedan, its boot has enough space to fit all kinds of grocery and school bags. To be more precise, you can fit an 18.8 ft. cube of shopping bags and other stuff in this new Chevy. It has the most amount of cargo space compared to its competitors.

Exterior
7.7/10

The previous generation Impala wasn't exactly the best looking car in the segment and the harsh criticism against its blob-like, unattractive design must've really struck some chords with the designers at GM because the 2014 Impala was on a different level in terms of its looks. One look at the refreshed car and it becomes obvious that they aren't playing it safe anymore.

This generation retains the beautiful lines we have all grown to love right from the Impalas in the ‘60s which should've ideally been the design direction for this decade of Impalas in the first place. With its bold stance, assertive, and macho front end, it's perfectly alright to imagine Ice Cube cruising down the streets of Cali in one of these vibes to 'Today was a good day'.

The car with the highest wheelbase is the Chevrolet Impala in the rival segment. Also, the Impala is the longest in length. The Buick LaCrosse and Kia Cadenza are comparatively shorter in length and even on the wheelbase. Cars with long wheelbases are generally more stable than cars with less wheelbase. So handling wise the Chevrolet Impala has an advantage over the others. Some of the exterior features of the 2017 Chevrolet Impala are:

  • Heated side mirrors
  • 20-inch optional aluminum alloys
  • Chrome trim badges
  • Halogen headlamps
  • Optional High-Intensity Discharge headlamps (HID)
  • Front intermittent wipers
  • Black Impala emblems
  • Optional Twin-chrome exhausts

Safety
9.5/10

The build quality of the new Chevrolet Impala is so good that the NHTSA has awarded 5-stars based on their crash tests, whereas the IIHS has given a decent rating but the Impala failed to get remarkable scores from them. The Impala is also loaded with tons of safety features and here is a list of all that you could expect regardless of what trim you choose:

  • Anti Lock Braking System (ABS)
  • Traction Control System (TCS)
  • Forward collision warning
  • Blind-spot detection
  • Lane departure warning
  • 10 airbags
  • Rear cross-traffic alert
  • Seat belt pretensioners
  • LATCH system (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children)

Competition

Chevrolet Impala vs Toyota Avalon

Standing on top of the Camry and the Corolla, the Avalon is Toyota's flagship luxury sedan that serves as the base for Lexus models like the new LS 450. For those sneaky engineers to use the Avalon chassis for a Lexus, it must've been really good in the first place. And it is. They're reliable, safe, and cheaper to maintain than most cars in this segment.

Under the hood, there's a 3.5 liter V6 making 268 hp and 248 lb-ft of torque which means performance wasn't on the set of priorities either. All that aside, the new Toyota Avalon is a comfy, fuel-efficient, and sensible large sedan.

Chevrolet Impala vs Kia Cadenza

The Kia Cadenza is powered by a 3.3 liter V6 sourced from the Hyundai Genesis sports car with 290 horsepower under the hood, there's an 8-speed automatic transmission which means it can leave the boring Avalon in its dust and settle for a position right next to the Impala in terms of performance.

The interior is very well designed with shapes and lines, and feel more German than Korean, to be honest.

Chevrolet Impala vs Buick LaCrosse

There was a time when Buick would churn out gorgeous, open-top land yachts with V8s of all shapes and sizes with no regard to middle-class car buyers. The Buick LaCrosse gets the same powertrain as the Impala but here, the four-cylinder isn't available because upmarket!

That V6 now makes 310 hp and 268 lb-ft of torque and starts off at $32k going up to almost $50k or more depending on how you spec it. If you are willing to stretch your budget just a wee bit, you'll get an Impala with more luxury and more curves on the outside.

Final Verdict

Impalas ruled the world in the ‘50s and ‘60s being the car of choice for middle-eastern sheiks, wealthy middle-class folks, and muscle car lovers at the time. Then the Chevrolet Impala was known for being driven and bragged about in gangsta-rap songs and after that, it fell down the drain. Fast forward a couple of years and in good old 2017, it has decided to make a comeback with tasty looks and performance to match. It's a genuinely good car and fun to drive too.
