2017 Chevrolet Tahoe Review

Pros

  • Smooth transmission
  • Efficient base Engine
  • Stylish and muscular looks
  • Great ride quality
  • Lots of available tech

Cons

  • Onerous handling
  • Cramped third row seats
  • V-8 only, no diesel or hybrid

The Tahoe is available at a $47,215 sticker price up to $65,030. All 3 trims are backed with the same 5.3L V8 engine mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Overview

The 2017 Chevrolet Tahoe is a full-size SUV dividing the line between the three-row Traverse but below the biggest Suburban. The Tahoe can seat up to nine passengers, boasts V-8 power, and can tow up to 8,300 pounds. Rear-wheel drive (RWD) comes standard and four-wheel drive (4WD) is optional. For 2017 Tahoe, the prices start from $47,215 for the base LT and go up to $65,030 for the top-range Premier.

A with 355 hp is the only engine available and in rear-drive configuration, the EPA rated the Tahoe at 16/23 mpg city/highway and 16/22 mpg with four-wheel drive. Tahoe's cargo capacity is 15.3 cubic feet behind the third row, which expands to 94.7 cubic feet behind the front seats. The truck-based Chevrolet Tahoe is brimmed with safety features but the bulk of these safety features are available only on the optional safety package. These features are a cluster of front parking sensors, forward collision warning, lane departure warning, and more. The 2017 Tahoe battles it out with the other full-size SUVs like the Nissan Armada, Toyota Sequoia, and Ford Expedition.

Pricing and Features
8.0/10

The 2017 Chevrolet Tahoe is available in 3 trim options, namely LS, LT, and Premier. The car starts at a base price of $47,215 passing by the LT trim at $52,345 to the Premier trim at 62,030. All 3 trims share the same 5.3L V8 engine backed with a 6-speed automatic transmission. One standout thing about this Chevrolet SUV is that it’s equipped with plentiful standard features like remote start, rear parking sensors, tri-zone climate control, and active phone integration options. Here is a list of the key features that are available with the trims:

The basic trim and the mid-level model are the best value for money trims on the lineup. Of which the LT trim offers a great mix of price saving and convenience. It includes most of the conveniences of the lower trim and adds leather upholstery and some other utility functions. Available at a price of $52,345, the LT trim provides the best value for the money spent.

Buying Advice

The base LT is the best value Tahoe trim with an MSRP of $47,215.  The 2017 Tahoe LT includes most of the conveniences but Chevrolet offers advanced tech and features as options. For more safety assist features opt for the available safety package, which is a must.

Engine and Performance
8.2/10

The Chevrolet Tahoe's classic 5.3L V8 engine makes an appearance again. The engine churns out 355 hp of power along with 382-pound-feet of torque. The power plant is backed with a 6-speed automatic transmission, which is reliable and responsive as and when required. Every trim offers an option of either a rear-wheel-drive or an all-wheel-drive.

The 6-speed transmission is quite smooth in operation and the powertrain delivers decent acceleration times on board. The rear-drive variant gets a locking rear differential, while the AWD variant gets a single-speed transfer case. The powertrain is quite efficient in terms of fuel economy as well, considering the size and weight of this full-size SUV.

The Chevrolet Tahoe is powered pretty competitively for its class. The V8 engine is apt for the class but the competition delivers a little more power. The Nissan Armada is the potential leader in terms of output followed by the Toyota Sequoia SR5 with a power output of 381 hp. The twin-turbo V-6 on the Ford Expedition and the V-8 on the Tahoe are similarly specced, though the turbocharged Expedition has colossal amounts of torque.

2017 Chevrolet Tahoe Acceleration

The throttle response from the V-8 seems ready at all times, while the gearbox allows the engine to rev out its potential. The 2017 Chevrolet Tahoe can accelerate from 0-60 mph in 7.0 seconds and reaches a quarter of a mile in 15.3 seconds.

Even if the Chevy Tahoe is the lightest with a curb weight of 5356 pounds, it still lacks in terms of acceleration. The major reason is the lack of maximum power output as rivals like the Nissan Armada provides much higher power to pull the vehicle from 0-60 mph.

The Nissan Armada’s V8 can propel the car to 60 mph in 6.5 seconds which is the best on the table. The Toyota Sequoia does the same in 6.7 seconds followed by the Ford Expedition. The Chevrolet Tahoe comes in last in this comparison.

2017 Chevrolet Tahoe Ride and Handling

The Chevrolet Tahoe isn't the jolliest ride but it’s capable of maneuvering tricky roads even with a fully-loaded car. The Magnetic Ride Control reduces body roll and makes it a decent choice as a daily driver. Though the Chevy is amongst the few SUVs that still feature a body-on-frame build and that seriously hampers its handling and ride quality. This gives it outstanding towing potential though.

The 6-speed automatic shifts smoothly and offers seamless power over a variety of speeds. The car has a solid rear axle suspension, which does take a bit away from the ride quality. That said, Chevrolet does use its proficiency at steering setups to make the car every bit as convenient as its build allows.

2017 Chevrolet Tahoe Towing Capacity

The 2017 Chevrolet Tahoe's 8400-pound towing capacity is enough to drag a boat to a mountain. The ladder-frame chassis and the huge 5.3L V-8 are to thank for this brilliant capability. Tahoe's superior towing capacity is much better than most of its competitors.

The 2017 Nissan Armada with its much more powerful engine, has an 8,500-pound towing capacity which is the best in this comparision, while the Toyota Sequoia pulls up 7,400 pounds. Ford and its turbocharged powertrain on the Expedition come in last with just 6,600 pounds.

Fuel Economy
6.1/10

The Chevrolet's active fuel management system and the new grille shutters enhance the fuel economy for the 2017 Tahoe. 2017 Chevrolet Tahoe features a city mileage of 16 mpg and highway mileage of 23 mpg. The SUV begins using only 4 of its 8 cylinders at higher speeds. Customers can expect a combined mileage of 19 mpg.

The Ford Expedition follows the Chevy Tahoe with its 28 mpg of combined fuel economy. This is thanks to Ford’s capable twin-turbocharged V-6 motor. The Nissan Armada and the Toyota Sequoia are the least efficient of the bunch with 16 and 15 mpg of combined efficiency respectively.

Interior
8.0/10

Looking at the interior of the 2017 Chevrolet Tahoe might not be that intriguing but it's better than what most other competitors offer. The bulk of Tahoe's cabin space is consumed by the front seats with 45.3 inches of legroom and 42.8 inches of headroom which also are 10-way power-adjustable. The seats are well-bolstered and provide enough support to keep the passengers in place.

A similar sense of comfort found its way to the second line of seating with 39 inches of legroom and 38.7 inches of headroom space. Unfortunately, the designers lost their way before reaching the 3rd-row seats, which have low space and are rather thinly padded, with barely enough capacity for adult passengers.

The Tahoe offers competitive space in the first two rows, but it falls short of most of its competitors in the third row. The Toyota Sequoia has great space in all three rows, but it surprisingly lacks headroom in almost every position. The Ford Expedition has the best space in almost every seat in the cabin. Here is a list of the interior features that are available with the 2017 Chevrolet Tahoe:

  • 10-way power-adjustable front seats
  • Climate Control
  • Leather upholstery
  • Remote Start
  • Leather steering wheel
  • Heated and cooled front seats

2017 Chevrolet Tahoe Infotainment

The 2017 Chevrolet Tahoe's infotainment system features an 8-inch screen installed with Chevrolet's MyLink interface, a system largely known for its friendly user interface. The SUV also features standard phone integration features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Other than that the car features a couple of USB and charging ports, Bluetooth connectivity, and satellite radio.

Putting in some extra cash will get you inbuilt navigation, a set of Bose premium speakers, 2 extra USB ports, and a rear-seat infotainment screen. All of this is standard on the Premium trim. Some standout infotainment features in the Chevrolet Tahoe are:

  • 8.0-inch touchscreen display
  • Apple CarPlay
  • Android Auto
  • Bluetooth Compatibility
  • 110-volt power outlet
  • 4G LTE Capability
  • Satellite radio
  • 9-speaker Bose audio system

2017 Chevrolet Tahoe Cargo volume

The cargo space in the 2017 Chevrolet Tahoe is capacious and enough to easily accommodate the luggage of large families. With all seats up, the cargo volume is 15.3 cubic feet, which is not the best in this comparison.

The foldable 3rd-row seats open up 51.7 cubic feet of space, though the maximum cabin space is achieved by folding the 2nd-row seats which delivers a decent 94.7 cubic inches of space.

Although Chevy Tahoe is impressive most of its rivals deliver a little more space. The Toyota Sequoia's maximum cargo space is billed at 120.1 cubic feet. The Ford Expedition stays a little back with its 108.3 cubic inches of space. Although the cargo space on the Nissan Armada and the Chevrolet Tahoe is satisfactory it is still less than most SUVs in the market.

Exterior
7.9/10

The 2017 Chevrolet Tahoe's crisp lines and perfectly angled structure might seem a bit too disciplined but is attractive in its way. The car is used by law enforcement in many states, and thus can get you mistaken for an officer. The wide-body with a huge front grille and the dual split LED headlamps complete the front look of the SUV. The bigger 20-inch wheels raise up the Tahoe from the ground and go very well with the entire design.

The length of the car is 204 inches which is ideal for the SUV territory. The width of 80.5 inches and height is 74.4 inches secures the Tahoe with a big cabin. The 5356 pounds of curb weight makes it a bit lighter than most of its competitors. The Chevy Tahoe gets a decent ground clearance of 7.9 inches, but the SUV is the best on off-roads as well.

Though it's not the tallest, widest, or the longest SUV in the class, Chevrolet Tahoe’s exterior dimensions make it look like a typical SUV. The largest SUV in the competition is the Nissan Armada, which has an overall bigger and wider profile. The Toyota Sequoia gets the highest ground clearance of 9.9 inches which makes it much better on off-roads. Here is a list of the exterior features that are available with the Chevrolet Tahoe:

  • Active grille shutters
  • Heated mirrors
  • Automatic wipers
  • remote keyless entry
  • Side assist steps
  • Roof rails
  • hands-free tailgate
  • Power folding mirrors

Safety
5.9/10

Even though the 2017 Chevrolet Tahoe comes with a multitude of active safety features, the bulk of these features are either optional or are absent from the lower trim. The build quality is rigid and well designed and can be released on. The NHTSA has awarded the Tahoe with a 4-star overall safety rating. The IIHS does not test large SUVs and as such a rating is absent. Chevy loads the car with a plethora of fo safety features and technology. Here is a list of a few of those features:

  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Forward Automatic Braking
  • Low-Speed Forward Automatic Braking
  • Forward Collision Alert
  • Lane Keep Assist Lane
  • Change Alter Rear
  • Cross-Traffic Alert
  • Rear Vision Camera
  • Front and Rear Park Assist

Competition
7.0/10

Nissan Armada vs Chevrolet Tahoe

The new Nissan Armada could be named the most spacious and usable SUV in the lot. The V8 on the Armada cranks out the most power and Nissan does that on a modest price tag. On the other hand, the Chevrolet Tahoe delivers better comfort and above-average interior quality.

Also, fuel efficiency on the Chevy Tahoe is much better and best amongst the lot as well. To summarize, going on board with the Armada a buyer would get more power, pleasing cabin space, and backroom comfort, all of that on a reduced price.

Toyota Sequoia vs Chevrolet Tahoe

The new Toyota Sequoia is a moderate SUV that has well-made and durable features all about. It also has great fit-and-finish. A buyer who isn't charmed by single features and analyzes the car as a whole will appreciate the Sequoia.

The car matches the price range of the Chevy Tahoe, delivers similar features but lacks the same trailering capacity. People looking for a car to last the ages might be drawn towards Sequoia.

Ford Expedition vs Chevrolet Tahoe

Though it features a smaller engine the 2017 Ford Expedition generates a generous amount of power, equivalent to the Tahoe's horsepower and a hefty bit more in terms of torque. The new Ford Expedition offers the best seating space in the class.

The only thing where the Tahoe gains an edge is its superior towing capacity. If towing capacity isn't that important then you most definitely would be better suited for the Expedition.

Final Verdict

At the end of the line, the Chevrolet Tahoe isn't the best car in the SUV territory, but it surely gets the job done. Where other competitors are focusing on limited areas the Tahoe plays on everything the buyer wants, a larger size, above-average interior, satisfying power, and nice trailering capacity.
