About 2017 Ford Edge

3.8

Overall Rating

The Edge comes in 4 different trim levels. The base spec front-wheel-drive SE trim of the Ford Edge is priced at $28950 while you'll have to put in $2000 extra to avail the all-wheel-drive. The Edge uses a 2-liter engine that pumps out about 245 HP and delivers 275 lb-ft of torque.

Ford has made a premium and features rich car, with a standout design and a responsive powertrain. The Ford Edge comes as the perfect offering for family-oriented buyers, or people looking for convenience and usability, the car offers a plethora of conveniences and hassle-free performance. The shape is somewhat unconventional, while the posture is almost hatch-back-like, giving the car unprecedented maneuverability and space.

Powering the new Ford Edge models is a turbocharged 2.0L inline-4 engine offered with a front-wheel drive. While the all-wheel-drive comes with a 2.7L V-6 turbocharged motor. The former motor puts up 245 horsepower, while the latter does 315 horsepower. If you are willing to sacrifice fuel economy, the inline-4 2.0L engine can be swapped for a 3.5L V-6 for a small premium. The wide range of offerings goes up against the likes of the Jeep Grand Cherokee, the Chevrolet Traverse, and the Dodge Durango.

Depending on where you are using the vehicle, the SEL trim makes the most sense and is most likely to be the most popular among buyers. You can pick the AWD system in colder regions for just about $2,000 more. The Sport trim is only recommended if you want even more performance along with some decent fuel economy. The Titanium trim seems a bit too over the top in terms of its offered features.

The Titanium trim seems a bit too over the top in terms of its offered features.

Engine and Performance
8.6/10

The 2017 Ford Edge is available in three engine options. The base is a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that churns out 245 hp and delivers 275 lb-ft of torque. The engine is coupled to a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission and you get an option of sending power either only to the front wheels or to all four wheels. The Sport trim, on the other hand, gets a 2.7-liter V6 engine that pumps out about 315 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque.

the SEL and the Titanium are the only two trims that have an option to opt for the much bigger and more powerful 3.5L V-6 naturally aspirated engine that generates around 280 hp along with 315 lb-ft of torque. Thus the varied engine options are available as per the use case and are all powerful enough to pull this SUV.

The power figures of the Ford Edge are not that great and in fact, the Ford Edge is the least powerful car in the category. The Jeep Grand Cherokee, the Dodge Durango, and the Chevrolet Traverse all use the same 3.6-liter V6 engine but the former two cars make 293 hp while the Chevy Traverse, on the other hand, makes 281 horses only.

2017 Ford Edge Acceleration

Despite having the least powerful engine and having the lowest power figures, the Ford Edge performs well against its rivals in terms of acceleration timings. The Edge, with its turbo inline-4, can go flat out from 0-60 MPH in about 7.3 seconds. The Ford will also cover the quarter-mile distance in about 15.7 seconds.

2017 Ford Edge Ride and Handling

The 2017 Ford Edge is quite athletic for its size and does handle well. Despite the noticeable body roll, that's there on offer but the characteristics of the car are such that it always wants to dive into corners and wants to take on challenging corners. Handling is neither a sports car-Esque nor it is like a conventional SUV. It somewhat sits in between both of them. Steering is pretty responsive and does offer a decent amount of feedback.

Ride quality is rather brilliantly designed. The Edge is built to offer the passengers a plush and comfortable ride. The suspension setup is thoughtfully set up and it tries to absorb every bump and pothole. During high-speed cornering, there is a chance of you getting a bit jostled around. Otherwise ride quality is pretty decent.

2017 Ford Edge Braking Performance

The 2017 Ford Edge comes with rather a large set of brakes. Upfront, you get 13.6 inches diameter discs and at the rear, you get 12.4 inches diameter discs. The Ford Edge can come to a halt at a distance of 125 feet from 60 MPH at a distance of 125 feet.

The braking stats of the Ford are somewhat disappointing given the fact that this car has the largest set of brakes. The Escape also has the lowest curb weight in the competition of 3927 pounds, yet the braking distance from 60-0 MPH is the most in this comparison.

Fuel Economy
6.9/10

The flipside of low performance on a turbocharged setup is that the 2017 Ford Edge returns brilliant fuel economy. Though the larger V-6 motors fare a bit on the inefficient side. The Ford can go for 21 miles in the city, and 29 miles on a gallon of fuel on the highway. The Ford Edge gets a combined fuel economy rating of 24 MPG.

The AWD 2.0L turbocharged inline-4 motor setup will return 20/27/23 mpg for city/highway/combined. The naturally aspirated V-6 3.5L motor turns up 17/26/20 mpg. While the most powerful motor from the Edge Sport, the 2.7L turbocharged V-6 returns 17/24/19 mpg on city/highway/combined.

The Chevy Traverse gets 22 mpg, which is better than most other naturally aspirated V-6s. The Ford is the only car being based on a turbocharged inline-4 in the lineup, and thus the most efficient.

Interior
7.9/10

Hop on to the inside and you’ll rather find yourself in the well-designed interior of the 2017 Ford Edge which is pretty spacious. The dashboard is neatly laid out and the cabin feels quite premium. The materials are of good quality, and overall the cabin has a rather ergonomic and well-fitting feel to it. Though it does feel a bit narrow on the sides, and the car overall feels much more like a crossover than an SUV in terms of space. Deletion of the third seat helps the Ford Edge to offer the 5 passengers more leg, head, and shoulder room.

Upfront, the Ford offers a total head/shoulder/leg room of 40.2/60.3/42.6 inches respectively while at the rear it offers a total head/shoulder/leg room of 40.3/60.5/40.6 inches respectively. The seats are nice and comfy and overall it just feels comfortable to be on the inside. The Ford Edge has the best rear-seat legroom in the competition, even large passengers will have no trouble sitting in the SUV for very long durations. The SUV also seems to have storage spaces almost everywhere which makes it doubly more convenient.

Ford Edge vs Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is the American rival of the Ford Edge. Jeep uses a larger 3.6-liter engine and thus makes more power than Ford. On the flip side, Ford has better acceleration and fuel economy figures. Moreover, the Jeep is $2000 costlier than the Ford. Ford is the better car here that offers a balance of power and fuel economy.

Ford Edge vs Chevrolet Traverse LS

The Chevrolet Traverse is yet another American rival of Ford Edge. Traverse also uses a larger 3.6-liter V6 engine and also makes more power than Ford Edge. it is quicker on the throttle than the base engine on the Ford Edge. The Chevrolet Traverse can also accommodate 8 people and offers more passenger volume.

We get a better package in the form of the Chevy Traverse for an extra $6000. And so if you ever find yourself in a situation where you have to choose between the two, we would rather suggest you go for the Chevrolet Traverse.

Ford Edge vs Dodge Durango

The Dodge Durango is similarly built like the Grand Cherokee, though it can accommodate up to 6 passengers. In a nutshell, if you want to fit an extra passenger into your car, you should buy the Dodge Durango. The Dodge Durango also has some tuned-up variants that have loads of performance. Though overall, the Ford Edge seems a much better package.
