2017 Ford F-250 SuperDuty Review

Pros

  • Smooth transmission
  • Efficient Engine
  • Suave looks

Cons

  • Not so good handling
  • Larger carbon footprint

The F-series from Ford is the Usain Bolt of pickup trucks. Their new offering the F-250 SuperDuty is no different either.

Overview

Looks like selling 820, 799 F-series trucks last year wasn't enough for Ford. Because in the year 2017, they have introduced a new truck designed ground-up, the Ford F-250 SuperDuty. Not only the name but the truck is also pretty imposing.

The F-250 SuperDuty joins the F-Series SuperDuty family. This truck is a significant improvement over the normal F-250 which includes: beefier underpinnings, more powerful engines, roomier interiors that can be equipped with a host of convenience and technology features.

Pricing and Features
8.0/10

The new Ford F-250 SuperDuty Regular Cab is available in two trims namely XL and XLT. Only one-bed size is available for regular cab configuration which is an 8.2-foot load bed. Both the trims are available with 2WD and 4WD configurations. The base XL model starts with a price tag of $32,535 while the XLT trim with 4WD setup costs around $39,540. Ford also gives access to various packages to customize the truck according to your choice.

We Recommend

If you are buying this truck only for commercial work purposes, then we recommend going for the base XL trim depending on your pocket size. Given that, all the features of the top trims are available as an option on all the trims you can equip this truck the way you want and save some precious bucks. However, if you want this truck as a daily driver then we recommend going for the XLTtrim, it gets you some important comfort features. On top of that, it comes with a competitive price.

Engine and Performance
9.0/10

A 6.2L naturally aspirated V8 gasoline engine comes as standard. This engine churns out a hefty 385 horses of power and 430 pound-feet of torque. There is an optional turbocharged 6.7-liter diesel V8 that puts out an impressive 450 horsepower and 935 pound-feet of torque

Both the gasoline and diesel engines come mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. The six-speed is slick and works efficiently all the time be it off-road or on the road. The power is sent to the rear wheels, whereas you can opt for an optional all-wheel-drive version by paying nearly $4000 more.

Surprisingly, Nissan offers the most powerful engine for a heavy-duty truck. Also, it uses a 7-speed automatic gearbox and all that for just $31,590. The Ford F-250 and the RAM 2500 generate almost similar engine outputs while the GMC Sierra 2500HD stands last on the table.

How quick is the 2017 Ford F-250 SuperDuty Regular Cab?

Acceleration times are a tricky thing especially with heavy-duty trucks because there are two different engines available in the F-250. The Ford F-250 SuperDuty is quick, mainly because of its powerful and torquey engine. No matter which engine you choose, the F-250 never feels out of breath. This full-size pickup takes only 6.9 seconds to reach 60 mph from a standstill whereas the quarter-mile test is completed in 10 seconds.

In both the performance tests, the GMC Sierra 2500HD is the most agile pickup truck in this competition. With a few milliseconds behind, the Ford F-250 sits on the second spot. Being the most powerful truck, the Nissan Titan XD fails to display its true ability and falls behind Ford while the RAM 2500 is the slowest contender in this segment.

How does the 2017 Ford F-250 SuperDuty Regular Cab handle?

The Ford F-250 SuperDuty gets softer suspensions, which makes the ride smooth. This pickup doesn't drive like a car due to its large dimensions but still, it doesn't drive like a tractor either. Improved directional control comes from an adaptive-steering system that is optional on the XLT and above. The Ford F-250 SuperDuty gets the quietest cabin in its competition. Thanks to the quiet cabin and the great quality of materials used the ride feels plush.

However, if unladen the rear-end of the truck gives a little vertical movement which may feel a little unnerving. The suspension is designed for heavy-duty payload and towing and that means if you run around with an empty bed then the ride is going to feel extra firm. For the off-road junkie, the Ford offers a special FX4 off-road package. This package includes underbody skid plates, off-road-tuned shocks, and an electronically locking differential. Thus, making the already capable F-250 SuperDuty even more off-road ready.

How are the brakes on the 2017 Ford F-250 SuperDuty Regular Cab?

Compared to its rivals, the brakes on the Ford F-250 feels more responsive and firm. There is almost no bite and the pedal travel is minimal too. The braking distance of the F-250 SuperDuty is best in class with a 70 to 0 mph time of just 202 feet. The brakes on the F-250 inspire confidence, even if you do something silly you are backed by anti-lock brakes, stability and traction control, trailer sway control and hill-start assist.

The RAM 2500 gives a tough challenge to the Ford F-250. It takes the same level of braking distance despite having a heavier curb weight. The Nissan Titan XD falls behind just by 2 feet and grabs the second spot while the GMC Sierra 2500HD goes this time to the last position.

What’s the towing capacity of the 2017 Ford F-250 SuperDuty Regular Cab?

Despite being the smallest member of the SuperDuty family, the F-250 is a towing monster. If equipped like-wise the F-250 can tow up to 13,300 pounds. An 18,000-pound towing capacity is achieved when the SuperDuty is equipped with the available 6.7-liter V8 turbo-diesel engine. Such tremendous towing capacity, especially with the diesel engine makes the F-250 a lunatic towing machine. Hence, if towing is what you need, the F-250 is what you get period!

The GMC Sierra 2500HD gains its position back on the table while the Ford F-250 lurks behind it. With 12,010 of towing capacity, the Nissan Titan XD sits on the third spot whereas the RAM 2500 lags in this field and fails to offer the best towing capacity.

What’s the payload capacity of the 2017 Ford F-250 SuperDuty Regular Cab?

Even in the payload department, no competition gets even near the capabilities of the Ford F-250 SuperDuty. With almost 700 pound-feet more than the closest rival, the F-250 is the king of payload capacity. The truck offers a payload capacity of 3940 pounds.

This time it's the Ford F-250 that outshines its rivals by offering an unmatched payload capacity of 3940 pounds. The closest to Ford is the GMC Sierra 2500HD with 3233 pounds. The Nissan Titan XD and the RAM 2500 offers a payload capacity below the 3000-pound mark.

Fuel Economy
7.0/10

Pickup trucks like F-250 are not tested by the EPA, but that doesn't mean that the owners do not care about the fuel economy their trucks deliver. Said that you can expect the Ford F-250 SuperDuty to deliver a combined mpg of 17 Which makes it right next to GMC Sierra which delivers a combined mpg of 18.

Clearly, the Nissan Titan XD is the most fuel-efficient trunk in this segment followed by the Ford F-250. The Titan XD offers a combined range of 468 miles. The GMC Sierra 2500HD is right behind Ford while the RAM 2500 sits on the last pace of the table.

Interior
8.0/10

Inside, the Ford F-250 SuperDuty is roomy, the quality of the materials used are best-in-class. The chunky steering is accompanied by the large ac vents and rotary type buttons. The dashboard is laid out neatly and the fit and finish of the same are exceptional.

The seats, especially the front ones are super accommodating. However, without a side stepper getting in and out of the pickup becomes really difficult. Also, the space at the back in the extended cab becomes a bit of a squeeze, if you have a family it is highly recommended to get the crew-cab.

The head and legroom offered by the GMC Sierra 2500HD are class-leading while the RAM 2500HD offers the least in this aspect. But its interior feels more upscale than the other rivals. The creature comforts offered by Ford and GMC are much better than the other two rivals. Some of the interior features include:

  • Single-zone manual climate control
  • Remote keyless entry
  • Cloth seating
  • Power windows

How much cargo capacity does the 2017 Ford F-250 SuperDuty Regular Cab offer?

Since the pickup trucks are all about hauling loads from one place to another, the Ford F-250 comes with the best cargo capacity in the industry. In the regular-cab configuration, the F-250 is available in only one load bed size which is an 8.2-foot cargo bed. This cargo bed measures 98.1 inches long and 50.5 inches wide. It has a total cargo capacity of 78.5 cubic feet.

With a bed volume of 78.5 cubic feet, the Ford F-250 stands on top of the table. The GMC Sierra 2500HD stands right behind Ford with 76.3 cubic feet while the RAM 2500 grabs the third spot. Here, the Nissan Titan XD offers the least cargo volume in this competition.

How intuitive is the 2017 Ford F-250 SuperDuty’s infotainment system?

The base XL and XLT variants get a basic audio setup with 4 and 6 speakers respectively. The thing to note is that Ford lets you have the 8-inch touch as optional on any variant of your desire. The touchscreens come feature-loaded and touch responses of the same are razor sharp. However, the Uconnect infotainment system on the RAM 2500 is the benchmark in terms of user-friendliness and ease-of-use. Other infotainment features include:

  • Rearview camera
  • Driver information display
  • A four-speaker audio system
  • 8-inch center touchscreen display
  • Satellite radio
  • USB and AUX.

Exterior

The Ford F-250 is a good looking pickup in its competition. For starters, it is huge, like really huge. On top of that, the butch look is carried all around with as little as possible use of chrome. The design is no-nonsense yet feels modern and fresh. Everything on the F-250 SuperDuty is overly large, the ORVM, the headlights are as big as some mini-refrigerators. Thanks to the dimensions, it stands out in the crowd and makes you feel special.

Ford F-250 SuperDuty Regular Cab Vs Nissan Titan XD Regular Cab

The Nissan Titan XD received an update recently to compete with the established American pickups. The gasoline engine of the same feels pretty under-powered, and the truck feels years behind in terms of features offered by the F-250 SuperDuty. The only positive side of the Nissan Titan XD is its price, It undercuts the Ford F-250 SuperDuty by $5000. Hence, if money is the deciding factor go for the Titan XD otherwise, the Ford F-250 is the better choice hands down,

Ford F-250 SuperDuty Regular Cab Vs RAM 2500 HD

The RAM 2500 Regular Cab stands out from the pickup-truck crowd for all the right reasons. It not only looks apart but also feels great on the inside. At a starting price of $36.145, it is priced similar to the Ford F-259 SuperDuty. The only thing that lets the RAM 2500 HD down is its engine, the engine feels quite underpowered and the towing/payload capacity speaks for the same. Hence, if you care about both looks and power then F-250 must be your choice.

Final Verdict

The F-series from Ford is the Usain Bolt of pickup trucks. Their new offering the Ford F-250 SuperDuty Regular Cab is no different either. Both the engines are capable, the interiors are feature-loaded, towing power is monstrous, most importantly the truck is loaded with safety tech for both passenger and towing safety. The only downside of the F-250 SuperDuty is that it becomes quite costly in the top trims. Yet, nobody is even close to challenging the throne of the F-250. Hence, if you don't want the F-250, wait till the others catch-up.
