2017 Ford Fiesta Review

Pros

  • Crisp Exteriors
  • Excellent steering
  • Fun to drive around

Cons

  • Low on safety features
  • Bulky transmission
  • The infotainment system could have been better

The New 2017 Ford Fiesta Sedan is stylish, elegant and sleek. The fuel economy, trunk size and the braking are top class. But the main attraction towards this car has to be its sleek styling and bold interiors. It also gets a SYNC system, something not seen in this category of cars before.

Overview

In a market that has always witnessed large and bulky powertrains, making a small car can pose a real risk. It comes as a great challenge to make the customers understand and accept the compromises that need to be made on style, performance, and utility, which, at the same time, are crucial to strike a perfect balance between these proportions.

Despite its relatively small reach, the small car market has been seeing a lot of takers thanks to Ford's classic but enviable design with the Fiesta. Ever Since its launch, the vehicle has only been praised for its aggravating, yet agile structure. After all, it is not just any other small car. Backed up by powerful engine choices, the Fiesta’s exuberant lineup makes it almost impossible to resist. Finally, it competes with Chevrolet Sonic (LS Manual), the Kia Rio (LX Manual), and the Hyundai Accent (SE Manual).

Pricing and Features
7.0/10

The 2017 Ford Fiesta Sedan comes in three trims, all of which are shared with its hatchback counterpart. For a change this year, Ford has decided to drop out the bulky 1.8L naturally aspirated engine. Instead, all these trims are now powered by a 1.4-liter Ti-VCT I4 engine that generates about 120 hp at 5500 rpm and 112 lb-ft of torque at 5000 rpm. It is a five-passenger car and gives a combined fuel economy of 30 mpg.

Along with this, the New Fiesta does get a SYNC Auto infotainment system and new, redesigned Chrome grilles as standard across variants. More on the Fiesta, the optional cruise control, and safety restraint systems are also now standard.

We Recommend

While the Base version contains all the basic features that one requires in this price range, I would suggest going for the SE variant as it gets Climate control and a better audio system at not too much a price difference.

Engine and Performance
6.5/10

The 2017 Ford Fiesta Sedan is powered by a 1.6-liter Ti-VCT I4 engine with a 5-speed manual transmission as standard and produces about 120 hp of power at 5500 rpm and 112 lb-ft of torque at 5,000 rpm. The Fiesta is best to run on gasoline and this is where the full capability of the car is at the display. Hit the road in the 2017 Ford Fiesta and you'll find the standard suspension tuning and precise steering feel make for very satisfying driving dynamics without sacrificing ride comfort

Here, all the rivals are pretty much similar, with each of them offering a 1.5-liter engine, sans the Chevrolet Sonic which has a 1.8-liter engine. The Horsepower and Torque values for all of them are quite similar, with the benchmark being set by the Sonic, quite expectedly, considering its bigger engine. What all these cars have in common is the availability of a standard manual transmission.

2017 Ford Fiesta Sedan Acceleration:

Normally, Ford likes to keep the tires warm, but with this iteration, however, it seems otherwise. Perhaps the decision to drop the naturally aspirated assembly may have been a little unplanned because the new turbocharged engine is quite as slow as the former.

In other words, the Fiesta’s engine does fine in all parameters barring acceleration, where it is just a bit slow of the blocks at 9.5 seconds, about a second slower than the Kia Rio in the first place. The emission from the Fiesta is the least.

Kia’s Rio is the fastest amongst all the offerings in this class, setting a time of just 8.4 seconds to reach 60 MPH. The Hyundai Accent is not too far with 8.6 seconds on the chart. On the other hand, the Chevrolet Sonic and the Ford Fiesta take the top occupying the bottom spots here.

2017 Ford Fiesta Sedan Ride & Handling:

The 2017 Ford Fiesta is just as impressive to handle as its previous iterations. As with every Ford vehicle in service, the Fiesta sedan exhibits incredible suspension and steering dynamics. The electronic steering is a complete delight in the cities, while it adds the right amount of weight as you take to the highways. This makes the Fiesta more responsive and nimble, especially for those fast lane changes.

Moreover, on the curves, it is even more fun to drive. The forespoken steering coupled with state-of-the-art suspension assemblies is enough to give you jitters on a road full of bends and corners. It is so agile and planted along the banks, that you would just wish it was an RWD. Even then, the dynamics are surely in for some complaints. This car is short and hard braking makes it go nose-diving, well almost! The ride quality could have been better too with problems regarding the car hopping around while passing over a pothole being the most glaring.

2017 Ford Fiesta Sedan Braking

Braking has always been the less-loved child for Ford vehicles. However, there is a surprise here as the Fiesta, placed last when comes to acceleration, has the best brakes, two things which are generally proportional. However, hard braking should be avoided on this car as it tends to nosedive.

The Rio takes the longest to stop, again a surprise considering that it has the best acceleration in business, while the Accent and the Sonic take the other two places with similar figures. Meanwhile, the Fiesta manages the shortest brake distance of 118 ft.

Fuel Economy
8.0/10

What is the prime motive for buying a small car? Well, if it isn’t fuel economy, then I think Ford has its feet in the wrong place. Figuratively, the 2017 Ford fiesta gives a fuel economy of 27 mpg in the city, and 35 mpg on the highway. These figures are considerable if we look at the figures of the others.

Here, the Kia Rio and the Hyundai Accent are the best with a combined fuel economy of 31 mpg. The Fiesta is just a shade behind at 30 mpg while the fourth-placed Sonic isn\u2019t far either at 28 mpg.

Interior
6.3/10

The inside of the Ford Fiesta is the place to be. The upper dash and the door trim, along with the quality seat fabrics give the car an upscale feel. The newly available SYNC system is not something you see often in this bracket of cars. One such thing which could be changed is the switches and toggles on the dash, which are in the shape of rounded knobs, preferring styling over convenience.

This is something where the Ford Engineers need to work on, big time. Though the front seats look good, they are nothing more than those cushioned bar stools. Again, they lack in practicality and are more inclined towards styling.

The rear seats are better and much more comfortable. However, passengers over 6 feet are going to have a hard time. The Headroom is fine for a normal-sized adult, while the knee room is more than adequate. Some of the interior features in the 2017 Ford Fiesta are:

  • 12-volt auxiliary PowerPoint - front
  • 12-volt auxiliary PowerPoint - rear
  • Ambient Lighting
  • Auxiliary Audio Input Jack
  • Carpeted front floor mats
  • Center dome lamp with map lights
  • Chrome door release handles
  • Cruise control

2017 Ford Fiesta Sedan Infotainment System:

Even with a small house, the Fiesta features enough amenities to keep the occupants entertained. The dynamic ride is greatly complemented by the SYNC infotainment system, an interface designed by Microsoft.

The Fiesta does get a SYNC-3 auto system, something seen mostly in high-end cars. However, the whole infotainment panel could have been integrated better with the dashboard. Also, it does have basic features like:

  • AM/FM Stereo/Single-CD/MP3 Capability
  • SYNC with SYNC Applink
  • SiriusXM Radio
  • SYNC 3
  • 2 Smart Charging USBs

2017 Ford Fiesta Sedan Cargo Capacity:

The Ford Fiesta does have a decent-sized trunk that can easily hold a few duffle bags among others. It has a wide opening with a flat surface, which is good for inserting and removing those heavy bags.

Exterior
6.5/10

The Fiesta designs are bold and spunky. While the 5 door Fiesta hatchback is the more stylish, the 4 door Sedan will please the eyes of a Traditionalist, who wants a conventional trunk. The Fiesta gets an arch line rooftop and a crisp side profile The Fiesta does live up to its name, with it having an expressive look inside-out. It is fair to say that the Fiesta has to be the sleekest and Stylish looking car in this review.

The Fiesta has got decent sized dimensions, somewhere five passengers can fit in, although not very comfortably. The one thing this Fiesta can brag about has to be its Ground Clearance. At 6.1 inches above the ground, it is the best in class and leaves it, competitors, way behind. Some of the key exterior features in the 2017 Ford Fiesta are:

  • Black beltline
  • Chrome upper grille bars and surround
  • Lower Black grille
  • Twin-chamber Quad-Beam halogen, bright reflector headlamps with black bezel and chrome highlights
  • Fog lamps with chrome-trimmed ring
  • Keyless Entry Keypad
  • Body-Color Power Mirrors with Integrated Blind Spot Mirrors

Chevrolet Sonic vs Ford Fiesta

The Chevrolet Sonic costs $2,000 less than the Ford Fiesta. And while it has a 0.2-liter advantage on the engine, it is nowhere to be seen as it generates quite bad figures for that engine.

Its pickup is the worst amongst the lot. However, it does boast of the largest trunk and a considerable value of fuel economy. So the Ford Fiesta is the car you should go for between the two.

Kia Rio vs Ford Fiesta

Again, like the Sonic, the Fiesta is priced $2,000 less than the Rio, which could be massive while selecting a car. The engine is pretty much the same with almost equal power and torque generation.

The pickup of the Kio Rio is way better than the Fiesta as well. However, with a better fuel economy and a much spacious cabin, the Rio pips the Fiesta to win this comparison easily.

Hyundai Accent vs Ford Fiesta

The fight between the Ford Fiesta and the Hyundai Accent goes right down to the wire. Both generate decent values of torque and power. Now, the Pickup and braking of the cars are similar as well.

What is difficult to digest is that both have a similar fuel economy as well. However, the bigger trunk and the more spacious cabin, which can easily accommodate 5 people tilt the head to head in the Hyundai Accent favor, which emerges as a clear winner here.

Final Verdict

The New 2017 Ford Fiesta is stylish, elegant, and sleek. The fuel economy, trunk size, and braking are top class. But the main attraction of this car has to be its sleek styling and bold interiors. It also gets a SYNC system, something not seen in this category of cars before. All in all, the Fiesta looks beautiful and performs admirably. Buy the Ford Fiesta if Style is the only thing you want from your car and you can compromise on convenience.
