About 2017 Ford Flex

3.9

Overall Rating

The effortlessly good-looking 2017 Ford Flex Wagon is an absolute family car with its spacious finish and a distinctive styling.

The effortlessly good-looking new Ford Flex is an absolute family car with its spacious finish and distinctive styling. The 2017 Ford Flex sits in the middle of the competitive midsize SUV segment. Though it has nimble handling and spacious seating for adults in all three rows, it’s let down by its underwhelming base engine

We recommend the SEL trim of the 2017 Ford Flex Wagon as it comes with features like blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. The Appearance Package adds black exterior and interior trims, 20-inch wheels, a panoramic sunroof, and a rear entertainment system. Furthermore, the exclusive turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine has better output than the rest of the trims.

2017 Ford Flex Review

Pros

  • Spacious cabin
  • Intuitive infotainment system

Cons

  • Poor fuel economy
  • Bare-bones standard technology

The effortlessly good-looking 2017 Ford Flex Wagon is an absolute family car with its spacious finish and a distinctive styling.

Overview

The effortlessly good-looking new Ford Flex is an absolute family car with its spacious finish and distinctive styling. The 2017 Ford Flex sits in the middle of the competitive midsize SUV segment. Though it has nimble handling and spacious seating for adults in all three rows, it’s let down by its underwhelming base engine

Pricing and Features
7.0/10

The 3.5-liter V6 engine is standard in all the trims of the 2017 Ford Flex Wagon and so is the 6-speed automatic transmission mated with the front-wheel-drive system except for the SEL trim which comes with an optional 3.5-liter turbocharged V6 engine that sends power to the default all-wheel-drive system with the help of the standard 6-speed automatic transmission.

We Recommend

Furthermore, the exclusive turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine has better output than the rest of the trims.

Engine and Performance
8.1/10

The base 3.5-liter V6 engine of the 2017 Ford Flex Wagon is part of its latest version of corporate powertrain which generates a horsepower of 287 and torque of 254 pound-feet. The optional turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine has an increased output of 365 horsepower. The 6-speed automatic transmission shifts gracefully and it contributes to the smart system with steering and throttle sensors which keeps the Ford in lower gears at slow speeds and picks up momentum and shifts to the upper gears in less than 10 seconds.

In spite of having the lowest base price among the four, the Dodge Durango SXT houses the most powerful engine with a massive output of 293 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. It is followed right behind by the costliest Hyundai Santa Fe Limited producing a horsepower of 290 and torque of 252 pound-feet.

The Flex does have a slightly better torque of 254 pound-feet than the Hyundai but falls behind in terms of horsepower output of 287. Meanwhile, the Honda Pilot LX happens to be the home for the least powerful engine compared to the three other rivals as it generates 280 horsepower but manages to have the highest torque of 262 pound-feet.

2017 Ford Flex Wagon Acceleration Performance

The 3.5-liter V6 engine of the 2017 Ford Flex Wagon pairs significantly well with its 6-speed automatic transmission and goes up and down the gear ratio without any unattended revs. There is no power loss in the process and the acceleration is adequate enough for a wagon. It takes just 6.2 seconds to accelerate this behemoth of a vehicle from 0-60 MPH.

Over the quarter-mile, the 2017 Ford Flex Wagon manages to swoop in and finish first with a timing of 14.7 seconds leaving the initially fastest Honda Pilot doing it in 15.1 seconds. The Hyundai Santa does exceptionally well over the quarter-mile as well and falls behind the Honda by a millisecond. And finally, the Dodge Durango doesn't recover from its slow start and is still the last one to cross the quarter-mile mark in 15.8 seconds.

2017 Ford Flex Wagon Handling and Steering

The steering feel of the 2017 Ford Flex Wagon is fairly crisp and the overall ride quality is comfortable except during tight corners. The electric power steering system has a quick steering ratio with impressive predictability.

2017 Ford Flex Wagon Braking Performance

The brakes of the 2017 Ford Flex Wagon had been previously upgraded in order to achieve more friction area and it features a larger master cylinder contributing towards a better pedal feel. The reaction is instant and has quite a bite to it.

Ford Flex Wagon vs Honda Pilot LX

The new Honda Pilot is a full package of a stylish vehicle with a worry-free driving experience. The 3.5-liter V6 engine sends power to the optional front-wheel or all-wheel driving system through the standard 6-speed automatic transmission.

The torque vectoring system of the all-wheel-drive system along with the different modes namely sand, snow, and mud contribute immaculately towards better handling.

Up against its rival the 2017 Ford Flex Wagon, the Honda has a slightly less powerful engine output and fairly similar acceleration, it does suffer from a dip in terms of braking but recovers really well with its fuel economy, and it has an increased capacity of 8 passengers and bigger cargo space.

Ford Flex Wagon vs Dodge Durango SXT

Featuring an unconventionally brawny design, the new Dodge Durango doesn't compromise with its handling in spite of its huge size and facilitates its passengers with comfortable ride quality. The two V6 and V8 engine options couple with either one of the rear-wheel or all-wheel-drive systems. Its Uconnect infotainment system includes an 8.4-inch touchscreen display and features many favorable options.

In comparison with the 2017 Ford Flex Wagon, the Dodge has very poor acceleration figures in spite of housing a way more powerful engine, it has decent braking given its heavy curb weight and is more efficient in terms of fuel economy as well. However, it can capacitate only 5 passengers yet has enough cargo space.

Ford Flex Wagon vs Hyundai Santa Fe

Limited With handsome exterior styling and spacious interiors, the new Hyundai Santa Fe stands out among the other SUVs. The 3.3-liter V6 engine paired with the 6-speed automatic transmission produces adequate acceleration complemented by its smooth gear shifts. Front-wheel drive is standard with an optional all-wheel-drive system.

The infotainment system features an optional 12 speaker audio system and is compatible with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and Blue Link connectivity. When compared to the 2017 Ford Flex Wagon, Hyundai has a somewhat better engine output with a slightly slower acceleration rate, the braking needs a little improvement as well like its better fuel economy, it has an equal passenger capacity of 7 like the Flex but lacks in cargo space.

Final Verdict

Our final verdict on the 2017 Ford Flex is that it's a complete family car with a powerful performance and spacious interiors boosting the ride quality. It is suitable for long drives and isn't much of a problem to move about town as well. Up against its rivals, it outperforms them in several aspects and needs little tweaks as well. But overall, the 2017 Ford Flex Wagon would be a wise investment and you wouldn't regret buying it, especially if you have a big family.
