About 2017 Ford Mustang

4.2

Overall Rating

The classic American pony car has been around for more than 50 years. The father of the pony car segment in its modern avatar promises a good dose of speed and styling while adhering to a budget.

The Ford Mustang has a long history and rich heritage standing to its name. For years, it has been a buyer favorite in the segment for its unique design, athletic capabilities, and a rather affordable price. Starting at $25,185, the 2017 iteration of the Mustang is a part of its fourth generation and underwent a major change in 2015. For the current MY, the only changes include the availability of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, features that make the Mustang even more practical and quirky.

The new Ford Mustang is offered with loads of choices and it is easier for you to choose a car that suits you better. The Stang is offered with 3 engine choices. It can be had with a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic with paddle shifters. The new Mustang Coupe shares the same old rivalry with the Dodge Challenger, Chevrolet Camaro, and the Nissan 370Z.

The Mustang has always had an incredible price to performance ratio. It offers great value for money with its heritage and iconic styling. The Mustang has evolved from a straight runner to a machine that can hold its ground around corners. The pick of the lot is GT Premium trim and standard 6-speed manual. Add the optional GT performance package and we have a classic American icon in its modern avatar.

Pricing and Features
8.0/10

From the base variant itself, the Ford Mustang feels heavily equipped and is packed with the latest technological amenities. It includes features like keyless ignition, keyless entry, and a rearview camera. As one moves up the ladder, the feature list becomes extensive and adds abundant comfort creatures for an eased and relaxed driving experience. With three engine options on offer, the Mustang caters to a large segment of buyers. It falls in a price range that extends from $25,185 to $35,695 for the top-rack trim.

Engine and Performance
8.8/10

The Ford Mustang is available with three distinct engine options, and the final call you make will depend on your appetite for exhilaration and sheer thrill. Even with the base variant, the 2017 Mustang makes use of a V6 engine that is good for 300hp of power and 280lb.-ft of torque. Move one step up on the trim ladder and the base engine makes way for a 2.3L turbocharged inline-4 unit that produces 10 additional horses of power and 320lb.-ft of torque. The final engine option is a guzzling V8 unit that delivers cracking performance like its exhaust note. The V8 engine churns out 435hp of power and 400lb.-ft of torque.

Each trim of the Ford Mustang gets mated to a 6-speed manual transmission and is channeled as a rear-wheel-drive variant only. With each engine option, the Mustang delivers quick and steadfast performance.

The 370Z is also the quickest to cover the standing quarter mile. The Dodge Challenger can touch 200 mph which is the highest in the comparison.

2017 Ford Mustang Ride and Handling

The sixth-generation Mustang sheds its image as a straight line - a fast car. With the inclusion of independent rear suspension in the 2015 generation change, Mustang has come forward with its newly found turn-in response. The steering is precise and provides a good on-center feel. Mustang produces tarmac-hugging grip levels. The suspension offers improved ride quality and filters most of the road undulations.
The Dodge Challenger is more muscle car-like to handle with tons of oversteer and understeer at corners. The Challenger does need an experienced hand behind the wheel to have a comfortable ride. However, the Ford is surprisingly sharp in handling, which is new for a Muscle car of its type. The Nissan 370Z is the light from behind the wheel. The slick gearbox and sharp handling enhance its Japanese architecture which makes it more desirable to enthusiasts.

2017 Ford Mustang Braking

The 2017 Ford Mustang Coupe gets 12.6-inch disc brakes both at the front and rear. The brakes have positive feedback through the pedal which gives you enough confidence to drive like a hooligan. Exterior
7.0/10

Mustang's overall design has aged gracefully. The 2017 design sees minor cosmetic updates. The Mustang Coupe flaunts handsome proportions, the Mustang measures 188.3 inches in length, 75.4 inches in width (widest in the segment), and 54.9 inches in height. The curb weight of 3642 lbs., is acceptable by the industry standards.

The chiseled and sculpted bonnet looks athletic from the word go. Call the Mustang sporty or suave, Ford has managed to maintain the historical legacy of the coupe nonetheless and has infused modernity into it. While there are speculations of a revised exterior design update sometime next year, the Mustang continues to have abundant road presence with the head and taillights adding character to the overall design.

Competition
9.0/10

Ford Mustang Coupe vs. Dodge Challenger

The Dodge Challenger reveals all the aspects of a muscle car. Unlike the Mustang, the Challenger lacks a turbo-four engine. The Challenger offers pure power with the V engine that has NSFW horsepower ratings. Otherwise, the Mustang delivers better handling and fuel economy. The Challenger needs to be reworked on the interior as well. Dodge Challenger's cabin is adult-friendly while the Mustang struggles with the rear seat. The Challenger also offers more standard features and trunk space. As of now, the refreshed Mustang offers better appeal than the old-school Challenger.

Ford Mustang Coupe vs. Chevrolet Camaro

The Chevrolet Camaro has been an age-old rival of Mustang. These both muscle cars have been competing with each other for ages. They both deliver similar power figures, with both turbo-fours and performance V8s. Mustang offers more premium cabin and comfortable seats than the Camaro. The Camaro has more available and standard features. Both appear to be very similar in many aspects, but the Ford Mustang would still be a great pick.

Ford Mustang Coupe vs. Nissan 370Z

The pricing starts at the north of $29,000. The V6 engine howls at higher revs and the cabin ambiance can be unpleasant for the liking of a few. The ride is compliant but at the same time, the 370Z is not meant to satisfy you with its plethora of creature comforts. The age of the vehicle is also an issue. The Nissan 370Z is due for a major refresh in a couple of years. The 2017 Ford Mustang EcoBoost is the base trim. It is equipped with a 2.3 Liter that produces 310 horsepower and 350 lb-ft. of torque. The performance from this four-cylinder engine gives the larger V6 engines, a run for their money.

Final Verdict

The Mustang becomes a little too much when you start testing the limits. In Sport+ and Race drive modes, the car goes under a transformation with its aggressive throttle response and heavy steering. The car loses out its refined nature and the exhaust note of the EcoBoost engine at redline isn't a pleasing thing to hear. In these modes, the Mustang needs to be controlled with finesse and delicate touch. The European standards were what American pony cars aspired to reach. But with this generation, the Ford Mustang has stepped up the game. The Mustang is no longer an exclusive straight-line runner. With the dynamic changes in this generation, Mustang has come up a notch to offer better drivability in straights and around the corners. The cabin comfort has also seen an improvement and the overall package has come across as more refined.
