2017 Jeep Cherokee Review

The 2017 Jeep Cherokee is not just all about the show. It always stands out when compared to any other average crossovers like Mazda CX-5, Honda CR-V, and Volkswagen Tiguan for its well-organized cabin and its comfy ride.

Attention Off-Roaders!! Are you looking for an SUV with a blend that satisfies both your family needs and your off-roading spirits? The 2017 Jeep Cherokee might just fit into your category with ease. At a base price of $23,695, the 2017 Cherokee comes with two types of engines. The base model comes with a sluggish 2.4L four-cylinder engine ideal for a drive in the city. The second option is the powerful 3.2L V6 engine available at a tad higher price. Both of them come with 9 automatic transmissions and an optional All-Wheel-Drive.

Pricing and Features
6.0/10

Available at a base price of $23,695, the 2017 Cherokee is available in 6 trims. The basic trims are provided with a 2.4L 4 cylinder engine, which is a bit sluggish and noisy when compared to the higher models which have a V6 engine. All the trims are available with a standard all-wheel-drive option with 9-speed automatic transmission. Apart from that, all the trims are equipped with a UConnect Infotainment system and SelecTerrain systems for the best driving experience. The UConnect system comes with an 8.4 touch screen with organized menus and quick responses. The SelecTerrain helps the commuters to get a comfortable experience on every road.

We recommend

The Sports or the 75th anniversary trim are the two great, feature-rich options to opt for in the 2017 Jeep Cherokee. These fall in a good price range and offer extra features compared to the lower trims and are low on price compared to the higher ones. But if you want more power at demand, the V-6 engine producing more power and torque is only available in the top-end Overland trim, which is significantly more expensive.

Engine and Performance
7.7/10

The 2017 Jeep Cherokee is a 5 seater SUV available in two types of engines. The base models are equipped with the 2.4L 4 cylinder engine that is good for 184hp and 171lb.-ft of torque. Although this engine is a bit sluggish and noisy at times, it is an ideal city ride for daily commuters. It is also available with a 3.2L V6 engine in the higher models for a smooth and power-driven experience on all terrains and can churn out 271hp of power and 239lb.-ft of torque.

All the trims are equipped, except the Trailhawk, are equipped with a standard all-Wheel-Drive and an optional front-Wheel-Drive system with 9-speed automatic transmission. The Trailhawk has only one driving option i.e., the all-wheel-drive, but is one of the topmost performers amongst the series. The towing capacity of 4,500lbs is one of the prominent capabilities of the 2017 Jeep Cherokee. This sets up a very high parameter for its competitors. So now if you are planning camping or visiting the beach for water sports over the weekends, you can easily hook up your Jeep to your trailer or camper.

The 2017 Honda CR-V manages almost similar power and torque outputs of 184hp and 180lb.-ft of torque and comes mated to a CVT transmission system. Both the Mazda CX-5 and Volkswagen Tiguan come mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. The Tiguan offers the highest power and torque output in the segment of 200hp of power and 207lb.-ft of torque through its turbocharged engine.

How fast is the Jeep Cherokee?

The 4 cylinder engine of the base model takes time to pull the heavy body forward. This is the reason that the base model of the Cherokee has sluggish acceleration. The Jeep Cherokee takes 9.3 seconds to sprint from 0-60mph and 17 seconds to cross the quarter-mile, which is on the slower side of the spectrum if not the slowest among the competition.

Though the base model is not on par with its competitors in terms of acceleration, the higher models with the V6 engine are capable of providing it with very high and smooth acceleration.

The Tiguan takes 8.3 seconds to achieve the same feat while both the Tiguan and the CR-V take 16.3 seconds to cross the quarter-mile mark.

How well does the Jeep Cherokee Ride and Handle?

The 2017 Cherokee comes with a Selec-Terrain system which operates on different modes such as Auto, Sport, Sand/Mud, and Snow depending on the terrain. This uses the brakes, traction and stability control, and engine management to get an optimal grip on the vehicle on all types of roads. Apart from that, the relatively firm suspension controls the body roll in each corner without compromising the quality ride.

How efficient are the brakes in the Jeep Cherokee?

The braking system of the 2017 Jeep Cherokee is quite rigid. It has a 13.0-inch front brake disc and an 11 inch rear brake disc. These help the driver to smoothly bring the vehicle to halt ease even in emergencies. The 2017 Jeep Cherokee stops from 60mph in a distance of 118 ft, which is an above-average braking distance in the segment.

Fuel Economy
6.3/10

The 2017 Jeep Cherokee has a subpar fuel economy. It gives an average mileage of 25 MPG, i.e., 21MPG in the city and 30 MPG on the highway. This becomes a reason to reconsider this SUV for many customers. The 2017 Cherokee gets a fuel tank of 15.8 gallons, providing a range of 331 miles in the city, 474 on the highway, and a combined range of 395 miles.

When compared to its competitors, the Cherokee offers a little less fuel economy, but it is still better than the Volkswagen Tiguan which has an average of 22MPG. The Honda delivers the best-combined fuel economy of 28 mpg, followed by the Mazda with a combined efficiency of 27 mpg. The Jeep comes in at third place and the Tiguan at last. The Tiguan has the largest fuel capacity of the bunch, which is 16.9 gallons, followed by the Jeep with a 15.8-gallon fuel tank, while the Mazda and the CR-V get 15.3 and 14 gallons of fuel capacities.

Interior
8.2/10

The interiors of the 2017 Jeep Cherokee come out from the line of award-winning interiors. This 5 seater has a spacious and stylish cockpit. Its seats are made adjustable up to 6 modes that make the commuters feel comfortable on every road. Also, the spacious foot space and a fair headroom add extra comfort to the ride. The Jeep Cherokee offers great second-row space according to the segment standard.

While space is not an issue, its quality and comfort also remain unparalleled. There is a hint of a dual-tone setup and the cabin design in itself is vaunts a clutter-free design and looks appealing. As one moves up the trim ladder, quality continues to improve. The only visible drawback in an otherwise inch-perfect cabin seems to be the absence of storage space to hold passenger objects and items.

Cargo volume

Though the Cherokee offers a spacious cockpit, it lags in terms of cargo space. Despite this, the Cherokee manages to maintain a dominating position over its competitors. Its cargo capacity of 24.6 cubic feet is ample to fit luggage for the weekend getaway. With the rear seats folded the trunk volume further increases to 54.9 cubic feet.

Exterior
7.8/10

When it comes to the looks, the 2017 Jeep Cherokee stands out for its non-aggressive look amongst other Jeep SUV models. Its steeper hood and narrowly curved headlights make it look much of a practical SUV than an aggressive beast. Although the seven-slot grille in the front represents the Jeep inside it.

The 2017 Jeep Cherokee stretches to 182 inches in length, 73.2 inches in width, and 65.7 inches in height. These dimensions make it look like a Highlander SUV. These extruding dimensions along with impressive ground clearance are what make it a better off-roading companion.

Jeep Cherokee vs Mazda CX-5

The 2017 Jeep Cherokee is no competition to Mazda CX-5 in terms of performance and acceleration. Even the fuel economy and cargo space are comparatively low. However, when it comes to braking and handling, the Cherokee has an upper hand due to its easy adjustability to diverse terrains. On the other hand, its towing capacity is better than that of the Mazda CX-5. Though the cargo space is less, the spacious interior seating can be considered an added advantage.

Jeep Cherokee vs Honda CV-R

The Honda CR-V has superior acceleration and fuel economy when compared to the Cherokee. It also has a much spacious interior and cargo space. However, both of them stand on par when it comes to their engines' power and braking. The only advantage that the Cherokee has over CV-R is the towing capacity.

Jeep Cherokee vs Volkswagen Tiguan

The only advantage that the Tiguan has over the Cherokee is its powerful engine and acceleration. The Cherokee is more fuel-efficient and easily handled when compared to the Volkswagen Tiguan. Also, it has more towing capacity. However, the interior and cargo space are on par with each other.

Final Verdict

The 2017 Jeep Cherokee is a compact crossover with the perfect qualities required for off-roading. However, it is only advantageous if you prefer to choose the higher trims with the V6 engine to get higher power-driven performance. However, if you want to buy an SUV for a day-to-day drive in the city, you settle for the base models with the 4 cylinder engine. Its interior quality is suggestive of the brand's idea of sophistication and refinement and is the perfect example of how ergonomic cabins should like. Its feature-loaded infotainment and safety systems add abundantly to its value. However, the competitors like Honda CR-V do provide a premium feel at the same price tag. We suggest you first take a look at its competitors in the class also, as there are better options available.
