The Renegade came out in 2014 as the baby SUV from the Jeep family. Initially, the Renegade came as a replacement for the compass, which then reappeared as a slightly larger model this year. The Renegade comes packed with features and tech onboard. With a quality cabin and a powerful drivetrain the baby jeep pits against the 2017 Chevrolet Trax,
The Jeep Renegade is a result of genuine Italian craftsmanship. It comes with a customized platform with the choice of having a 4-wheel-drive or Front-Wheel-Drive and manual or automatic transmission. All the trims have two four-cylinder engines. The Front-Wheel-Drive is the standard feature across all trims which can be upgraded to a 4-wheel-drive system, making it a bit more off-road friendly vehicle. Keeping safety in mind, Jeep has made front airbags, electronic stability systems, and antilock braking systems, standard features across all the trims of the 2017 Jeep Renegade.

The Trailhawk trim offers the true blue Jeep DNA by offering amazing off-road ability as well as luxury. The trim also gets most of the latest tech updates from FCA. This makes it even with rivals from a segment above.
The 2017 Jeep Renegade is offered in two 4 cylinder engine options - A Turbocharged 1.4-L inline four-cylinder generating 160 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. This particular engine comes mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. The 2nd engine is a Turbocharged 2.4-L inline-4 engine generating 180 horsepower which is available with only the 9-speed automatic transmission.
For a better off-roading experience, Jeep also offers two All-Wheel-Drive systems - the Active Drive and the Active drive low, the latter of which converts the first gear into a 20:1 ratio gear to enable slow maneuvering on rough roads. That being said, this vehicle does not satiate any desire for quickness or speed. The quickest model of all the trims offered by the Jeep Renegade is the base model - Jeep Renegade Sport. However, for hardcore off-roading, the 2.4-L engine along with the Jeep Active Drive Low is an excellent choice.

Despite being a letdown in terms of transmission and speed, the 2017 Jeep Renegade fares pretty well against its competition - Chevrolet Trax, Buick Encore, Mazda CX-3. The Jeep Renegade offers superior torque and horsepower than all the aforementioned vehicles.
The manual transmission on the Renegade is slick but the automatic transmission is not so user-friendly. It leads to inconsistent shifts which occur too early at times and too late at others. For daily and moderate use, the 1.4-liter engine with the Front-Wheel-Drivetrain with the 6-speed manual gearbox would be prudent and for slightly rough use, the Jeep Active Drive 4-wheel-drive would suffice your expectations.
The Renegade takes 8.6 seconds to reach 60 mph. The Quarter mile comes in 16.5 seconds, which is decent regarding the segment standards.

The Renegade with its 8.6 seconds timing for an acceleration from 0-60 mph beats the 9.3-second mark of the Chevrolet Trax. The Mazda CX-3 is marginally quicker than the Renegade at 8.5 seconds while the Buick Encore is the quickest one here with 7.8 seconds of 0-60 time.
The 2017 Jeep Renegade comes with all-around disc brakes as standard. You get 12-inch rotors at the front and 11-inch rotors at the rear. The Renegade is on the heavier side with over 3025 lbs up the shoulder. However, the brakes work phenomenally along with electronic aids such as ABS, EBD, and Brake assist. The brakes have a progressive feel and help the SUV to come to a complete halt from 60mph in just 116 ft.

The 2017 Buick Encore is the bulkiest SUV in the competition. It gets the smallest set of disc rotors as well. However, the brakes in the Buick Encore do give it adequate stopping power which offers better confidence from behind the wheel. The Mazda CX-3 comes with 11-inch rotors all-around which offer great stopping power. The Chevrolet Trax is the smallest SUV in the lot and also weighs quite low compared to the hefty FCA rivals.
If you opt for the lower trim 1.4-liter turbocharged engines with the 6-speed manual transmission, you will be guaranteed a smooth ride suitable for the city as well as the highway. However, if you opt for the 2.4-L engine with a 9-speed automatic transmission, city driving may not be favorable.
The Renegade with Front-Wheel-Drive takes on corners in a nimble manner with pretty good stability. While employing the 4-wheel-drivetrain, the Jeep Renegade hurls down the roads like a true champ it was made to be and performs exceedingly well in terms of gripping traction, suspension, and passenger comfort.

The 2017 Mazda CX-3 returns the most fuel economy with over 29 MPG in the city. Even after having a 2.0L engine, the Mazda manages to save big on gas bills. Both the Buick Encore and the Chevrolet Trax offer identical fuel economy figures which are slightly better than the Renegade's numbers.
Although the 2017 Jeep Renegade has ambient, and plush interiors with all sorts of toys for the boy in every man, the boxy shape of the prodigal Jeep creates a dull drone when cruising in open areas like highways, which can be a deal-breaker for some. Apart from that, the Jeep Renegade interiors have been designed to make driving a pleasurable experience with certain traits from the classic Jeep Wrangler. The passenger seat grab bar is an example of that.
The telescopic and tilting steering column make it convenient for the driver to drive comfortably. Jeep goes the extra mile and provides an option for a heated steering wheel, in case you don't mind spending a couple of hundred bucks extra to indulge in luxury. The two-zone climate control creates a pleasant atmosphere inside the car. The car also has 8 cup holders placed evenly across the interior to ensure you and your company can have a morning coffee while driving to work or away on a trip.

With 41.1-inch of dedicated leg space in the front, the Renegade surpasses its competition comfortably in terms of spatial comfort. The passenger leg space, however, is compromised because of that and ranks last with only 35.1-inch. It also provides the best-in-class headroom of 41.2-inch making the cabin airy. The Chevrolet Trax and the Buick Encore offer almost similar interior dimensions and are quite a spacious duo as well. The Mazda CX-3 has the sportiest cabin here but on paper, it looks to be a bit more compact than the other rivals. However, the space offered inside is quite decent at the most.
Some highlighted interior features are:
The SUV employs the use of the convenient UConnect infotainment system, which provides a very user-friendly interface that is convenient to use from either side of the console panel. The standard fitting on the Renegade is a basic radio. However, that can be replaced with a 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment panel with a total of 7-inch incorporated into the instrument cluster. The 6.5-inch screen is high definition and makes GPS navigation exceedingly easy.
Except for the AUX and USB input, other features including 4G internet, Bluetooth audio, and phone connectivity, mobile Wi-Fi, Navigation, real-time satellite information, and voice recognition are all optional features. The infotainment system, however, is not equipped with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
The 2017 Jeep Renegade provides about 19 cu-ft of cargo volume. However, the SUV also provides the option of a completely foldable second row of seats, thereby creating an additional 32 cu-ft of cargo volume.

The Mazda CX-3 has the least cargo capacity among the rivals here while the Buick Encore offers the most space with the rear seats up. The Chevrolet Trax and the Buick Encore have almost identical cargo capacity as well. Compared with all the competitors here, the Jeep Renegade turns out to be the most spacious one here once you fold the rear seats.
On the outside, the compact SUV from Jeep has maintained a minimalistic appearance providing only the fuel vent and an optional sunroof. The car sports a sleek roof section with bulky roof pillars and plastic protective accessories which give the car a rugged appearance.
To make the car capable on rough terrains, the Renegade sports 18-inch aluminum wheels with all-season tires in the front and 18-inch steel wheels with all-season tires in the rear with a tire pressure monitoring system along with it. Over the trim levels, the aluminum wheels come as an optional feature.

With the characteristics of the Wrangler, the 2017 Jeep Renegade (166.6-inch) is the shortest in length here among the rivals on the list. In width, however, it measures the widest than all three. The 2017 Jeep Renegade, with an excellent road presence, stands the tallest amongst its competition at 66.5-inch and with a ground clearance of 6.7-inch.
Weighing 3025 lbs, the baby Jeep is heavier than all of its competitors except the Buick Encore, making it a very well rooted vehicle. With the classic 7 slot front grille and circular headlights, Jeep establishes its mark over its prodigal son.
Some exterior features are:
The Jeep Renegade bagged some respectable safety scores from both the IIHS and the NHTSA. The IIHS gave the new Jeep Renegade a rating of Good in all parameters except in Front Crash Prevention and Child Seat Anchors, rating the former at Advanced and the latter at Marginal. The car did however secure only a Poor rating for its headlights. The NHTSA gave the car an overall grade of 4 out of a total of 5.
The SUV also comes equipped with plenty of optional active safety features. Automatic high beams, blind-spot monitoring, forward collision warning, lane change alert, rear parking sensors, and front automated emergency braking, though optional, available for the SUV. The standard features of the car include Electronic Stability Control (ESC) And Roll Stability Control (RSC), Selec-Terrain ABS And Driveline Traction Control, Rear Child Safety Locks, Airbag Occupancy Sensor, Dual Stage Driver, And Passenger Seat-Mounted Side Airbags.
Standout safety features of the Renegade are:
Priced at $22,990, the Buick Encore is a humble city utility vehicle at the most as opposed to the rugged and off-road friendly Jeep Renegade. The Encore, however, gets a more modern designed and comfortable cabin than the Renegade. It definitely falls short in terms of performance and off-roading capabilities in front of the Renegade but poses as a great alternative with its better fuel economy and more civilized appeal.
The Chevy achieves a perfect safety rating from the IIHS and NHTSA, which definitely gives it an upper hand over the Jeep Renegade. With premium interiors and comfortable seats with plenty of legroom (more than the Jeep) for both rows, the Chevrolet Trax gives a rich and premium driving experience.
In terms of performance figures, the Trax creates 138 units of horsepower and comes equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission. Like the Jeep, the standard drivetrain on the vehicle is Front-Wheel-Drive with the optional all-wheel drive for more power. Performing better than the Jeep in fuel economy, the Chevrolet Trax gives an average of 26 miles per gallon on city roads and 34 miles per gallon on a highway. One major advantage of this over the Jeep is that Chevrolet offers two years of complimentary scheduled service.
The Mazda CX-3 is more of a softroader compared to the baby Jeep. The renegade is a very capable compact SUV built to take on trails and hurdles. However, where the CX-3 scores are on the road. The car-like architecture and performance make it easy to drive on the tarmac.
The adequate grip also helps the CX-3 to effortlessly cruise on highways. The Jeep, however, will have a significant amount of body roll. Both cars however excel in terms of features in their own ways.
All in all, the 2017 Jeep Renegade will appeal to the youth and the moderate off-roader with its spartan charm. The 2017 Renegade offers more standard features than any other vehicle in its segment at a competitive price. The impressive off-roading capabilities of the prodigal Jeep surpass every other vehicle's in its segment, and the efficient four-wheel drive with nimble handling and the options for Active Drive systems, are the major upsides for off-roading enthusiasts. For people who require more cargo volume and fuel efficiency along with comfortable seating in both rows, the Renegade won't be the best option. But for people who find the spartan appearance alluring, the 2017 Jeep Renegade would be an excellent choice.
