About 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata

4.1

Overall Rating

Hailed as the best selling roadsters in the market, the rear-wheel driven 2-seater makes sure to keep off gimmicks and provide a fun, spirited driving experience with a supple ride.

The Mazda MX-5 Miata is a classic and well-driving convertible. Hailed as the best selling roadsters in the market, the rear-wheel driven 2-seater makes sure to keep off gimmicks and provide a fun, spirited experience with a supple ride. Where one would think impractical, the convertible is supposed to be something of a daily driver for people with style, and also offers a drop-top at a highly affordable price tag.

It is powered by a 2.0-liter inline-4 engine that is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission that churns out 155 horses and 148 pound-feet of torque. Optionally a 6-speed automatic transmission is a lot available. It may seem minimal but the power output is quite enough to tame this soft top to your liking without actually needing the numbers to mindboggling you.

Although you can get a supple and responsive driving experience right from the most basic trim, in our option the Sport seems to frugally outfitted. The Club trims seem to be the best outfitted with a minimal increase in the price which gets you larger wheels, a limited-slip differential, retuned suspension, and 9-speaker premium audio.

2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata Review

Pros

  • Sporty and nimble handling
  • Quick and frugal powertrain

Cons

  • Cramped interior
  • Undamped noise, particularly at higher speeds

Hailed as the best selling roadsters in the market, the rear-wheel driven 2-seater makes sure to keep off gimmicks and provide a fun, spirited driving experience with a supple ride.

Pricing and Features
9.0/10

Offered in 3 trims, the Miata is available in three configurations Sport, Club, and Grand Touring. The Club is a more sport-tuned machine with several tweaks in its ride alongside additional interior features. The Grand Touring trim takes it a step further with the list of features but forgoes the Club's performance upgrades. Provided in two choices, manual or automatic, the Miata is propelled via its rear wheels and starts at $24,915.

Engine and Performance
9.1/10

Under the MX-5 sits a 2.0L inline-4 cylinder that is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission, producing 155 horses and 148 lb.-ft. of torque. Despite a smaller powertrain, the Miata is an extremely fun car to drive. With its smooth engine performance, the lightweight feels spirited and it induces a certain kind of joy every time you take it out for a spin.

Likewise, its transmission is as good as its engine and the manual gear shifts truly bring out the sporty aspects, making the Miata MX-5 one pleasurable soft top. The power is sent to the rear wheels, which gives this little Mazda one of the best driving experiences of any car, and that too at a rather affordable price.

In the competition, the Ford Mustang houses the most powerful powertrain, in its turbocharged 2.3L motor. The Fiat 124 also has a 1.4L turbocharged motor, which offers better output than the Miata MX-5. Every car in the lineup is offered with an option of a 6-speed manual gearbox, though only the Miata offers the 6-speed automatic.

2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata Convertible Acceleration

The Miata MX-5 is a zippy convertible, taking 5.6s to reach 0-60 while completing the quarter-mile in 14.5s. The naturally aspirated engine, with its brilliant throttle response and high rev-range, makes it quite a quick car, though it shows its character better in the midrange.

In its rivalry, the Mustang Fastback takes the quickest from the lot, thanks to its vastly superior powertrain, whereas the tiny Fiat 124 takes a tad bit longer. The Ford Mustang takes 5.1 seconds to 60mph, with 14.1 seconds to the quarter-mile. The Fiat 124 is the slowest of the lot with 6.0 seconds to the 60mph mark.

2017 Mazda Miata MX-5 Convertible Handling

An exemplary convertible with excellent driving dynamics and an engaging experience, the Miata MX-5 is one spirited ride! It comes with crisp handling and as a rear-wheel drive, it keeps intact the raw athleticism of a sports vehicle alongside an agile and responsive handling performance.

Get over bumps or potholes, the Miata won't budge more than it should. Cornering capabilities are spot on, waiting in patience for the next curve it needs to tackle. The engine is a naturally aspirated motor, which is a bit noisy at idle but can be quite sweet, and rev colossally high to give a brilliant throttle response.

2017 Mazda Miata MX-5 Braking

The lightweight Miata MX-5 comes to a halt from 60-0 MPH in 109 ft., which is a decent amount of time to come to a standstill. Its brake pedals have a predictable feel to it, while the lightweight of the frame makes it double easy to drive and responsive. The brakes are normal ventilated disks, made from steel, but they can take some serious abuse if you are willing.

In comparison, the high performing Ford Mustang takes a quicker stop by a few feet while the Fiat 124 takes the slowest at 113 ft. The Mazda Miata MX-5 is the lightest convertible in the bunch which most definitely shows up in its drivability and performance.

Fuel Economy
7.9/10

The Mazda Miata MX-5 is a frugal sports car. With the combination of its lightweight build and a smaller powertrain, the MX-5 gulps 26 mpg in the city, 33 mpg on the highway, and a combined 29 mpg. The Skyactiv-G motor, a tried and tested engine by Mazda, matches the standard for frugality that most Japanese cars have.

In comparison, its counterpart, the Fiat 124, produces about similar fuel efficiency but gulps a tad less fuel than the Miata on highways. The Ford Mustang with a more powerful and tuned for power, the engine is the least efficient of the competition.

Interior
6.0/10

The Miata is a convertible made for only two people, and even then it is a tight fit. As enticing as the soft top is, the cramped interior especially for taller passengers will prove problematic, with the top-up. Around the cabin, the Japanese convertible is minimalistic and avoids any gimmicks, keeping it clean and a nice interior, though higher trims do offer leather upholstery and better styling.

Its seats are comfortable and inviting and nicely clasp on to you as you slip in. they have enough bolstering and support for when you zip the Miata into turns or corners. With a squeezed interior, the cabin space is more attuned to functionality over aesthetics. Noise cancellation seems almost nonexistent; the loud exhausts, which sound attractive in the mid-range do get a bit onerous at higher speeds, where it makes a cacophony with the wind noise.

The Ford Mustang offers the best space in the front row, while it is the only car to feature a rear row. The Mustang’s rear row is barely usable and has meager headroom. The Fiat 124 has similar space to the Mazda MX-5, either of which offers meager headroom, though they do have good legroom and shoulder room. Some of the interior features included are -

  • Air Conditioning
  • Height-adjustable driver seat
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel and knob
  • Keyless entry with push-button ignition

2017 Mazda Miata MX-5 Infotainment System

From the Club trim onwards the Miata MX-5 offers a 7.0-inch touchscreen that rises from the dashboard. There is a rotary controller on the center console, and the display has the Mazda Connect System. The system is known to be easy to use and highly intuitive.

The infotainment allows some voice commands and apps like Aha, Pandora, and the internet radio. The basic audio is 6-speaker audio, while a premium 9-speaker Bose tuned system is also available. Some standout infotainment features are:

  • Bluetooth and audio connectivity
  • 6-Speaker sound system w/CD Player
  • USB Port and Auxiliary Audio Jack
  • 7.0-inch touchscreen w/ rotary knob
  • Mazda Connect System

2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata Cargo Capacity

The cramped cabin space should've given away what to expect when it comes to cargo space. Measuring 4.6 cubic feet, the MX-Miata comes with a modest trunk volume. The boot also stores the roof, which has a separator to allow better space when the top is up.

Exterior

Mazda Miata's design is feeble at the front but bulks up substantially at the rear. It has a long hood and a shorter deck. The car has a low set front grille and distinct headlamps. The hood flows through with a curve that makes it rightly appealing.

Being quite the light car, the light Miata weighs about 2332 lbs. The overall length, weight, and height give it the profile of an agile sports car. Although watch out for that 4.9 ground clearance. The Ford Mustang is much longer than the Miata, while the Fiat 124 has a similar platform and thus the same wheelbase. Some of the exterior features found on the Miata are -

  • 16 alloy wheels
  • LED headlights and taillights

Ford Mustang Ecoboost Fastback vs Mazda Miata MX-5

The new Ford Mustang is a lot more practical and powerful convertible as compared to the Miata MX-5, offering more space and interior volume. The Mustang packs a heavy punch, with its powerful engine response and speed. But in terms of drivability, the Mazda is a clear winner here. With nimble performance and crisp handling, the Miata is probably one of the best driving experiences on the road.

FIAT 124 Spider vs  Mazda Miata MX-5

The new Fiat 124 Spider and Miata MX-5 are essentially different sides of the same coin. They are built on the same platform. They are also made on the same assembly line in Mazda's Hiroshima plant but the final assembly takes place in Fiat's plant in Turin, Italy. But these cars couldn't have been more different fundamentally.

The Mazda goes blazing with a normally aspirated engine while Fiat plays the 1.4-liter turbocharged card. The car has similar dynamics to the MX-5 Miata, though the engine performance is something different. The Fiat 124 also does not offer an automatic transmission.

Final Verdict

Having been in the industry for a while, the Miata has appealed to a lot of enthusiasts purely for its raw sports car driving dynamics and a very generous sticker price. Its engine has a quick and zippy performance while its handling and ride are crisp and spirited. In terms of practicality, the Mazda MX-5 Miata tries hard but falls a bit short and there are rivals out there with better offerings in this aspect. But a nimble ride and blissful experience? - The Miata MX-5 it is.
