About 2017 Nissan 370Z

3.7

Overall Rating

The Nissan 370Z Coupe represents Nissan's endeavor to bring a sports car for the masses. Nissan subtracts unnecessary elements and focuses on a thoroughbred that is built on the promise of power and maneuverability.

From the time it stepped into North America in 1969, Nissan's Z series cars have always enjoyed a great reputation. So much so, that their yearly meets take place around the world for enthusiasts. Sharing the same legacy as the Nissan GT-R, the new Nissan 370Z enjoys a perfect blend of style and performance. No wonder this car provides a power-packed and fun ride, all while being easy on your pocket.

Priced at $29,998 and loaded with a 3.7L V6 engine paired to a manual transmission. With a sleek roofline, bulky haunches, and a long hood, it looks every bit like a sports car. Its 350-horsepower engine only adds to this notion.

Despite the 370Z's longstanding run of nine years in the US market, this is the first time that the company hasn't made many performance enhancements in a car. Despite that, with a long list of safety features and fairly impressive interiors, and improved styling, this car is one you can't simply overlook.

We suggest you go for the SportTech trim that starts at $37K and offers many added features such as a rearview camera, a premium sound system from Bose, and a navigation system. The SportTech trim stands in the middle of the trim lines and offers good value for money. You can always go for the high-end Nismo variant if outright extreme performance is what you’re looking for.

2017 Nissan 370Z Review

Pros

  • The powerful V6 engine
  • Comfortable handling
  • Sharp manual transmission
  • Enhanced styling

Cons

  • Slightly noisy
  • Not many customization options
  • Incredibly small trunk

The Nissan 370Z Coupe represents Nissan's endeavor to bring a sports car for the masses. Nissan subtracts unnecessary elements and focuses on a thoroughbred that is built on the promise of power and maneuverability.

Overview

Despite that, with a long list of safety features and fairly impressive interiors, and improved styling, this car is one you can't simply overlook.

Pricing and Features
9.0/10

The 370Z is slotted just below the flagship GT-R supercar. The base 370Z trim is priced at $29,990. It is offered with a 3.7 Liter V6 engine which is mated to a standard 6-speed manual transmission. It competes in a small pool of rear-drive sports cars. In its base trim, this Nissan coupe is a great value for money proposition. It comes with 18-inch alloy wheels and summer performance tires, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a 4-speaker audio system with Bluetooth connectivity.

The Sport trim comes with upgraded brakes and 19-inch alloy wheels. You will also get a Bose sound system and Limited-Slip Differential. The Touring trim ups its ante with additional creature comforts. The top-spec Nismo Tech trim makes the 370Z a track-focused machine. Its V6 engine is tuned to produce 18 more ponies and peak torque also gets a bump of 6 lb-ft. Nismo features a stiffer suspension and bigger brakes are provided for better-stopping power.

Engine and Performance
8.6/10

The 3.7 Liter V6 is the first production engine from Nissan that featured Variable Valve Event and Lift (VVEL). VVEL helps this unit to achieve a better torque curve. This also makes the throttle response crispier. The increase in low-end torque makes the 370Z much more responsive at lower speeds.

The Nissan is best to be had with the standard 6-speed transmission. The combination of the 3.7-liter V6 engine and the manual transmission is a forced to be reckoned with. Now add Nissan's rev-matching downshift feature to this potent mix. The result is a car that rewards you every time you get behind the wheel.

Owing to its larger V6 engine, the 370Z makes more power than the competition. But competition becomes stiffer in the mid-spec and top-spec trims. The American Muscle cars are also offered with V8 engines which outclass Nissan's VVEL V6 engine. Still, it has enough oomph to see you through most of the driving conditions.

How fast is the 2017 Nissan 370Z?

The standard naturally aspirated V6 engine offered with the base trim of a car is a rarity. Naturally aspirated engines have taken a direct hit due to stricter emission norms that are observed worldwide. With a bleak future, the automobile industry is relying more on smaller turbocharged units that produce more power and also adhere to stricter emission standards.

Nissan's engineers have come a long way with their 3.7 Liter V6 engine. Almost a decade and this engine has seen a lot of upgrades to extract the best out of it. The engine boasts of a crazy 7500 rpm redline. Floor the gas pedal, and this V6 growls like a bear.

The Nissan 370Z manages to hit the 60 MPH mark within 5.3 seconds. In its base trim, it effortlessly holds its ground against the competition. The Mustang is faster to reach 60mph by a fraction of a second and the Camaro has an identical 0-60 time as the 370Z. When it comes to quarter-mile crossing, the Mustang again is the fastest, doing it in 12.9 seconds, followed by the 370Z in 13.7 and Camaro in 13.8 seconds.

How well does the Nissan 370Z Coupe Ride and Handle?

One thing that works against the 370Z is its age. Since its introduction in 2009, the 370Z hasn't received a major refresh. Over the years, the completion has steadily incorporated major design and technological changes. The cabin has decent insulation and it fails to limit the noise from the V6 engine.

At a higher speed, the cabin can be unpleasant. The 370Z is equipped with standard summer tires. The steering offers great connectedness with the road. The precision of the steering wheel makes turning predictable. The 370Z might be a little shy on straights but it shows impeccable behavior around the corners. The 370Z is an RWD sports car and it lives up to the name.

How good are the brakes in the 2017 Nissan 370Z?

The braking on the 370Z's base trim is below average. The accumulated bulk of 3292 lbs. comes to a halt from 60 MPH within 117 ft. The competition manages to pull tighter numbers despite the greater weight. It improves a lot on the mid-spec and top-spec trims and these trims feature larger brakes.

Interior
7.1/10

The driver's seat is where you want to be. The entire dashboard layout is focused to help the driver make the best out of the car. The instrument cluster is angled towards the driver. The gauges incorporate the retro looks from yesteryears. The tachometer sits at the center of the instrument console with a big red needle.

Front visibility is good but you need to be careful with blind spots at the rear. The rear glass offers limited visibility. It is vital to adjust the rearview mirrors to escape the blind spots. The seats tuck you in during those spirited drives.

The 370Z won't charm you for its practicality. The cargo space is laughable. The cabin is a tight fit for two and lacks the nooks and crannies to keep stuff. The competition offers far better space and comfort. The Nissan, even while having just a row of seats, falls short on interior space when the front rows of these cars are compared. It’s just not where this car shines.

2017 Nissan 370Z Infotainment System

The coupe comes with a standard 6-speaker audio system, auxiliary input, Bluetooth connectivity, and iPod integration. The technology offered by Nissan is easy to use. It is a driver-focused car, and Nissan has only packed it with bare minimum equipment.

The quality of materials is reminiscent of the 370Z's Infiniti brethren. Options include a 7-inch touchscreen, a Bose sound system, and a rearview camera. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are all out of the question as the infotainment unit is minimal.

2017 Nissan 370Z Cargo Capacity

The Nissan sits on the pedestal of performance cars. It shares its place with flagship GT-R as the only performance-oriented vehicles offered by Nissan. The coupe takes a big hit when it comes to practicality, and has abysmal rear cargo space. Even the cabin has very few places to keep stuff.

Exterior
8.0/10

The current generation has been around for 8 years. It has aged well and is a pleasing thing to look at. But the coupe is not a head-turner. It is rather hard to point out the shortcomings of the design.

Nissan hasn't left much room to nitpick about things. The 370Z has a low curb weight and a peppy V6 engine that inspires spirited driving. It is a jolly good machine around the corners but it takes a big hit when it comes to practicality.

Nissan 370Z Vs Ford Mustang EcoBoost

The Ford Mustang is an American icon. The Mustang received a major overhaul in 2016. When compared to the Nissan 370Z, the Ford is fresh out of the box. Mustang's EcoBoost engine is tuned for 310 hp and a healthy 320 lb-ft of torque.

The new Ford Mustang also is more advanced and also carries a lower sticker price ($26,195). It offers better practicality with its seating capacity for persons and a generous 13 cu-ft. cargo space. But the Mustang is no 370Z around the corners.

Nissan 370Z Vs Chevrolet Camaro 1LS

The new Chevrolet Camaro is priced at $25,905. It undercuts its rivals with its clever pricing. The Camaro's turbocharged I4 engine produces 275 hp and 295 lb-ft. of torque. Chevy offers a seating capacity similar to the Mustang. It presents itself as a good choice with a roomy cabin and a practical cargo space.

The Nissan 370Z Coupe represents Nissan's endeavor to bring a sports car for the masses. The manufacturer subtracts unnecessary elements and focuses on a thoroughbred that is built on the promise of power and maneuverability. The 370Z surely has its rough edges but it is a rewarding car for the driver.

Final Verdict

The pricing starts at the north of $29,000. The V6 engine howls at higher revs and the cabin ambiance can be unpleasant for the liking of a few. The ride is compliant but at the same time, the 370Z is not meant to satisfy you with its plethora of creature comforts. The age of the vehicle is also an issue. The Nissan 370Z is due for a major refresh in a couple of years.

Then again some people wouldn't like to part with their beloved roaring V6 engine and its 6-speed manual transmission. If you are on a budget but you want something that howls and growls and flies around the corners then the 370Z is a lot of car for your money.
