About 2017 Nissan Altima

4.1

Overall Rating

The 2017 Nissan Altima will carry over unchanged from last year. The 2016 Nissan Altima got redesigned front and rear fascias along with some new features and an all-new SR trim. So for the year 2017, there's hardly any change to what this mid-size sedan has to offer. The price of the 2017 Altima starts at $23,395 for the base model. All variants get a 2.5L four-cylinder and FWD as standard. There is also a 3.5L V6 on offer with the SR and SL trims.

The 2017 Nissan Altima carries over from last year without any major changes. It got redesigned front and rear fascias along with some new features and an all-new SR trim. Rest all of the car is the intact, and carries over similar positives and negatives as well. However, the update could have given the interior a much needed refresh, which Nissan did not consider.

The price of the 2017 Altima starts at $23,395 for the base model. All variants get a 2.5L four-cylinder and FWD as standard. There is also a 3.5L V6 on offer with the SR and SL trims. Both engines mate to a CVT but the bigger V6 motor offers manual mode and column-mounted paddle shifters.

The 2.5 SR strikes as the ideal balance among all the trims and it comes with added benefits like improved handling, thanks to the included sport suspension. Other than that, it also features steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters, 8-way power-adjustable driver's seat, and 18-inch wheels with a machine finish. The Special Edition package adds a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with SiriusXM radio, navigation services, and remote engine start.

I like my car

Pros

I can hook my phone to my car, to answer the phone and to listen to music, and podcast., It helps me get from point a to point b.

Cons

It's not an SUV, It's not high enough

I like how my car drives and it tells me if there is something wrong with it if you listen to it. The defrost and AC works perfectly well. The interior of the car is great my car is white on the outside and black on the inside. The safety feature is it tells me if I'm low on oil or transmission and if my tires are low.

2017 Nissan Altima Review

Pros

  • Front Seats are comfortable
  • User-friendly and affordable navigation radio
  • Good Design and Styling
  • Excellent fuel economy for a sedan of its size

Cons

  • Dated Technology interface
  • Interior design and materials lack the high-quality look and feel of some competitors

Overview

Pricing and Features
9.0/10

The lineup of the 2017 Nissan Altima starts with the base model priced at $23,395. It is followed by four other trim levels: S, SR, SV, SL. All these trim levels get the same 2.5L inline-four engine as standard. However on the SR and SL trims, one has the option to opt for a 3.5L V6 engine.

But no matter the choice of powertrain, both engines come mated to a CVT unit sending power exclusively to the front wheels. The transmission paired to the bigger 3.5L V6 does, however, offer a manual mode. So people driving the 2017 Nissan Altima 3.5 SR or 3.5 SL will be able to take control of gear shifts with the help of paddle shifters.

Engine and Performance
7.2/10

"The CVT is more responsive when you press on the gas pedal compared to its competitors, and the simulated stepped gears reduce some of the engine drone that others suffer from." - Edmunds

The 2.5-liter inline 4-cylinder engine of the Nissan Altima is sufficiently refined and perfectly adequate for such a sedan. It is smooth along with commendable refinement levels and produces 179 horsepower and 177lb-ft of torque. If you desire more performance, go for the 3.5-liter V6 engine which is rated at 270 horsepower. The continuously variable transmission has undergone a massive improvement than the one in the previous models. Now it is very responsive and smooth, and works so well with everyday use that you might even forget that it's a CVT.

The transmission behaves more like a conventional 7-speed automatic when the driver flats the acceleration pedal. But it slides back into its default programming if the shift is held for long during partial-throttle acceleration. The steering may feel a bit slow but it's very accurate. It also features an understeer control system that applies brakes to the front wheel in order to tighten the cornering lines. The Nissan Altima and the Toyota Camry compete in close quarters as the former has a higher horsepower output of 179 against the latter's 178 hp.

Even the Subaru Legacy and Ford Fusion share similar engine output with only a slight difference in torque. Leaving everyone behind, the Toyota Camry ends up having the best acceleration time of 7.6 seconds in the 0-60 mph dash. Even the Nissan Altima pulls up impressive stats by coming second best with its 8.2 seconds 0-60 mph run. It is followed by the Fusion with only a difference of three milliseconds. The Subaru Legacy turns out to be the slowest to hit the 60mph mark in 9.1 seconds.

After suffering from the lowest engine output and acceleration performance, the Subaru buckles up and exhibits the best braking power by bringing the vehicle at the fastest by covering a distance of 119 feet. The Altima sedan ends up being the second-best with a stopping distance of 121 feet. The 11.7-inch front brakes and 11.5-inch rear brakes don't suffer from any deficiencies. Moreover, the brake pedals feel firm enough for you to cruise the 2017 Nissan Altima Sedan at highway speeds in confidence.

Fuel Economy
8.3/10

Something that makes a sedan an ideal choice for any family is fuel efficiency; irrespective of the fact whether you are driving around cities or racing down the highways. The continuously variable transmission of the Altima has a lot to do with doing exactly that. The 2.5-liter inline 4cylinder engine rates at 27 mpg in cities, 39 mpg on highways, and 31 mpg combined.

The 3.5-liter V6 engine takes a little dip, rating at 22 mpg in cities, 32 mpg on highways, and 26 mpg combined. The Altima has the best fuel economy ratings. It is followed by the Subaru Legacy with 25 mpg in cities, 34 mpg on highways, and 29 mpg combined.

Camry doesn't fall behind by much and rates at 24 mpg in cities, 33 mpg on highways, and 27 mpg combined. Last but not the least, the Ford turns out to be the least fuel-efficient among the four with 21 mpg in cities, 32 mpg on highways, and 25 mpg combined.

Interior
7.6/10

"These NASA-inspired zero gravity seats conform to your body and keep you comfortable through the longest of journeys." - Cars.USNews.Com

The Nissan Altima has a decent cabin design along with good build quality. The interior materials are made of robust quality materials and the controls are well within the reach of the driver while driving. The front seats of the sedan are designed to ensure long-distance comfort. An elevated seat cushion promotes enhanced forward visibility. There is enough headroom and legroom for the rear seats as well.

All four vehicles have a similar passenger capacity of five. In terms of the front seats, the Altima and the Legacy share the largest headroom while Camry has the least of it. The Altima has the most front row legroom space as well while Camry continues to suffer in the same area as well. Coming to the rear seats, the Camry jumps back with the most generous headroom and legroom.

While the Subaru Legacy has the least headroom in the 2nd row, the Altima has comparatively congested legroom at just 36.1 inches. Being a family sedan, the other downside of the Altima sedan is its small cabin space of 15.4 cubic feet. The Ford Fusion turns out to be most spacious in terms of cargo space with 16 cubic feet while the miseries for Subaru pile up with its smallest 15 cubic feet trunk.

The infotainment system of the Altima mid-size sedan isn't something to be impressed with either. It comes with a standard 5-inch screen and higher trims house a 7-inch touch screen display. Thankfully, it is compatible with Apple Carplay and Android Auto. The interface is easy to use and quite responsive with well-organized menu icons and crisp images. Some of the highlighted infotainment features of the Altima sedan are:

  • Bose stereo system with 2 subwoofers and 9 total speakers
  • USB connection with external media control
  • Auxiliary audio input
  • Speed sensitive volume control
  • Satellite radio
  • AM/FM stereo

Exterior

"Despite a facelift last year, the Altima is largely innocuous-but that's not an insult, since many mainstream sedan buyers aren't after something flashy." - TheCarConnection.Com

Like most of the mid-size family sedans, the Altima isn't a combination of diverse dimensions as they share similar basic design cues and are identical in size as well. It is no different from the herd of mid-size sedans and does very little on its part to stand out among the crowd. After the 2016 redesign, however, this midsize sedan has started to look a lot dapper.

The front end of the Altima looks quite attractive though, with a mildly aggressive appeal and tasteful chrome inserts including the front-grille as well. The side profile looks slimmer than average with a nice sculpted line running down the lower portion of the doors, ending at the rear wheel arches. It has the lightest bodyweight at under 3200 lbs, it is the longest in length, has the least height, and the shortest ground clearance.

The heaviest Subaru Legacy is also with the least length, is certainly the tallest among the four, and has the smallest wheelbase. The Ford favors the largest width and has the largest ground clearance and largest wheelbase. Finally, the Camry is a dimensionally well-balanced car except for being the least wide. Its most catchy exterior features are:

  • Rear defogger
  • Variable intermittent wipers
  • All-season tires and alloy wheels
  • Daytime running lights
  • Dusk sensing headlamps
  • Front fog and driving lights
  • Turn signal mirrors
  • Ventilated front and solid rear disc brakes

2016 Nissan Altima vs 2016 Subaru Legacy

With a heap of safety tech and all-wheel drive as standard, the Subaru Legacy makes a sweet deal for sedan lovers. The two engine options - a 2.5-liter flat-4 and a 3.6-liter flat-6 - paired with a continuously variable transmission make it a solid performer.

The comfortable interior experience is amplified by its Smartphone integrated compatible infotainment system. In comparison with the Nissan, the Subaru has slightly less engine power and considerably slower acceleration. It has good braking skills but it takes a slight dip in its fuel economy.

2017 Nissan Altima vs 2017 Ford Fusion

From posh looks to everyday usability, the Ford Fusion has something to offer to everyone. With a couple of engine choices, a 6-speed transmission, and standard front-wheel - all-wheel-drive is optional - the Fusion offers many customization opportunities.

The stiffened suspension takes credit for its athletic handling and muscular stance. When compared with the Altima, we see that the Fusion has a slightly lower engine output and lacks behind in acceleration by a bit as well. Its braking and fuel economy aren't impressive as well.

2017 Nissan Altima vs 2017 Toyota Camry

The 2017 Nissan Altima does not fare well against the 2017 Toyota Camry. The Camry is a better car overall, with a roomy and posh interior, with high quality materials. Also, the Camry features more standard features than the Altima. The Camry also features Siri Eyes Free.

The Nissan Altima does offer good braking power and some great handling characteristics. It also has a better fuel economy than the Camry. However, the Camry is reliable, and this has been proven with its outstanding reliability ratings.

Final Verdict

The 2017 Nissan Altima is a feature-packed sedan at an attractive starting price of $23,395. Even though its looks and design can be a bit polarizing, its practicality and performance are undeniably strong among the segment rivals. It has a decently-equipped cabin, delivers strong performance via its engine options, and gets some excellent safety ratings from both the NHTSA and the IIHS as well. Overall, it poses as a worthy contender amidst the fiercely competitive market.
