About 2017 Toyota Camry

4.3

Overall Rating

The Camry’s 178-horsepower four-cylinder base engine provides sufficient power to get you from point A to point B. However, frequent highway drivers will want to step up to the 268-horsepower V6, which offers quicker acceleration.

The Camry is your 'Everyday-Drive-Sedan'. With a charismatic interior, impressive performance, eloquent seating, convenient driving, and a vast array of convenient features, the Camry makes for itself, a unique name in the market. The Camry trims are diligently designed for car enthusiasts - both Sport and Luxury.

The new Toyota Camry sits near the top of our midsize car rankings. It has plenty of rear passenger space, a good-looking cabin, a perfect predicted reliability rating, and strong safety scores. It's a comfortable commuter without much pretension; a very good appliance for car buyers who prefer substance over style.

If you need a car for your city rides, office commutes, or long drives, the Camry has it all to offer. With its superior fuel economy and impressive performance, coupled with luxury interiors and convenient handling, Camry beats its competitors any day. The SE trim is the most recommended for any practical buyer. Its convenient features along with the sporty outlook do the trick. Also, you can opt for the 3.5L V-6 engine, if you hit the tracks often.

2017 Toyota Camry Review

Pros

  • Spacious back seat
  • Comfortable ride

Cons

  • Outdated infotainment system

The Camry’s 178-horsepower four-cylinder base engine provides sufficient power to get you from point A to point B. However, frequent highway drivers will want to step up to the 268-horsepower V6, which offers quicker acceleration.

The Camry is your 'Everyday-Drive-Sedan'. The Camry trims are diligently designed for car enthusiasts - both Sport and Luxury.

It's a comfortable commuter without much pretension; a very good appliance for car buyers who prefer substance over style.

Pricing and Features
8.0/10

The Camry comes with 4 standard trims. The base trim is the LE, priced at $23,070. Their SE and the XSE trims are more crafted for a sporty outlook whilst the LE and the XLE have trims that have the better luxury upgrades.

The 2017 Camry's base trim (LE) is priced at $23,070. At this tag, it is a little heavier than the Honda Accord ($22,355) and the Hyundai Sonata ($21,600) and quite honestly, both these have a very scanty amount of upper hand in their Infotainment system, equipped with Apple CarPlay and the Android Auto - they aren't aboard on your Camry!

Engine and Performance
7.8/10

Like the average mid-size car segment, the standard versions of the 2017 Camry comes with a regular 2.5 L i-4, which makes up to 178 hp at 170 lb-ft Torque. The Camry's engine comes with two choices, either the regular i-4 or the more powerful V-6. The 3.5 L V-6 engine is more powerful, producing 268 hp at 248 lb-ft Torque. Upgrading to the V-6 will cost you $5000 more.

Both the Sonata and the Accord come with stock 2.4 L i-4 engines. The capacity for the Camry is just slightly higher, but it's at most comparable with the rest. The Accord's engine delivers 189 hp, marginally stronger than the Camry. Sonata's engine also delivers 185 hp, the following suit. The Malibu stalls at 160 hp, much lower than the Camry.

2017 Toyota Camry Sedan Acceleration

Though the 2017 Camry is more of a mid-sized sedan known for its luxurious and comfortable ride around the city, it also has a fair acceleration to keep up with the competition. Its 2.5-liter 4 cylinder engine is powerful enough to make the car etch a 0-60 mph time of 8 seconds and completes a quarter-mile in 16.32 seconds.

Here's how the Camry's acceleration lines up with its peers.

The Honda Accord gets first place in the competition with a 0-60 mph time of 7.6 seconds. It is followed by the Sonata with its 0-60 mph time of 7.9 seconds, just quicker than the Camry. The Malibu becomes the last to reach the finish line with a 0-60 mph time of 8.2 seconds due to its comparatively less powered engine

2017 Toyota Camry Sedan Ride and handling

The Camry offers a Semi-Automatic Transmission with its paddle shifters, which enhances the ride quality proportionately. This feature isn't available in either the Accord or the Sonata. All modern-day sedans are equipped with the FWD drivetrain, which ensures better control of the city traffic and also, optimal fuel consumption.

On the other hand, steering your Camry is an absolute delight. Toyota has indeed left no stone unturned to ensure the luxury of its upscale interiors aid on to its top-of-the-class driving experience. All Camry trims have electric power steering. The Wheel itself is no short of comfort as the SE models have a nice looking leather-wrapped steering wheel, stitched for handling convenience.

2017 Toyota Camry Sedan Braking

The Camry is designed for its ulterior performance and is a very reliable car for you and your family. The powerful V-6 engine decelerates from 70 mph to a complete halt at 189 feet. The Nickel battery-powered hybrid powertrain halts at 178 feet. Camry's with the stock i-4 engines come to a halt at 175 feet. This makes the Camry one of the safest cars on road, and the fact is only strengthened by its braking characteristic, which is good enough among its peers:

There's enough credibility on the Camry's engine that it already gives it a run for its class already. The Camry does very well compared to its peers for a number of reasons and makes for a great choice. Much better than the Honda Accord in terms of braking, nevertheless!

Fuel Economy
7.7/10

The Camry offers a decent fuel economy and is among the best in class. You won't have to worry about hitting the refill station often. The Fuel Economy for the standard 2.5 L i-4 engine gives 24 city/33 highway - 26 combined. Consequently, the more powerful 3.5 L V-6 engine gives 21 city/30 highway - 24 combined. Over the previous year's model, the overall fuel economy has gone down from 25 city/34 highway - 28 combined, for the standard 2.5 L i-4.

The Malibu wins the cake this time, earning 36 mpg on the highway. The Camry performs a little below average than its peers. Considering the statistics, it is no more of a tangible choice to choose among the three. The Honda as well as the Hyundai have similar fuel economies.

However, the vast array of luxuries the Camry provides, coupled with its extra comfort of driving makes it a subtle and decent pick. The base LE trim will make a great pick, however, the upgraded 3.5 L V-6 engine is sure to add the extra horsepower you'd want on a Texas freeway, in the best Fuel economy.

Interior
9.9/10

The seats in the 2017 Camry are an absolute luxury. The material quality and the finishing gives it its upscale, posh outlook. All Camry's have the 8-way power-adjustable driver seat with lumbar support. The 8-way power-adjustable driver seats in XLE and XSE trims are heated as well, which aids the already upscale interior. There are certain red stitching inserts on the Camry's door, the steering and the gearknob, which look stunning.

To add to it, there's faux leather seating trim on the edges of the seat on the SE. The LE has Cloth seating trim on the edges. On the other hand, there's ample space on the interior of the 2017 Camry but is at par with its peers. Here's how their features list:

Lined up with its peers, the Camry does better in a few aspects, offering more rear legroom and shoulder room. There's also greater rear headroom for the Camry. However, it is evident that the Sonata has a lot more space than the Accord or the Camry, and is a good choice. But even then, the convenience features of the Camry, coupled with its safety record makes up for a great buy and is definitely worth considering.

The Camry's interior is spacious and comfortable, with wide, accommodating front seats and a back seat that's big enough for adults. The center stack is extremely well organized, with intuitive buttons and knobs to control the car's infotainment and climate-control systems.

The Camry's quality shows in its interior. The cabin is attractive and filled with quality materials. The infotainment controls are intuitive and easy to use while driving. There is plenty of room in the front and the back, and taller passengers won't feel cramped in the rear. Let's see what features the comes loaded up with to provide you with a great driving experience:

  • Air Conditioning
  • Audio And Cruise Controls On Steering Wheel
  • Front And Rear Cupholders
  • Overhead Console With Storage
  • Front Seatback Storage
  • Cruise Control
  • Front And Rear Door Pockets
  • Electric Power Steering
  • Rear View Camera
  • Tilt And Telescopic Steering Wheel
  • Dual Vanity Mirrors
  • Interior Air Filtration

2017 Toyota Camry Sedan Infotainment

All trims have an in-tune infotainment center. The infotainment on the Camry ensures all your music needs are adeptly taken care of, in addition to several other perks. The basic in-tune system is loaded with a lot of interesting features. It has Audio Settings, Phone Pairing - that allows you to see your phone apps on the infotainment screen, Bluetooth Connectivity, Hands-Free Calling.

There's Navigation with traffic reports, Weather Report, and a Reverse Camera (to make sure you don't run anyone or anything over). The one thing about the Camry's infotainment that separates that amongst the rest is the high level of customization it offers. Let's see what Infotainment features it offers us, in detail:

  • Auxiliary Audio Input and USB With External Media Control
  • USB Connection
  • AM/FM Stereo
  • Speed-Sensitive Volume Control
  • 6 Total Speakers

2017 Toyota Camry Sedan Cargo Capacity

Cargo space is ample but not quite class-leading, with 15 cubic feet of storage in the trunk. The Hyundai Sonata, Chevrolet Malibu and the Honda Accord are mostly in the same line. Their differences amount to less than a cubic foot in each case. Again an intangible call.

There's enough space in the trunk to back 6 pieces of luggage. This holds true for all cars in this segment. With the rear seats folded, you can pack as many as 15 bags in your Camry. There's no considerable difference except the Chevrolet Malibu, in which you can push in as many as 17 bags. All mid-size cars have around similar space in the trunk. The Camry is no exception.

Exterior
7.5/10

The Camry is narrower and shorter than many other family sedans, though the margin is a few inches or less in each case. With such a small variation compared to the competition, it's hard to notice any real-world effects of the Camry's relatively small footprint. Like all mid-size sedans, the new Toyota Camry is easy to maneuver into parking spaces and through cramped garages.

While there's no eye-catcher in the figures above, the Camry does well, marginally nonetheless. It has a much better ground clearance compared to its peers, being almost the same size. The wheelbase of the Camry is an attraction, with each of the Camry trims offering enhanced wheel dimensions with a touch of fancy.

From the exterior, the Camry looks largely reserved with brief flashes of bold styling. Most notably, its "mechanical catfish" grille returns from last year and could be the car's most polarizing statement. It's unusually bold for Toyota and something that may not turn off many buyers from considering a Camry, but almost certainly won't turn many on. Around the sides and rear, the Camry is handsome without overstating or relying on modern languages like a floating roof or a too-high window line. Let’s see what the Camry has to flaunt on its body:

  • Compact Spare Tire Mounted Inside Under Cargo
  • Clearcoat Paint
  • Body-Colored Front Bumper
  • Body-Colored Rear Bumper
  • Chrome Side Windows Trim
  • Body-Colored Door Handles
  • Body-Colored Power Heated Side Mirrors w/Manual Folding
  • Fixed Rear Window w/Defroster

  • Front License Plate Bracket
  • Trunk Rear Cargo Access
  • Fully Automatic Projector Beam Halogen Daytime Running Headlamps w/Delay-Off

Safety
9.1/10

The Camry received a 5star rating from the NHTSA and an overall "Good" rating from the IIHS. All trims have a star safety system. This consists of Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control, Four Wheel Anti-Lock Brakes, Brake Assist, and Smart Stop Technology that automatically swings into action if the car senses an accident coming up.

  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC)
  • ABS And Driveline Traction Control

Competition

Toyota Camry vs Hyundai Sonata

The Camry and Sonata are on top of the midsize sedan segment. If you plan to haul passengers on a regular basis, note the Camry has more rear legroom, but the Sonata offers more overall passenger space. The new Hyundai Sonata will save you about $100 a year at the gas pump, but more importantly, the base model has a sticker price of about $1,500 lower than a comparable Camry. The Sonata, in comparison, has a lower price, better fuel economy, and overall space including a slightly larger trunk.

The interior of the Sonata has a long way to go before it catches up to the Camry. The leather seat back-pockets, central armrest, bolster gripped steering and luxury seats will ensure all-around comfort in the cabin, something the Sonata can't offer.

Toyota Camry vs Honda Accord

The new Honda Accord and Camry have a lot in common - both vehicles come with base-trim four-cylinder engines with comparable power and good safety scores - but for those who like a sportier driving experience, the Honda Accord is the better choice.

You can get it with a six-speed manual transmission and either the base four-cylinder engine or the available V6 engine, which has slightly more horsepower and responsive handling that bests the Camry. The Accord's starting MSRP is about $700 less than the Camry's. If you're buying the Sedan for purposes other than a daily lap of your local motocross track, the Camry is the one to go for.

Toyota Camry vs Chevrolet Malibu

In spite of the Malibu being about $1,400 cheaper, the Camry is the better choice because it offers more standard features in its base trim, including a heated power driver's seat, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, heated mirrors, a long list of infotainment features, dual climate control, and leather seats.

The new Chevrolet Malibu has little in common with its blander predecessors. Its fuel economy is better than the Camry's, and it has a straightforward infotainment system and spacious rear seats. Apart from that, Camry wins the Malibu over, especially considering the stock Malibu comes only with a 1.5 L Turbocharged engine, which requires timely, expensive maintenance.

Final Verdict

The Camry makes up for a great ride for all your needs. It's top of class interiors coupled with impressive performance and driving comfort together place the Camry a class apart. The affirm standalone edge of the Camry over its market peers is its high level of customization and ultimate driving comfort.

The four trims of the 2017 Toyota Camry have specific offerings as per your needs. However, the SE trim fares above the rest for a practical buyer, or if you're looking to get the most out of your Camry at the right price. You may also opt for the more pricey XLE trim with the powerful V-6 engine, but the upscale leather filled interiors are truly worth the price.

Choosing the Camry is already within your mind if you wish to go for the mid-size sedan because the Camry is already among the top names. With all its offerings, the 2017 Toyota Camry has to be on your watch-for list!
