The 2017 Corolla is available for sale at a price starting at an MSRP of $19,395 and the 1.8L 132 hp inline-4 engine returns a maximum of 32 MPG combined.

The Toyota Corolla is pretty affordable for any of its variants. Coming to the options it offers, every single variant has its own specialty and comfort levels. You can simply choose one that suits your requirement or budget. As for recommendations, if you can afford the SE trim then save some extra and get the best variant either the XSE or the SE 6MT.

2017 Toyota Corolla Review

Pros

  • Impressive fuel efficiency
  • Lot of options to choose from
  • High reliability and resale value
  • Spacious rear seat legroom

Cons

  • Infotainment system is sluggish
  • Engine performance is underwhelming

The Toyota Safety Suite is now made standard across all trims and it is now available in 7 different trims apart from the 2017 Toyota Corolla IM hatchback. The 2017 Corolla is available for sale at a price starting at an MSRP of $19,395 and the 1.8L 132 hp inline-4 engine returns a maximum of 32 MPG combined.

Overview

To commemorate the 50 years of the Corolla, the 2017 Toyota Corolla gets a new front-end design and a special 50th Anniversary Special Edition model. Pricing and Features
8.5/10

The 2017 Toyota Corolla Sedan is a car with many looks. It has 8 different variants that are the L, LE, LE Eco, SE, SE 6MT, XLE, XSE, and the 50th-anniversary special edition. Well, there is not much difference in pricing but in terms of features they all are different. Toyota made a smart move by offering variants instead of different packages. The LE Eco features a 140 hp 4-cylinder engine with an improved Fuel economy.

The L is the base variant while the XSE is the highest tier model. The SE model that we are talking about is on the sports side of Corolla, It has its own unique Front Fascia with daytime running light, sports seat, a different LED taillight, and several other safety and performance features. The very unique 50th anniversary special is loaded with tech and infotainment features.

While both the L & LE trims come bare bones and have very few creature comforts to offer, the 50th Anniversary Special Edition does not add much value to the buyers apart from the exclusivity. The LE Eco is a trim best suited for the ones who want to extract maximum efficiency of their car.

Buying Advice

The Toyota Corolla offers a trim for every buyer, but in our opinion, the Corolla SE makes the most sense.

Priced at an MSRP of $21,340, it adds quite a few creature comforts for the buyer and yet keeps its price check. Apart from the sporty styling and driving dynamics, the SE trim also adds steering-mounted paddle shifters, leather steering wheel, leatherette upholstery, and larger 17-inch alloy wheels. Also, with the Premium package, one can get a sunroof and the larger infotainment system with navigation for an added price.

Engine and Performance
5.7/10

The 2017 Toyota Corolla SE or any other variants features a 132 hp 1.8L 4-cylinder engine with a CVT automatic transmission and a front-wheel drivetrain. Toyota has not changed the engine or made any improvements to it all because of its reliability and durability. The standard engine produces 128 lb-ft of torque whereas the LE Eco model has 8 more horsepower under its hood and produces 126 lb-ft of torque for better fuel economy.

The steering is precise, but not responsive; the throttle doesn't pack that punch of power and it is a bit laggy. Moreover, the car feels numb even though the sports exhaust doesn't bring that sporty sound. Its low hood sure increases visibility for easier handling, but it's best used in its comfort zone of a relaxed drive with its soft suspension setup which aims at providing comfort for long drives and as a family car.

The Toyota Corolla takes around 9.9 seconds for the 0-60 MPH sprint and hits the quarter-mile in a rather lethargic 17.5 seconds. From the performance perspective, it lacks the punch, power drive, throttle response and doesn't have good reviews about its sportiness so far. The Toyota Corolla takes 126 feet to come to a complete halt in the 60-0 MPH braking test.

The Corolla is not the best here as the Mazda 3 Sport steals the spotlight and leads the segment with its 155 hp powerhouse followed by Kia and Honda. Mazda is the quickest of the lot while both Forte and Civic offer similar performance. That said, the Kia Forte is far more affordable than the Honda Civic.

Fuel Economy
8.5/10

The 2017 Toyota Corolla offers pretty impressive fuel efficiencies, and the LE Eco variant is more efficient than all other variants. As standard, the Corolla is rated for 28 MPG in the city, 36 MPG on the highways, and 32 MPG combined, as for the LE Eco returns 30/40/34 MPG in city/highway/combined as per EPA.

Interior
7.2/10

The interior of the 2017 Toyota Corolla Sedan can be described as exquisite. It doesn’t really feel like a compact sedan by ‘Toyota’ owing to the fact that Corolla's cabin looks very posh and upscale when compared to rivals in the class. The Toyota Corolla offers a rich experience in the roomy cabin which is made up of quality hard plastics and includes a dashing cloth upholstery. The quality and level of finish is above par and will leave one impressed.

The 2017 Toyota Corolla SE is a 4-door 5-seater compact sedan. The one thing that Corolla can do better than others is the comfort it offers. It features 3-spoke Leather-wrapped multi-function steering wheels with paddle shifters, has a 6-way adjustable driver and 4-way adjustable passenger sport seats, and 60/40-fold down rear seats with a fold-down center armrest. It offers a 13.0 cubic foot of cargo space which can be increased thanks to the split-folding rear seats.

It has a new feature called 'Scout GPS' which can be used by downloading an app on your phone which will graph GPS onto the car. It does not have Apple CarPlay or android auto which are now standard basic features on cars in this segment. The infotainment features can be upgraded through several optional packages it offers and also changes between variants.

Exterior
7.5/10

Compared to the older models on the Corolla lineup, Toyota has refreshed the front of the 2017 Toyota Corolla with Bi-LED lights that come standard in all variants. On the design front, there is nothing out of the box on the Corolla, but ironically it has everything to make it stand out in the crowd. The angular headlamps with the sleek grille, rather simple and plain sides, and a unique rear taillight design is all the Corolla's exterior can be defined with.

The looks of this car change as you switch between variants for the SE variant; it has its own unique front fascia, daytime running lights, and LED reverse tail light with 17-inch wheels. The 2017 Toyota Corolla SE is a sports variant of the 2017 Corolla lineup. It has some of the most sporty exterior details you can see on a Corolla. It has a 6.7 inch of ground clearance and Toyota offers the Corolla in 8 different paint colors.

Competition
8.0/10

2017 Toyota Corolla vs 2017 Mazda 3

The new Mazda 3 Sports is the only car in this competition that offers true sports performance in an affordable price bracket. The Mazda 3 Sport costs $18,095 and features a 155hp powerhouse with a 6-speed automatic and easily overpowers the Corolla in power, performance, and fuel economy. It has the same interior and exterior dimensions except for the length. The Toyota Corolla, on the other hand, has better comfort and is more convenient for a family compact car but the Mazda 3 sports have it overpowered if compared in the overall aspect.

2017 Toyota Corolla vs 2017 Kia Forte

The new Kia Forte is not much different from the Corolla in terms of performance, it does have a little powerful engine and better fuel economy but is the same in interior dimension. The Corolla SE and the Forte S balance each other in several aspects and there is not much difference in the price either. The Corolla might get beaten in the handling and drive experience segment but has an advantage in comfort and convenience.

2017 Toyota Corolla vs 2017 Honda Civic

While the 2017 Civic is more expensive than the Corolla, it is quicker off the mark, is more enjoyable to drive, and offers an impressive fuel efficiency as well. Though the 2017 Corolla offers tons of space for the rear seat passengers, Honda offers a more premium interior and a larger trunk. The high reliability and resale value from both Toyota and Honda is similar as well, making the Honda Civc the winner here.
