Pricing and Features
9.0/10

The 2017 Toyota Prius hybrid comes in seven trims options, starting with the base model One. Engine and Performance
7.3/10

Toyota generally prefers design evolution as a design revolution and that’s exactly what we see under the hood of the 2017 Toyota Prius Hybrid. With a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine, power and torque come in at 95 horsepower and 105 pound-feet of torque. When you add in the hybrid system with two electric motors generators, we get a modest total of 121 horsepower. Power transmission is done via a CVT automatic transmission to the front wheels.

The hybrid engine under the hood is one of the best in its segment. It is not the most powerful but works super-efficiently and the transition from gasoline to hybrid occurs perfectly without any issue. The newly improved engine on this Toyota Hybrid is more powerful than the last generation but still lacks in terms of power output when compared to its rivals. The engine is smooth and may sound a little harsh when the car crosses 60 mph mark.

The 2017 Chevrolet Volt is the most powerful hatchback in this comparison with 149 hp but this comes with really expensive pricing. It is followed by the2017 Hyundai Ioniq with 139 hp. The Lexus CT 200h comes in third with 134 hp. It is the second-most pricey vehicle but that crosses with the luxury it offers. Thus the Toyota Prius hybrid is the least powerful vehicle in this comparison. Only the Hyundai Ioniq uses a 6-speed automatic transmission while the other three rivals transmit power through a CVT.

How quick is the 2017 Toyota Prius Hybrid from 0-60 MPH?

The Toyota Prius Hybrid is more fun than you’d expect. If you drive on any Los Angeles freeway long enough, you will eventually see a Prius rocketing at ludicrous speed. If you want to drive the Prius like a maniac, you still can but it just takes a little patience.

The 2017 Toyota Prius Hybrid accelerates from 0-60 mph in 9.6 seconds, while the quarter-mile distance is covered in 18.2 seconds. That’s fairly good for a hybrid car, but there are few of its competitors that do a better job at acceleration.

With just a few seconds away, the Toyota Prius drops in the third spot. The Lexus CT 200h takes almost the same time as the Toyota Prius hybrid to reach 60 mph but is agile enough to finish the quarter-mile test in 15.7 seconds beating all its competitors.

How does the 2017 Toyota Prius Hybrid handle?

Toyota has made a big deal out of this generation of the Prius handling better than the last generation and it’s definitely true. The riding experience with the Toyota Prius Hybrid is better than compared to what the other competitors offer. The car is very smooth and steady but the may get harsh on rough surfaces.

The steering on the Prius is very smooth and responsive. The front visibility and viewing angles are great while driving. The reverse parking sensors on the car are helpful for a hatchback and they are very well-packed with a rear parking system. The Prius Hybrid offers a spacious cabin making the riding experience very comfortable.

How is the braking performance of the 201 Toyota Prius Hybrid?

The braking system in the 2017 Toyota Prius Hybrid has been improved for this year. However, the braking feel is still a bit unusual. The transitions between regenerative braking and friction braking are not as smooth as we see in other hybrids. The Prius Hybrid packs a 10.0-inch disk braking disc at the front, while it gets a slightly bigger 10.2-inch disc at the rear.

The 2017 Toyota Prius Hybrid is equipped with smaller disc brakes than the competitors, still, the hatchback provides better braking performance as compared to a few of its rivals. The Prius Hybrid takes 121 feet to come to a standstill from 60 mph.

The 2017 Chevy Volt with 119 feet provides the best braking performance and is followed by the Toyota Prius Hybrid. The Hyundai Ioniq loses in the braking department with a stopping distance of 124 feet from 60 mph. It’s a shame for the Lexus CT 200h for having the longest stopping distance in this competition. Despite having low curb weight, the Lexus took 124 feet to halt.

Interior
7.7/10

As with the exterior, Toyota has gone for a more immersive form in the Prius’ cabin. The 2017 Toyota Prius interior is spacious and designed adorned with high-quality premium materials. The multi-layered dashboard is a break from the norm. Sitting high up on the dash is the centrally-mounted instrumentation screen that is one of the unique features that is not available in any other competitor. Leatherette seats are standard and what comes as a pleasant surprise is just how comfortable these seats are.

Cushioning is supple with the front seats offering good comfort even for long drives. The rear seats are more than pleasant with a considerable spacing on offer. The center console looks like a stormtroopers codpiece. Despite a confining roofline, many passengers enjoy plentiful headspace while the middle position qualifies as reasonably inhabitable. Regardless of where you sit, nicely-contoured seats and improved materials aside from the headliner make this the most inviting Prius.

Exterior
7.5/10

There is some crazy exterior styling language on the 2017 Toyota Prius Hybrid. Almost concept-car-like in appearance, the Prius Hybrid is a radical mix of sharp surfaces and soft elements. The nose is a melange of sharp lines and creases, the tail is similarly stylized and some might say ungainly. The wide air dam and deep enclosures for the fog lamps add their own drama to the look.

There is a link to all the Prius’ in this car’s silhouette but Toyota’s design has clearly not held back with styling as they did in the past. The prominent ridge that originates at the rear doors continues rearwards and wraps around the car’s tail splitting the rear windshield in the process. The large, protruding, and vertically oriented taillights are a talking point in their own right. Those 15-inch wheels though, just look outright.

Competition
9.0/10

Toyota Prius vs Chevrolet Volt

The 2017 Chevrolet Volt is one of the best alternatives to the Toyota Prius. It offers more power and acceleration speed than the Prius. The Chevy Volt is more expensive than the Prius but still offers some value for money features. In terms of fuel economy, both cars offer the best fuel economy for their fuel capacity. However, the Volt lacks in terms of legroom which is more than sufficient in the Prius.

Toyota Prius vs Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid

The 2017 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid is the best alternative to the Toyota Prius. It surpasses the Prius in almost all factors. It offers a more powerful engine, acceleration power, features, and fuel economy. The Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid is available at sale at a much cheaper price than the Prius, but you get more for what you pay.

Toyota Prius vs Lexus CT 200h

The Lexus CT 200h also offers almost the same features as the Toyota Prius. But the main down point of it is the price factor. It is almost $8,000 more than the Prius. That’s not it, it does not justify its price in terms of performance. It is the slowest contender in this competition. On top of that, the CT 200h’s fuel efficiency is significantly lower than the Prius. But it excels when it comes to interior design and materials.

Final Verdict

The 2017 Toyota Prius is a great car from Toyota with best-in-class engine specifications, stunning exterior, and interior look. But it lacks Apple CarPlay and Android Auto which you can find as a standard feature in most cars. The Prius offers more safety features than any of its competitors like pedestrian detection and lane detection. But if you want a hatchback car with more power, the Chevrolet Volt Hybrid and the Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid are the best options available. The Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid is cheaper than the Prius but offers some best in the class engine, fuel economy features, and comfortable driving and handling experience.
