2017 Toyota Yaris Review

Pros

  • A plethora of basic safety features
  • Good handling
  • Great infotainment system
  • Feature-rich

Cons

  • Congested cabin
  • Underpowered engine
  • Outdated 4-speed automatic transmission

The Nissan is not exactly a looker, The Honda Fit is the fastest but lacks some interior features, the Toyota Yaris is well, slow and will be comfortable.

Overview

The Toyota Yaris is a compact hatchback from the Japanese automaker. The car has space, daily usability, efficiency, all on a compact frame which enables it to be the perfect car for local errands or daily urban commute. The Toyota Yaris comes in a hatchback variant or a sedan in the Toyota Yaris iA. The hatchback Yaris is available either as a 3-door or a 5-door model, in L, LE, and SE trim.

Powering the Yaris hatchback is a 1.5L inline-4 engine that makes 106 horsepower and 103 lb-ft of torque. Options include an aged 4-speed automatic transmission or a 5-speed manual gearbox. The power is sent to the front wheels. The Yaris stands up to competitors in its segments like the Nissan Versa Note, the Ford Fiesta Hatchback, and the Honda Fit.

Pricing and Features
9.0/10

The Yaris comes in 5 trims. A 3-door and a 5-door version are available for both the L and LE variants. The Yaris is a hatchback that has been reasonably priced at just over $15,000 for the base model (L). Both Manual Transmission and Automatic transmission are available with the hatchback, which is great considering most customers will go for the manual transmission over the sluggish automatic gearbox.

We Recommend

The SE version is the top trim for this car, and although it gives you some good features that modern cars must-have, they still come with a price of $2,000 higher than the LE trim. The SE gives you better safety in terms of seats, brakes, and better running headlights. The SE has some features that add to the comfort and convenience of the daily driver.

Engine and Performance
4.9/10

The engine being a 1.5L inline-4 engine means the car is more attuned to efficiency rather than performance. The engine seems well powered for city commute and even a bit of high-revving. Though the motor is classic and quite noisy as expected from inline-4.

There is an option of either a 5-speed manual transmission or a 4-speed automatic gearbox. The automatic transmission is quite disappointing, while the manual gearbox does a better job at getting the most out of the engine.

The Yaris's engine produces 106 HP and a mere 103 lb/ft of torque, which is the least among its rivals, though it means great efficiency. Some of its rivals such as the Honda Fit and the Ford Fiesta come with slightly larger and better-powered engines and a 6-speed and a 5-speed transmission, respectively. Either car seems to be more modernized than the Yaris. The Nissan Versa Note, on the other hand, has a similar output as the Yaris, though it comes with a CVT transmission.

2017 Toyota Yaris Hatchback Acceleration

The 2017 Toyota Yaris takes the longest, a whopping 10 seconds to reach 0-60MPH. The outdated 4-speed gearbox seriously hinders the propulsion of the car. Though the manual transmission can get a pretty responsive output from the setup. Nevertheless in any configuration, the Toyota Yaris hatchback is not much of a driver’s car.

The Ford Fiesta takes 9.7 seconds and the winner at just 8.2 seconds is the Honda Fit. The high revving engine in the Honda Fit is the best car at speeding up. Even the sluggish CVT on the Nissan Versa Note is faster than the automatic gearbox of the Toyota Yaris. When comparing the quarter-mile timings, again Honda Fit leads the race with 16.0 seconds.

2017 Toyota Yaris hatchback Handling and Ride

The 2017 Yaris hatchback does not have the driving experience that its more modern and refined rivals offer. The small engine with the automatic transmission is exceptionally sluggish and noisy. With the 5-speed transmission, however, the engine can be pushed to deliver an agile output.

Toyota implements a technology known as Tilt steering that amplifies the driver’s inputs for the dynamic movement of the car. Though in the case of the Toyota Yaris, it hampers the drivability. The sedan Yaris iA is much better and quicker around corners, though the hatchback suffers and seems to lean quite heavily into turns. Overall in both ride quality and handling the Yaris is lacking.

2017 Toyota Yaris Hatchback Braking

While all 4 wheels have the ABS technology as standard, the brake response itself is well made and highly durable. The SE variant comes with better brakes, which can improve the response to a small degree. The stopping distance from 60-0 MPH is 127 feet, which is just about acceptable for its light and compact hatchback. Even though the Yaris has the lightest body in the segment, it still takes quite long to come to a halt.

Surprisingly, the Honda Fit has the smallest brake rotors on either axle amongst the competitors, and even then it manages to stop the quickest amongst the lot. The Ford Fiesta hatchback has the largest brakes on the front axle, though its heavy weight makes it come to a stop in the slowest 129 feet.

Fuel Economy
8.3/10

The Yaris is an efficient and compact little hatchback. Though in terms of fuel economy, the car is rather lacking as compared to its competitors. The Toyota cannot compete with its sibling the Prius C, which has close to 50 mpg. The 4-speed automatic gets 30 mpg in cities, 35 mpg on highways, and 32 mpg combined. While with the manual gearbox, these figures change to 30 mpg on urban roads, 36 on the highway and 33 mpg combined.

The fuel efficiency figures on the Yaris are not outstanding. The Nissan Versa Note offers the best economy at 39 mpg on highways and a combined efficiency of 34 mpg. The Honda Fit also performs better with its automatic gearbox with 32 mpg combined. The only hatchback behind Yaris is the Fiesta with a combined mileage of 30 mpg.

Interior
6.0/10

The 2017 Toyota Yaris can seat 5 people, though the middle passenger on the rear bench will feel a bit congested. The seats are upscale and supportive. The interiors have soft plastics and are generally well outfitted.

Although compared to most of its competitors, the interiors in the 2017 Toyota Yaris do not offer anything outstanding. The rear seats have surprisingly well-designed legroom, though the headroom can seem a bit congested.

The front and back seats have a lot of seating space adequate for children and adults alike. However, on longer trips, the seats do get to you and might feel a bit uncomfortable. The cabin is otherwise suitable for a city commuter. The Nissan Versa Note and the Honda Fit offer considerable legroom in their rear benches, which is much better than the class standard. The Ford Fiesta hatchback on the other hand offers the least space. Some standout features in the interior are:

  • 6-Way Manual Driver Seat.
  • 4-Way Manual Passenger Seat.
  • Manual Tilt Steering Column.
  • Front and Rear Cupholders.
  • Manual Air Conditioning.
  • Front Map Lights.
  • Power Door Locks.
  • Fabric Seats.
  • Air Filter.

2017 Toyota Yaris Hatchback infotainment

It comes with a 6.1-inch screen, which is quite well designed and easy to use. The system has a plethora of features and even includes a comprehensive service schedule to maintain the car. The system includes Bluetooth compatibility and some other features to complement the interiors. Some of its standout features include:

  • AM/FM
  • CD player
  • MP3 player
  • USB Input
  • Bluetooth Capability

2017 Toyota Yaris hatchback cargo space Cargo

The Yaris can accommodate up to 15.6 cubic feet of luggage. It is not the biggest boot but it is quite well outfitted for daily use. The boot is a simple space, it also includes the spare tire for the car, and in most cases will satisfy your requirements. The overall cargo space of Yaris with rear row seats down is not available for comparison.

The Versa Note offers the best space in the segment when the rear row is up, which is a cavernous 18.8 cubic feet. The Honda Fit offers the best space when the rear seats are folded down. Lastly, the Ford Fiesta hatchback offers the least storage space in the segment of 14.9 cubic feet.

Exterior
6.1/10

The car's exterior is sporty, with a redesigned front fascia and an X-shaped grille. The car is available in either a 3 door variant or a 5 door one. The 3 door variant looks better and more in proportion and would be the recommended option in case you don't generally ferry people around. Either configuration offers the same space in the cabin.

The car looks well proportioned and rather appealing from the outside. The higher trim levels include black accents and stylized headlamps to push the looks of the hatchback further.

The Nissan Versa Note has the longest wheelbase in the segment, by quite a margin. The Ford Fiesta has the widest profile. The Toyota Yaris hatchback is the lightest car in the competition, which makes it agile and does help the fuel economy. Some standout exterior features in the car are:

  • Body Color Bumper
  • Body Color Door Handles
  • Daytime running lights
  • Body-Colored Exterior mirror
  • Front Fog Lamps
  • 16-inch alloy wheels

Safety
9.3/10

NHTSA has granted the Toyota Yaris a 4-star overall score. The IIHS also finds the car lacking and gives it a Marginal rating in the Small Front Overlap. The Yaris does not come standard with a rear-view camera. Though the car still receives some of the most modern safety features like other Toyota cars this year. These include Automatic Emergency Braking, Forward Collision Warning, Lane Departure Alert, and Automatic high beam headlights. Some standout safety features in the 2017 Toyota Yaris hatchback are:

  • Brakes-ABS
  • Automatic Emergency braking
  • Forward Collision Warning
  • Lane Departure Alert
  • Automatic high-beam headlamps
  • Traction Control
  • Rollover Protection Bars

Competition
9.0/10

Ford Fiesta vs Toyota Yaris hatchback

The Ford fiesta is what comes to mind when one thinks about a hatchback. But compared to Asian automotive giants, the Ford Hatchback is truly lacking. The Fiesta is one of the best selling cars by the American automaker. Though the engine and the response are more modern, the car offers a more compact cabin, and also lacks fuel economy. Even though it is equally priced, we would pick the Ford Fiesta in this competition, owing to the aged feel of the Yaris’s setup.

Honda Fit vs Toyota Yaris hatchback

The classic high revving Honda motor with a noiseless refinement is what pushes the car in terms of performance. The 2017 Honda Fit is the best car in the competition in terms of engine response. The Honda has been outfitted with ample space both in the cabin as well as in the boot, which makes it quite a convincing deal. The car is modern, well-styled, and feature-rich. All of these attributes make it a much better package than the Toyota Yaris hatchback.

Nissan Versa Note SV vs Toyota Yaris hatchback

It should be noted that the Nissan Versa has more legroom than the Mercedes Benz E-class Sedan. While that is a convenience, and it comes at almost the same price as its rivals. The car lacks exterior styling and even engine response. It also doesn't offer a manual gearbox. Though the CVT is particularly brilliant at ensuring mileage and efficiency. Overall the Nissan Versa Note is also a better pick as compared to the Toyota Yaris hatchback.

Final Verdict

The Yaris Hatchback has been offered by Toyota for 5 years now. It has a well designed and stylish exterior, while the reliability and maintenance cost of a Toyota is sure to be quite low. On the other hand, the car lacks engine performance and driveability, which most of its competitors offer in boatloads. The interiors are spacious though they aren't outstanding, and the overall fit and finish is also a bit on the lacking side. As the car is now, the 2017 Toyota Yaris hatchback is worth a skip.
