The 2018 Audi A5 Coupe is powered by a 2.0 liter turbocharged inline-4 that produces 252 hp and 273lb-ft of torque. The engine is paired to a 7-speed automatic transmission that directs all the power to all the wheels, which is done with the famous Audi Quattro drivetrain. There is a transmission option to get a 6-speed manual as well, which is available at no extra charge, which is a much more engaging option.

In performance tests, the Audi A5 Coupe does the 0-60 mph sprint in 5.1 seconds and the standing quarter-mile in 13.7 seconds. These are good numbers considering the engine is meant for daily driving rather than performance driving, but the manual transmission might take a millisecond or two more to get to 60 mph, but it will put a smile on your face every time you put your foot down. All trims of the A5 coupe have the same engine and performance figures.

The most powerful of the above is the Cadillac ATS Coupe, which makes 272 hp. Following this is the Audi A5 coupe, which makes 252 hp, the BMW 430i with 248 hp, and the least powerful is the Mercedes-Benz C300 by offering 241 hp. In the performance test, the Audi A5 does the 0 to 60 mph sprint and the standing quarter-mile the fastest, setting a time of 5.1 seconds and 13.7 seconds, respectively. Following this is the BMW 430i, Cadillac ATS, and the Mercedes-Benz C300.

The 2018 Audi A5 coupe offers 24 mpg in the city, 34 mpg on the highway, and a combined mpg of 27 mpg. This is achieved in its stock configuration, which features an automatic transmission. When the car is equipped with a manual transmission, the mpg figures change slightly with 24/33 mpg in the city/highway, respectively. 

Audi equips the A5 coupe with a 15.3-gallon fuel tank. This allows the A5 coupe with an automatic transmission to have a range of 367 miles in the city, 520 miles on the highway, and combined mileage of 413 miles. When the A5 comes with a manual transmission, the range changes to 367 miles in the city and 505 miles on the highway.

The Audi A5 Coupe and the BMW 430i Coupe offer the most combined mpg of 27. Following this is the Mercedes-Benz C300 and the Cadillac ATS Coupe, both offering a combined mpg of 25. With the difference in the fuel capacity of the above coupes, the most combined range is offered by the Mercedes-Benz C 300 (435 miles). This is followed by the BMW 430i (426 miles), Audi A5 (413 miles), and then the Cadillac ATS (400 miles).

The interior of the 2018 Audi A5 coupe features sharp lines and is an evolution of the previous generation. The coupe interior comfortably seats 4 passengers, however, the rear seats might feel a bit cramped in, but is perfect for teenagers and children. As this is a two-door coupe, the seats are 8-way power bucket seats with the power rear easy-entry feature for the rear seat passengers (if any).

Leather upholstery is standard across all trims, and as you go higher up in trims, there are color options to choose from. Soft-touch materials are everywhere with leather-wrapped steering wheel and leatherette door insets. The steering wheel is manually adjustable. The glove box is illuminated.

The trunk space offered is 11.6 cu-ft, which can be accessed with remote trunk release. For more cargo storage, the rear seats do fold down in a 40/20/40 configuration. 

In terms of legroom, the BMW 430i offers the most in the front and the rear. This is followed by the Cadillac ATS, Mercedes-Benz C300, which is marginally ahead of the Audi A5. The BMW 430i also provides the most amount of trunk space, measuring 15.3 cu.ft. The next largest is the Audi A5 coupe with 11.6 cu.ft. The Audi A5 Coupe gets a 7-inch touchscreen for all entertainment purposes. This can be upgraded into an 8.3-inch touchscreen. Both the touchscreen can be controlled with the help of a rotary controller as well. From this screen, you can access all there is to offer in terms of keeping yourself entertained throughout any journey you have to undertake.

One can choose the options to get 19” wheels and select their finish in gray or black accents adding to the sporty looks and is very handsome too.

Audi still offers the standard set of paint finishes, one will easily be able to find their paint in that or get one from Audi’s external paint options (but, they cost a lot too). By standard, the A5 coupe will come with a Chrome grille. There is the option to get black accents on the car as well, which will account for a small charge but will add to the all-black look. Front Fog lamps and daytime LED lights that are tilted toward the grill enhance the sporty look while keeping it elegant. 

In terms of dimensions, all the above two-door coupe’s are of similar dimensions with marginal differences between them. However, when it comes to curb weight of the A5 Coupe, it is the lightest of the above vehicles, weighing in at 3,549 pounds. The heaviest on the block stands Mercedes with 3,759 lbs of curb weight.

The NHTSA has not yet tested the 2018 Audi A5 coupe. However, it has tested the Audi A5 Sportback, which scored an overall score of 5 stars out of a possible 5-stars. The IIHS has tested the 2018 Audi A5 Coupe and has “Good” and “Superior” in all sections except for headlights, where it has “Marginal”/“Poor” based on trim. The IIHS has also awarded the 2018 Audi A5 Coupe with the “Top Safety Pick” award in the midsize luxury car/2-door coupe segment. Audi has installed a lot of safety features in the Coupe, and as you go higher up in the trim levels, more driver assistance features become stock installations. Some of the safety features are:

Compared to the Mercedes-Benz C300, the Audi A5 has better performance and comes with the famed Quattro system. It also has more trunk space and rear legroom than the Mercedes-Benz C300. The tech makes the Audi A5 a much better option as no other company provides as much tech in a car like Audi, making it the winner of this battle.

Audi A5 vs the Cadillac ATS Coupe

Even with more power, the Cadillac ATS coupe does not match the performance of the Audi A5. However, being a Cadillac, it is still cheaper than the Audi by nearly $6,000. The A5 also has a bigger trunk than the Cadillac and better and good driving dynamics. Even with the bigger price tag, the Audi is a preference for us. 

The Audi A5 Coupe has always been an elegant looking car, and for 2018, the model has added a bit more power, and its improvement shows in the performance tests where it came ahead of its rivals. The interior is top-notch as Audi usually offers and comes with a wide range of options on the interior and exterior front to suit your personal tastes. All and all, this is a definite class leader in the 2-door coupe segment.
