2018 BMW M4 Review

The 2018 BMW M4 is equipped with a 3.0L Twin-Turbo engine which can churn out 425hp of power and 406lb-ft of torque.

BMW M-badged vehicles have always been a purist's delight owing to their sheer driving experience and exhilarating performance at a premium price. The BMW M4 is the performance variant of the BMW 4 Series and it now comes with a mild refresh for this year that includes a mild weight reduction and a stiffer chassis than its predecessor. The M4 has replaced the fabulous BMW M3, which also used to come in two variants i.e., Coupe and Convertible. The prices of the 2018 BMW M4 range start from $68,700 and goes all the way up to $77,200. Both body styles use a 3.0L I-6 TwinPower Turbo engine, which churns out a power output of 425 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque, offering a memorable performance.

Pricing and Features
8.0/10

The BMW M4 is offered only in one trim and comes loaded with all the possible features you look out for in a sporty yet luxurious coupe. Some of the standard features which come with the M4 Coupe are electronically controlled rear differential, dual-zone automatic climate control, an 8.8-inch display screen with BMW’s iDrive infotainment interface, and a 16-speaker Harman Kardon surround system among other features. Apart from the above-mentioned features, there are two add-on packages on offer- Executive Package ($2,100), Competition Package ($4,750). The former offers a few useful features like a Heads-up display, etc, while the latter adds more power and performance.

We Recommend

The M4 Coupe is offered in a single trim only. There are two optional packages available. The Competition package dials the fun factor up to eleven. Most importantly, it increases the engine power output to 444 horsepower that comes along with a set of carbon-ceramic brakes. The Executive package could be skipped unless you need the extra luxury.

Engine and Performance
9.1/10

The moment we hear a BMW vehicle is getting the M treatment, we become absolutely sure that it will bring a lot of excitement to the table, especially on the performance front. Likewise, the 2018 M4 comes with a 3.0-Liter 6-Cylinder Twin Turbo Engine that is capable of churning out a healthy 425 horsepower. With the Competition package, this number shoots up to 444 horsepower, and the CS package further adds 10 hp more, taking the output to 454 horsepower, which is more than adequate for a Coupe of M4's footprint.

The engine is mated either to a 6-Speed Manual or 7-speed automatic transmission system based on your preference. The manual box offers endless fun and also comes equipped with a rev-matching function. The 7-speed dual-clutch automatic box offers lightning-quick shifts and offers a "Smokey Burnout" mode that can satisfy those who love to smoke tires rather than a cigar.

All of the rivals of the M4 come in the almost same price range as there is just a difference of $5,000 between the most expensive one and the cheapest one, where the Audi RS 5 is on the top and the Cadillac ATS-V is at the bottom. The Mercedes-Benz AMG C 63 is the most powerful one on the list and offers a better value for money option with its power for the price ratio. The Cadillac ATS-V is not a slouch either with its twin-turbo V6 motor and a power output of 464 horsepower.

Acceleration

If you own a BMW M-badged vehicle, chances are that you'll probably end up going flat-out the moment you see an opportunity, and the German auto giant has taken care of it very well. The BMW M4 takes flat 4 seconds to reach a speed of 60 mph from a standstill position and only 12.2 seconds to cover a quarter-mile. The manual transmission will give you the thrills of driving, while the 7-speed automatic will provide you with some serious acceleration.

The quickest to reach 60 MPH from a standstill is the Audi RS 5, with a difference of 0.3 seconds from the slowest i.e., BMW M4. But in a quarter-mile race, Mercedes Benz AMG C 63 takes on the lead with a difference of 1.6 seconds from the Audi RS 5. Also, the RS 5 is the most eco-friendly car among the rivals, whereas the bigger engine of the C 63 shows its presence as it is the least eco-friendly on the block.

Steering and Handling

Excellent ride and handling have been one of the USPs of every BMW vehicle even to this day. Furthermore, the M badged vehicles ups the ante in the handling aspect with the addition of performance bits. The 2018 M4 drives a lot like a true sports car with sharp handling, potent acceleration, and quick stopping prowess. The steering is well-weighted and precise but lacks the feel and feedback that one would expect from a vehicle of this stature.

Despite that, you'll love throwing the car around the corners, and it'll stick to the tarmac at all times. The M4 can even pull an impressive .98g while cornering. When you decide to drive it in the city, the car will behave properly without any fuss, and you'll hardly find anything to complain about.

Braking

Braking becomes more important when you have the option of going past the 60 mph mark behind the steering wheel in just 4 seconds, and BMW has taken care of that. Braking is quite exceptional in the 2018 M4. The brake pedal is firm and quite responsive, while the optional carbon-ceramic discs provide excellent stopping power. The 15 and 14.6 inches of discs at the front and rear respectively bite down hard and make the car halt from 60 mph under 104 feet.

Although BMW M4 got the least curb weight in the class, it covers maximum distance before stopping at a speed of 60 mph. The Mercedes-Benz AMG C 63 is the heaviest vehicle among the rivals and offers a stopping distance of 103 ft. The car with the best brakes is Cadillac ATS-V which stops the car in just 101 ft. With 3,990 lbs of curb weight over its shoulders, the RS 5 takes 104 ft to reach a halt, which is the same as BMW.

Fuel Economy
7.1/10

The performance-focused vehicles were never meant to deliver excellent fuel efficiency, and the BMW M4 is just another example proving the same. The coupe has a fuel tank capacity of 15.9 gallons and offers a fuel economy of 17 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway, which combines to form the fuel economy of 20 mpg. M4 stands second in the list of most fuel-efficient cars. With 15.8 gallons of fuel tank capacity, the coupe goes on to provide a highway range of 395 miles.

The Audi RS 5 is the most fuel-efficient car, which offers a combined fuel economy of 21 mpg. The least fuel-efficient car in the list ties in between Cadillac ATS-V and Mercedes-Benz AMG C 63 while the M4 sits in the middle. The AMG C 63 delivers a decent rating considering the performance it is capable of putting out. Its fuel tank of capacity of 17.4 is the best in the segment which helps it achieve the best range in both city and highway conditions.

Interior
7.7/10

BMW has made sure that you can ace those sharp corners like a pro while being seated in absolute comfort inside the 2018 M4 coupe. The interior bits are well fitted, and all the features are easily accessible. The interior is finished with high-quality materials, and the seats are covered in a combination of leather and cloth upholstery. The choice of material for the seat upholstery is a bit unusual, but it works brilliantly by providing excellent comfort to the driver and the front passenger.

The rear seats are ideal for kids and doable for adults over short trips. With a passenger capacity of four, M4 offers very good seating comfort in the class. Due to its sporty nature, the company has offered great features for the seats like driver-seat memory settings, fold-down rear seatbacks, and power front sport seats with heating.

When compared with the rivals, BMW M4 stands to be the most comfortable car in the class. It gives the best space for both front and rear seats. Audi RS 5 is the only rival that can compete with BMW M4. Cadillac ATS-V is the tightest car among the rivals as it provides the least space for front and rear seats. All the coupes in the competition come with a seating capacity of 4, which is the segment standard.

Major interior features of BMW M4 are-

  • Keyless ignition and entry
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Leather Upholstery
  • Power Front Sport-Seats with heating
  • Driver-seat memory setting and fold-down rear seatbacks
  • 16-Speaker Harman Kardon surround-sound audio system

Infotainment

BMW is known to provide an excellent infotainment system in all of its vehicles. The system is known as iDrive and it incorporates an intuitive infotainment interface with a host of features and convenience. The M4 gets the very same system and is extremely practical and offers a seamless user experience.

The system comes with a 6.5-inch screen (8.8-inches display screen optional) with a host of features. The main features of the system are listed below:

  • Navigation system
  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • HD radio
  • satellite radio
  • USB audio unit
  • CD player

Cargo/Trunk Volume

Performance coupes generally do not come with much practicality in terms of storage capacity, and that is the case with the BMW M4 too. But it has enough capacity to hold medium-sized luggage for 4 passengers. Since the rear seats are not much suitable for adults, and you don't have kids to travel with, the capacity can be further increased by folding the rear seats to accommodate bigger things such as gold clubs.

Model BMW M4 Coupe Cadillac ATS-V Coupe Audi RS 5 Coupe Mercedes-Benz AMG C 63
Volume (ft cube) 11.0 10.4 16.4 10.5

Only Audi RS 5 offers a practical and usable boot space that is complemented by its hatch-style boot lid that opens wide and high to make the boot fully accessible. It offers 16.4 cu-ft of space to carry your luggage. The Cadillac ATS-V and the Mercedes-Benz AMG C 63 have a small trunk of an identical capacity of around 10.5 cubic feet, making their practicality limited.

Exterior
9.1/10

The M4 exterior comes with a mix of aggressive and executive design language that makes it a perfect daily driver and a track companion as well. Various lines are going from the front sides to the back, giving the coupe an attractive look. The car has a curb weight of 3,565 lbs and is 184.5 inches long and 73.6 inches wide with side mirrors open. It got a height of 54.4 inches.

It has a ground clearance of 4.8 inches which helps it to run smoother. Trackwidth is 62.2 inches and 63.1 inches in front and rear respectively and wheelbase is 110.7 inches provides good rear space for the passengers.

When compared with the rivals, the Mercedes-Benz AMG C63 is the tallest car in the class and offers minimum ground clearance with a curb weight of 4,074 lbs, which is the most among the rivals. The Cadillac ATS-V is the most balanced car with a weight distribution of 51%-49% in Front-Rear. The Audi RS 5 bears the most aggressive-looking front fascia among the competition. When it comes to the ground clearance,  Cadillac stands the highest at 4.9 inches. Few key exterior highlights of the coupe are-

  • Adaptive Sport Tuned Suspension
  • Electronically Controlled Rear Differential
  • Sport Exhaust with Black Chrome Tailpipes (Optional)
  • 20" Star-Spoke Wheels (Optional)

Safety
9.0/10

BMW provides one of the best safety features in the market along with the traditional superior build quality of its vehicles. The M4 coupe, being a performance-oriented vehicle, comes with all the necessary active and passive safety aids to offer ultimate peace of mind. Unfortunately, the M4 has not been tested by the NHTSA or the IIHS as of now. Some of the standard features that are available with the M4 are given below:

  • Driver's and passenger's front airbag supplemental restraint system (SRS) with advanced technology
  • Active Knee Protection
  • Front-seat side-impact airbags
  • Front safety belts with automatic pre-tensioners
  • Acoustic safety-belt warning
  • LATCH attachment for child-restraint safety installation
  • Automatic-locking retractors (ALR) on all passenger-seat safety belts (for installation of child-restraint seats)
  • Adaptive Brakelights
  • Programmable LED Daytime Running Lights

Competition
9.0/10

2018 BMW M4 Coupe vs. Cadillac ATS-V Coupe

The first noticeable point is the price difference of around $4,000 (Cadillac has a lower price). Cadillac ATS-V has got a bigger engine and produces more power and torque than BMW. It also has better acceleration than the BMW but is also less fuel-efficient. Both have almost the same exterior dimensions but the BMW leads the Cadillac in cargo space.

If we have to choose between the two, the choice would be tricky but Cadillac offers better value for money and therefore is the preferred choice.

2018 BMW M4 Coupe vs. Audi RS 5 Coupe

Audi RS 5 is clearly more exciting than BMW M4. Although it is more expensive than the latter, it is better in almost all the mechanical departments. It offers better power and torque, better acceleration, and even more fuel efficiency. Audi takes the leads in terms of cargo volume too. The choice between the two doesn't come as a surprise since the domination of Audi over BMW is clearly all over the place. Thus, we will recommend Audi between the two.

2018 BMW M4 Coupe vs. Mercedes-Benz AMG C 63

The Mercedes isn't as economical as the BMW but offers better power and torque. It is slightly above the BMW in fuel economy and braking. Although being the heaviest in the class, it offers almost the same trunk volume as the BMW M4. When it comes to luxury inside the cabin, one has to be out-and-out a luxury to beat what Mercedes generally offers, thus Mercedes-Benz AMG C 63 is our preferred choice between the two Germans.

Final Verdict

The 2018 BMW M4 is still one of its kind, thanks to the neck-snapping performance-oriented package at a decent price tag. Although with decent mechanical specifications, the car covers up its drawbacks when it comes to interior features. It offers some of the best features in the cabin, which can comfort the driver as well as the passengers. As there are only two doors in the car, it gives a sporty appeal to the car from the outside. If you're looking for a handsome and fairly practical performance coupe, then the M4 is the one to go for, however, if you desire more performance at a similar price, then we would recommend you to go for the Mercedes-Benz AMG C 63.
