Overall Rating
The new 2018 BMW X5 offers a variety of different models intended to satisfy a wide range of luxury SUV buyers.
The 2018 BMW X5 is a mid-size premium crossover SUV that is just beautiful in every aspect. According to BMW, the 2018 X5 is going to be the last model year for the third generation. The X5 symbolizes luxury and comfort in a stylish manner. There are two engine options for the X5. A 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine that makes 300 horsepower powers the entry-level sDrive35i and xDrive35i.
All the models are nicely-equipped with a good amount of features. But we would recommend you to go ahead with the 35i as it packs an energetic engine and the car is not much expensive too. There are good levels of luxury and even the base trim is eligible for all the premium packages too.

All the models are nicely equipped with a good amount of features. But we would recommend you to go ahead with the 35i as it packs an energetic engine and the car is not much expensive too. There are good levels of luxury and even the base trim is eligible for all the premium packages too.
The entry-level sDrive35i and xDrive35i is powered by a 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine. This X5's engine churns out 300 horses of power and 300 pound-feet of torque. This engine feels more refined and energetic but the real game-changer is the 4.4-liter turbocharged V8 engine that makes 445 horsepower and 480 pound-feet of torque. Both these use an eight-speed automatic transmission to transmit the power. The gearbox in this car is as sharp as a sting of a bee. Performance is available in absolute bucket loads.
The X5 can’t keep up to some rivals off-road but honestly, most buyers won't stray that far from the tarmac and that’s lucky because on-road the BMW X5 really defies its size. There’s a lot of grip at the front end meaning you can turn in sharply and it keeps its bulk in check remarkably well. The best part about driving the X5 is the steering feedback and it completely belies its size. It's worth spending extra on BMW’s adaptive suspension because it gives you a supplier ride most of the time. Essentially, it allows you to stiffen or soften the dampers by selecting different modes as the road surface changes.

The powerful Audi Q7 competes vigorously to climb to the top position on the table while the Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class and the Jaguar F-Pace wail at the tail of the Q7 with just one second behind. The BMW X5 is the slowest of all in this segment. It takes 6 seconds to reach 60 mph while the quarter-mile run is completed in 14.6 seconds.
The 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine is one of the best engines in this segment in terms of fuel economy. The BMW X5 sDrive35i returns 18 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on a highway in its rear-wheel-drive configuration while the available all-wheel-drive configuration fuel estimates come out to be 18 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on a highway.
There isn’t much difference if an all-wheel-drive system is employed. The top-end xDrive50i has the thirstiest V8 engine. The EPA estimates include 15 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on a highway. The X5 comes fitted with a fuel tank capacity of 22.4 gallons which is able to deliver a range of 481 miles in mixed proportions.

The Jaguar F-Pace is the star here with its amazing fuel economy although it houses a small 15.9-gallon fuel tank. The BMW X5 and the Audi Q7 share almost equal fuel estimates but the latter buckles up with a more combined range. The most fuel-sipping vehicle in this segment is the Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class and its large 24.6-gallon fuel tank is of no use.
There is seating for five passengers and the optional third-row seat increases capacity to seven. As soon as you step inside the cabin of the X5, you will realize what a striking cabin this car has got. In terms of design language, some of its rivals have caught up with the BMW but when it comes to sheer quality, very few can match the overall materials used in the cabin of the X5. The top of the dashboard and top of the door panel uses very soft materials. There’s loads of leather stitching as well and even the lower end of the dashboard, a place where a lot of people don’t pay attention to is solidly put together.Â
Attention to detail is paramount inside the cabin of the new BMW X5. The seats are excellent in terms of cushioning, support, and comfort. You also get small side bolsters which help to keep you fixed in your seats around the corners. The biggest surprise inside the X5’s cabin is the fact that the floor panel is almost flat which makes sitting in the center not much uncomfortable. The headroom is massive even with a panoramic sunroof and the knee room is also adequate. On the cargo note, the X5 comes with 33.9 cubes of trunk volume which is sufficient to go with your family for a long weekend.

The main notable difference in this table is the seven-seater Audi Q7 which is also possible for the BMW X5 by opting for the optional third-row. The headroom offered by the X5 in the front row makes it stress-free for six-footers. The Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class offers the highest cargo capacity in this segment while the X5 and the Jaguar F-Pace don't differ much in their cargo capacities. The Audi Q7 being a seven-seater loses most of the cargo space. Additional interior features of the 2018 BMW X5
The BMW iDrive system is the most intuitive and the easiest system to operate out of all its rivals. Any driver can get accustomed to its interface even though they are first time users. The X5 gets a 10.2-inch touchscreen display which will help you navigate through all the menus on the BMW iDrive system. The infotainment system features Apple CarPlay, HD radio, and Bluetooth streaming.
The top-tier xDrive50i is also available with the option of a rear-seat entertainment system. You get dual 9.2-inch screens to keep the rear passengers entertained. This BMW comes standard with a nine-speaker Harman Kardon sound system but the optional 20-speaker Bang and Olufsen premium audio systems are only reserved for audiophiles. Additional infotainment features of the 2018 BMW X5
The SUV universe is significant in dimension and size, and in particular in the United States, because Americans love large vehicles and there is no doubt about that Up front, the X5 gets the signature kidney-shaped grille. This grille has a sleek appearance than the rest of the car. Details like rugged arches of the wheel maintain the sporty look of the X5. As far as the headlights, the X5 gets standard LED adaptive headlights.
However, you can get some laser headlights if you want some kind of a fancier-looking arrangement. Also, fog lamps are standard on every single model. The whole body of the X5 is mounted on 19-inch alloy wheels. There are a series of optional designs for 20 inches, 21 inches, and 22 inches ranging from silver to fully blacked-out design. BMW keeps the mirrors nice, simple, and fully loaded.

From the side profile, you may notice black molding on all of the bumpers to make it look rugged. Around to the rear, the X5 boasts a very handsome-looking rear design, especially for an SUV. LED tail lamps and dual exhaust pipes feature the rear part of the X5.
The 2018 BMW X5 received a solid five stars from NHTSA for its astounding safety results. IIHS did rate the X5 but only for front and side crash tests but it managed to score ‘Good’ ratings. Six airbags are installed in the X5 including dual front, side curtain, and front side airbags. As for driver-assist systems, this is where BMW excels because it offers the world’s top and best driver-assist systems. Some of the safety features of the 2018 BMW X5 include:
The basic difference starts with the engine. The Audi Q7 is powered by a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 engine whereas the BMW X5 gets a 3.0-liter naturally aspirated six-cylinder engine. Adding a turbo adds an extra 33 horsepower to the Q7 and simultaneously performs better in the acceleration and drag tests.
BMW loses some points when it comes to seating because it can manage to seat up to five individuals only. In terms of styling and luxury, both cars boast superior levels.
The Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class is exactly $5,000 cheaper than the BMW X5. That’s a huge winning point for Mercedes. Both the cars have similar engine outputs and performance figures but things change when it comes to fuel economy.
The X5 takes a forward leap here but the GLE-Class keeps the competition hot by offering the highest cargo capacity in this competition. In short, if you cannot afford a BMW, get a Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class.
Like the GLE-Class, the Jaguar F-Pace is almost $5,000 but it sacrifices power and torque figures. In terms of performance, the F-Pace is faster than the X5 and that’s not just it. It is the most fuel-efficient SUV in this segment.
BMW’s iDrive infotainment system lags sometimes compared to Jaguar. When it comes to creature comforts, both the cars are excellent. If you are looking for something other than the German players then take a look at the Jaguar F-Pace.
The 2018 BMW X5 is the best choice for keen drivers in this segment. The X5 has two energetic engine options and both of them are well-designed to give you the ultimate performance. Handling is absolutely sublime while turning into those sharp corners is a rewarding experience. In terms of responsiveness and agility, the X5 is still the SUV to beat in this segment. It is the top of its class in all the dynamic departments when it comes to clean driving. It also offers you a comfortable cabin along with a long list of features. If you are someone who enjoys keen driving more than anything else, then the BMW X5 is your only choice in the premium luxury SUV space.
