About 2018 Chevrolet Corvette Z06

3.6

Overall Rating

The 2018 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 starts at just $79,495 for the base 1LZ variant and packs a lot of equipment with it and many options as well. The Star of the Show has undoubtedly got to be the Brilliant 6.2L Engine that delivers a massive 650HP and 650lbs-ft of Torque with Active Fuel management propelling the Car to 60MPH in around 3 seconds.

The face of GM Worldwide, the Chevrolet Corvette Z06 has been introduced with some changes for its 2018 iteration and looks to take forward the legacy left behind by the 6th Generation Corvette. The 2018 Flagship Corvette Z06 starts at $79,495(no optional extras added base 1LZ variant) and goes over $100,000 depending on the variant, trim and optional extras added. On the specifications part, powering the 2018 Corvette is a Supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 engine that generates a monstrous 650 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque with an ability to reach speeds of over 190 MPH.

The Corvettes have always been the most popular Sports Car for people who look for breathtaking performance without paying “Exospheric” levels of money. The 7th Generation Corvette was important for GM not just because of the brand value it possessed but also because it acted as the “Face of America” to the entire world. And boy did GM nail it. With the 7th generation of the Corvette, GM redefined the word “Price to Performance” and created a segment benchmark.

The New Corvette has been developed in tandem with the C7.R race car by taking inputs from its runs at the haloed Nurburgring Track to tame both corners and straight lines. The Corvette has come a long way from its humble beginnings back in 1953 and is currently in its seventh generation. The performance car segment is not an easy place to coexist in and the Chevrolet Corvette Z06 competes with the Jaguar F-Type 400 Sport, the Mercedes AMG GT-Coupe, and the Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe.

The 2LZ trim packs in some good convenience features that will help you ease your way home from the nearest race track. It adds to the practicality aspect of the track-bred sportscar, with features like LTE Wi-Fi enabled Infotainment, Ventilated Seats, and a Premium Audio System. Hence, that's the trim to go for.

Engine and Performance
9.5/10

The Corvette, throughout its history, was famed for its Engine and Power. With the current generation of the Corvette, the engineers of Chevrolet at Detroit have refined the 6.2-liter V-8 Supercharged motor to even higher levels to create a breathtaking driving experience. The Motor still has the dry-sump lubrication and pushrods (which allows the Supercharger to be placed in the valley of the cylinder heads with 4 cylinders on each side of the valley) however, the engine itself has plenty of modern technology like the aluminum block of the engine and cylinder heads with forged connecting rods and pistons which have been re-engineered to give the LT4 engine a compression ratio of 10:1.

The Engine also comes with Titanium Intake Valves and Continuous Variable Valve Timing for controlling the valves of the Camshafts in the engine as per the demand from the User. The Intercooled Supercharger now spools at 20,000RPM which earlier used to rotate at 15,000RPM. The power output of this LT4 motor is rated at a Class Leading 650 horsepower at 6,400RPM and 650 pound-feet of torque at 3,600rpm. Transmission duties are handled by a familiar 7 Speed Manual Transmission with Rev Matching Feature and an all-new 8-speed Torque Converter Automatic Transmission available as an option, making its debut for the first time in the Z06.

Both the Hydraulically Assisted Clutch and the Flywheel are lightweight and are specific to the Z06 trim and channel the power to the rear wheels. Transmission is quick and slick in both iterations however, we feel that the Automatic does a better job in shifting gears with the Manual being the one that is more engaging to drive. This Automatic also has created new segment benchmarks by being the Fastest Automatic Shifting Gearbox even beating the famed Dual Clutch PDK (Porsche Doppelkupplungs) gearbox from Porsche.

How quick is the 2018 Chevrolet Corvette Z06?

The acceleration from the mighty 6.2-liter supercharged V-8 is just menacing. Every time you decide to hit the gas pedal to the Floor in first gear, you will always be shoved back deep into the bucket seats of the Corvette with unfathomable force. You will stay in this position unless you reach the fourth gear or decide to pull your foot off the Gas Pedal after realizing that this was not the smartest thing to do.

The 2018 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 can hit the 60 MPH mark from a standstill in just 3.4 seconds and can cross the quarter-mile mark in a blistering 11.2 seconds! Not to forget its amazing top speed of 190 MPH.

How does the 2018 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 handle?

The Handling is mostly stiff in city riding conditions in the 2018 Corvette Z06 as it is a track-focused vehicle. The Electrically Assisted Steering is well-weighted and pretty precise in changing directions. The Available Magnetic Ride Control however smoothens the ride to a great extent by adjusting the damping system in real-time in just 15 milliseconds. The Electronically Controlled Limited-Slip Differential adds to the Cornering ability of the Car and helps the car remain planted at high speeds.

The Standard Front Splitter on the front wheel openings, large vent on the Carbon Fiber hood, and standard spoiler adds to the downforce hence improving the handling of the Car. The Carbon Fiber Aero Package and the Z07 Performance package adds an adjustable wickerbill on the large rear Carbon Fiber spoiler and large aviation-style front Carbon Fiber splitters add to the aerodynamics and improve the overall handling and high-speed stability.

The standard Michelin Pilot Super Sport ZP summer-only tires do provide a good grip on the track and don't offer much tire skid while cornering. The Z07 performance package however adds the Track Proven Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires that provide phenomenal grip while cornering hard or doing high-speed runs.

How good are the brakes on the 2018 Chevrolet Corvette Z06?

Chevrolet has not skipped a thing while tuning and setting the braking for the 2018 Corvette Z06. The standard steel brakes from Brembo do the job well when stopping the car from high speeds. The Carbon Ceramic Brakes available in the Z07 performance package doubles the braking performance and inspires confidence in the drivers, allowing them to take corners even harder and drastically reducing the overall stopping distances.

Fuel Economy
4.8/10

The 2018 Corvette Z06 can come to a stop from 60 MPH in just 99.5 feet. While the optional Carbon Ceramic brakes might not improve the stopping distance drastically, they have the ability to cool down a lot faster and hence, improving the efficiency of the brakes.

Interior
5.7/10

While most Corvette owners won't buy the Corvette for its fuel economy/MPG figures, Chevrolet has added some clever fuel-saving tech that helps the Corvette get respectable MPG figures. GM has reduced the weight of the seventh generation Corvette significantly from its previous iterations by using Aluminum and Carbon Fiber in the design of the Car. This translates to better fuel economy and performance.

You also get Active Fuel Management inside the Corvette Z06 that disengages 4 out of the 8 cylinders when the driver is light on the gas pedal or drives in Eco mode. This bumps up the MPG figures significantly and also reduces the carbon footprint and the emissions figure. The 2018 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 offers a city MPG of 15 miles, highway MPG of 22 miles, and a combined MPG of 18 miles.

How comfortable is the 2018 Chevrolet Corvette Z06?

Talking about the seating, the Corvette can seat two adults with an adequate amount of space without them feeling cramped inside. The seats themselves offer decent levels of comfort and have various levels of adjustability options that allow most drivers to find a comfortable seating position. The seats in the higher trims are heated and ventilated and offer good cushioning as compared to the rivals.

The seats have 8-way power adjustments giving you ample amounts of configurations to make yourself feel comfortable. As far as the cabin is concerned, the driver-focused cabin gives the driver easier access to the controls and functions of the vehicle. The top-end 3LZ trim gets suede-wrapped interior panels which adds a touch of premiumness to it.

The Mercedes offers the most amount of headroom and legroom among the competition. The Jaguar on the other hand has the most amount of shoulder room. Since there are no official cabin dimensions for the Porsche 911 Turbo S, we cannot compare it to the other cars. All the vehicles mentioned above are strictly two-seaters.

How much cargo space does the 2018 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 offers?

For a sports car, the Corvette Z06 offers plenty of cargo space and beats its competitors hands-down. The area under the glass liftgate can house a few duffel bags or even a large roll-aboard suitcase. This is a feat that no other rival in its class can boast about and makes the Corvette feel like a big hatchback in terms of storage space. The interior cabin itself has plenty of storage spaces and cubby holes can be found in almost all sections of the cabin. Not to forget the concealed secret storage hidden behind the infotainment screen that is also passcode protected.

The Chevrolet Corvette Z06 offers the highest cargo space among the competition and is the most practical sports car in this segment. The Jaguar F-Type SVR offers the second-best cargo space of 11 cubic feet. The Porsche 911 Turbo S is certainly not designed for carrying anything more than a few backpacks thanks to its meager 4.1 cubic feet of cargo space.

How intuitive is the 2018 Chevrolet Corvette Z06’s infotainment unit?

Chevrolet has tried to deck the 2018 Corvette Z06 with the best in terms of connectivity it has to offer. It is definitely more feature-packed in terms of its competition and is pretty comprehensive. The Cabin itself is oriented towards the driver while controls are easily reachable for the Driver to fiddle around. The 8-inch MyLink touchscreen display works well and is laid out quite well.

The graphics are good and are legible to take control of even while driving. But it is surely not as seamless as the ones that can be found in its competition. These are some of the distinctive infotainment features:

  • 360 Degree Camera System and Parking Cameras in the Front and Rear
  • Dual Zone Climate Control
  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • 8" MyLink Touchscreen Infotainment System
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Wireless Charging Pad for Compatible Phones
  • 4G LTE WiFi and Hotspot
  • Voice Recognition and Control
  • USB Port behind the retractable infotainment screen
  • 2 USB Ports and 12V Charging socket in the Center Console

Exterior
7.6/10

The 2018 Corvette is in the 5th Year of its current generation(7th generation) and despite this, the design doesn't look dated in any way. Chevrolet has kept adding to the design of the car and has ensured that the coupe looks up to date. There is so much to look at in the exterior of the Corvette that your eyes may need exercise to go through the different elements of the sports car. Starting from the exquisitely sculpted Long Carbon Fiber Hood that makes space for the Supercharger, Swept Windshield and muscular haunches make the car look bold and aggressive.

The Carbon Fiber Spoiler adds to the overall appeal of the car while the HID Projector Headlamps add to the flair of the Corvette. The dimensions of the 2018 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Coupe will immediately remind you of its American heritage. The long bonnet with the supercharger vent, the flared wheels arches, character lines running all across the Car allows the 2018 Corvette to maintain the charm of previous generation Corvettes.

It's no denying the fact that the Corvette is big but it isn't difficult to live with. Modern engineering in the 2018 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 has allowed GM Engineers to shove off a lot of weight from the Corvette hence making the current generation of the Corvette a very light car. There is generous use of Aluminum and Carbon Fiber in the engine, body, and chassis of the Corvette Z06.

Safety
6.0/10

The new Chevrolet Corvette Z06 has not been crash-tested by the NHTSA or the IIHS. But that doesn’t have to concern you as the vehicle is equipped with a good amount of safety features while also flexing a strong build structure. Chevrolet has put a lot of safety equipment in the 2018 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 but we feel that while this is adequate, it is certainly not the best in class. The consumers don't need to be worried about the safety inside the Corvette as it handles most of the emergency or panic situations easily thanks to the tech it offers. Some of the Standard Safety Tech and Features include:

  • Front and Side Driver and Passenger Airbags
  • Anti-Lock Braking System with Traction Control
  • Low Tire Pressure Warning
  • Performance Traction Management System
  • Active Handling System
  • OnStar Communication system that calls emergency services in event of a Collision.

Competition
6.0/10

Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Coupe vs. Jaguar F-Type 400 Sport Coupe

The Jaguar F-Type Coupe is one of the Finest Products to come out of the other side of the Atlantic. Both the Corvette and the F-Type have Superb Exhaust Notes but the Jag has a slight edge due to the Constant Pops and Snarls from the Exhaust of the F-Type.

The Jaguar looks if not better but equally good as the Corvette but the Jaguar has slightly better fit and finishing and this is the same story in the Interiors as well. The Corvette however simply outruns the Jag in terms of Track Performance and extracting the best out of the Car on track with its superb grip levels, amazing Engine and astounding Handling around Corners.

Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Coupe vs. Mercedes AMG-GT Coupe

Mercedes have always been known for creating some of the most amazing Sports Cars in the World. The AMG GT is no different and is a segment benchmark in terms of Design in the Exterior and Interior, Build Quality, Comfort and Technology on offer.

But all these come at a price and that too a steep one. The Corvette on the other hand offers “Truck Loads” of power, Exhilarating Performance and driving pleasure on the Track and is difficult to beat in terms of the Thrill and Experience that it offers.

Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Coupe vs. Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe

The Corvette was always a great Straight Line decimating monster. With the Current generation, the GM engineers wanted to make the Corvette handle if not better than but as good as the Segment Benchmark in terms of Handling-The Porsche 911.

The Porsche despite being underpowered than all its rivals offers Pure Driving Pleasure and any Motoring Enthusiast would choose the Porsche if they were to pick the Best Drivers Car. The Corvette however has improved “Leaps and Bounds” in terms of Handling from its previous generations and with the kind of Power on offer, it certainly is a better value proposition.

Final Verdict

The 2018 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Coupe has again redefined the Term "Bang for Buck". It offers class-leading power and torque. With the Carbon Fiber usage in the body and generous use of Aluminum in the chassis, the Corvette has shed a lot of weight over its previous generations. This has added to its handling and improved its overall driving dynamics. But this Corvette Z06 Coupe has its own flaws.

The build quality still is not close to the levels of what the Germans offer and the safety equipment needs to be bumped up with the kind of performance that this offers. So, if you are on a limited budget and don't want a car with high maintenance costs and set blisteringly quick lap times around the race track near you, the Corvette seems to be the perfect weapon of choice.
