Great Budget car

Pros

Gas Mileage, smooth ride

Cons

Lack of cruise control, lack of built in XM radio

This is a great budget car, does what its supposed to do, but don't expect anything fancy or flashy. One issue is the headlamps are poorly designed. I had to change to LED after changing the bulbs 6 times in 2 years due to the lack of headlight shock absorbers. The slight vibration from driving will kill the halogen bulbs in quick fashion.

Reliable, yet aesthetic car

Pros

Rides smooth, Gas Efficient

Cons

I don’t care for the auto stop on vehicle, There was no spare tire that came with vehicle

I purchased my vehicle Feb 2018 l. My car has been pretty reliable for the most part! Just need to stay on top of the car maintenance. The trunk space is huge in this vehicle. I don't like the auto stop feature on the car at all. The auto stop feature needs to be an option to use or turn off by the driver. But overall This car meets all my families needs. It gets excellent gas mileage.

If you are keen to expand your car-buying budget and looking for a complete standard packaged car, the 2018 Chevrolet Cruze will be the right pick. It is available at a low starting price, enriching standard features, and amazing fuel economy. In the competitive passenger car segment, Chevrolet has tried to maintain the pace with the Chevy Cruze.

Overview

In the competitive passenger car segment, Chevrolet has tried to maintain the pace with its Chevy Cruze. The front-drive compact car, 2018 Chevrolet Cruze is available in both sedan and hatchback body styles. Last year itself, Chevrolet introduced the Cruze hatchback with more cargo space in comparison to the sedan version. The same year, the carmaker offered a new diesel-powered engine in order to improve the fuel economy by 50 mpg on the highway.

The 2018 Chevy Cruze sedan comes in four trims with a starting MSRP of $17,850 while the hatchback is available in two trims. The base Cruze model comes powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder engine mated to a six-speed transmission and FWD. Chevrolet also comes with a turbo-diesel engine for both hatchback and sedan versions, priced from $24,670 to $26,270. This engine is mated to either a six-speed manual or a nine-speed automatic transmission. We will now look into the features, which are responsible for making the 2018 Chevrolet Cruze Sedan relevant in the market.

Buying Advice

The base trim is offered with impressive standard technology including a 7-inch touchscreen, smartphone integration, and a rearview camera. As such it is a great choice for people looking for a good bang for their buck.

For people looking for better creature comforts, Cruze LT offers some convenient controls on the steering wheel and a split-folding rear seat. Chevrolet has also offered different packages with the LT, like heated front seats, an eight-way power-adjustable driver's seat, and a proximity key.

Engine and Performance
7.2/10

The standard engine available with the 2018 Chevy Cruze is the 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine, which is mated to a six-speed manual transmission. The 153-hp engine is quite slower in terms of acceleration comparatively. Additionally, the turbodiesel 1.6-liter engine delivers 137-hp and can be paired with either a six-speed manual or a nine-speed automatic transmission.

The Elantra sedan is the most affordable here at just under 17k. Consequently, it is also the least powerful. The tiny Ford makes a great case for itself, with its peppy and frugal 2-liter engine, followed closely by the Civic. Cruze stands atop with its 177 lb-ft of torque in the segment.

Acceleration and Handling

The base model with the 1.4-liter turbocharged gasoline engine sprints from 0 to 60 mph in 8.1 seconds. The acceleration isn't thrilling and other competitors are doing better in this regard. Although, the suspension system is firm enough to provide a smooth ride over uneven terrain.

Honda Civic manages to stay ahead of the competition here, but not by a significant margin. Hot on its heels is the Elantra, followed by the Cruze, and then the Focus. As for the emissions, subcompact cars always benefit in this area by the virtue of their architecture.

Braking

The 2018 Chevrolet Cruze sedan is believed to have a moderate brake in terms of its response. It reaches 60-0 MPH in 113 feet, which is moderate. The steering feels light and the brakes are powerful. The brake pedal isn't the most confidence-inspiring, but then again, at this price, there aren't many complaints.

The braking distance of the 2018 Cruze is 113 feet. The overall curb weight is 2,932, which is higher than most of its close rivals like the Hyundai Elantra and Honda Civic. The Ford Focus, therefore, is the most responsive vehicle in terms of its braking responses, whereas the Hyundai Elantra stands last.

Fuel Economy
7.8/10

On the fuel economy front, the Cruze is leading the segment. It is believed to offer the highest fuel economy in its class. The most fuel-efficient engine is the new turbodiesel engine that returns 30 mpg in the city and 52 mpg on the highway. With the automatic transmission, the Cruze sedan returns 29 mpg in the city and 40 mpg on the highway.

Mpg (highway) 40 36 40 34
Mpg (combined) 32 29 32 28

Ford Focus is the worst performer in terms of fuel mileage. It manages to offer only 25 mpg in city and 34 mpg on the highway. The Civic amazes with its efficiency figures, even though it offers the best performance here.

Interior
8.0/10

The interiors of the 2018 Chevrolet Cruze sedan feel clean, decent, and quite convenient. The seats are comfortable and nicely cushioned. There is enough cabin space to accommodate five occupants. The sloping roof allows tall passengers to stoops while moving to the rear seat. However, the roofline with chunky side pillars reduces visibility.

There are three tether anchors in the rear seat to attach child safety seats. Lower anchors are present on the outboard seats, and connectors are quite difficult to use on the passenger side as the anchor is very near to the adjoining seat belt.

The Cruze isn't as roomy as the cavernous Civic, but four adults should sit comfortably without feeling claustrophobic. The small cabin means most controls are within the driver's reach, including the large touchscreen. Drivers of varying heights will be able to find an ideal seating position. Some of the main interior features of the 2018 Chevrolet Cruze Sedan are:

  • Cupholders
  • Interior Air Filtration
  • Dual Vanity Mirrors
  • Keyless Ignition
  • Cruise Control
  • Electrical Power Steering

Cargo Space

The 2018 Chevrolet Cruze cargo space varies according to the body style and trim level. The Cruze sedan, L, and LS trim offer a 14.8 cubic-foot trunk size, while the LT and Premier trims offer 13.9 cubic feet. The Cruze hatchback offers 22.7 cubic feet of cargo space and 47.2 cubic feet with the folded rear seats.

Others in the competition deliver similar cargo space as the Cruze, with the Ford accommodating least cargo of all. The Civic does the most, but not by much to make a significant difference. Overall, none of these cars are good for a shopping spree.

Infotainment

All trim levels of the little Chevy feature the Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system, an interface that offers sharp graphics, user-friendly menus, and a responsive touchscreen. The infotainment is offered with a variety of tech features for the passengers inside to be entertained during journeys.

Moreover, the infotainment system comes integrated with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, through which you can easily connect your smartphone and explore apps directly on the touch-screen display. Standard features on offer are:

  • 4G LTE
  • AUX Input
  • Bluetooth Audio/Phone
  • Real-time Traffic
  • USB connectivity
  • AM/FM Radio

Exterior
7.2/10

The Cruze's exterior is available in two colors: Silver Ice Metallic and Summit White. The new 2018 Chevy Cruze is stylish and sleek, while the Chevy Cruze sedan shares some exterior resemblance with the Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid. Moreover, the sedan Cruze model offers an attractive profile with low and long proportions. The rear looks muscular with the integrated spoiler along with a detailed rear bumper. The front gets an oversized grille, which looks quite similar to Camaro's front fascia.

Additionally, the 2018 Chevrolet Cruze is available with 18- or 19-inch wheels. The Chevrolet Cruze is one of the heaviest cars in its segment, and as such it loses out on maneuverability. The length, although less than a complete full-size sedan, is on the upper limit in the segment. Another big dimension of the sedan is its ground clearance.

The Elantra and the Civic are quite light and quite maneuverable as well. Be it a mall parking or tight B-roads, you can always be sure-footed in your driving whereas, the Chevrolet Cruze is not only the bigger car in comparison to its rivals, but it is also the heaviest model in the segment. Some of the most important exterior features of the 2018 Chevrolet Cruze Sedan are:

  • Custom Molded Front And Rear Splash Guards
  • Bright Chrome Accent Grille
  • Wheel Locksyes
  • Flushmount Rear Spoiler
  • Black Bowtie
  • Chrome Appearance

Safety
6.9/10

The federal government organization NHTSA has crash tested the 2018 Chevrolet Cruze and performed brilliantly as it received an overall rating of 5 stars. This 5-star rating gives proof of its tough body. But that’s not all as Chevrolet has brought this sedan with a vast number of active and passive safety features for the safety of the passengers inside. Some of major features include-

  • StabiliTrak, stability control system.
  • Daytime Running Lamps.
  • OnStar Guidance Plan Limited Trial Service
  • OnStar Basic Plan for 5 years
  • Rear Vision Camera display
  • Safety belts, front pretensioner.
  • Safety belts, 3-point, rear center position
  • Restraint provisions, LATCH

Competition
6.0/10

Hyundai Elantra Vs Chevrolet Cruze

There are lots of similar points between Chevy Cruze and Hyundai Elantra. However, 2108 Cruze has a slight advantage over the Elantra. The Cruze offers more standard features, and on the other hand, such amenities like Apple CarPlay and touch-screen display will cost you extra on the Elantra. So, Cruze is a better option here.

Honda Civic Vs Chevrolet Cruze

Honda Civic is one of the renowned compact cars available in the market. Its fuel efficiency is comparable to Cruze, but the handling is more nimble. However, Civic offers a more spacious cabin for five and excellent safety features. Here, Honda Civic is a better choice.

Ford Focus Vs Chevrolet Cruze

There are other high-performance Ford Focus models (the ST and RS hatchbacks models) with which Chevy Cruze can't even compete. But here, the Cruze offers a roomy cabin and better standard technology. The acceleration offered by Ford Focus is on similar lines with the Chevrolet Cruze. So, it is up to you to make a choice

Final Verdict

If you are keen to expand your car-buying budget and looking for a complete standard packaged car, the 2018 Chevrolet Cruze will be the right pick. It is available at a low starting price, enriching standard features, and amazing fuel economy. The Chevrolet MyLink interface is so user-friendly and responsive that it won't disappoint you. Beyond the infotainment, you will experience a spacious cabin, a sizable trunk area, along with decent performance-centric powertrain that makes the ride comfortable.
