About 2018 Chevrolet Impala

3.6

Overall Rating

Every time you hear someone say the word "Impala", chances are that the first thing that will come to your mind will be a old the 1960's V-8 monster that has now become a legend. GM has continued with this legendary brand and given it periodical updates so that the car remains alive even in the minds of the new generation. The 2018 Chevrolet Impala starts at just $28,770 for the 2,5 L Inline 4 motor with the option of a powerful V 6 as well.

The 2018 Chevrolet Impala is powered by a 2.5-liter inline-4 engine, which makes 197hp. The option of a 3.6-liter V6 engine is available, which is capable of making 305 hp. The interior is very spacious and offers a wide variety of comfort features and options between the three trim levels. Chevrolet packages all this into a starting MSRP of $27,895.

With the features like 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, stop-start system and synthetic leather upholstery as standard, the 2018 Impala LS now delivers tremendous value in the full-size sedan segment and we think it's the one to get. We also recommend adding the 3.6L V6 engine as it suits this full-size Chevrolet car better.

2018 Chevrolet Impala Review

Pros

  • Frugal 2.5L Inline-4 Engine
  • Spacious interior
  • Large trunk
  • Cushioned ride and confident handling

Cons

  • High fuel consuming bigger engine option
  • Plastic trims in interior
  • No hybrid powertrain option

Every time you hear someone say the word "Impala", chances are that the first thing that will come to your mind will be a old the 1960's V-8 monster that has now become a legend. GM has continued with this legendary brand and given it periodical updates so that the car remains alive even in the minds of the new generation. The 2018 Chevrolet Impala starts at just $28,770 for the 2,5 L Inline 4 motor with the option of a powerful V 6 as well.

Overview

The 2018 Chevrolet Impala is powered by a 2.5-liter inline-4 engine, which makes 197hp. The option of a 3.6-liter V6 engine is available, which is capable of making 305 hp. The interior is very spacious and offers a wide variety of comfort features and options between the three trim levels. Chevrolet packages all this into a starting MSRP of $27,895.

Pricing and Features
6.0/10

With a starting price of $28,770, the 2018 Chevrolet Impala LS is one of the least expensive ways to get a full-size sedan. Next up is the 2018 Impala LT ($31,295) that notably allows you to access optional features like a sunroof. The range-topping Impala Premier ($37,495) gets a standard V6 and plenty of upscale features. The complete list of trims and features include-

Features

ECOTEC 2.5L 4-cylinder with Direct Injection, Variable Valve Timing, and automatic stop/start

Includes all LT features, plus:

Keyless Access with Push-Button Start

Power-adjustable front passenger lumbar control

8-way power-adjustable front passenger seat

Dual-zone automatic climate control for driver and passenger

Rear Park Assist

6-speed automatic transmission

4-way adjustable front-seat head restraints

Perforated leather-appointed seating

Remote vehicle starter system

3.6L V6 with Direct Injection and Variable Valve Timing

The LS trim is the base trim of the above, coming with a 2.5-liter EcoTec inline 4 engine, keyless access with push-button start, 10 airbags, and 6-speed automatic transmission.

The LT trim adds to the base LS trim with power-adjustable front passenger lumbar control, dual-zone automatic climate control for driver and passenger, 4-way adjustable front-seat, and remote vehicle starter

The top of the line trim Premier includes everything of the LT trim and adds 8-way power-adjustable front passenger seat, rear park assist, perforated leather-appointed seating, and replaces the inline-4 with a 3.6 liter V6 that it borrows from a Camaro.

Buying Advice

We recommend putting your money down on the LT trim. It opens the door to a variety of new features; just make sure to tag in the Driver Assist package as limited vision creates problems at times. If you choose for an additional $1,000, you can get the 305hp V6 for better performance.

Engine and Performance
8.3/10

The Impala has two engine options. The smaller 2.5-liter EcoTec Inline-4 makes 197hp and 191 lb-ft of torque. This engine is standard on base Impala LS and Impala LT. There is the option of upgrading to the 3.6L V6, which makes 305 hp and 264 lb-ft of torque. The V6 is standard on the Premier trim and is an option on the LS and LT trim and can be added at a price of $1,000. Both engines are paired to a 6-speed automatic that manages and directs all the power to the front wheels as there is no other drivetrain option.

Then come to the Chevrolet Impala and the Toyota Avalon with a time of 6.1 seconds each, followed by the Dodge Charger with a time of 6.3 seconds. In the quarter-mile, the order does not change much with the fastest being the Nissan, followed by the Toyota, Chevrolet Impala, and the Dodge.

Ride and Handling

Being a full-size sedan, the Impala's suspension and steering are tuned more for comfort. Hence, it feels cushy and quiet on any type of road at any speed. If you desire this quality, you will be happy with it as it will make you relax a bit while you drive. It will be perfect for driving to work and back.

That said, Chevrolet has also managed to inject a bit more sportiness into the steering and suspension when you have the bigger engine and put your foot down. Even though it is not rear wheel drive, the sporty suspension setup with front wheels drive will still manage to put a smile on your face.

Braking

The Chevy Impala comes with 12.6-inch brake rotors up front and 12.4-inch brake rotors at the back. These brakes are standard with both engine options and are big enough to manage the 3,867-pound large sedan to a stop in 120 feet from 60 mph. It comes with features like brake assist, ABS, and brake control.

Exterior
6.9/10

After the iconic 60s Impala, this Chevy full-size sedan faded into oblivion with anonymous styling. The current third-generation Impala changed that. Sharp creases and tasteful character lines give this new Impala a character of its own, while the sloping roof and fat bonnet also evoke a hint of muscle cars. 18-inch Alloy wheels are standard while swanky 19-inch and 20-inch wheels are on the menu. While the lower Chevy Impala LS and Impala LT get halogen headlamps, the top-end Impala Premier gets HID (high-intensity discharge) headlamps.

Competition
6.0/10

Toyota Avalon vs Chevrolet Impala

The Toyota Avalon gets one engine option and decent performance figures, but when you compare it to a similar engine option from the Chevrolet, the Impala provides better performance and features. However, the lower displacement engine will offer better range and lesser power, but with either engine, the Impala offers better features.

Nissan Maxima vs Chevrolet Impala

While the Impala does have a hint of aggression, the Maxima goes all out snazzy with its styling. Inside, the Impala offers more room and comfort than the Maxima, but the Maxima has a good looking interior with impeccable material quality. Maxima is also significantly faster around corners.

If you drive more often and use rear seats sparingly, the Maxima will impress you more than Impala.

Dodge Charger vs Chevrolet Impala

The Dodge is the cheaper option of the two, but the Impala does offer better features and marginally better performance than the Charger, but this is only with the bigger engine offering for the Impala. Once you get the smaller engine, it is all about getting you from one place to another and without any worries.

Final Verdict

Among the full-size sedans, the new 2018 Chevrolet Impala is a value for money proposition. However, this does not mean it's a compromised package. In fact, it has one of the most spacious interiors in the class with seats large and supportive enough to allow an intercity trip with full family onboard and a trunk capacious enough to swallow all their luggage. Also, it gets an optional engine for an affordable engine swap, making it a good offering.
