About 2018 Dodge Journey

3.1

Overall Rating

Dodge Journey starts from $22,995, which makes it one of the most affordable midsize SUVs currently on the market. Though the basic trim is a rather barebones offering, and successive trims have better conveniences.

The 2018 Dodge Journey enters its 9th model year being on offer. The solid and well-designed build, as well as a plethora of features for an inexpensive price, push it to be the second most popular Dodge sold currently. The Journey has not had any significant changes over the years, and for 2018 comes in priced at $27,990 for the larger V-6 engine.

There are two engine options available on the Dodge Journey, an inline-4 2.4L motor, which makes 173 horsepower, and a larger 3.6L V-6 which offers up 283 horsepower. The larger engine is only available in the AWD variants, and even in the front-wheel-drive GT trim. The pricing starts at $24,400 for the Dodge Journey SE FWD going all the way up to $36,400 for the Journey GT FWD. Competitors for the SUV are other family-oriented SUVs, like the Kia Sorento and the Volkswagen Tiguan.

Buyers on a tight budget should be satisfied with the Journey SE equipped with Popular Equipment and Connectivity packages that gets you Bluetooth, rear-seat ventilation, and overhead storage. However, the Crossroad equipped with the Driver Convenience package offers the best value for money. Available at $4,600 less than the top-trim GT it gets you an Uconnect Infotainment system along with all the features that the Journey boasts. Go for the 3.6-liter V-6 and you will get the best from Dodge

2018 Dodge Journey Review

Pros

  • Cheap for a 3-row SUV
  • Cabin looks enormous
  • Ample Storage space in interiors and trunk

Cons

  • Lacking in interior features
  • Aging Design and old Chassis
  • Low fuel economy compared to modern rivals

Dodge Journey starts from $22,995, which makes it one of the most affordable midsize SUVs currently on the market. Though the basic trim is a rather barebones offering, and successive trims have better conveniences.

Overview

The 2018 Dodge Journey enters its 9th model year being on offer. The solid and well-designed build, as well as a plethora of features for an inexpensive price, push it to be the second most popular Dodge sold currently. The Journey has not had any significant changes over the years, and for 2018 comes in priced at $27,990 for the larger V-6 engine.

Competitors for the SUV are other family-oriented SUVs, like the Kia Sorento and the Volkswagen Tiguan.

Pricing and Features
9.0/10

For 2017 the Journey is now offered in only 4 trims. The base variant now comes better outfitted for better value for money. Optionally a powerful V-6 motor is also offered, though it isn't very efficient, double so compared to the Journey’s refined competition. The range-topping GT comes standard with the bigger motor, while its available as an option for the Crossroad trim.

Engine and Performance
4.9/10

The Journey SE and the Journey Crossroad trims come with an underpowered inline-4 2.4L engine, which makes just about 173 horsepower and 166 foot-pounds of torque. This motor is enough if you are looking at numbers and efficiency, and it does capably get the SUV going, but it does not offer any great response. The inline-4 is only offered with an FWD drivetrain and a 4-speed automatic gearbox.

The optional V-6 engine is much better and offers some usable responses. The engine is well-tuned to make the car a great daily driver. The V-6 puts forth 283 horsepower and 260 foot-pounds of torque. The larger motor also comes with a much better 6-speed automatic gearbox, although it seems more attuned to comfortable linear acceleration as opposed to downshifting and speeding.

The 6-speed gearbox still gets the Journey going rather quickly. It is capable of reaching the 60 MPH mark in just 7 seconds. The SUV has a top speed of about 130 MPH, though a governor limits it to just 118 MPH. The Kia Sorento is much more modern and accelerates quicker when compared to the aging Journey. The comparably priced Volkswagen Tiguan is the most underpowered of the lot, and this has sluggish acceleration, though it is only offered with a turbo inline-4.

Fuel Economy
7.1/10

The 3.6L V-6 and almost no refinement and weight management make the new Dodge Journey a fuel guzzler. The car shows a glimpse of the market a decade ago that didn't care about the mileage figures and number, but more about response and displacement. The Journey returns about 16 miles per gallon in cities, and 24 miles per gallon on highways. The setup makes it highly inconvenient to own in cities, but well specced for the suburbs. The large 21.1-gallon fuel tank gives it some of the best range in the competition, which amounts to at least 400 miles on a full pop.

Even though the Sorento uses a similar naturally aspirated V-6 motor, it has much advancement in ECU tech and thus posts better mileage figures. The Kia also sports a better responding and quick gearbox. The Volkswagen Tiguan is much better at fuel efficiency than almost any of its competitors. The Sorento offers about 350 miles on a full tank, while the Tiguan can go around the same amount.

Interior
6.5/10

The interior is dated and old, though it still offers great storage and space options on all rows. The dashboard and the styling are covered in plastics with barely any soft-touch accents available on any trim. The cabin has useful storage scattered throughout, particularly the center storage under the front-passenger armrest and the bins available below the second-row floor. Although if you consider value for money, the cabin offers plenty of luxury and comfort.

The seating is well-positioned and comfortable on the front row, the second row is a bit squeezed out, with space for only two occupants, though a third passenger can fit in it for shorter rides. The third row has barely any space and is only suited for kids or smaller occupants. The seat folding mechanism on the second row is a tad bit too inconvenient and clumsy. The second row offers 60:40 folding, while the third row can be folded in 50:50.

The Dodge Journey has a good amount of headroom and legroom in the rear row, and also offers considerable storage behind. The Kia Sorento offers much more in terms of rear-seat space, while the Volkswagen Tiguan has almost the same space in the rear. The SUV is well-specced to be a great family carrier, particularly due to the large cargo hold and storage space decked out all over the cabin. The Journey offers some standout interior features which are:

  • Cloth upholstery on SE and SXT trims and leather on the Crossroad and GT trims
  • Heated front seats
  • 60/40 folding second row
  • 50/50 folding third row.
  • 6-way power-adjustable driver’s seat
  • Sliding 2nd-row bench
  • Old school light blue cabin lighting

How intuitive is the 2018 Dodge Journey’s infotainment unit?

Every model of the Journey comes with an easy to use touch screen that runs the UConnect 3 system from Chrysler. The upper trims like GT and the Crossroad offer a larger 8.4-inch touchscreen which fits nicely in the dash. The screen is easy to use and responsive, with features and options for climate control, sound, etc. The display can even be outfitted with a Navigation System design by Garmin and a 4G LTE Connection. It offers Bluetooth, a CD Player, MP3 capability, and SiriusXM Satellite Radio.

There is even a 9-inch display available for the rear seats, an upgraded sound system with 6-speakers with subwoofer, and a 368-watt amplifier. Addition packs also offer the whole list of SiriusXM offerings for extended subscriptions to booth the travel worthiness of the Journey. The infotainment is responsive, although it does seem a bit outdated since it runs the older UConnect 3 and not the updated version. Some standout features in infotainment are:

  • 6-speaker audio system with subwoofer and 368-watt output
  • 8.4-inch UConnect 3 Touch Display
  • Bluetooth and WiFi Connectivity
  • SiriusXM with a 1-year trial subscription
  • Satellite Radio, HD Radio
  • Auxiliary Audio Input
  • MP3 Player

Exterior
5.2/10

The exterior for the new Dodge Journey does not speak of aggressiveness and standing out. Rather the car is designed simply and to the point. The exterior is well-spaced and offers sleek styling and simple lines that make it appealing particularly in darker shades. The headlamps are also retro, and the blacked-out Dodge Cross in the radiator adds a bit of character. The lowest trim isn't appealing with plastic hub-caps on basic steel wheels.

The SXT adds on Alloy wheels, and other details like chromed out roof rails. The Crossroad trim moves toward Subaru like rugged and utility-oriented looks, but not with any increased capability. Since it's an older car, the only addition is some striking LED DRLs in the front, everything else remains the same as a Journey from ten years ago.

The aging build does not offer much in terms of niftiness or agility. The frame is rugged and made from durable steel, though it is quite a bit heavier than almost all its competitors. The Dodge Journey with its long length and thinner width makes it look akin to a wagon or a minivan, though the huge wheels and ground clearance are what discerns it from the Dodge Grand Caravan. The Kia Sorento features more modern looks, while the Tiguan is at its elegant best. Some features in the exterior of the SUV are:

  • Body-colored door handles
  • Automatic headlamps with DRLs
  • Power foldable heated exterior mirrors
  • Intermittent front and rear windshield wipers
  • Chrome roof rails

Safety
8.4/10

The Dodge Journey only almost offers nothing in terms of added safety tech. Though the build quality and design are capable and adequately strengthened. This Dodge can take a beating and score â…˜ star in the NHTSA’s tests. The IIHS also awards it a generally favorable rating, although the front crash strength seems a bit lacking. In terms of safety tech, the only thing the Dodge Journey offers is rear parking sensors. Some standout safety features in the SUV are:

  • Post-Collision Safety System
  • Child Seat Anchors
  • Dual Front Side-Mounted Airbags
  • Stability Control
  • Emergency Braking Assist
  • Passenger Airbag Occupant Se
  • Dusk Sensing Headlamps
  • Auto Delay-Off Headlamps
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring
  • Traction Control

Competition
6.0/10

2018 Dodge Journey Vs. Kia Sorento

The Kia Sorento is overall a better offering in the segment. It offers better seating space, modern, feature rich interiors and better performance.

The Dodge though has a solid build, and a cheaper price tag, while the long duration it has been in the market adds to its resale value. The Kia would be the better choice if you are looking for a capable family car.

2018 Dodge Journey Vs. Volkswagen Tiguan

Although the Volkswagen offers some of the best and most elegant interiors, it comes with the smaller powertrain and the lowest power output. The car itself is much better specced and adhering to modern norms with modern features and well-crafted interiors.

Considering the performance, we would pick the Dodge Journey in this comparison, though the Tiguan is rather convincing if you consider fuel efficiency

Final Verdict

The Dodge Journey follows the same tried and tested recipe it has been offering for 9 years. It still has a great and responsive output and a reliable build. The car is a perfect family mover owing to the space it offers. Even the pricing is quite cheap as compared to most of its competitors. The build quality however screams of an update, and the engine response is sluggish as compared to the modern competitors. The interior and exterior styling is also a bit on the disappointing side. You'd be better off giving up on buying a new 2018 Journey and much rather look for it in the used cars market, which is sure to have cars in great condition owing to the popularity the SUV continues to draw.
