The journey is certainly affordable. It certainly belongs to the bottom end of the price range with the base SE trim starting at $22,995. The Journey is the SUV that can get the job done, and not much else. Although, the 3.6L V6 is efficient and powerful.
The Journey was something of a sensation during its debut in 2009. And while the rest of the competition in the 3-row SUV has moved on, the Dodge Journey has not. Granted, there are a few tweaks here and there in the last ten years, but 2019 shows a major overhaul is badly needed for it to stay in the game. The 2019 Dodge Journey will go up against the GMC Acadia, Kia Sorento SX and the Volkswagen Tiguan.
Buyers on a tight budget should be satisfied with the Journey SE equipped with Popular Equipment and Connectivity packages that get you Bluetooth, rear-seat ventilation, and overhead storage.
If you truly want value for money, you may go with the top-trim GT. It gets you a Uconnect Infotainment system and a package for seating both the driver and the passengers. The Pentastar 3.6L V6 engine comes as standard with this trim and you will get the best Dodge has to offer for the Journey.

When I got my vehicle I got it for 20,000 and have had it for a few years and love everything about the car. I wouldn't trade it for anything. This car is a v6 3.6 liter and it moves fast. I've been offered more than I paid for it a few times.
The journey is certainly affordable. It certainly belongs to the bottom end of the price range with the base SE trim starting at $22,995. The Journey is the SUV that can get the job done, and not much else. Although, the 3.6L V6 is efficient and powerful.

Dodge offers the Journey in three trims and two engine options. The base SE is pretty basic and does not even have Bluetooth as a standard feature. Things don't look too good with the CrossRoad trim that only has a few improvements and a few luxuries that you can get as standard in the base trim in any other vehicle in the class. It's only the range-topping GT that gets you something truly high-end, plus leather seats and a standard V6.

If anything, the base in-line four is a joke. It has an output of just 173 horsepower, which is hilariously low even at the base SE price standards. The V6 is a much better replacement with a decent 283 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. It is the same you would find in other of its Chrysler cousins, such as the Jeep Cherokee and the 300C.

The base 2.4-liter inline-4 engine is woefully slow and takes good 10.4 seconds to make 0-60 making it the slowest in the class. The car might slow down further if you take it for a ride filled with passengers and staff.
All is not lost though as the 3.6-liter V-6 feels strong but it takes 7.4 seconds to go from 0-60 which is still very slow when compared to most rivals with similar engines.

There are not many good things to say about Journey's ride and handling. It handles winding roads perfectly at low speeds although there is a lot of body lean around turns. Take it out on the highway and you will find it is difficult to keep in a straight line. Automatic transmission feels quick to upshift in most conditions while too slow to downshifts on the steep surface.
The journey takes 129 feet to stop from 60-0 which is average for the class. The brakes feel firm even after repetitive use and the car nosedive a bit while hard braking.

With 129ft of stopping on the tarmac, the Dodge Journey fares better than the Kia and the Volkswagen.
It seems like an age has taken its toll on the Dodge Journey. An outdated 2.4-liter inline-4 engine is only good enough to tow 1000 pounds which is very unimpressive as all its competitors provide more towing capacity. Even with the V-6 engine, the maximum towing rate is limited to 2500 pounds. The Sorento leads the competition with an impressive 5000-pound towing capacity.

The Journey seems too far to compete with the best when it comes to fuel economy. It gets the worst EPA rating in the class with the base engine scoring 19 mpg city, 25 mpg highway, and 21 mpg combined. Going for the V-6 engine, the performance drops further as it is rated at 17 mpg city and 25 mpg highway. The Tiguan is the most economical in the range with a combined 22mpg.

The interior has been refurbished for the 2019 Dodge Journey. It gets an improved cabin highlighted by a soft-touch rich looking dashboard along with Dodge's three-spoke corporate steering wheel. Seats are not that spacious as compared to others in the class. However, the first two rows are comfortable enough to hold adults while the third row boasts enough space for kids.
The infotainment system is user-friendly but lacks Apple CarPlay or Android Auto support. The biggest negative of the Dodge Journey is the shrunken cargo space despite its big size.
The Dodge Journey is a highway hauler and your family will feel at ease during a long road trip. The car keeps its control on wobbly pavements and even on rough terrain. Cabin noise is minimal but the slow-reacting transmission gets noisy while climbing steep hills. Adjustable seats make up for the cramped legroom in the second row. Journey gets the same Uconnect touchscreen that other Dodge cars also have. The 8.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system which was optional earlier now comes standard on the Crossroad and the GT while a 4.3-inch touchscreen is standard on the SE.
Overall, the touchscreen is intuitive and easy to use but Dodge uses FCA's older software which is easy to use. Infotainment feature includes:
Cargo capacity is below average for a vehicle this size. The Journey has 10.7-cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row, 37-cubic feet behind the second row, and 67.7-cubic feet overall. These figures put together a bleak future for the car as the rivals offer far better cargo capacity than the dodge. There are storage compartments under the seats and the front passenger seat folds down providing space for longer items.

It looks bland and nearly the same as it debuted back in 2009 and goes unnoticed on the road. Size-wise, it's 192.4-inches in length and exceeds most two-row crossovers in the competition. Dodge designers have worked hard on its exterior with chrome-trimmed crosshair grille and aluminum-alloy wheel but the car still fails to impress.
The base Journey looks pretty downscale with 17-inch steel alloy wheels and plastic hubcaps. Things get a little better in the CrossRoads as it gets alloy wheels, an LED taillight, body-colored exterior mirror, and fog lamps.
To get a more stylish look go for the GT which comes with 19-inch painted aluminum wheels, monochromatic treatment, and GT label. The Crossroad gives you a tougher look with faux skid plates, black aluminum wheels, and a standard rail roof.

Ride quality differs with the wheel size. A 17-inch wheel comes standard on the SE and SXT and offers a smooth ride quality. While the 19-inch wheel is optional on the SXT and comes standard on Crossroad and GT. The ride quality on the 19-inch setup feels bumpy on uneven roads.

The 2019 Dodge Journey GT is yet to be crash-tested on American soil, though last year's results seem promising. The 2018 variant passed the NHTSA crash test rating with a 4-star score. On the other hand, IIHS marked the Journey as Good in their crash test. However, the driver's side and Headlights were deemed Poor in the report.
Dodge didn't back the Journey with a lot of driver-assist features already active in the market like adaptive cruise control, forward collision, and blind-spot monitoring.
Safety Features
Dodge is definitely cheaper than the Acadia while a seven-seat is standard on both the car. However, I would stop here as there is not much to talk about the Journey. Acadia meanwhile proves its money worth with an extensive list of features.
GMC comes standard with a 6-speed automatic transmission while the Dodge Journey SE is equipped with an outdated 4-speed automatic. Dodge is, however, a good car for the family on a tight budget although there are better options available.
There is no comparison here as the Sorento is one of the best midsize SUVs in the segment. If you are looking for a value-packed midsize SUV or a family-friend vehicle then this is the car to go.
It is reasonably priced as well so you will not feel the pinch in your pocket. Pay $3,000 more for the Sorento and you get better fuel efficiency, towing capacity, cargo space, and many more features.
VW Tiguan impresses with the acceleration and better fuel economy but the Journey has more cargo space and better towing capacity. Tiguan bests the Journey in terms of second and third-row seating comfort as it offers better legroom. However, its lone engine feels lethargic while you get to opt for a V-6 engine in the Journey which performs better.
With $2,000 more the Tiguan base feels a bit high priced with the kind of offering that it boasts. Dodge Journey, despite lacking in some areas, offers better value for money.
Overall, the Dodge Journey comes out as a mildly practical mid-size SUV at best. It is great if you don't have much cash to spare, no doubt about it. But with its low price comes so many trade-offs that you wonder if you should consider it at all. It has stiff competition from a number of superior vehicles in its class.
The GT trim will only get you so far. The V6 rules but with wonky steering, it is difficult to control at high speeds. It doesn't give you much confidence in safety either. We shall have to wait and see if any major overhauls are followed up by next year, if at all.
