About 2018 Ford Edge

4.0

Overall Rating

The 2018 Ford Edge is offered with three engine options: a fuel-efficient turbocharged four-cylinder, a smooth V6 optional on the SEL and Titanium, and a muscular twin-turbo V6 found on the Sport. All-wheel drive is optional on all but the Sport get is as standard and all trims feature the same six-speed automatic transmission.

If you’re looking for a family hauler that is easy to drive and pleasing to own, the 2018 Ford Edge may just fit the bill. It may not be as big as a proper three-row SUV but it has plenty of cargo and passenger space. The Ford Edge also boasts superior fuel economy compared to other vehicles in the segment. The 2018 Ford Edge is available in three engine options: a base fuel-efficient, turbocharged four-cylinder, a smooth V6 optional on the SEL and Titanium, and a muscular twin-turbo V6 found on the Sport. All-wheel drive is optional on all, but the Sport gets it as standard and all trims feature the same six-speed automatic transmission.

The SE should be your best bet if you just need a basic crossover without having to worry about a bunch of pricey options. But if you desire something more, we think the SEL is the way to go. It offers more amenities and access to options packages while keeping the price reasonable. Make sure to get it with the Equipment Group 201A package for the desirable Sync 3 infotainment system. We also prefer the V-6 over the turbocharged 4-cylinder engine as the latter feels rather underpowered under certain conditions.

2018 Ford Edge Review

Pros

  • Supple Ride Quality
  • Plenty of cargo and passenger space
  • Comfortable, Insulated Cabin

Cons

  • No Apple CarPlay or Android Auto
  • Slow, Laggy Transmission
  • “Sport” Mode Ride is too Stiff

The 2018 Ford Edge is offered with three engine options: a fuel-efficient turbocharged four-cylinder, a smooth V6 optional on the SEL and Titanium, and a muscular twin-turbo V6 found on the Sport. All-wheel drive is optional on all but the Sport get is as standard and all trims feature the same six-speed automatic transmission.

Overview

Pricing and Features
6.0/10

There is no shortage of options when it comes to choosing the new Ford Edge 2018. There are four different trims available: SE, SEL, Titanium, and Sport with prices ranging from $29,220 to $40,675. In case of powertrains, Ford offers a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine which is standard on SE, SEL and Titanium models. The following table gives an overview of the trims and features available with the 2018 Ford Edge.

There is also an optional 3.5-liter V6 engine (280 hp, 250 lb-ft) available on SEL and Titanium trims. Both engines have a six-speed transmission and standard front-wheel drive. All-wheel drive comes as optional on all trims. The Sport trim in the Edge lineup, unlike others, comes with only one mechanical set-up: a turbocharged 2.7-liter V-6 engine and standard all-wheel drive.

2018 Ford Edge Buying Advice

The SE should be your best bet if you just need a basic crossover without having to worry about a bunch of pricey options. But if you desire something more, we think the SEL is the way to go. It offers more amenities and access to options packages while keeping the price reasonable. Make sure to get it with the Equipment Group 201A package for the desirable Sync 3 infotainment system. We also prefer the V-6 over the turbocharged 4-cylinder engine as the latter feels rather underpowered under certain conditions.

Engine and Performance
8.6/10

There are no major changes mechanically under the Edge's hood for the year 2018. The standard 2.0L turbocharged Inline-4 is potent and perfectly acceptable in most situations. It comes with 245 horsepower and 275 pound-feet of torque, mated to a 6-speed automatic that shifts power through the front wheel or through all four wheels, based on what you pick.

The only downside to the powertrain is that the 6-speed auto could have been quicker to downshift when more power is needed. It stands a bit tardy from a performance point of view but is good enough for most daily applications. There is an old-school 3.5-liter V-6 with 280 hp and 250-pound-feet of torque that powers the midrange Edge crossovers. While the top trim, Edge sports is powered by a 315-hp twin-turbo 2.7-liter V-6. With 350 lb-feet of torque, there is enough gusto along with a burbly exhaust note. Ford also equips their F-150 pickup trucks with the same engine configuration, for your reference.

Among the competition, the 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe comes with the largest engine and puts down the most horsepower. The Ford Edge costs nearly as much but offers more torque from a much smaller engine. While the Kia Sorento comes with a slightly bigger Inline-4 engine than the Ford Edge, it offers the least amount of power and torque among its competitors. The Nissan Murano also comes equipped with a burly 3.5L V6 engine but offers a dull CVT with it.

2018 Ford Edge Acceleration and Braking

The base 245-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-4 takes 7.3 seconds to make it to 60 miles an hour, which is quite average for the class. But if speed is your thing, then go with the 315-hp Edge Sport, which bolts from a standstill to 60 miles per hour in 5.6 and is the quickest in the segment.

The four-pot Edge also manages a decent quarter-mile time of 15.7 seconds and can come to a complete halt from 60 miles per hour in an impressive 119 feet.

7.0/10

The base Ford Edge with the 2.0-liter turbo-4 checks in at 21 miles per gallon in the city, 29 on highways, and 24 combined. At 20/27/23, the all-wheel-drive edition falls off measurably on the highway and combined cycle. The 3.5-liter V-6 in the middle of the Edge lineup garners EPA figures of 17/26/20 miles per gallon, with front-wheel drive and rated at 17/24/19 with all-wheel drive. Twin-turbo 2.7-liter V6 pairs only with all-wheel drive in the Edge, and it's rated at 17/24/20 miles per gallon.

The Nissan Murano comes fitted with the largest fuel tanks, being able to fill 19 gallons of fuel. The Kia Sorento and the Hyundai Santa Fe follow closely behind, offering 18.8-gallon fuel tanks each, while the Ford Edge comes with an 18.0-gallon tank. Thanks to great gas mileage and a large fuel tank, the Nissan Murano delivers a range of up to 532 miles.

Interior
8.5/10

The 2018 Ford Edge offers a smartly laid-out interior and high-quality cabin materials, which certainly boost the premium appeal of the mid-size SUV. Ingress and egress are made easy by wide doors, and there is an ample amount of adjustability in the driver's seat helping them in getting a good view of the road. The front seats are plush and the optional seat coolers make for a comfortable long journey.

The rear seat meanwhile reclines to offer extra space for passengers. There is also enough legroom in both rows to accommodate even the tallest of the adults. The Edge comes with two sets of lower anchors and three tether anchors that make installing a child safety seat easy.

2018 Ford Edge Infotainment

There is no change to the Edge's infotainment for the 2018 model year. The base model SE still comes with little in the way of connectivity, but SEL trim an above can be optioned with Ford's excellent Sync 3 system with an 8.0-inch touchscreen. A SiriusXM Radio is also offered with the Edge’s infotainment, along with Bluetooth audio streaming.

Infotainment also comes with a 6-speaker sound system, which does a pretty decent job of keeping you entertained. The 2018 Ford Edge comes standard with the following infotainment features:

  • SYNC interface with Voice Commands
  • USB port & Bluetooth Connectivity
  • Smartphone App Integration
  • Proximity key
  • SiriusXM Radio
  • CD Player
  • 6-Speaker Sound System

2018 Ford Edge Cargo Space

Being a two-row SUV, Ford Edge has a boot capacity of 73.4 cubic feet with all seats folded and 39.2 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row. The interior also boasts a good number of storage spaces that help enhance the practical aspect of the 2018 Ford Escape.

Hyundai Santa Fe with a 3-row seating has more cargo space than most with 80.0 cubic feet with all row folded.

Edge's rear row has a 60/40 split, and every trim except the base comes with a quick-release button to lay the seats down. A hands-free liftgate is also available.

Exterior
7.5/10

The 2018 Ford Edge has a squat profile though it is neither the tallest nor the widest in the segment. It looks conservative yet stylish with the trapezoidal grille in the front and ending with a sloped rear. The Sport model, meanwhile, looks a little different with its piano black grille treatment, unique headlights, and body-color front and rear fascia.

Wheel sizes range from 18-inch alloys on SE and SEL models to the 19-inch alloys on Titanium models, all the way to 20-inches on the Sport. There is also a 21-inch option available for the Sport trim. The Ford Edge is a bold looking vehicle overall, with little to complain about in terms of exterior styling.

Safety
9.5/10

Mixed reviews from safety agencies hold the Edge back from scoring better in this category. A five-star rating from NHTSA is good, but it doesn't take into consideration IIHS's unique small-overlap crash test, in which the Edge earned only an Acceptable score. In any case, the 2018 Ford Edge comes equipped with a good variety of active and passive safety features that help you give assurance about the American SUV’s occupant protection merit. The SEL, Titanium, and Sport models get Safe and Smart Package that includes adaptive cruise centre-forward collisions on warning, automatic high-beam headlamps, and lane-keeping assist. Some of the safety features offered with the 2018 Ford Edge include the following:

  • Personal Safety System
  • Side-Impact Airbag - Front and Second Row Safety Canopy Side-Curtain with Rollover Sensor.
  • SOS Post-Crash Alert System.
  • LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tether Anchors for Children) System.

  • Rear View Camera
  • Driver knee airbag
  • Glove-box-door-integrated Knee Airbag

2018 Ford Edge vs Nissan Murano

Like the Edge, the Nissan Murano comes under the $30,000 bracket. However, the Murano boasts a degree of luxury which is not usually found at the price point. Its cabin is full of high-grade materials and comes with fairly elegant styling.

Also, front seats are extremely comfortable. The 2018 Nissan Murano is the car to go for if you prioritize luxury.

2018 Ford Edge vs Kia Sorento

The 2018 Kia Sorento is available with five or seven seats and it's pretty good as a family vehicle. The Kia also outperforms the Edge in crash tests, plus it comes with a base sticker price that's thousands of dollars less than that of the Edge.

So, if you are looking for a car that has good safety ratings with five seats, then go for the Sorento which offers really good value for your money.

2018 Ford Edge vs Hyundai Santa Fe

The starting price of the 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe is just $600 more than the Edge's, and it offers a few more toys and seven seats for a similar outlay. The Santa Fe also has a bigger engine and a far better towing capacity than the Ford Edge.

Therefore, instead of opting for the Edge straight away, we certainly recommend checking out the Hyundai Santa Fe, which comes as a better option for the same price.

Final Verdict

The 2018 Ford Edge is a good choice to consider if you do not seek third-row seating. It also has a handsome amount of cargo space for a two-row SUV. The Ford Edge also boasts a roomy interior with ample space in both the rows making it a suitable family hauler. Ford has also offered Sport trim that adds a little bit of sportiness to the SUV. However, there are some better rival crossover SUVs worth considering. Nissan Murano has one of the finest interiors while Hyundai Santa Fe and the Kia Sorento seats up to seven and have better-towing capacity. All in all, the Ford Edge is a great package, given the price tag it comes with. While the final choice of purchase really comes down to the buyer’s preference and priorities, the 2018 Ford Edge manages to give its competitors a good run for their money.
