You can choose AWD ($1,750 extra), Ford's Safe and Smart package with active safety features, driver assistance systems, and others. The story of pay more, get more continues as you go higher up the chain with top-end Ford Titanium (can cross $40,000 fully loaded) being the most luxurious and most expensive in the segment.

Good gas miliage

Pros

More room space more room on floor, Great gas miliage taller door

Cons

2wd not awd not fancy, Slow needs more power and no goner

The ford escape is a roomy car, good gas miliage and does great on long road trips. I would rate the car 9.9/10 and I will buy another one when this one is paid off it’s not a race car but performance is good as well. I like the fact of 35-40 to fill it up and able to go 400 miles on a tank.

2018 Ford Escape Review

Pros

  • Abundantly powerful engine
  • Liberally equipped higher trims
  • Great build quality and smart looks
  • Fun to drive characteristics

Cons

  • Lower trims are scantly equipped
  • Brake fails to impress
  • Optional safety features for a higher cost

The new third-generation 2018 Ford Escape is a crossover option for those in need of a 5 passenger vehicle with a decent boot and good towing capability. The powerhouse to propel is adequate and it has quite decent features expected from an SUV.

Overview

The new third-generation Ford Escape is a crossover option for those in need of a 5 passenger vehicle with a decent boot and good towing capability. The 2018 Ford Escape interior amenities depend largely on trim as the base Escape S is scant among the competition, while the top Titanium trim is more luxuriously appointed than any of the competition. This Ford compact SUV, however, is a bit partial with best in class front legroom but below average rear legroom. Ford SYNC 3, Ford's next-generation infotainment, is available from SEL trim onwards.

The powerhouse to propel all these depends on trim too; the base Escape S ($23,850) gets outdated, least powerful, and thirsty 2.5L I4. The next in line is the new 1.5L EcoBoost in Escape SE ($25,605) and Escape SEL ($28,005). It`s significantly more powerful and delivers more efficiency than the base 2.5L I4.

Pricing and Features
9.0/10

The base 2018 Ford Escape S retails at $23,850. That's below the segment favorite Honda C-RV (starting from $24,150) and Mazda CX-5 ($24,045). However, stay away from the Escape S as it lacks any desired features and comes with the downright unsatisfactory 2.5L I4. The base Sportage LX costs less ($23,500), is better appointed and its 2.4 L I4 delivers power and efficiency on par with costlier rivals. Anyways, continuing with Escape, the Escape SE, and higher trim starts making sense with 1.5L EcoBoost and 2.0L EcoBoost engines.

Except for the top-end Titanium trim, FWD configuration is standard on all trims. The optional $2,850 Titanium Elite package 2.0 adds a head-up display and a panoramic moonroof which is exclusive to the Titanium trim only.

Buying Advice

You can choose AWD ($1,750 extra), Ford's Safe and Smart package with active safety features, driver assistance systems, and others. The story of pay more, get more continues as you go higher up the chain with top-end Ford Titanium (can cross $40,000 fully loaded) being the most luxurious and most expensive in the segment.

Engine and Performance
8.5/10

The Ford Escape has three engine options and one of them, the 2.0L EcoBoost, is the most powerful among rivals. The steering feels alive and the suspension keeps the body motions in check. All these make for a satisfying driving experience. However, all this sportiness also comes with a compromise - jittery ride quality.

The Ford Escape comes with a single 6-Speed Automatic Transmission. The base 2.5L naturally aspirated engine only acts as a tool to advertise a low starting price. The engine produces a power of 168 horsepower and a torque of 170 lb-ft which is lively but not upto the expectations of the customers. Therefore, the engine can be said to lack both fuel efficiency and performance.

The data indicates that the Honda CR-V produces the maximum horsepower and it is also the strongest engine in the segment. The Ford Escape has a decent engine but the power it produces is significantly less than its competitors.

Acceleration and handling of the 2018 Ford Escape

The Ford Escape with the base 2.5L engine accelerates quite slowly as it takes 9.1 seconds for a 0-60 sprint. The acceleration cannot be said to be peppy and this is one aspect that could be improved in future models. Moreover, the handling qualities of the Ford Escape is in line with its name - Escape.

Down the sinuous road, it hunts corner like a hound and you are left questioning yourself how you can enjoy a drive in a high riding crossover. The ride quality though is not compromised and the Ford Escape remains supple in the city or on highway excursion.

The data indicates that the Ford Escape is the slowest model in the segment and it takes the maximum time to reach its desired speed. The Kia Sportage on the other hand is the fastest model in this segment proving to have s swift acceleration.

Braking performance of the 2018 Ford Escape

After impressing everybody on other dynamic fronts, the Ford Escape brake lets it down. It took the longest to stop from 60 mph - 184 feet which is quite disappointing coming from a long-standing brand like Ford. The slow responsiveness of the brakes is quite a letdown and brings down the overall performance of the Ford Escape.

The Ford Escape performs poorly in this segment as it is the slowest model in terms of its braking performance. The Kia Sportage and Mazda CX-5 Sport are not exceptionally responsive but it is still better than the Ford whereas, the CR-V is the most efficient model in terms of its braking performance.

The towing capacity of the 2018 Ford Escape

Interestingly, the trailer tow package gets you to paddle shifters. You also get trailer sway control technology and a transmission oil cooler to handle the added load. The segment leader Honda CR-V gets a below-average tow rating of 1500 pounds. The Kia Sportage and the Mazda CX-5 can tow up to 2000 pounds.

Fuel Economy
7.9/10

The base 2.5-0liter delivers 21 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway for a combined EPA rating of 24 mpg. These figures are quite subpar and are not sufficient enough for an SUV. This means that the SUV will often have to hit the gas station to keep the engine running.

The data indicates that the Honda CR-V is the most fuel-efficient model in the segment. The Kia Sportage and Mazda CX-5 also produce a decent fuel economy but the Ford Escape loses out points with regards to its competitors since its fuel economy is not frugal.

Interior
7.5/10

The interior of the Ford Escape is quite simple but it looks good. It doesn’t look boring at all as it includes an abundance of features which is successful enough in fixing the occupant’s attention to the cabin. The cabin offers a premium feel as it is made up of soft-touch surfaces and it also includes a leather upholstery which gives an elite feel to the model.

The Ford Escape can seat up to five passengers and is made up of quality cloth. The front passengers are treated with generous legroom and comfortable seats. The rear seats are also comfortable but they offer the lowest in class legroom and are somewhat cramped for adults. A "media bin" is located in the center console which is the storehouse of all the enhanced features responsible for making the ride fun.

Exterior
7.3/10

The 2018 Ford Escape exterior exudes athletic elegance. The design starts from the Aston Martin-like front grille (signature of modern fords) protruding in the airstream. From there on, numerous tight lines seem to drape the escape giving an overall impression of a fast block of stone-hurling through a silky cloth.

The most noticeable of these are two crisp lines on the bonnet that look like a crease on that aforementioned hypothetical cloth. We think Ford's Ruby Red looks most striking as it beautifully highlights the creases and its metallic sheen perfectly complements the chrome garnish in the grille making for an upscale look. White Platinum also works great if you are a fan of that color.

The explorer has an average length among the competition at 178.1 inches. For comparison, the lengthiest competitor - Honda CR-V is 180.6-inch in length. It has the lowest width and its height is below average. All this makes for a compact proportion. The Escape is, however, one of the heaviest compact SUVs. The main exterior features of the Ford Escape are:

  • Splash guards
  • LED taillights
  • Foot-operated liftgate
  • Power liftgate
  • Heated Rear View Mirror
  • Panoramic Sunroof

Safety
9.1/10

The new Ford Escape performed well in various crash tests by NHTSA with an overall 5-star safety rating. However, IIHS does not award its top safety pick rating. That's understandable because ford is partial in terms of trim even with the safety. While other competitors at least offer essential safety features on the base trim, you have to buy higher trims in ford to feel safe.

Competition

Honda CR-V Vs Ford Escape

The new Honda CR-V continues on the path of its predecessor offering a combination of sumptuous and spacious interiors, segment-best fuel economy, predictable handling and well-controlled body motions, good ride quality, and plenty of techs.

All this in a reliable and safe package that's priced appropriately leaves little to complain about. However, ford is more deliciously equipped if you are ready to pay liberally.

Kia Sportage Vs Ford Escape

The new Kia Sportage is a recent contender in the compact SUV segment and offers solidly built and roomy interiors with great styling. It is the go-to car if you are looking for an under $24,000 compact SUV. However, do know that its fuel economy is sub-par.

Mazda CX-5 vs Ford Escape

The new Mazda CX-5 is a great option if you want great driving characteristics from a compact SUV. Further, it now also has a dose of practicality with a tastefully designed exterior and delicious interiors.

However, it does lack the interior space against the Escape and your choice should boil down to your preference.

Final Verdict
6.8/10

The 2018 Ford Escape happens to be the most enticing option for anyone who looks for the most upmarket thing in anything they buy. That means you have to pay over $40,000 for a compact SUV to get a car loaded with features like a universal garage opener and you find yourself sitting in a cockpit with ambient lighting. But it's not just cosmetic, the ride quality is supple and the car handles with precision making it genuine fun to drive.
