2018 Ford F-450 SuperDuty diesel Review

Pros

  • Sheer towing prowess
  • Large size
  • Dually Spacious and luxurious interiors
  • Class-leading in almost every aspect

Cons

  • F 350’s variant may offer better-towing capacity in a smaller size
  • Large size compromises urban maneuverability
  • Tyres are expensive to replace

Equipped with a dura torque engine the Ford F 450 is a class leader of yesteryear. With Ram's inline 6 churning out torque in 4 digit ballpark the Ford and other competitors have some catching up to do.

Overview

The Ford Motor company has come a long way from the Model T and this behemoth pickup truck as an example of all the things that the company has learned and amassed since the first truck they released. The F-450 is the amalgamation of the needs of a heavy lugger and the philosophy of “more is more”. Endowed with a V8 that produces a staggering 935 lb-ft of torque this truck manages to be on the top even when its brethren offer serious competition. The pole position hogging F series does not let go of this trait even in the commercial vehicles sections, And for as low a $57,000 this can be yours.

Pricing and Features
9.0/10

Available in 6 trims, the F-450, as compared to the smaller sibling F-350, only sports a single-engine option with Dually configuration and an 8ft bed. The XL variant shall satisfy most of the working-class people's needs but if you want a luxury studio apartment on wheels then the Platinum or the Limited trim will make you feel right at home.

We recommend

The XL variant shall satisfy your hauling needs and if you want the extra pizzazz and panache in the interior then you should go for the King Ranch, Limited, or Platinum trim. The extra plush leather seating shall make the ride posh but will make your pocket equally light.

Engine and Performance
8.5/10

The bellowing and attention-demanding 450 hp engine makes an aggressive sound that is a testimonial to the overworking and hard-hitting ponies under the hood that churns out a massive 935 lb-ft. of sheer pulling power, unmatched by others in its class. These numbers shall be enough to give any enthusiast goosebumps, to say the least. Driveability in the city is equally good and effortless with enough power on tap at all times. The motor is smooth and refined considering its huge 6.7liter displacement and the 6-speed automatic keeps the engine relaxed by staying in the right gear.

Being best in class has its perks and being on the top of the priority list of people happens to be one of them. The Ford pickup truck enjoys the top spot and being an unusually large truck(22x8feet) it also happens to be one of the few 1.5-tonne trucks available to the consumers. The competition expands to a ¾ tonne realm too just because of the lack of 1.5 trucks. Going on pure towing prowess each truck holds their own and offers something that the others don't. Unfortunately though, the Nissan Titan XD sits at the bottom with the smallest engine and least power figures among the competition.

Acceleration

Judging a truck's ability to race to 60 mph might seem futile at first but it certainly does help in planning overtaking maneuvers on the highway. With such monstrosities roaming on the streets it's natural to assume that the sheer size and weight may act as an antagonist to the real hero "Speed". That being said, the Ford F-450 isn’t lethargic either. It picks up the pace rather decently considering its heft and can hit 60mph within 8-seconds. The truck can accomplish the standing quarter-mile run within a decent time of 16.1 seconds.

The 8-sec time on the clock may not be the most jaw-dropping but keeping in mind it does better than the other 1.5-tonne trucks only adds to its accolades. The Nissan Titan XD might be the least powered of the lot but surprisingly it is the quickest to complete both the 0-60mph and the standing quarter-mile run. The RAM 4500 is the slowest to complete the 60mph run while the GMC Sierra 3500HD does it in a decent 7.7 seconds.

How good are the brakes?

The humongous size of the behemoth truck makes it hard to brake when it gains momentum. This translates to a longer braking distance and a need for sturdy hands on the wheels. For what it's worth, Ford's stopping distance is in the same league as the GMC which is a ¾ tonne truck. Surprisingly though, the F-450 comes with the biggest set of brakes among the competition which is merely capable to halt the truck at a distance of 135 feet.

Not for the faint-hearted, this grand chariot graces its rider with the maximum towing capacity but that also translates to a large stopping distance. The Nissan Titan XD surprises in this aspect as well with an outstanding stopping distance of 124 feet. It is also possible owing to its lower curb weight and brakes of adequate proportions.

Ride and Handling

Pickup trucks are not known to possess a comfortable ride quality except for when it is fully loaded. But that is not the case with the F-450. From the driver’s seat you'll get an eagle-eye view of the whole road thanks to its towering ride height. A ride befitting a king at least by its size this truck is surprisingly comfortable and inviting for a long ride. The steering response leaves much to be desired and the braking seems stiff too. For a truck with the price tag of a Corvette the Ride and handling aspect maybe the only thing that may be disappointing if we are being extremely picky

For the average Joe, the ride and handling is surprisingly comfortable for a lugger but urban mobility is severely restricted due to its size. Overtaking maneuvers need to be very well planned in advance due to the slow acceleration time and the 22 feet length of the truck does not make it easy for a quick overtake. For what it's worth this is for the countryside haulers and luggers who rarely make it past the suburbs. If you're planning to use this in the city you're going to have a tough time maneuvering it in the city traffic.

Fuel Economy
8.0/10

EPA does not rate Truck’s mpg.

Interior
9.0/10

The plush interiors grace its rider with a feeling of opulence and royalty while entering the cabin. This feeling is maintained throughout the 6 seater cabin. There's no lack of interior space in this truck, the rear seats are as comfortable as the front seating. The electronic-retractable steps on a few models also aid in the entry and exit from the truck. There are plenty of storage spaces inside the cabin to store your medium to smaller sized amenities.

The F-450 is a class leader in almost all of the parameters in the above-mentioned table. Offering the roomiest of cabins the 22x8 dually does know how to spoil its handler. The Nissan Titan XD might have a decent headroom but it lacks shoulder room both at the front and the back which might pose a difficulty for exceptionally big adults. Both the RAM 4500 and the GMC Sierra 3500HD have comparable seating dimensions with the F-450 and they offer a decent amount of comfort features too.

Cargo volume

Carrying cargo is one of the jobs that a pickup truck is designed and made for. It is also one of the most important deciding factors for a prospective buyer while purchasing one. Ford has racked up the F-450 with an impressive 78.5 cubic feet of storage capacity amongst its competition. This is enough to satiate most people's needs and desires.

While the F-450 offers the best in class cargo capacity, closest to it is the GMC Sierra 3500HD with a respectable 76.3 cu.ft of space. The RAM 4500 has a decent 75 cu.ft while the Nissan Titan XD has the lowest capacity of 74 cu.ft which is not quite bad either.

Towing Capacity

The defining trait is the deciding factor whilst buying a truck it all boils down to this section because at the end of the day no one wants to buy a truck that can't lug and get the job done. The Ford F-450 Super Duty has an excellent towing capacity of 21000 lbs in its default Dually configuration.

Leading the class again, the American powerhouse steamrolls over the rival trucks with ease. The massive dually crushes its competition and there's a sizable difference between the nearest competition the RAM 4500.

Exterior
9.0/10

The king of the road also looks like one. Finesse, class, and power all combined in one is what takes to be a truly royal truck. Opulence-inducing, aesthetically pleasing the Ford F-450 is kind of like a hard worker that even after achieving success hasn't lost touch with its roots. There are plenty of chrome details on the exterior, mainly at the front fascia. The C-shaped headlights are huge and all-LED units incorporated with bright DRLs. The front grille sees an excess of chrome detailing with a big logo of the Blue Oval donning the center.

Intimidating, daunting, and bold the Model T makers gave the F-450 everything they had. Largest wheelbase check, the segment leader in length, width, and height check, along with the maximum ground clearance. The RAM 4500 is the most compact option among the rivals in terms of exterior dimensions while the Titan XD has the minimum ground clearance on offer.

Safety
8.0/10

Safety is of utmost importance for any modern vehicles including pickup trucks. Since these vehicles are used regularly and are subjected to work under various conditions, having a good set of safety features is a must. The Ford F-450 Super Duty comes with a host of safety features to tackle day-to-day driving with ease. F 450 vs Ram 4500

The chariot on wheels overpowers the RAM 4500 in almost every aspect and does so with class. The RAM has outdated interiors and tech that won't please someone dropping north of 50k on a vehicle. The 4500 may make up for it in the towing department but the sheer size and the not so pleasing

F 450 vs GMC Sierra 3500 HD

The ¾ tonne trucks are barely a match for the behemoth. Rivaling its towing capacity all thanks to the Duramax engine the GMC gives F 450 stiff competition but in the end, is triumphed by the monstrosity called the Ford F-450.

F 450 vs Nissan Titan XD

An anomaly in the segment owing to the large payload capacity but low towing capacity the Japanese is in for a hard time on the American soil. The Ford counterpart absolutely crushes the Nissan in every segment without mercy.

Final Verdict
8.4/10

The 2018 Ford F-450 is a big truck no doubt but it is also a niche truck that does not cater to a large demographic. With its weight and size, the F-450 can be configured to have better towing capacity up to 34,000lbs. With severely compromised urban maneuverability and a niche set of skills, the F-450 is not a vehicle that everyone can pilot within the city limits. The average Joe would afford this if he only has the dough, if not we suggest going with its competitors.
