About 2018 Honda Odyssey

4.2

Overall Rating

The 2018 Honda Odyssey is equipped with an all 3.5 liter V-6 powerful engine, that ruptures out a horsepower 280 with a torque rate of 262 lb-ft. It has a big mass volume, however drives like a smaller vehicle, with buttery smooth turns.

The Honda Odyssey is a minivan meant for people with large families who want comfortable seating for all their family members while on the go.  It offers a host of family-friendly features along with a responsive infotainment system, enjoyable handling, and a strong powertrain. A fifth-generation minivan, which is a lot more than a maneuver "van", the 2018 Honda Odyssey is equipped with an all 3.5-liter V-6 powerful engine. It is no small vehicle and scores big on volume, however drives like a smaller vehicle, thanks to its responsive steering.

Being a front-wheel drive train as standard, it gets a 9-speed automatic transmission as a standard and 10-speed automatic transmission in Touring and Elite trim. The base trim starting from $29,850, is not the best one to buy as a $4,000 extra in an upgraded version will give a lot more features than this one. Although there are other minivans at a lesser price available, the Honda's entrusted ownership with so many in-house features takes away the game. It's also the only minivan that is available with all-wheel drive.

The EX trim comes with all the basic features that you require in a Minivan. Although there is a cheaper LX trim but skip that one as it doesn't offer better value. If you are looking for more premium features, then Touring trim offers cool features like a 10-speed automatic, front-rear parking sensors, post collision safety, rear video monitor, and more.

Overview

The Honda Odyssey is a minivan meant for people with large families who want comfortable seating for all their family members while on the go.  It offers a host of family-friendly features along with a responsive infotainment system, enjoyable handling, and a strong powertrain. A fifth-generation minivan, which is a lot more than a maneuver "van", the 2018 Honda Odyssey is equipped with an all 3.5-liter V-6 powerful engine. Pricing and Features
7.0/10

The Honda Odyssey's price starts at $29,850 bucks, whereas the highest model comes at a price of $45,325, a lot pricier than the base model. One should consider buying the EX model or trim higher than the base as it has few more options available than the LX model, for instance, the radar adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assistance, Honda's autonomous braking system called collision mitigation braking, road departure mitigation system. The higher model also offers you four front LED lights and two fog lights.

Also, the second-row sliding seating isn’t an option available in the base trim LX, it doesn't get the sliding 2nd-row seats, so the floor beneath gets a different treatment.

Engine and Performance
8.9/10

The redesigned 2018 Honda Odyssey is priced lesser than other minivans and there's no wrongdoing in saying that it performs accurately better than its predecessors. A very smooth manageable steer handling, which controls anything like butter, a great suspension to handle out bumpy roads, the extra horsepower is surely appreciated. Acceleration and power are taken care of by a 3.5-liter V6 engine that generates 280 horsepower and is mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission or a 10-speed automatic transmission. Both transmissions are quite smooth and the engine feels very refined as well. It can take care of the city chores as well as the highway runs. However, it requires quite a lot of planning to overtake if you are going full house. The throttle requires a lot of inputs in such scenarios but feels responsive as well at any given time. The motor gets noisy at high RPMs but does not turn harsh by any means.

It is believed to have a great fuel economy, which makes a better overall performance altogether.

Toyota Sienna takes the cake by offering the best power and torque figures of 296hp and 263lb-ft, respectively. As can be seen from the table above, the Odyssey is the least powerful of the lot but redeems itself when it comes to price to power ratio.

Acceleration

The 2018 Honda Odyssey glides smoothly off the line, through gears. On the city streets and in parking lots, it feels quite manageable just like a smaller vehicle. Not only does this minivan work wonders in cities, even on the highways it moves swiftly and is quite engaging. It feels quite nimble as well as quick off the line for a minivan. However, you should not expect any rubber burning grunt under the hood.

The driver will also notice the car's enhanced drivability when this car is carrying a full load of cargo and passengers.

The base model doesn't come with a lot of versions, but the Touring and Elite versions come with a new, slick 10-speed automatic transmission, a world-first in front-wheel-drive according to Honda. A swift acceleration around the town. Here Honda shows its dominance by taking the least amount of time to reach 60mph from a standstill, followed by Sienna and then Pacifica.

Handling and steering

The handling of the car is easy and sound. It controls well in the city as well as on the highway. It changes direction a lot more crisply while piloting it, you wouldn' t realize it having three rows in the back. Odyssey's steering is extremely precise, which offers a comfortable ride, with a virtual feedback.

However the new Chrysler Pacifica offers the same, but Odyssey pulls ahead way firmer and handles greatly around the corners even through transitions. It has a four-wheel independent suspension, which is the cause for a smooth balanced ride and minimal lean through turns. Everything is well tied to a perfectly weighted multi-functional steering wheel.

Braking

All the four wheels of the Honda Odyssey come with a disc braking system. Also included in each wheel is the Anti-Lock Braking System, which takes care of the minivan and its passengers during sudden braking operations. A 12.6 inch brake rotors come for the front wheels and a 13 inch for the rear section. The Honda Odyssey ranks in between the two rivals with a curb weight of 4,354 lbs.

The Odyssey tips the scale at 4,581 lbs. Although its braking performance is not as great as some other cars. In a panic brake test from 60 mph, Odyssey stopped at 184 feet, slightly longer than the competitors. This department is held by pacifica by taking least amount of length, measuring 177ft.

Fuel Economy
9.0/10

Honda wasn't the only one excelling in the EPA ranking test, in fact, the Chrysler Pacifica with 31-mpg test results, outperformed in its class in comparison to Odyssey. Whereas Toyota Sienna and Odyssey EX-L underperformed, be it in fuel efficiency or overall range. The Honda Odyssey returns an average of 19 mpg in the city, 28 mpg on the highway, and 22 mpg with mixed driving conditions.

More or less all the competitions in the segment have similar fuel economy with just marginal differences among each other. The Honda Odyssey has a large tank, but it could not outbeat the tank capacity of the Toyota Sienna, which happens to be a 20 gallons unit. With combined driving conditions and for the tank capacity that each of these minivans possess, it can run for a total of 429 miles(Honda Odyssey), 440 miles(Toyota Sienna), and 418 miles(Chrysler Pacifica).

Interior
8.5/10

Hauling and loading cargo or taking a cabin full of passengers from one place to another is the minivan's primary function, which Odyssey does with a poise. Its second and third-row seats are amongst the roomiest in the segment. Its second-row seats are very comfy when compared with Pacifica. Throw in some tech ingenuities, and Odyssey's stylish class in the cabin is a perfect fit for the family. The cabin also feels well-built and offers great ergonomics.

The 2nd rows offer plush cushions and chairs that recline, the most comfortable seating you would ever ask for. The EX-L trim can accommodate up to 8 people with a great leg as well as headspace. Even at long distances, you wouldn't get tired of sitting in the same position. The 2018 Odyssey has really done justice to comfy, hassle-free rides. It gets 4/5 ratings for its added comfortable long run rides.

A spill-resistant cloth upholstery, an eight-way power-adjustable driver's seat, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel are all part of this Japanese minivan. There is plenty of legroom as well as headroom, power sliding doors, and magic slide second-row seats, which adjust laterally, backward, and forward in five different positions. A quality that would be literally loved by the kids of the family. Few key features include-

  • Easy to use Infotainment system
  • Vast cargo space, luggage efficient
  • Old-school navigation system
  • Voice recognition system
  • Active moonroof
  • Spacious and really comfortable seats

Cargo Space

Odyssey might be well-styled but is a big box on the wheels. Its square shape and low-load floor mean more cargo space, but some rival minivans do it better with less hassle, as you don't have to put in back-straining efforts to remove the seats. There are 38.6 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row of seats, 92 cubic feet behind the second row, and 158 cubic feet behind the first row.

39.1 cu-ft

32.3 cu-ft

When compared to the 2017 Odyssey, the 2018 model has more room behind the third and first rows, but slightly less room behind the second row. The third row of seats easily folds flat to load large cargo. However, in Chrysler and Dodge, the second-row seat option bends in the floor leaving a rather smoother surface. Toyota Sienna takes the front seat with a margin of 0.5 cu-ft.

Infotainment system

The Odyssey's infotainment system is very responsive and easy to use, even for the parents. Although its USB port response is a bit stingy than the rival minivans. Available features include an 8-inch touchscreen (except for the base LX trim), which literally converts into a smartphone's screen, thus creating easy usability. With the old system being laggy and unresponsive, this one comes with active Bluetooth, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay.

Other features include Cabin Control (which lets you send destinations to the Odyssey's navigation system and control the rear-seat entertainment system and climate settings with your smartphone), Cabin Talk (which lets the driver communicate with the second-and third-row passengers using a microphone), Honda VAC (an in-vehicle vacuum), Cabin Watch (which uses a camera to provide a view of the second and third rows on the touch-screen display), HondaLink (which gives you remote access to your minivan), a Wi-Fi hotspot. In Elite and Touring class, there is an option of a rear camera where parents could have a close look at their child's activities. Some of the infotainment features present on the 2018 Honda Odyssey Minivan are:

  • Android Auto
  • Apple CarPlay
  • 5-inch display
  • 7-speaker sound system
  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • USB Port
  • Navigation System(Optional)
  • Satellite Radio(Optional)

Exterior
8.1/10

Minivans are designed to be stylish but not overtly extroverted when it comes to design. With Odyssey, you wouldn't complain as its magical sliding doors and hatch are stylish and easy to use, although its flanks are busy with creases. Its exterior dimensions are vast and its nimble nature keeps the van unwieldy.

Being a large vehicle, it doesn't seem to cause any problems while maneuvering. Despite being 17 feet long and 6.5 feet wide, it feels heavy and is capable of squeezing itself at the parking lots.

It doesn't have boring looks like any other minivan, plus it's longer. Somewhere same as Chrysler Pacifica but some 3-inches longer than the Toyota Sienna. The front grille in the EX model or any model above the base model has a grille that enhances fuel economy. Few infotainment features include-

  • 17-inch Alloy wheels
  • Stylish sliding door
  • Automatic side rear lights
  • Active stylish body design.
  • Longer in minivans than the rest of the present ones.

Safety
9.8/10

With its wide-opening rear doors, it's best for families with young children to have rear-facing infant seats installed with zero hassles. Fitting second-row seats into third ones require effort, but Honda has made tethering for three seats on the way back easier. Honda's standard safety features are available in all, but not in the base LX trim. The bundle includes automated emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high-beam headlamps, to name a few assists. Other features include-

  • Lane departure warning
  • Road departure mitigation system
  • Forward collision warning
  • Child safety locks
  • Brake Assist
  • Electronic Stability Control
  • 4-wheel disc brakes
  • Night vision
  • Rollover protection system
  • Blindspot monitor
  • Auto-leveling headlights
  • Lane departure warning Lane keeping assist
  • Cross-Traffic alert

2018 Honda Odyssey vs Toyota Sienna

The Toyota Sienna is a popular option and ranks in the middle portion of the top minivan cars. It has a powerful engine and comfortable seats. The interior is roomy and spacious. However, coming from the house of the famous Japanese automaker Toyota, the Sienna is indeed higher on reliability than any other minivan in the segment.

This also happens to be the only minivan to be available with an All-wheel Drive. It hosts standard active safety features that keep the minivan shielded against all accidents.

2018 Honda Odyssey vs Chrysler Pacifica

The Chrysler Pacifica is known for its upscale interiors. It also hosts a ton of user-friendly features. Going on weekend and vacation trips can be quite fun in this van as it offers a comfortable and balanced ride quality. A good fuel economy is another added advantage.

The infotainment system is easy to use and the front seats offer ample space for a comfortable seating position.

Final Verdict
8.7/10

Honda has certainly raised the bar for the minivan community with the all-new 2018 Odyssey Minivan. An upgraded infotainment system aced safety ratings, and an enchanting seating experience provides the extreme solace of personal space to the onboard people. The ship's captain can keep an eye on its crew with the new parent support feature and the Odyssey comes with many such clever features. The only bad thing about this car is the painful way of second seat removal to gain the optimum cargo space utility. If you can work out with that, then this minivan from Honda is a worthy deal in this segment.
