About 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee

4.0

Overall Rating

The new 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee offers an impressive mix of luxury and performance topped with a generous dose of rough road capability and panache.

Jeep is a brand that has become synonymous with the term "off-road" over the ages. The foray into the executive SUV segment by Jeep was made way back in the early 1990s. Fast forward to present times, the 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee is a premium SUV but it still does complete justice to its off-road heritage. 2018, a 7-inch touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are now standard.

Jeep also introduced the most powerful SUV called Trackhawk with a 707-hp supercharged V8 engine under the hood. The Grand Cherokee offers an impressive mix of luxury and performance topped with a generous dose of rough road capability and panache. It competes with rivals like the Hyundai Santa Fe Sport, Nissan Murano, and Ford Edge

All the trims of the Grand Cherokee are tempting, but most buyers will prefer the Altitude trim as it offers a balanced set of creature comforts and tech features. This model adds a heated steering wheel and front seats, an 8.4-inch touchscreen with navigation, a power liftgate, and a 9-speaker stereo.

Owners who end up with a middle-grade Grand Cherokee are likely to be happy with its driving dynamics- Autoblog

There are a lot of engine variants available with the Jeep Grand Cherokee. There is a standard 3.6L V6 which makes 295 hp and 260 lb-ft. torque and it's mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. Some trims can opt for the 5.7L V8 that makes 360 hp and 390 lb-ft. of torque. Then there is a 6.4L HEMI V8 engine which makes 475 hp and 470 lb-ft torque on the SRT variant.

The bonkers 707-hp 6.2L supercharged HEMI V8 tops the range and makes the Grand Cherokee Trackhawk one of the quickest SUVs in the world. The Grand Cherokee has a firm ride quality. The high-end models address this to some extent with the Quadra-Lift air suspension but it still leaves something to be desired out of the handling department.

The base V6 is definitely is no road scorcher. It bolts from 0-60 MPH in 7.4 seconds with a quarter lap timing of 15.9 seconds.  But for horsepower addicts, Jeep placed a 707-hp Trackhawk which can shoot this SUV to 60 MPH in just 3.7 seconds. The strong 4-wheel disc brakes can stop this heavy SUV from 60 MPH in under 125 feet.

The Ford Edge easily beats its rivals in terms of performance despite being underpowered. The Nissan Murano and the Hyundai Santa Fe Sport share the same performance stats. However, the former has the worst towing capacity for a midsize SUV. The Grand Cherokee's heavyweight puts it behind its rivals.

Fuel Economy
6.0/10

With a high curb weight and two old-school engines, the Grand Cherokee never delivered stellar gas mileage figures- Carbuzz

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is one of the least efficient midsize SUVs in its class. The RWD variant returns 19 MPG in the city, 26 MPG on the highway, and 21 MPG combined while the 4WD models return 1 MPG less. The optional V8 engine has a combined economy of 17 MPG.

These ratings are below the segment standards but considering the power it makes, the fuel economy is understandable. A large 24.6-gallon fuel tank is fitted in the Grand Cherokee through which it can deliver a maximum combined range of 517 miles in its most efficient form.

Interior
8.3/10

Build quality is top-notch in the Grand Cherokee- Edmunds

The interior design of the 2018 Geep Grand Cherokee feels much more premium than its class rivals. The high-quality materials, well-bolstered seats, and great interior features provide a comfortable feeling inside the cabin. The higher trims add a lot of luxury touches to the cabin like piano black and faux wood trims.

The Grand Cherokee is best suited for shuttling 4 people as 5 people will find it a bit of a squeeze. The rivals here do offer a significantly better passenger volume and a slightly better shoulder room but fare almost similarly in all the other dimensions. The head and legroom, however, are great for full-grown adults.

The competitors simply offer more practicality in this segment. The Grand Cherokee is fitted with all the bells and whistles when It comes to the infotainment system.

Exterior
8.5/10

The 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV has a familiar look that has worn well- Kelly Blue Book

The exterior styling of the 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee progresses as you move throughout the variants. The curb weight is around the same range as the competition but It is a tad bit smaller when the length, width, and height come into play. However, It does have a commanding drive position and the outward view is fairly clear.

The standard and optional parking gizmos also help the maneuvering capabilities to an extent. The Grand Cherokee is the class leader in terms of off-road capabilities. The higher trims get adjustable air suspension, underbody skid plates, and bigger 20-inch wheels to assist the Grand Cherokee in its off-road adventures.

  • 17-20-inch alloy wheels
  • Rear roofline spoiler
  • Black grille w/ chrome accents
  • Black window trim
  • LED DRLs & taillights

Safety
8.6/10

Unfortunately, the only active safety feature that comes standard is blind-spot monitoring- CarAndDriver

The 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee scored a 5-star rating for 4WD models while RWD models received 4 stars. It also fared 'Good' in almost all the sectors when tested by the IIHS. However, It had a major hiccup in the front side overlap test where it fared 'Marginal' according to the crash tests.

There is a long list of safety features which consist of both active safety systems and passive safety systems working in synergy to keep the occupants safe. However, only two safety features are standard which is its main drawback. The optional safety features are available on higher trims. These features include:

  • Forward collision warning
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Lane departure warning
  • Lane keep assist
  • Hands-free park assist
  • Rearview camera
  • Rear parking sensors
  • Blind-spot monitoring
  • Rear cross-traffic alert

Competition
8.0/10

2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee vs 2018 Nissan Murano

The Nissan Murano is a decent choice in the midsize SUV segment. It is known for its pleasant ride quality and good fuel economy. The interior is roomy and it also offers user-friendly tech features. However, its cargo capacity is subpar while the number of safety features on offer is also limited.

2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee vs 2018 Ford Edge

The Ford Edge does not offer the grunt of the V6 and V8 but its lively handling and good gas mileage from its capable engines will keep you happy. Its cabin doesn't feel upscale but it is roomy and practical. Compared to the Grand Cherokee, it has also earned good safety scores.

2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee vs 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport

The Hyundai Santa Fe Sport is a top competitor in this segment. Most buyers are satisfied with its intuitive tech features and potent engines. However, the Grand Cherokee has an edge when it comes to driving dynamics, a lineup of powerful engines, and towing heavy items.

Final Verdict
8.0/10

The 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee is a fairly competitive vehicle in the segment. It has almost 10 variants on offer and one of them is bound to suit you. The Uconnect infotainment system is truly awesome, its refinement truly nails the competition down to the ground in this sector. Barring a few hiccups such as the sub-par boot space and a poor frontal crash test result, the car offers a fair value for money for a $30,000- $35,000 vehicle. The Jeep stables have reared a very competitive racehorse indeed.
