  • Feature packed

Cons

Pricing and Features
8.0/10

The 2018 Land Rover Discovery is a full-fledged luxury offering complete with oodles of creature comforts to keep the occupants submerged in opulence while the vehicle triumphs over outside elements. All these features do push the Discovery's price tag to around $54,090 but it’s a car that demands all the bells and whistles the bloated price tag brings.

Engine and Performance
8.0/10

The mid-table HSE engine with the V6 engine is probably the better family SUV that you can take off-road with confidence. The bigger wheels certainly add to the overall appeal and the extra features that the trims sports are something that the new Discovery yearns for. The list of engines on the Discovery includes a 3.0L Petrol engine good for 340 hp, a 3.0L diesel engine with 254bhp, and a 2.0L turbo petrol with 237 hp. The V6 pair does a wonderful job of tugging around the heavy mass of the vehicle with grace. The 2.0L engine, however, feels too stressed most of the time, and even then the momentum generated doesn't feel sufficient.

On paper with rivals, the Land Rover Discovery and its competitors share more or less the same power outputs and 8-Speed Automatic transmission. But when it comes to torque, the Discovery has the most at 443 lb-ft followed by the Audi Q7 with 273 lb-ft of torque and at third place the XC90 with 258 lb-ft.

2018 Land Rover Discovery Acceleration

Acceleration on the Discovery Sports is exciting yet composed even if you put the pedal to the metal. The engine does its best to make less noise but the vibrations can still be felt inside the cabin and even more so on the steering wheel. The acceleration is not too far from something one would expect out of a 3 ton SUV.

On a 0-60 mph run, however, the Discovery posts a time of 8.1 sec which makes it much slower than all of its competitors namely the Volvo XC90 which does the sprint in 6.4 sec, and the Audi Q7 which does the same in a segment-best 5.7 sec.

How well does the 2018 Land Rover Discovery handle?

Complete with its optional air ride suspension, the car feels supple and planted on roads. It devours bad patches of the road with great ease and even the body roll which the Discovery has been synonymous with has been curtailed to a great extent. The car never gets droopy over sharp turns at a modest speed. The XXL size, however, does make it feel like you're lugging a long load all the time.

Go over a sharp turn at good speeds and the vehicle will remind you of its size and heft in a subtle manner. On-road dynamics are not exactly the segment-best compared to rivals. But, off-roading in something that the range rover has established itself with and none of its rivals can displace it.

2018 Land Rover Discovery Braking Performance

The brakes on the 2018 Land Rover Discovery sports a 14.2-inch rotor in the front and a 13.8-inch rotor in the rear. The car never feels out of control even on the most generous application of the brake pedal but there's no denying that the shift of momentum is pretty unsettling for the passengers especially when the car is full.

How much can the 2018 Land Rover Discovery tow?

With a towing capacity of 7716 lbs, the Land Rover Discovery is the king of the segment with its best in class towing capacity. The Audi Q7 follows the Discovery’s footsteps with a towing capacity of 7700-lbs which is only 16-lbs less than the Land Rover. But the Volvo XC90 fails terribly in this aspect and does not come near to any of the rivals.

Interior
7.5/10

Due to its tall boy design, there is plenty of headroom available for everyone in the cabin which does its best but fails to hide the fact that front legroom could've used a slight bump to be in accordance with large headroom.

The seats, however, are one of the better ones in the segment. Complete with leather surfaces, memory options, heating, and ventilation the seats are enough to put a smile on the face of future buyers.

  • Steering mounted controls
  • Party openable panoramic sunroof
  • Leather upholstery
  • Heated and ventilated seats

2018 Land Rover Discovery Infotainment System

A 10-inch infotainment screen is common on all trims of the Land Rover Discovery. The screen looks grand in appearance due to its rich color and brightness. The MMI however, fails to impress due to its laggy nature, touches take more than enough time to register sometimes and menu change animation is slow as well.

Modern connectivity features such as Android Connect and Apple CarPlay are also missing on the Discovery. Although buyers are bound to get used to it in due time, the Discovery does lag behind in terms of infotainment usability.

  • 10-inch screen
  • Land Rover Enhanced Sound System 250W with 10 Speakers
  • Meridian sound system
  • Android Auto and Apple CarPlay Integration

2018 Land Rover Discovery Cargo Capacity

With its boxy origins, the Land Rover Discovery has never been short on cargo capacity. The boot is big enough to swallow luggage for the whole family on a long journey or a trip to the airport.

The boot lip angles are well thought out to enhance the ease of loading luggage while the power tailgate is a welcome feature as well.

Exterior
7.1/10

There's no denying that the Land Rover Discovery is a huge vehicle with a substantial curb weight of 4916 lbs. With its segment’s largest width of 81.6 inches or class-leading height of 73 inches, the Discovery never tries to hide away from its XXL image.

The big 5 spoke wheels add to the character of the car. The blackened exterior panels on the better-equipped variants go a long way in enhancing the overall appearance as well.

  • Discovery moniker on the front
  • Blackened Honeycomb grill
  • Auto folding mirrors

Competition
6.0/10

Land Rover Discovery Vs. Audi Q7

The Audi Q7 is a true German SUV with a solid and sturdy build. The exterior bathes in subtlety and the interior boasts clean and well laid out patterns. The seating is a little low slung according to SUV standards which may make it feel like an estate. The infotainment is easy to use and fluid in its operation and general interior Audi signature goodies like the Virtual Cockpit are pretty as well as functional.

However, the Audi Q7 is not a utilitarian car at all. The boot room is compromised to a large extent which may come in as a surprise due to the large overhang at the back. The off-road ability is largely limited as well. It fights hards to make sense but is unable to beat the Land Rover Discovery

Land Rover Discovery Vs. Volvo XC90

The Volvo XC90, took the game by storm when it was launched. The interior is a breath of fresh air and is something different from the German monotony. The inline 4 cylinder engine is appropriately powerful for the SUV and does not feel too stressed at any time. The third-row seating is generous as well.

The off-roading segment is where the XC90 stutters while the Discovery sails away smoothly. The boot space is generous as well but it's not utilitarian enough to beat the Land Rover. If you want a more passenger-oriented SUV, the XC90 is the weapon of choice. Otherwise, the Land Rover Discovery is better than the XC90.

Final Verdict

The Land Rover Discovery in its 2018 iteration might irk many of its followers with the out-of-the-box styling especially in the rear but none can hide away from the fact that the new Discovery is now better than it has ever been. The level of luxury on the inside that it now holds makes it par with the rivals which put its right back in the game. Its off-road ability still manages to be unparalleled and so does its overall utility. The 2018 Land Rover Discovery is a great family SUV that can take you where few vehicles can. Overall, it's something that buyers in the segment simply can't ignore.
