Overall Rating
Mercedes has been a pioneer in manufacturing luxury vehicle and they decided to step in the commercial department with Metris Cargo van in 2016. Already populated with a lot of legendary van-makers, this segment promised a neck-to-neck competition.
What would you think if we said that it is not only the passenger car segment Mercedes-Benz has been revolutionizing with its affluence? Perhaps many of us are aware that this German trademark has a lot of busses and trucks on the roads, but there is one more category that has its influence. Yes, Mercedes has provided a way to troubleshoot the problem of urban goods transportation in the form of the Metris, a sibling to the well known Sprinter cargo van.
Evidently, Metris has been in the market for quite some time now but has not seen many takers due to its heavy price tag. However, Mercedes has its own reasons to present it extravagantly. Although a commercial vehicle, the Metris is the very upmarket automobile you would expect from Mercedes-Benz. How far this takes the brand is interesting since this segment is already populated with a lot of legendary van-makers, and hence promises a neck-to-neck competition.
If heaving cargo is the only reason that makes you want to buy Metris, then the worker cargo Plus is the option to go. The cargo version is loaded with some features that are not really required for a cargo van.

The 2018 Mercedes's Metris cargo minivan is available in only one trim and starts at a price tag of $29,995. It inherits all the mechanical expertise from Mercedes-Benz while maintaining the utilitarian robustness of a van. With that price, the Metris packs a lot of contemporary driver aids and pleasant and comfortable ride characteristics. This brings it down to a value-for-money franchise. Despite these intricacies, the van is tailor-made for hauling cargo and there are no features to make you comfortable.

The new Mercedes-Benz Metris Cargo Van is equipped with a 2.0L in-line engine which is available in both trims and there are no other engine options available. This might be a small engine for a cargo van but it can still generate 208hp of power and 258ft-lbs of torque which is pretty impressive for a 2.0L engine.

The Metris Cargo is equipped with a 7-speed transmission which feels smooth and refined. Ford Transit being the closest rival to Metris comes equipped with a much more clunky CVT transmission. Germans know how to churn out every drop of power from an engine and they did a satisfying job with that.
We now have an idea how efficient Germans are in utilizing every click of power and torque, this efficiency makes this minivan quick. The Metris cargo takes 7.9sec to reach the 60mph mark and this figure makes it the fastest cargo van in this segment. However, at the end of the day, it is a van, hence one cannot expect a sudden burst of power from its engine.

The Nissan NV is the lightest in this segment and offering much more utilities is slow and tardy. It takes exactly 10.0secs to reach the 60mph mark. NV was slowed down not because of its weight but because of its much weaker engine.
Weighing 4,222lbs, this weight carrier is fitted with 11.8inches front brakes which perform their job of stopping this heavy vehicle with efficiency. Metris can bring itself to a halt from 60mph in just 119ft. of tarmac, which is impressive for a cargo van. The pedal feels mechanically very sound in its operation as there are no vibrations of kick-backs during sudden actuation.

The Nissan NV cargo is fitted with much smaller brake pads which are not very rewarding for a cargo van. NV did lose some weight but with smaller brake pads it brings itself to a halt from 60mph in a whopping distance of 137ft. Ford Transit is the lightest vehicle in this segment.
Cargo vans should be fuel-efficient as they are a fleet of worker bees and they should be easy to maintain. There are many ways the fuel efficiency of a van can be increased but making an engine that can withstand higher octane fuel is not one of them. Metris requires premium fuel and that makes this vehicle pretty expensive to run.

The Metris is fueled by premium fuel, this does carry some good news. The increased performance with better fuel economy is one of those advantages. Metris gulps a gallon of gasoline and runs 21miles in city driving conditions. Whereas, on highway driving conditions, Metris can gulp 24miles in one gallon.
The Metris is easily the top performer in its class, with a strong engine, a smooth-shifting transmission, and impressive brakes. It handles well, too. The engine, to start with is very brisk and driving around with the cabin stuffed feels close to spirited all the time. Take out the cargo and the Metris zips through the roads like any passenger car. To add to the feel, the seven-speed automatic offers Comfort, Eco, and Manual shift modes, just like you would find in a car traveling alongside you. Overall, the engine is responsive, and the transmission downshifts quickly to help slow the van smoothly to a stop.
The precise steering imbues this van with some nice qualities. It feels nimble around town and stable on the highway. We just wish the hard and seemingly unfinished plastic of the steering wheel was more pleasant to grip. We don't set our handling expectations very high for cargo vans like the Metris. But the Metris is far from sloppy and even somewhat fun to wheel around, which makes city driving much less of a chore. Meanwhile, the optional auto stop-start system operates smoothly in the background. Crosswinds are noticeable despite the load-adaptive stability control with Crosswind Assist.
Mercedes-Benz is a luxury car manufacturing brand and that experience reflects inside Metris as well. Well-laid buttons with an interactive climate control provide this cargo van with a car-like feel. Adding more to Metris's interiors are the cushioned arm-rests, which will make you feel comfortable.

When it comes to the front seating area, Metris offers a confined atmosphere. There are other rivals to consider while considering seating. Getting in and out of a Metris is not as difficult as its rivals, the step-in height of Metris is 18.5inches.
The 5.8inch infotainment screen is basic and provides what is needed in a cargo van, nothing more than that. The basic setup of the infotainment screen also comes packed with Bluetooth connectivity and AM/FM radio which can be soothing after a long day of hauling cargo. Some noticeable features of the van’s infotainment unit are as follows:
Cargo volume is what matters when buying a cargo van. If a manufacturer is not able to provide an ample amount of cargo volume, then there is no point in manufacturing one. Metris's rival Ford needs to understand that a cargo van needs an ample amount of cargo space, 103.9ft3 just cannot accommodate consumer's needs.

Whereas, Metris has the best-in-class cargo space, making this van a cargo van. Metris can carry up to 186.0ft3 of cargo, which is impressive. The cargo area is loaded with hundreds of hooks and joints, which secures the cargo pretty effectively.
Apart from commuting cargo, these cargo vans are also capable of towing a certain amount of load. The best-in-class towing capacity offered by the new Mercedes-Benz Metris brings out its positive face. The Metris can offer up to 5000lbs of towing capacity which is much better than what Ford Connect cargo has to offer.

Metris displays an explicit penchant for cargo hauling as much as it can carry inside it. The 5,000 lbs. of towing capacity is a big number for someone with just a 2.0L turbocharged engine. Besides, even its competitors are nowhere near those numbers on paper. In reality, well it remains a mystery.
The most handsome looking van in this segment, Mercedes spiced up the exteriors of Metris. The tortoise-shaped body provides this van with an upright stance and build. The front fascia resembles the C-class sedan and you wouldn't miss that elegance of a Merc from outside. It is the dual halogen headlamps that caught our attention with a large grille with the tri-spoke star in the middle. The side profile is very van-like if you were expecting something extraordinary. Meanwhile, the 16” steel rims are the main highlight of the exteriors.

Metris is a cargo van and cargo vans with a long wheelbase is like a boon to van owners. Metris with its 126.0in of wheelbase is one cargo van with a best-in-class wheelbase which increases the amount of cargo it can store.
Mercedes is very stringent about keeping their vehicles safe and that resulted in adding premium safety features in this mediocre van. Some of the features include stability control which keeps this unstable box in control and does let it tumble in sharp corners. IIHS & NHTSA ratings not rated. Some sophisticated features that house the Metris cargo van are as follows:
The Nissan NV200 was launched in competition with Ford and Ram as a much cheaper and reliable option. With Mercedes stomping its foot in the cargo van segment, Nissan was left behind in the race. The design might be attractive and unique but when it comes to utility, Nissan is not able to compete with its competitors. Power output, cargo space, fuel economy are the factors that keep this van out of viable options.
A cheaper option Ram is offered almost near specifications as Metris. But with a deduced price there were some cut-downs too, like cargo space and power output. With better fuel economy, the new Ram ProMaster City Van offers a better deal to consumers who are cutting down costs. Mercedes with better cargo space delivers what a cargo van should deliver.
Ford has been in the minivan market since the inception of the minivan concept. Ford knows in and out of manufacturing cargo vans, with the new Ford Transit Connect cargo this is not the case. The Connect cargo is much underpowered and can store almost half as Metris. Even the towing capacity is not up to Metris, these two factors hold the most important tag in a cargo van.
Mercedes decided to drop the bomb in the minivan sector with Metris and with it came a close-knitted competition. Brands like Ford, Ram, and Nissan were already dominating in the minivan segment, this demanded a van with unique values. Mercedes decided to put Metris in this arena, with a much smaller and lighter engine that can produce better power than the dominating competitors.
Equipped with lush interiors and safety features no other van manufacturers provide, Metris almost took over the cargo van segment. The Mercedes-Benz Metris Cargo Van consumes only premium fuel, though an impressive fuel economy for a van but the extra cost for premium fuel takes that away. The price tag maintains a rift not everyone can cross. If the budget does not bother you, Mercedes is your option here.
