Pros

  • Powerful V6 and V8 engines on offer
  • Easily configurable seats for passenger
  • Rear climate controls

Cons

  • Not a 15 seater like other rivals
  • Average fuel efficiency
  • Bouncy ride

The Nissan NV Passenger offers a good balance of power and comfort. The 4.0-liter V6 engine offers sufficient power for your daily driving requirements.

Overview

The Nissan NV Passenger Van can comfortably seat 12 passengers and still has 28.9 cu-ft. cargo space behind the 4th row. The rear seats can be easily removed to create extra cargo space. Powering the Nissan NV is a 261 hp V6 and the higher trim gets a 375 hp V8 and comes at a starting price of $35,170. The Nissan NV rivals the GMC Savana Passenger LS 2500 and the Ford Transit Passenger Van T-150 XL.

The Nissan NV Passenger Van can do 0-60 in 11 seconds and the standing quarter-mile in 18.2 seconds. This is with the 4.0 liter V6 powering the vehicle. When the 5.6-liter V8 powers the vehicle, it does the 0-60 mph sprint in 8.3 seconds and the standing quarter-mile in 16.6 seconds.

When comparing the base spec of the Nissan NV, it is the slowest of the above cars in the 0-60 sprint and standing quarter-mile time. The Ford Transit Passenger Van is the fastest with a time of 7.5 seconds and 16.1 seconds in the 0-60 and quarter-mile respectively. Then comes the GMC Savana with 8.4 seconds and 16.5 seconds.

2018 Nissan NV Passenger Van Ride and Handling

The handling and ride quality of the Nissan NV is exactly what you should expect from a giant van. Even though the ride is what you should expect from a van, at times it can get a bit bouncy when you least expect it.

The steering is light and requires a few adjustments now and then, it feels like you are driving something bigger than the van on the road. This is due to the NV sharing a platform with the Nissan Titan pick-up truck and frame on chassis build that does not help much.

2018 Nissan NV Passenger Van Braking Performance

The NV Passenger Van comes with disc brakes on all 4 wheels with 14.2-inch front rotors and 14.4-inch rear rotors. These are big brakes and make sense when the Passenger Van weighs 6,710 pounds. All the brake rotors are vented which helps in cooling quickly under repetitive braking. It also has the features of ABS, brake force distribution, and Brake Assist.

The Ford Transit Passenger does the 60 mph to 0 stopping distance in 129 feet. We expect the Nissan NV to have a similar distance because of the bigger brakes it has for its weight. If they were of similar weight we would reckon a shorter braking distance.

Fuel Economy
6.7/10

The Nissan NV Passenger Van is considered a commercial vehicle, hence the EPA does not give us rated mpg figures. However many have said the V8 variant provides around 10-12 in the city and 13-15 on the highway, the V6 variant we can only expect more. Nissan installs a 28-gallon fuel tank on the NV Passenger Van.

From the above, we know the GMC has the largest fuel tank, then comes the Nissan and the Ford, but when it comes to range, we reckon the NV will have more than the GMC Savana and not too far off the Ford Transit.

Interior
9.0/10

The Nissan NV Passenger Van can seat up to 12-passengers across 4 rows comfortably. Nissan claims there are more than 324 seating configurations. The seats get upgrades only in the SV and SL trim, where the driver has an 8-way adjustable seat with the SL adding the heating feature to it.

The interior upholstery is more functional than stylish and this shows with the material on the base S and SV trims having a combination of cloth and vinyl water repellent seats, the SL trim getting leather seats. For additional comfort, there is air conditioning and heating for the entire van with individual overhead vents for each passenger, the SV and SL trims get dual-zone climate control and there are plenty of bottle holders and cup holders in the van.

The Nissan NV scores full marks in terms of cargo capacity. Removing the rear seats reveals the 218.9 cu.-ft. cargo area which can be easily accessed from the sliding doors or the 243 degree opening rear doors. Loading your cargo can be a bit difficult due to the higher step-in height of the cargo area.

Exterior
5.6/10

The NV Passenger Van shares its underpinnings with the previous generation of Titan pickup truck. It is based on the body-on-body design, which is a bit rare for this generation of vans. The visual appeal for a van is never really there and the Nissan NV Passenger Van does look like a pick-up truck from the front rather than a van. The rear doors are 50/50 opening with a 243-degree opening angle and there is privacy glass on the windows. 17” wheels with chrome-clad wheels round off the cabin.

The Nissan NV is longer than the competition, the rest of the dimensions are similar to the others. The next big difference is the weight of the Passenger Van, where it is the heaviest of the above vans weighing in at 6,710 pounds, nearly 800 pounds more than the next heaviest - GMC Savana.

Safety
9.0/10

The IIHS and the NHTSA are yet to rate the new Nissan NV Passenger Van. However, Nissan has added a lot of safety features to the NV Passenger Van to keep the occupants safe. Some of these safety features are:

  • Driver and front passenger dual-stage supplemental front airbags
  • Driver and front passenger seat-mounted side-impact supplemental airbags
  • Hood-buckling creases and safety stops
  • Vehicle dynamic control (VDC) with a traction control system (TCS)
  • Roof-mounted curtain side-impact supplemental airbags with rollover sensor for rollover head protection for all outboard passengers
  • Latch system (lower anchor and tethers for children)
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring system
  • Breakaway engine mounts.

Competition
7.0/10

Nissan NV Passenger Van Vs. Ford Transit Passenger Van

The Ford Transit Passenger Van is powered by a 3.7-liter V6 engine that is tuned for 275 hp at 6000 rpm. The peak torque of 260 lb-ft is available at 4000 rpm. Even with a lower engine displacement, Ford manages to extract more power. The Ford Transit is priced similar to the Nissan NV. The NV can carry 12 passengers while the Transit can manage a humble 8.

Nissan NV Passenger Van Vs. GMC Savana Passenger Van

The GMC Savana Passenger Van offers more power and torque with its bigger 4.3-liter V6 engine and is lighter than the Nissan NV. As a bonus, the Savana costs less than the Nissan NV. However, the Savana has not seen many updates since it first started on the market and features an outdated style. Making the Nissan NV passenger the winner in this battle

Final Verdict
7.5/10

The 2018 Nissan NV Passenger Van offers a good balance of power and comfort. The 4.0-liter V6 engine offers sufficient power for your daily driving requirements. The more powerful 5.6-liter V8 engine is also offered as an option for the S and SV trims. The passenger is offered in a flexible 12 seater configuration. Depending upon your requirement, the rear seats can be easily removed to make way for more cargo and if that is not enough it can tow up to 6,200 pounds on the V6 and 8,700 pounds when it comes with the V8 adding to its versatility.
