About 2018 Nissan NV200

3.5

Overall Rating

The 131hp powerhouse coupled with CVT automatic transmission is plenty for a compact cargo van. Whether it is an everyday job or a long way of cargo deliveries, you won't find yourself complaining about aches and pulled back muscles.

The Nissan NV200 Cargo is a compact cargo van. It looks small outside but way more spacious inside. The van looks calm and stylish from the outside as its smooth curves, headlights, aerodynamic body profile, and Nissan standard grille compliments its looks. The cargo compartment is pretty spacious as well. For a cargo van, it has a very versatile spacious cabin that takes care of the driver's comfort and needs. Adequately, the van has been through 530,000 miles of reliability road testing and 6,600 quality and durability testing. Nissan also provides several options for space and comforts with packages and trims as well.

Regardless of the way one would choose to use it, we recommend you to go with the SV trim here. The primary reason being the difference in features awarded with the same as compared to the more humble S trim. Mind you, the differences are not limited to aesthetics here, but extend towards sophistication of driver assistance technologies as well as upgradation of creature comforts in the cabin. The powertrain, on the contrary, will be shared between the models.

2018 Nissan NV200 Review

Pros

  • Bigger passenger Space
  • Fuel Economy
  • Comfortable Cabin

Cons

  • Weak Engine
  • Less Towing Capacity

The 131hp powerhouse coupled with CVT automatic transmission is plenty for a compact cargo van. Whether it is an everyday job or a long way of cargo deliveries, you won't find yourself complaining about aches and pulled back muscles.

Overview

Pricing and Features
9.0/10

The Nissan NV 200 has an additional variant NV 200 SV with the standard variant NV 200 S. The SV variant cost only $1000 extra. Unlike other brands, Nissan has equipped both S and SV variants with different features for better versatility in different parts of the world. The SV has the same powerhouse, dimension, fuel efficiency, towing capacity, transmission, comfort, and onboard electronics.

Now moving on to the differences, the SV variant has some different exterior features, drive assist features as well as infotainment features than the standard one. The optional features provided by Nissan are also different for both S and SV variants.

We Recommend:

Regardless of the way one would choose to use it, we recommend you to go with the SV trim here. The primary reason being the difference in features awarded with the same as compared to the more humble S trim. Mind you, the differences are not limited to aesthetics here, but extend towards sophistication of driver assistance technologies as well as upgradation of creature comforts in the cabin. The powertrain, on the contrary, will be shared between the models.

Engine and Performance
5.6/10

The NV 200 has a less powerful but efficient engine. Keeping the power requirements as per the vehicle’s caliber in mind, Nissan has equipped the 200 with a 131hp 2.0L I4 engine coupled with CVT automatic transmission. The van produces 139 lb.-ft. at the rate of 4800 rpm. This much power is enough to get the job done, well it might disappoint you while coming off the stoplights.

The NV200 S gets easily defeated by its competitors as they all feature a more powerful engine as well as a bigger price tag. Mercedes-Benz Metris leads the competition Ram ProMaster City and Ford Transit. Apart from that, the Mercedes-Benz Metris produces 258 lb.-ft. of torque at a mere 1250 rpm.

2018 Nissan NV200 Cargo Van Acceleration

For a cargo van, talking about acceleration is a bit unusual, but the Nissan gets from 0-60 mph is 10 sec while there is no data on the quarter-mile margin. Yet again for a cargo van that is impressive as well.

The NV 200 has a CO2 emission of 7.1, the least in the class. As for the competition, there is no data on other competitors so we can't compare it. But considering the engine and the torque produced, it is clear that the Mercedes-Benz Metris will outperform other vans in this segment.

2018 Nissan NV200 Cargo Van Ride and Handling

The Nissan NV 200 utilizes a speed-sensitive electric power steering with CVT automatic transmission. This makes driving it in stop and go traffic more comfortable. The ride dynamics is not the best but for a cargo van but with its least in segment price tag, you won't be complaining a lot. The cargo van is equipped with standard Vehicle Dynamic Control for safety in cases of oversteering or understeering.

The lack of power may not bother you in the city’s traffic but on the highway, with a fully loaded NV, you will get the backdrop of the same. Also, the matchbox design makes the NV extremely vulnerable to crosswinds. Around the corner, you will sense a lot of body roll, so it's recommended to not jab the pedal before a turn. The high sense of gravity makes handling even worse. The lack of steering wheel adjustment turns long routes into a taxing situation for long drivers. The absence of proper seat adjustment makes creature comfort a remote concept.

2018 Nissan NV200 Cargo Van Braking

The Nissan NV 200 is featured with an advanced braking system for safer driving. Nissan has also added several brake assist features. The 11.1-inch front ventilated disc brakes and 9.0 inch rear drum brakes get the vehicle from 60-0 mph in only 137 ft. That is quite impressive. Features like Electronic Brake-force Distribution, Anti-Lock Braking System, and Brake Assist are essential for improving the safety of the driver and passenger.

Turns out the NV200 is not the worst of vans when it comes to emergency power cuts. There is some element of thrift in the brakes since they seem substantially small for a van its size. Perhaps they may work exceptionally well with an empty compartment, but when loaded, it will be pretty hard to break the momentum.

Fuel Economy
6.8/10

The Nissan cargo van has the best in class mileage one can get from a cargo van thanks to its enhanced fuel-efficient engine. This van offers average fuel efficiency of 24/26 mpg in the city and highway, respectively.

Comparatively, the Nissan produces more miles per gallon than any of its arch-rivals. That being said, it is only possible because there is not much of a difference between the city and highway mileage of the van. On the other hand, vans like Ford Transit offer a very low MPG figure in urban areas and hence have a lower combined number of miles per gallon.

Interior
7.1/10

The Nissan NV's interior is highly functional, with little nooks and crannies to store stuff, including a handy pull-out drawer under the driver's seat. The gauges and controls are straightforward and easy to use. Just keep in mind it's a utilitarian cabin with minimal luxury touches to be found.

Coming to seating and interiors, the 200 S offers a very spacious and comfortable single-row cabin that can accommodate 2 people. This van features a 6-way manually adjustable driver seat with a foldable 4-way manual passenger seat. A seatback tray table can be accessed after folding the passenger seat.

  • Pre-wiring for telematics uplifting
  • Cargo area work-light
  • Rear Sonar System
  • Rear-View Monitor
  • Upper Dash-Board Storage Cabin
  • Passenger under Seat slide-out storage tray

2018 Nissan NV200 Cargo Van Infotainment System

The NV 200 Cargo has a standard infotainment system just like other vehicles in this segment. It has a 5-inch color display with a standard stereo system. Features like Android Auto/Apple CarPlay or SiriusXM radio are not even available. In the end, it's a cargo van and not a luxury car so we shouldn't expect much.

  • 5.0-inch Display
  • AM/FM/CD Audio System
  • Radio Data System
  • MP3 CD Playback Capability
  • Auxiliary Audio Input Jack
  • USB Port
  • To Speaker

2018 Nissan NV200 Cargo Van Cargo Capacity

The Nissan NV 200 Cargo S is all about cargo. This van has loads of efficient cargo space. It features 122.7 cubic feet of cargo space and has 3 doors for easier cargo access. The cargo area work-light is there for easy use at night. It has a flat and wide cargo floor to fit heavier objects or a lot of boxes.

6.7/10

The Nissan NV200 has a standard body design as it was before with few minor changes. It has a very compact design that increases mobility and parking in narrow lanes. Smooth curves, slant bonnet, silver-painted standard grille, and halogen lights give it a very calm but stylish look.

The dual sliding doors offer easy access inside.

Nissan NV200 Cargo Van Vs. Ram ProMaster City

The Ram ProMaster City is powered by a turbocharged inline-four engine that churns out 178 horsepower. It is more powerful than the NV200. The cargo space on offer is 131.7 cu-ft. is also more than the NV200. The Ram ProMaster commands a price tag of $23,995 which is dearer than NV200 by $2095.

Nissan NV200 Cargo Van Vs. Ford Transit Connect Cargo

The Ford Transit Connect Cargo Van is also a compact cargo van. Priced at $23,215 this vehicle features a 169 hp powerhouse with a 6-speed automatic transmission. It has a very upmarket exterior design. This van beats Nissan in power and performance but has less cargo space and fuel efficiency. It has almost the same dimension as the Nissan NV 200 but nothing much to overpower Nissan.

The additional power added a little extra money and that all.

Nissan NV200 Cargo Van Vs. Mercedes-Benz Metris Cargo

The Mercedes-Benz Metris Cargo Van is the most powerful as well as the most costly van in this class. It has a 208 hp powerhouse with a 7-speed automatic and a price tag of $29,950. It is the least fuel-efficient and that is for its drawback. This van offers a massive 183.0 cubic foot of cargo space with 5000 lbs. of towing capacity which gives it the upper hand in the whole class. Well, the price gap of $8000 is a different story.

Final Verdict

The 2018 Nissan NV 200 S Cargo Van is an ideal cargo van. It is affordable, fuel-efficient, comfortable, and safe as well. For the competition, it stands up to its name and competes with confidence. There are not many upgrades and you won't find many features or options on it. It sure does not offer anything extra but it is reliable and after years of use you will still be satisfied.
