About 2018 Nissan Versa

3.4

Overall Rating

That said, cost-cutting measures are obvious, and if that concerns you, remember that the slightly pricier Toyota Yaris is available to cater to those needs. It offers a better interior and a far more engaging driving experience. If you can get a hatchback, the Honda Fit is nearly unbeatable with the slightly higher asking price. Still, the Versa offers a new car warranty (3-years, 36,000 miles) for the old car price.

If you have to ask, “Which is the cheapest car currently on sale in America?”, this is it – the 2018 Nissan Versa sedan. It has a starting price of $12,995 including destination. The sedan offers an exceptionally roomy interior for the segment along with a cavernous boot.

While the higher trims offer plenty of desirable amenities, it's important to not get carried away as prices of higher trims are awfully close to much better products. Stick with the base Versa S, and you will still get absolutely essential features for the price.

2018 Nissan Versa Review

Pros

  • New car warranty for old car price
  • Extremely spacious interior and boot
  • Quiet interior and comfortable ride
  • Spacious second row of seats

Cons

  • Base Manual is thirsty
  • Efficient CVT is pricey
  • Subpar fit and finish
  • Safety features are not that great when compared to rivals

That said, cost-cutting measures are obvious, and if that concerns you, remember that the slightly pricier Toyota Yaris is available to cater to those needs. It offers a better interior and a far more engaging driving experience. If you can get a hatchback, the Honda Fit is nearly unbeatable with the slightly higher asking price. Pricing and Features
9.0/10

The base Nissan Versa S with the 5-speed manual has a price tag of $11,990. Even at this bare bottom price, you do get a 4-speaker audio system and Bluetooth hands-free phone system. While the CVT-equipped Versa S Plus is more efficient, it's significantly costlier at $14,250.

The SV is the top-end trim for the 2018 Nissan Versa. It comes with features like remote keyless entry, power windows, door locks, and premium cloth upholstery. There is a special edition package too. This special package includes a leather-wrapped steering wheel, alloy wheels, satellite radio, Bluetooth audio streaming.

Engine and Performance
6.4/10

Nissan Versa will not set your pulse racing the moment you fire the engine up or when you stomp on the gas pedal. However, the Versa is adept at the job of transporting people and their luggage comfortably within the city. Even on interstate trips, you will find the power to be sufficient for decent cruising speeds, and the cushy suspension will impress on bad roads.

However, don't expect anything remotely exciting. The sedan gets a 1.6L inline-4 engine developing 109 hp and 107 lb-ft of torque.

Its power output is adequate for most people, and freeway overtakes can be executed with little planning. The manual transmission slaps a significant fuel efficiency penalty and does little to impart fun on a commute. The optional CVT is effortless and produces excellent fuel economy too. But again, the CVT comes at a cost and robs the value proposition of the Versa.

Acceleration

Nissan Versa is no dragster. Its humble little 1.6L engine feeds power to the front wheels exclusively via a 5-speed manual or a CVT. The manual transmission works just fine, but the CVT hesitates to put down the power as and when required.

Especially when you need instant move on. In true CVT fashion, it drones endlessly and lags the engine's performance.

The Nissan Versa is built to a price and 0-60 mph figures are the last thing Nissan engineers care about in this sedan. That said,0-60 mph time of 10 seconds is not especially bad among the compact cars here. The fastest car compared here is the Toyota Yaris iA and it can do 0-60 mph in 8.7 seconds.

Handling

Nissan Versa has one thing that impresses the ride and handling department the most - the cushy suspension. The soft springs help it to absorb most of the road's imperfections with aplomb and gives the occupants a pleasant ride. Unfortunately, the soft suspension eliminates any scope of driving enjoyment.

There is a ton of body roll through corners, and the steering never inspires any confidence at high speeds as it is super light and feels vague and artificial. However, within the city, the light steering and tight turning radius make the car pleasantly manageable.

Braking Performance

Like every other bit, the brakes of the Versa are built to a price. The sedan gets basic drum brakes on the rear wheels to keep the costs in check, and the pedal response does not inspire much confidence. Still, it can stop from 60 mph to a respectable 129 feet.

Toyota Yaris felt strong and responsive under hard braking thanks to low curb weight. The sub-compact sedan felt chuckable and it changed directions cleanly. Nissan Versa's performance was strictly average in comparison. Holding the last spot on the segment is Mitsubishi Mirage with a stopping distance of 147ft.

Fuel Economy
8.4/10

The base Nissan Versa with the 5-speed manual delivers 27 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway. These numbers will be respectable in larger cars, but among subcompact cars, it's disappointing. While a CVT delivering truly impressive 31 mpg in the city and 39 mpg on the highway is available, it's significantly more costly.

Mitsubishi Mirage is powered by a puny little three-cylinder engine. The motor is small and it is tuned for efficiency and thus returns some of the highest mpg figures of the segment and of the market altogether. With that said, Toyota Yaris is a better all-around product as it gets a bigger fuel tank and similar efficiency figures with a much better performance.

Interior
7.3/10

The Nissan Versa's interior has one thing in abundance - space. However, it is built to a price and hence compromises are obvious in terms of build quality. Also, basic equipment like the power window and split rear seats are only available in the top Versa SV trim. That said, the cabin is surprisingly silent and that combines with the spaciousness and cushy suspension to give you a comfortable experience.

The Nissan Versa has a generation-old push-button stereo as standard that will surely disappoint the geek within you, but if you value simplicity, it's for you. If you want the available 5-inch touchscreen infotainment system, you have to opt for the Versa SV trim with a special edition package. Bluetooth streaming is standard across the lineup.

It boasts one of the most spacious interiors among subcompact cars. While the front seats match the competition in terms of legroom and headroom, the rear seats beat them outright with massive 37-inch legroom. This means that two 6-footers can comfortably sit behind one another. However, the height-adjustable driver's seat is only available in the top Versa SV trim. The steering wheel does not telescope either making finding a good driving position difficult.

Cargo Space

Along with the spacious rear seats, the Versa also has one of the largest trunks among subcompact cars at 14.9 cubic feet. While the available 60/40 split rear seats offer great flexibility, it's only available in the pricey Versa SV to trim reducing its appeal.

The boot behind the rear seats of the Versa is pretty generous for the size of the car. The Chevy Sonic matches the Versa in terms of cargo capacity on paper, but Nissan Versa has a much boxer boot in comparison, which makes it easy to load and unload stuff. Once again, the Mitsubishi fails to impress with its 12.3cu-ft of cargo space.

Infotainment

The infotainment system happens to be the Nissan Versa’s weakest spot. It gets a 7-inch touchscreen system with AM/FM radio equipped in the base trim. USB ports are provided for easy charging, and there is an auxiliary input jack for playing your media devices.

The base model does lack the presence of Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, or SiriusXM, but the SV trim has it all. Some of the infotainment features of the 2018 Nissan Versa are:

  • AM/FM Radio
  • Bluetooth
  • USB Port
  • Auxiliary Input
  • Satellite Radio
  • MP3 Player
  • Android Auto
  • Apple CarPlay

Exterior
5.4/10

The Nissan Versa still wears the old Nissan design theme and does not get the modern Nissan V-motion design language. That means the sedan draws inspiration from the old Nissan Sentra rather than the current 2018 model. The design is nothing to write about.

It looks awfully big from the front, thanks to a ginormous chrome slatted grille coupled with exaggerated headlamps. Its wheelbase is considerably longer than other subcompacts at 102.4 inches, which opens up a lot of space on the inside to stretch and get comfy.

Moreover, large rear doors ensure getting in and out is easy, and installing a child seat won't be a chore either. While all the lower trims get black door handles, the Versa SV and SV special edition sport chrome finish door handles. Versa SV special edition is also the only Versa to get fog lamps.

Safety
8.1/10

The car has been the most affordable and popular car in the American market, so safety is a section that the company always keeps under the limelight. The NHTSA has evaluated the car and has given quite a good score. It has achieved an overall 5-star rating for its safety. Even in the tests conducted by the IIHS, the Nissan Versa has received Good ratings in the individual sections. Although the Versa has demerits, it does come with the peace-of-mind of the new car warranty. Some of the safety features on offer are:

  • Nissan Advanced Airbag System
  • Driver and front-passenger seat-mounted side-impact supplemental airbags
  • Zone Body construction with front and rear crumple zones
  • Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) with Traction Control System (TCS)
  • Airbags, dual-stage, frontal, driver and right-front passenger includes Passenger Sensing System
  • Door locks, rear child security
  • Pipe-style steel side-door guard beams
  • LATCH system (Lower Anchors and Top tethers for Children), for child safety seats
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System
  • Anti-lock braking system
  • Electronic Brake Force Distribution
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • High beam Assist

Competition
6.0/10

Nissan Versa vs Toyota Yaris

Toyota Yaris is essentially a rebadged Mazda and owing to that, it will entertain you on the commute and brings superbly built interiors that look far more upscale than the Versa. However, Yaris has tight rear seats, and its trunk is also not as spacious as the Versa.

More importantly, the Yaris brings more quality and driving engagement for a price while Versa offers a low cost of ownership.

Nissan Versa vs Chevrolet Sonic

The Chevy Sonic may be a subcompact car but is equipped better and comes out as a more expensive compact car. Sonic also comes with an optional turbocharged engine. Inside, it's spacious and packs a large boot too.

However, all these come at a price significantly higher than the Versa.

Nissan Versa vs Mitsubishi Mirage

With 33 mpg in the city and 40 on the highway, the Mirage is the most efficient non-hybrid car. However, with just 78 hp, it's also one of the slowest. Add harsh ride and noisy transmission to the mix, and you have a car that's hard to recommend.

The exceptional warranty does brighten things, but Versa is a better choice for the price.

Final Verdict

Despite being the most affordable car currently on sale, the Nissan Versa offers an exceptionally roomy interior and trunk. This combined with a soft suspension and excellent sound deadening to make the Versa a truly comfortable family car. However, an efficient CVT option should have been available at a lower price. If you want to run the Nissan Versa as a fleet car or you are on a tight budget and have to have a new car, the Nissan Versa makes sense.
