2018 Tesla Model X electric Review

Tesla model X is indeed a worthy sports utility vehicle with an outstanding performance. This Vehicle is capable of delivering at least 200 miles of its rated ranges.

The Tesla Model X is a car full of innovation, clever trickery, and sheer engineering brilliance. Tesla’s approach to developing the Model X was simple. They made sure of what a person might need in an SUV and just went ahead and built a near-perfect one. Starting at $79,500, the 2018 Tesla Model X is an expensive vehicle that has more of everything to offer compared to other SUVs in its class.

The 2018 Tesla Model X comes with the promise of unparalleled electric range, self-driving capabilities, comfort, latest technology, and over-the-air updates that keep improving the vehicle. The most eye-catching feature of the Model X is its Falcon Doors that replace the monotonous tradition of side-hinged rear doors. The variants also differ now, as the 75 and the 90 are no longer available, which makes way for just the three base variants.

The Tesla Model X comes in three trims. The trims have been simplified to make purchases easier based on requirements. The Model X was traditionally offered in 5 different trims, which have been dropped down to just 3.

The 75D comes with a 75-kilowatt-hour battery pack, while the 100D has a 100-kWh pack. The top-of-the-line P100D is also offered with a 100-kilowatt-hour pack but comes with significantly more powerful motors. The base trim is priced at $79,500 and goes up to $140,000 for the top-end trim. Tesla has equipped the Model X SUV pretty heavily from the base trim itself, but there are always pricier trims to go for.

2018 Tesla Model X Buying Advice

We recommend Tesla Model X buyers sticking with the base trim. It has a shorter range than the higher trims, but only by a margin of 60 miles. It's also available with pretty much every feature you can get in higher trims, yet it costs much less than they do. In other words, you can add several features to the Model X 75D and still pay less than you would for one of the higher trims.

Engine and Performance
9.2/10

Powered by a 75 kWh lithium-ion battery pack under the cabin floor and an electric motor on each axle, the 2018 Tesla Model X offers incredible value in terms of driving refinement and electric mileage. The 75D offers a dual-motor setup with a combined output of 259 hp. The high-performance P100D replaces the rear motor with a vastly more powerful one, taking the power figure up to 518 horsepower. Speed is controlled via a liquid-cooled Variable frequency Drive and power is sent through a single-speed fixed gear ratio on both axles.

When it comes to acceleration, nothing comes close to an electric car. The Tesla Model X catapults itself from 0-60 miles an hour in under 5 seconds, with the P100D managing to get to the same speed in about 3.2 seconds. The bonkers acceleration is further supported by the Model X’s quarter-mile time, which the electric family-hauler manages to complete in an earth-shattering 11.2 seconds. While the Model X has face-melting performance figures, the SUV doesn’t fare well in terms of braking, offering a stopping distance of 152 feet.

The 2018 Tesla Model X manages to wipe out its competition, being the quickest to reach 60 miles an hour and the first one across the quarter-mile mark. The 2018 Jaguar I-Pace follows the Model X closely. Among the competition, the 2018 Tesla Model X has the most power to offer, with the Jaguar I-Pace being the closest competitor.

Fuel Economy
9.4/10

The 2018 Tesla Model X delivers the highest range compared to any other electric SUV in the present-day market. While Tesla claims that the Model X can do 371 miles per charge, the vehicle has realistically delivered 325 miles per charge effortlessly. As far as charging is concerned, you can charge the Model X at your house via a standard 120-volt outlet. It will charge considerably faster with a 240-volt outlet, which one must keep in mind. Model X owners also have access to Tesla's nationwide network of Supercharger stations. Additionally, owners can get up to 400 kWh (or about 1,000 miles) of charging for free each year at the Supercharger network, with a small fee being incurred after that.

The 2018 Tesla Model X leads the pack with a staggering 325-mile range figure. While the Model X offers you the flexibility of going for a 75kWh or a 100kWh battery pack, the largest battery packs offered by the Jaguar I-Pace is a 90kWh pack.

Interior
7.0/10

The Model X seats five in its standard configuration, but you can increase capacity to six or seven with available upgrades. The cabin itself is very roomy and allows for a splendid view of the road outside. The interior materials, while not very high quality, feel good to touch. The overall interior is quite ergonomically well laid-out and feels minimal yet sufficiently equipped. The Model X offers 77.0 cubic feet of cargo space, which gets altered depending upon the seating configuration. While the Model X offers the highest cargo capacities in the class, there isn't a lot of small-item storage throughout the cabin.

Standard features include a leather-wrapped steering wheel, heated front seats, a panoramic front windshield, 12-way power-adjustable front seats, and Falcon Wing rear doors. These double-hinged doors open from the roof and feature sensors to avoid obstacles when they open. Heated rear seats and a heated steering wheel are also available, which certainly is a plus. Depending on whether you get the five-seat, six-seat, or seven-seat Model X, you'll have up to four LATCH systems for installing child seats.

The Tesla Model X comes with a compelling infotainment unit, offering class-leading tech features. The Model X infotainment comes with a gigantic 17-inch touchscreen that hosts endless apps and settings to play with. The display is phenomenal, and over-the-air updates constantly improve the user experience. Sadly, the Model X does not come with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Bluetooth audio streaming, however, is easy and seamless.

Exterior
7.3/10

The 2018 Tesla Model X has an impactful design and looks quite appealing upfront. The only thing that's missing is a front grille which can make a car look prettier, but Tesla being an electric vehicle, doesn't quite require one. The Model X’s rear doors open upwards, making it look even cooler. The car is sleek and has a low center of gravity which adds up to its safety as well.

The overall design is very subtle and minimalistic, yet the SUV features familiar-looking proportions, curves, and creases. All in all, there’s no other SUV in the market that comes close to looking like a Tesla Model X, thanks to its clean lines and refreshing, plain theme.

2018 Tesla Model X vs 2018 Jaguar I-Pace

The 2018 Jaguar I-Pace manages to give a very tight competition to the Tesla Model X. While the Tesla comes with a superior electric range and a gigantic touchscreen, the Jaguar offers unparalleled refinement. The I-Pace comes with a well-built interior with an excellent collection of materials and finishes. The overall build quality of the I-Pace actually happens to be better than the Model X.

If you’re looking to buy a smartphone on wheels, the Tesla Model X is the unquestionable choice. If you want a well-built electric vehicle with genuine character, with a small compromise on technology and range, the Jaguar I-Pace is a fantastic choice.

Final Verdict

The 2018 Tesla Model X is packed with features and technology that surpasses its competition’s equipment level by a considerable margin. The Model X is genuinely an engineering masterpiece, offering outstanding electric range and face-melting performance numbers at the same time.
