Used 2018 Toyota 86 GT for sale 

The 2018 Toyota 86 is available in three trims, the base 86 variant, the 86 GT variant, and the top of the line 86 GT Black. All the variants are powered by a naturally aspirated 2 Liter Boxer-4 engine. As the focus of the car is on the sporty driving feel, it gets a 6-speed manual gearbox.

The base trim is available for a mere 26 thousand dollars which is very low for a sports car. The other two variants offer better aerodynamics, better equipment, and both cost the same, at 28 thousand dollars. The GT, however, offers more equipment than the GT Black, which is more geared towards performance.

Buying Advice

We recommend buying the 86 GT trim. Since the GT86 provides a lot of comfort and convenience features on this trim including dual-zone automatic climate control, heated bucket seats, a smart key with push-button start, and a few more, it makes this a perfect trim to go for and can be a potential daily driver as well. 

The 2018 Toyota 86 offers the same engine as the 2017 model, a 2.0 Liter Boxer-4 that produces 205 horsepower and 156 pound-feet of torque. The engine is coupled to a 6-Speed manual gearbox that manages and directs all the power to the rear wheels. There is also the option for 6-speed automatic transmission. As is the case with most entry-level Boxer motors, the powertrain is anything but silent but that adds to the sporty driving feel of the car. The refinement levels are decent though and the transmission uses all those 205 horses quite well and sends them to the rear wheels only.

The Subaru BRZ is an 86 with a different badging and makes the same power - 205hp, as does the Honda Civic Si Coupe. The Mazda MX-5 is the least powerful making only 155 horsepower from its engine. 

2018 Toyota 86 Acceleration

The 2018 Toyota 86 does the 0-60 sprint in 6.2 seconds and the standing quarter-mile in 15-seconds. It will then continue to its top speed of 140 mph. This is not bad from a 2-liter engine. The acceleration times are just at par with the competition and given the compact size of the coupe, zooming around within the urban traffic gets really fun with this car.

The Toyota 86, Subaru BRZ, and Mazda MX-5 all reach 60mph in the same time of 6.2 seconds. Following closely is the Honda Civic Si with 6.4 seconds. In the quarter-mile times, the fastest is the Mazda MX-5 with a time of 14.8 seconds. Following this is the Subaru BRZ and Toyota 86 with a time of 15.0 seconds and then comes the Honda Civic Si with a time of 15.2 seconds. 

2018 Toyota 86 Ride and Handling 

The engineers at Toyota have managed to keep the curb weight (with a complete tank of fuel and all other fluids) under check, a smidge below 2800 pounds. Although the car isn't the featherweight people had hoped, it's still pretty light. The car handles pretty well and steers well on the curves and on the edges.

The steering response is excellent and you won't feel nervous while turning this car even at high speeds.

2018 Toyota 86 Braking and Handling

The Toyota 86 takes 120 feet to come from 60 mph to a halt. This is due to the 11.6 inch and 11.4-inch disc brakes in the front and rear respectively. The front and rear rotors are vented and this helps keep it cool under repetitive braking. 

The shortest stopping distance is from the Honda Civic Si Coupe setting a distance of 115 feet. Following this is the Toyota 86 and the Subaru BRZ with a distance of 120 feet. The Mazda Miata comes to a stop at 124 feet, the longest distance of the above cats.

The biggest advantage of having a lightweight chassis and body shell is the handsome savings on fuel bills it offers. The little Toyota can manage to run for 21 mpg in the city, 26 mpg on the highway, and a combined mpg of 24. 

The most combined range is offered by the Honda Civic Si with a combined range of 396 miles. Following this is the Mazda MX-5 offering 345 miles and then comes the Toyota 86 and the Subaru BRZ offering 316 miles combined range. 

The 2018 Toyota 86 is officially listed as a 4-seater coupe, although the rear passenger might find the space to be rather cramped for use. The rear seats are best used as extra luggage space, or for ferrying kids around. The front seat, however, offers plenty of space and supoort for the driver and front passenger.

Stepping into the car, the first thing you notice is the all-black interiors, which lend a sporty feel to the car. On closer inspection, however, the cost-cutting becomes apparent. The cheap plastics on the dash and the door panels, although well masked, feel extremely down-market.

The Honda Civic Si offers the most legroom in the front and back rows. The Miata also has the same front row space as the Honda, without a back row. The Toyota 86 and the Subaru BRZ, both offer the same amount of front and back row space.

2018 Toyota 86 Infotainment Features

The infotainment system on the 2018 Toyota 86 is somewhat bare basic. The base variant gets a 7-inch touchscreen and has the basics, real basics, it does not have Apple CarPlay/Android Auto.

2018 Toyota 86 Cargo volume

The cargo capacity of the Toyota 86 is extremely limited, with only 6.9 cubic feet of storage space in the trunk. Thankfully, the rear seats can be folded to create space in the rear. The back seats do not fold down in any configuration but fold down as a bench seat.

The Honda Civic Si Offers the most cargo space of the above cars with 11.9 cu-ft. Then comes the Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ with 6.9 cu-ft and then the least offering is the Mazda MX-5 with 4.8 cu-ft. 

Toyota describes the 86 as a small, light, and fun-filled performance car. The small and light part can be objectively agreed on by everyone, as the little 86 manages to keep both its size as weight in check. At just 166 inches in length, the 86 is as big as a hatchback.

It also weighs a little less than 2,774 pounds, which is pretty light by any standard.

The Toyota 86 is in the middle when it comes to length, the Honda being approximately 10-inches longer and the Mazda Mx-5 being approximately 12-inches shorter. However, the other dimensions are similar. When we speak of weight the Toyota 86 is on the heavier side of the above cars. 

The Toyota 86 has not yet completed its NHTSA testing, but in the ones it has been tested in, the new Toyota 86 has scored 4-stars and 5-stars respectively. The IIHS gave the 86 a mixed safety score that includes more "Good" ratings translating to the car's decent safety quotient. The 2018 Toyota 86 comes packed with a host of safety features, in order to keep the driver and the passengers safe. Toyota 86 Coupé vs The Honda Civic Si Coupe

The Honda Civic Si has the same amount of power, better fuel economy, and even more space in the interiors. The Toyota 86 does have better performance, as this is a performance car that’s all that matters from it. 

Toyota 86 Coupe vs Subaru BRZ Premium

The Subaru BRZ is the same car as the Toyota 86, with a change of badges being the only differentiating factor. Thus, unless one dealership is offering better insurance than the other dealership, there isn't much reason to differentiate between the two.

Toyota 86 Coupe vs Mazda MX-5 Miata RF Club

The Mazda MX-5 Miata is the lightest and the purest car among this bunch, and with its tiny size, it is quite a lot of fun to throw around the corners. The car is perfect for people who already own a proper car for practical uses and need a second car for weekend getaways. If, however, you need a car for any reason other than fun, the MX-5 is not for you.

The purists claim the Toyota 86 indeed has that old-school flavor with new age reliability. The original 86, made famous by the popular anime show 'Initial-D' was a beautiful machine, crafted by engineers to be light and agile. The new one manages to preserve the legacy while being a better car in every single aspect. The practicality takes a little hit, although it's not much of a deal-breaker.
