About 2018 Toyota Camry

3.9

Overall Rating

The base L trim of the Camry offers great value for money. But the SE trim that costs $2000 extra comes with luxury features like climate control, audio, and a cruise control button on the steering wheel.

The Toyota Camry enters the 2018 model year as an entirely new model, marking the beginning of the eighth generation of this midsize sedan. As a result, the 2018 Camry sits on an entirely new platform, exhibits a completely redesigned exterior and interior, and brings in three different powertrain choices.

There's an all-new 8-speed Direct Shift automatic transmission in the mix as well. The 2018 Toyota Camry will be offered in five trims and all variants will get Toyota Safety Sense-P as standard. All variants will come with Toyota Entune 3.0 multimedia system too, with prices starting at $23,495 for the base L model.

The Camry is not the car that you generally flaunt. Functionality and practicality are what this car is supposed to offer. Analyzing all the features offered across all the variants, the base L variant of the Camry makes more sense. It comes with all the basic essential features and comes as a great value for your money. But if you want a more powerful Camry, opt for the XLE V6 trim which will cost you 11-grand more than the base L.

2018 Toyota Camry Review

Pros

  • Ergonomic interiors
  • Sportier than previous model years

Cons

  • Low acceleration
  • Poor luggage space

The base L trim of the Camry offers great value for money. But the SE trim that costs $2000 extra comes with luxury features like climate control, audio, and a cruise control button on the steering wheel.

Overview

Pricing and Features
7.0/10

The 2018 Toyota Camry is offered in 5 trims having two different engine choices. There's also an all-new Camry Hybrid (reviewed separately) making its debut this year. Now, the base L trim is priced at $23,495 and the top-spec variant is priced at $29,000 - $34,950 when equipped with the V6. All prices exclude an $885 destination charge. The standard 2018 Camry is powered by a 2.5-liter engine that generates 203 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. There is also an option for a zesty V6 engine, for those who want more power, on the XLE and XSE trims as well. Both the engines are mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission sending power to the front wheels as standard.

But being a completely new model, even the base L trim comes with many advanced features like a 7-inch touch screen infotainment system, bi-LED combination heap lamps, and an integrated backup camera. The LE adds a bit more convenience with dual-zone air conditioning and better materials. The SE trim builds upon the LE to give a sportier exterior design. The XLE and the XSE models feature real leather upholstery and 8-way power-adjustable seating.

Engine and Performance
9.1/10

"It picks up cleanly from a standstill with no lurchiness or pregnant pauses. A pleasant, innocuous driving experience." -Edmunds.Com

The 2018 Toyota Camry comes equipped with two new engine options: a 2.5-liter Inline-4 and a 3.5-liter V6 engine. The V6, however, is available for the XLE and XSE trims as an option, with both priced at $34,400 and $34,950 respectively. The 2.5-liter engine generates 203 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque while the 3.5-liter V6 makes 301 horsepower and a massive 267 pound-feet of torque.

The transmission is a smooth and highly efficient 8-speed automatic gearbox, which does well to get the most out of the engine output. But it is a bit sluggish as compared to some of the competitors, particularly during downshifting. Regardless, the gearbox feels fairly intuitive and keeps you in the right gear at the right time. The 8-speed setup further augments highway cruising, offering seamless shifting when required.

The Camry's closest rival, the Honda Accord is 11 HP deficient to the Camry. Interestingly, the Honda Accord has a much higher low-end torque of 192 lb-ft, which makes it more composed over a larger range of speeds. It is followed by the Mazda 6 and the Ford Fusion midsize sedans that make 187 HP and 173 HP respectively. In a race, the Camry hits the 0-60 MPH mark in 8.0 secs and covers the quarter-mile distance in 16.2 secs. The gearbox is very good at keeping the engine going and selectively moving through the gears, although it's tedious to downshift and not as ready to hold on to gears.

The ride quality and handling of the Camry, however, has improved a lot when compared to its predecessor. The engine responses are sharper and the gear shifts are more refined. There isn't much body roll and the car is rather well mannered around turns or even at high speeds. The overall ride quality has also improved all over the range, with smaller potholes and imperfections being easily soaked up. Toyota has even made the noise deadening in the 2018 Camry a bit better.

Fuel Economy
9.1/10

The 2018 Camry's smaller 2.5L powertrain has been specifically designed by Toyota to offer some excellent mileage figures. The Toyota Camry returns fuel economy of up to 39 MPG, while city mileage comes to about 28 MPG. At the same time, the midsize sedan delivers a combined fuel economy of 32 MPG, which is impressive for a 200+ horsepower car. But the biggest improvement in efficiency is witnessed in the new 301 HP V6 motor. Additionally, the new Camry comes with a 16-gallon fuel tank, which comfortably helps the sedan traverse up to a whopping 624 miles on the highway.

The only car that comes closest to the Camry is the Honda Accord that gets a combined fuel economy rating of 33 MPG. The Mazda 6 and the Ford Fusion Sedan get a fuel economy rating of 27 MPG and 25 MPG respectively.

Interior
8.0/10

"The cabin feels spacious and airy up front, with good visibility in all directions." - Cars.USNews.Com

The new Camry has a lot of space to offer on the inside. The cabin is spacious and airy but it is not as quiet as you'd expect it to be. On the front row, you have 38.3 inches of headroom, 57.7 inches of shoulder room, and 42.1 inches of legroom. Jump to the back seats and you get 38.0 inches of headroom, 55.7 inches of shoulder room, and 38.0 inches of legroom. The new seats are comfortable and well designed to offer great support. Toyota has also revamped the interior styling which now features better material over all the trims. It still might look old school to some but it is quite practical. Also characteristic of Toyota, even the cheaper or unseen bits of the interior have considerable attention to detail.

On the quality front, there's undoubtedly no questioning. The 2018 Camry, as with older models, comes with fantastic interior build quality. This quality statement directly translates to the rest of the vehicle, we must mention, in the form of excellent reliability. Inside the cabin, every piece of trim, every button, and every knob feels extremely solid and well put together. All the driver controls and settings are well within reach and are extremely ergonomically placed. Stuff like this is pretty standard in the case of Toyota products.  Higher trims will get you fancy features such as ventilated leather seats, and power adjustments. There are several interior packages on offer too, and you can pick one based on how much you'd like to enhance your cabin experience with the 2018 Toyota Camry.

Comparing the competition, the Honda Accord offers the best legroom in the rear and it also has the most modern and well-styled interiors among the segment rivals. The Camry has the highest rear headroom to offer, while the Ford Fusion comes with the most rear shoulder space. At the front, the Honda Accord comes with the most headroom, while also offering the most shoulder space. It's the Ford Fusion that has the most legroom to offer at the front. Clearly, the competition offers different things for different customers, and it's tricky to settle one winner for the cabin space department.

The 2018 Camry has a well-made and reliable infotainment system too, featuring Entune 3.0 multimedia system on all models. It comes with a 7-inch interface display and gets Entune 3.0 Audio with Connected Navigation Scout GPS Link App. You also get an integrated backup camera with a projected path display. Additionally, you get a 4.2-in. TFT Multi-Information Display with odometer, outside temperature, fuel economy, and trip information. The available Remote Connect includes remote starting and unlocking as well as vehicle finder and status notifications. It has a WiFi hotspot for up to 5 devices with a 4G LTE connection. Most disappointing is that the new system does not include either Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. Some of the key infotainment features in the 2018 2018 Toyota Camry are:

  • WiFi Hotspot 4G LTE
  • Bluetooth Connectivity
  • Entune Audio with Connected Navigation Scout GPS Link App
  • 7.0-in. touchscreen
  • Integrated backup camera with projected path
  • 4.2-in. TFT Multi-Information Display with odometer, outside temperature, fuel economy, and trip information

Exterior

"The new car is longer, lower, and (fractionally) wider, giving it a slightly lower-slung profile." -CarAndDriver.Com

The 2018 Camry has been fully redesigned. The new design has given it a striking appearance and it looks bolder and attractive. The new two-part grille now has a larger badge and the body lines now carry far more sculpting than before, which aids the sportier look. Also, Toyota has introduced a new set of wheels for the updated Camry, which clearly adds a distinctive look and a much more desirable feel to the Toyota sedan. There's also two-tone paint available with certain trims, which definitely helps in adding a tastefully sporty touch to the exterior of the Camry.

The SE and XSE models have a different appearance from the rest. They get sculpted rocker panels, 19-inch wheels, an aggressive front bumper, a diffuser-style rear bumper, and a rear lip spoiler. They even get larger side intakes in the bumper accompanied by a gloss black mesh grille. The side profile reminds you of a fastback and comes with an eerie similarity to that of the Kia Stinger. The rear features aggressive styling as the front, along with subtle bits of chrome in all the right places. There's also a sliced-out section at the back, which basically tries to mimic an air vent, adding another dimension of sportiness to the Camry's aesthetic appeal.

Compared to the previous model year, the 2018 Camry is now longer, wider, and lower than before too. At 5.7 inches, the 2018 Camry has the least ground clearance among its rivals. Thanks to the new TNGA platform, it is the also lightest car in the segment after the Honda Accord, weighing in under 3300 pounds. However, the Mazda 6 measures the longest and widest in its class. The 2018 Ford Fusion measures the tallest among the competition, while the low-slung Camry ends up with the least height. The Mazda 6 has the most ground clearance to offer, and the Toyota Camry, unsurprisingly, hangs closest to the ground among the rivals. All the sedans in the lot offer nearly the same amount of wheelbase, while the Ford Fusion offers an extra 0.8 inches of it, claiming the wheelbase crown in that regard.

Competition

Toyota Camry vs Honda Accord

The Honda Accord is just a tad bit cheaper than the Camry. It is 11 horses deficient to the Camry but surprisingly has marginally better acceleration figures and fuel economy as well. The Honda Accord and the Toyota Camry both offer similar space on the inside, though the Accord has a bit better rear row legroom. It is pretty much a tie in this case.

Toyota Camry vs Mazda 6

The Mazda 6 is almost $1500 cheaper than the Camry but at the same time, it is 26 horses deficient to the Camry. It does have slightly better acceleration figures but it loses big on fuel economy but fights back with a marginally bigger luggage area. The Mazda 6 is meant for people that intend to have fun with their cars, it drives and performs a tad bit better than the Camry even on the smaller engine and with its older 6-speed automatic transmission.

Toyota Camry vs Ford Fusion

The Ford Fusion is priced cheaper than the Camry. But its motor only makes 175 horsepower, and thus, has poorer acceleration figures than the Camry. The sedan also fails to score in terms of fuel economy. For a few bucks extra, the Camry is better on any day. Though the Ford is arguably better styled, its options come into play in higher trims, where the Toyota Camry offers cheaper alternatives.

Final Verdict

The Toyota Camry is a car that speaks form and functionality. It is a fantastic car as a daily driver, and also as a family vehicle. It gets all the basic things right and is built to satisfy the purpose, and particularly to last long. Additionally, the 2018 Toyota Camry also gets some added sporty performance and handling. With the generational update, it also offers better features than its rivals and scores better than its rivals on the safety front. On highways, the Camry manages to overtake with ease, while returning excellent fuel economy figures. There certainly are a few things that the sedan's rivals manage to do better, but the Toyota Camry stands superior at an overall level, delivering excellence in every relevant aspect.
