Overall Rating
Motoring is approached differently by people – some like being alone in a machine, close to the limits. Some like being with loved ones and roam around the landscape leisurely. The latter is what the 2018 Toyota Sienna stands for.
The 2018 Toyota Sienna continues to be the torchbearer of the modern minivans with its powerful engine option, excellent reliability ratings, and a roomy cabin. However, where it lacks behind its classmates is in terms of handling dynamics and below-average safety ratings. Priced at $48,715 for the base trim, the Sienna is offered in 5 different trims; L, LE, XE, XLE, and Limited. These trims are offered plenty of options to choose from, which lets you build the perfect van suited to your specific needs. Powered by an efficient V6 mated to a smooth 8-speed automatic, it remains immensely friendly to your wallet. Toyota also offers class-exclusive all-wheel drive with the Sienna, a boon if you live in northern snow-affected areas. Also, being a Toyota the Sienna does not depreciate as much as its rivals which makes judicious use of your family budget.
We think the LE trim, at $33,660 is the best value, as it can seat 8 and offers all the necessary features like power sliding rails and gets upgraded Entune Audio Plus. If you live in snow-affected areas, the all-wheel-drive option is also available in LE trim. The next significant upgrade is XLE trim, costing $3000 dollars and offering an excellent 9 speaker JBL stereo system and other tasty features.

2018 Toyota Sienna Buying Advice
We think the LE trim, at $33,660 is the best value, as it can seat 8 and offers all the necessary premium features like power sliding rails and gets upgraded Entune Audio Plus. If you live in snow-affected areas, the all-wheel-drive option is also available in LE trim. The 2018 Toyota Sienna is powered by a 3.6 L V6 that develops 296 horsepower at 6600 rpm and 263 lb-ft of torque at 4700 rpm. The engine develops more power than most of its competitors. Also, the Sienna offers best-in-class torque and that improves drivability. More importantly, it puts down the power smoothly and silently, which certainly is an important criterion for a comfortable drive. The 8-speed automatic unit is smooth and shuffles power through the powertrain without you even noticing. Thus, overall you get a refined driving experience that can even keep up with fast-moving traffic on the freeway.

The 2018 Toyota Sienna offers the highest horsepower figure, while also delivering the most torque. The Honda Odyssey and the Chrysler Pacifica come close in terms of horsepower and torque figures, while the Kia Sedona feels slightly underpowered. The Kia also comes equipped with a tardy 6-speed automatic, whereas the competitors get quicker 8 and 9-speed gearboxes.
While it is quite meaningless analyzing 0 to 60 launch times of minivans, it still doesn’t hurt to compare the numbers among rival vans. The 2018 Toyota Sienna manages to climb to 60 miles per hour from a standstill in a lethargic 6.9 seconds while crossing the quarter-mile mark in just over 15 seconds.
The Sienna also manages to hit top speeds of up to 113 miles per hour which is the highest among its class. Thus in terms of performance, it is one of the best packages available in the segment that money can buy.

Comparing the competition, the 2018 Honda Odyssey cleanly comes off as the quickest vehicle in a straight line, climbing to 60 miles per hour in 6.6 seconds. The Odyssey and the Sienna both cross the quarter-mile mark the quickest, in 15.2 seconds. The fastest vehicle in the lot is the Honda Odyssey, which is capable of reaching top speeds of up to 120 miles per hour. In terms of towing capacity, all the minivans in the lot perform almost equally well, with the 2018 Chrysler Pacifica offering a slightly higher capability figure.
A minivan, along with being super practical, must be fuel-efficient. The 2018 Toyota Sienna returns 19 miles per gallon in the city and delivers 27 miles to the gallon on the highway. The result is a combined MPG figure of 22, which is fairly decent given its size. The Sienna also comes fitted with a sizable 20-gallon fuel tank, which coupled with its reasonable fuel efficiency, can take the minivan as far as 540 miles without refueling.

The Toyota Sienna and the Honda Odyssey offer the best fuel economy figures. The Chrysler Pacifica trails these two closely at 18 MPG in the city and 28 MPG on the highway for a combined EPA rating of 22 MPG. However, the significantly less costly Kia Sedona proves to be the most costly here. At 17 MPG in the city and 22 MPG on the highway for a combined EPA rating of 22 MPG, Sedona is the thirstiest contender here.
Why do we buy a minivan? Right, to ferry around a lot of people. That makes the interior the most important part of the equation. The Sienna interior has to accommodate eight (or seven depending on trim) passengers in comfort, keep them cool and entertained and provide storage for their Knick-Knacks. The 2018 model year of the Sienna offers a tilting steering column and can be adjusted for reach and that ensures everyone can have a perfect driving position. You can get heated steering wheels and front seats as an option. A three-zone air-conditioning keeps the cabin climate pleasant but the quality of materials used inside are not very premium.
The large windows, apart from offering a great view of the landscape for your kids, allow plenty of harsh sunlight in the cabin. Thankfully, the second and third-row get sunshades from LE trim onwards. If you opt for SE trim and splurge to SE premium package, you also get a power tilt/slide moonroof offering a splendid view of the celestial world above for your family.
On a less romantic note, the Sienna lacks the vacuum cleaner offered in the Odyssey - a boon in a minivan, especially after a long trip with kids. Coming to kids, Sienna does get conversation mirrors - a mirror to keep a view on those rear seats with naughty kids thinking daddy is busy driving.

The 2018 Toyota Sienna falls a little short of the Honda Odyssey and Chrysler Pacifica in the second and third-row room. However, the deficit is not really all that significant, and even adults wouldn’t complain. The Sienna has the best in the class head, shoulder, and hip room, making it ideal for ferrying a lot of people around comfortably.
The 2018 Toyota Sienna offers plenty of storage options, in the form of door pockets, central cup holders on the first and second row, and a double glove box. A deep rubbery bin between the driver and passenger seat offers a place to stow away additional storage items. Toyota knows a large number of people have a large amount of luggage. With all seats up, you have 39 cubic feet of luggage space - the largest among the competition.
The Sienna’s interior is flexible too, as the last row can fold in a 60/40 split. If you decide to fold away the last row completely, you will have 87 cubic feet to play with. The second row can be folded and moved up to the front seats to get 150 cubic feet of storage space. However, if you want to shift seriously large items, second-row seats can be removed completely. A caveat - in the Sienna, getting rid of second-row seats is not as easy as Chrysler Pacifica, which is with a touch of a button in the latter.

With all seats folded down, the 2018 Toyota Sienna offers the most cargo volume of 150 cubic feet. The Honda Odyssey follows closely, offering 145 cubic feet of space with all seats folded. With the third row folded, the Honda Odyssey has the most space to offer, followed closely by the Chrysler Pacifica and the Toyota Sienna. Behind the third row, the Sienna offers the most space, and that too by a considerable margin over its closest competition, the Honda Odyssey. Some major interior highlight offered with the 2018 Toyota Sienna include:
Toyota offers Entune 3.0 multimedia system as standard across the 2018 Sienna lineup to fulfill your basic needs. The Toyota Sienna also offers a connected navigation scout link and moving maps. However, if you enjoy entertainment privately, the Sienna LE, SE, and XLE get Entune audio plus as standard. The Entune audio plus gets Wi-Fi Connect, offering a 4G LTE connection to five mobile devices. Those fancying their own mobile concert hall can get the Sienna in SE and XLE trims, and option them with Entune 3.0 Premium JBL (standard on Limited trim). On a less positive note, Android Auto and Apple Carplay are missing. Some key infotainment features offered with the 2018 Toyota Sienna include:
The 2018 Toyota Sienna looks fairly pleasing from the outside but not very distinctive. The large front lower grills, sculpted bonnet, and swept-back headlights jazz up the looks a bit. However, the side profile is a typical minivan, with a large glasshouse and upright D-Pillars. Typical of minivans, the Sienna gets large sliding doors with hidden door rails. Fog lamps are available from the SE trim onwards. The L and LE trim gets simple 6 spoke alloy wheels, while the top of the line Platinum trim rides on 19-inch, 10 spoke machined alloy wheels. A range of color palettes is available.
The Sienna does sport slightly awkward design elements, but the overall proportions of the minivan are fairly good to look at, with nothing particularly wrong with Sienna’s aesthetic appeal.

The 2018 Toyota Sienna is slightly smaller in length compared to the Odyssey and Pacifica and will fit in your garage rather easily. However, it's the widest in its class, with its height being average. The Sienna also has best-in-class ground clearance, and if optioned with AWD, this minivan will cover some rough grounds. The Sienna is among the heaviest in class.
Toyota is one of the most trusted brands, and the company stands true to its reputation. Segment-exclusive active safety features are bundled in Toyota Safety Sense - P (TSS-P) as standard across all the variants. However, if something unfortunate does happen, the Sienna is fully loaded with a host of passive safety features including the all-row Roll-sensing Side Curtain Airbags. The 2018 Sienna got a 5-Star crash test rating from the NHTSA. The Sienna also comes with a tough chassis to eat impact loads without harming passengers inside. Some key safety features offered with the 2018 Toyota Sienna include:
The 2018 Honda Odyssey is similarly priced to the Toyota Sienna but offers Android Auto and Apple Carplay. The Odyssey also offers some innovative features like the hugely practical vacuum cleaner and has more legroom in all three rows. However, the Sienna is a smarter investment as it depreciates slower and fulfills all the important criteria. Also, the availability of AWD is the USP for the Toyota Sienna. However, the Odyssey will make your transition from hot-hatch to a minivan easy with its excellent driving characteristics
The 2018 Chrysler Pacifica is also similarly priced to the Toyota Sienna and offers more premium interiors. Additionally, all the seats fold electrically for greater convenience. The Chrysler Pacifica will impress you if looks are important, with its sleek chrome-trimmed window line and sweeping daytime running lamps. Although the Pacifica is more luxurious, the Sienna comes with the reliability of the Toyota brand and offers class-exclusive all-wheel drive. The Pacifica is just better if all-out luxury is what you are looking for in a minivan.
The 2018 Kia Sedona is slightly smaller, and costs less than all the competitors for a similarly equipped trim. The Styling and the looks of the Sedona will surely impress some. The Kia also has the best in class braking performance by a wide margin. However, its fuel economy is disappointing and over the long run, the Sienna will cost less due to its slow depreciation and significantly better gas mileage.
The 2018 Toyota Sienna is an honest vehicle that does what it's built for excellently. This minivan will accommodate all your family in comfort, and their luggage too. The smooth and efficient powertrain is just what a minivan should have. Availability of all-wheel drive is a huge boon to anyone living in snow-affected areas. All this is backed by Toyotas' excellent reliability and aftersales. However, the Toyota Sienna’s infotainment lacks Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while the Odyssey and the Pacifica do offer these. The Toyota Sienna, thus, is a distilled form of what a minivan should be - spacious, comfortable, efficient, safe, and decidedly more cost-effective over the long run.
