The 2019 Audi A6 sedan is available in three different trims. The A6 family starts at the “Premium” priced at $54,100 and tops out at $67,100 for the top-end “Prestige”. With the all three trims offered for the A6 sedan you get the Audi signature all wheel drive Quattro system as standard. 

The MMI touch panel gets larger as you move up the trims as well as the creature comforts like a premium sound system, 12-way adjustable seats and Heads up display gradually catch up. Across the range you can pick between a 2.0-liter or 3.0-liter turbo but if that's not enough for you, the more powerful Audi S6 is the thing for you.

Choose the Premium Plus for utmost bang-for-your-buck, while the Premium is a base level trim with just the fundamental features. The Audi virtual cockpit is a must have in the A6 sedan, which enhances the user experience. The Bang and Olufsen speaker system fills the cabin with rich surround sound, a worthy upgrade over the basic setup.

The stunning yet understated 4-door luxury sedan comes with two engine options to pick from. There is a 2.0-liter turbo inline-4 motor making 248 hp and a 3.0-liter turbo V6 that makes 335 hp. While the Premium and Premium Plus models come standard with the 2.0-liter pot, the Prestige comes with the V6 as standard. However, you can hook the V6 as an option on the lower trims as well. Transmission duties with either of the engines are carried out by a 7-speed automated manual transmission. A mild-hybrid system also assists the power-delivery with both the available powertrains.

On the move, the 2.0-liter turbo feels aptly powered and refined, the 3.0-liter V6 pours in a lot more vigour and mid-range torque. Another highlight you'd appreciate is the 7-speed dual clutch automatic, since Audi stopped making manuals for all, except the A4 models. The precise upshifts hit like a snare at the end of a 4/4 rock beat. Combine that with the flamboyant lead singer - the Quattro Ultra All-wheel drive system - and you got yourself a band ready to tour the country. However, the bassist is novice as they come, with the muted exhaust note to accompany the engines

Although the BMW and Mercedes here do have higher engines on tap and so does the A6 but with the standard base engine, things are quite similar here. All the rivals here display similar power output but because of their different dynamics, you do get a unique power flavor in each of these beautiful machines. 

Acceleration

With the instant torque delivery from the hybrid assistance, the 2019 A6 feels capable enough even with the base 2.0-liter turbo motor. The sedan reaches 60 miles an hour in a brisk 6.2 seconds and onwards through the quarter mile in 13 seconds. Not bad at all for a heavy sedan which emphasizes a lot upon opulence and comfort.

Even in the acceleration test here, all the rivals lock their horns in a really close contest. While the jaguar XF seems to be a bit off the line, the three Germans here are very very close. Among them though, the BMW 530i happens to be the quickest with its 6.1 second 0-60 run. Although by a very small margin. 

Ride and Handling

The Quattro on the mid-length sedan is a must have if you're driving in icy conditions, but it has a new special feature. It disengages the rear wheels when cruising to improve fuel economy. Apart from that, the AWD sedan has great handling through the corners, able to handle massive G-forces without breaking a sweat.

Maneuvering this faux-limo sedan may seem like a challenge, but it's not. Audi's rear wheel steering system turns the rear axle in the opposite direction to the front, to reduce the turning distance for tight corners. Meanwhile, at higher speeds, the rear wheels move with the front wheels to improve stability.

Braking

The A6 sedan is a heavyweight, weighing in at 4100+ lbs. Stopping this mammoth takes considerable brake force. With the 13.3 discs up front and 13's in the rear, the brakes on the Audi work splendidly. The brake modulation from the pedal is smooth and effortless, instills confidence when handling the sedan, even on slopes. Stopping from 60-0 takes 109 feet and in emergency applications, the A6 feels firm and confident. 

In the braking test here, things happen to be on a different curve. While the Jaguar and Bimmer are equally efficient with a 116 feet 60-0 braking distance, the Audi and Mercedes-Benz are the better ones among the lot. However, the Mercedes-Benz E300 is 3 feet shorter than the A6 in the 60-0 test.

The 48-volt mild hybrid system has brought the fuel economy number up by 2 mpg compared to the 2018 model. This sedan now makes 32 miles to the gallon on highways and a slightly disappointing 24 mpg in the city. However, the lesser fuel economy in consequence of more power is totally acceptable. In combined driving conditions, the 2019 Audi A6 returns you a healthy 27 combined mpg.

Surprisingly though, but even with its heavy weight, the Audi A6 delivers a very healthy fuel economy. In fact, together with the BMW 530’s 27 combined mpg, the A6 is more efficient than the Merc here. However, the Jaguar XF takes the segment lead in terms of efficiency with its fractionally better 28 combined mpg.

On the inside, the fifth-gen Audi A6 is all new and is far ahead than its predecessor. The dashboard and interior layout is all new and there is a much better concentration of premium materials across the cabin. The new A.C vents have a floaty effect into them and the cabin is now highlighted by two large touch screens. Most of the contact-surfaces you are likely to put your hand in are layered with soft-touch materials. The concentration of brushed aluminum and gloss black accents the cabin work really well with the dual-tone theme and further accentuate the pristine ambience inside.

Even the seats are new and better with increased width and better under-thigh support. Leather upholstery and power-adjustability at the front comes standard as well. Moving up the trim ladder unlocks ventilated front seats as well as four-zone climate control. With good padding and all-around support, the seats in the new Audi A6 are very comfortable on longer trips. Even the rear bench has a good height to it and is wide enough to fit three adults with great comfort. 

In terms of cabin space, the A6 does feel roomy to the eyes but the spec-sheet indicates that it has just adequate amount of room, especially at the front row. The likes of the BMW 530i and Mercedes E300 are more generous at the front with better headroom and legroom. At the rear seat though, the A6 does have best in class legroom. 

Infotainment System

Like the manual transmission, it seems Audi is done with making physical buttons and knobs as well, almost all controls now can be accessed through the dual-touchscreen infotainment system. The 2019 Audi A6 gets Audi’s latest MMI which consists of a dual-screen setup. Sitting up the dash is an 8.8-inch touchscreen for your infotainment needs followed by an 8.6-inch unit for climate controls and various in-car settings. Moving up the trim-line you get an even bigger 10.1-inch infotainment display alongside Audi’s virtual cockpit. 

The infotainment screen is sharp and clear and also comes standard with all the latest tech gizmos. You do get Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Satellite Radio, Navigation and a 10-Speaker audio system as standard. The infotainment has haptic feedback for ease-of use, but using it while driving means risky business as you need to take your eyes away from the road frequently. The way around this is the voice command system, although it takes some time to get used to. The infotainment is not perfect, it's almost there, but not quite there yet.

Cargo Capacity

While the refreshed fifth-gen Audi A6 may have brushed upon its overall skills, it does struggle with its practicality. If you are a frequent shopper, you may be disappointed by the 2019 Audi A6’s 13.7 cu-fts of cargo space. Thankfully, you do have foldable split bench rear seats which lie flat and further increases the cargo volume in the sedan.

The Cargo space at the back of the sedan is nowhere near the Jaguar XF and the BMW 5-Series. The duo leads the pack here in terms of practicality with their 17.8 and 18.7 cu-fts of cargo space, respectively. Obviously on the smaller side though but the 13.7 cu-ffts volume in the Audi should be sufficient for most of your requirements

Rather than making radical changes, the engineers at Ingolstadt make small but significant updates to the design and keep the lineup au courant. The bold creases on the A6's bodywork make the light ripple across the sedan. The 2019 A6 is marginally wider than before, particularly around the wheel arches which give the sedan a low hunkered look and an imposing character. 

Adding to that, the big wide grin with the four-ringed badge and shiny chrome slats, gives the A6 a distinctly Audi persona. The front grille is wider and lower than before and the front bumper has been redesigned as well. The headlamps and tail lamps have been redone as well and are now slimmer and also feature Audi’s sequential Matrix LEDs. At the side though, the A6 remains as elegant as ever with sharp body lines and an edgy window-line wrapped in chrome. 

Among the rivals here, it's nothing but a clash of the Titans, especially in terms of exterior attire. While all the cars here have a similar wheelbase and length, they really stand out from each other in terms of their skin-wrapping. While the Mercedes is all about elegance, the Bimmer and Jaguar here portray a nice balance of elegance and sportiness. The Audi A6 on the other is mostly about estately and executive presentation of the highest degree, but one which is very youthful for sure.

One area in particular where the fifth-gen Audi has significantly grown over its predecessor, has to be the safety department. Across the range, the 2019 Audi A6 offers a host of advanced safety features like Frontal collision warning with Auto emergency braking, Blind-spot monitor with Rear-cross traffic alert, Lane keep assist, Side-collision warning and Adaptive cruise control. Audi A6 vs Jaguar XF

The Italian mid-size luxury sedan comes with slightly more power than the A6 sedan, however, the german engineering trumps the Italian anyday. The Quattro all wheel drive system paired to the 3.0L V6 and the 7-speed dual clutch transmission make the A6 fun and dynamic when you need it, but tame and efficient when it needs to.

On the inside, the traditional but outdated cabin of the Ghibli seems more plush, but the ergonomically refined cabin of the A6 feels more comfortable in the long run.

Audi A6 vs BMW 530i

The BMW has long been known as the primary choice for enthusiasts due to the sole focus on power and rear wheel drive, however, the 5-series now maintains a balance between performance and efficiency and is now a closer rival to the A6. Equally plush interiors and tech-rich infotainment, choosing between the two sedans is steadily getting harder through subsequent generations.

The Audi midsize luxury sedan is one of the best all-rounder family cars you can buy. Great engine - check, opulence - check, high-tech infotainment - check, practicality - check, economy - almost there. However, the Four Ringer comes at a price, although less than the Poseidon's Trident (Maserati). If you're confident enough that the Audi A6 won't break your bank, you won't regret a minute you spend in the sedan.
