2019 BMW M4 Review

Albeit being a great coupe, the M4 still sees stiff competition with the likes of Jaguar F-Type R Dynamic and Cadillac ATS V.

BMW 's performance division crafted, M, once again returns the new fun and spirited M3, erm, M4 which is based on the 4-series of the marquee. Carrying the banner from the apparent yesteryear 's M3, the fourth in the series nomenclature ups the game with crafted with pure performance.

The M4 since its inception has been garnering a lot of attention, thanks to its unmistakable appeal and immense road presence. The BMW M4 is a coupe powered by a 3.0L inline-6 cylinder engine. The 2-door coupe has driving dynamics suitable for any drive with supreme levels of comfort in a sport attire. It also offers great technological features and the famous iDrive infotainment system.

Pricing and Features
9.0/10

The BMW M4 is offered in a single trim in 2 different body types - coupe and convertible. In this review you'd read about the coupe configuration. Under this variant, the $77,650 is powered by a 3.0L inline-6 mated to a 6-speed manual transmission with an optional 7-speed dual clutch automatic transmission. The M4 is basically a 4-series BMW, but with added horsepower, adaptive dampers, and a high-performance rear-differential.

We recommend

Unless you want a more robust machine, in which case look at the Competition Package ups the power, adds more adjustments to the adaptive dampers and a few sporty appearance additions. If not, the M4 is an otherwise great package in the base model.

Engine and Performance
9.6/10

The BMW M4 comes standard with a 3.0L inline-6 cylinder mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. Propelling the rear wheels of the coupe, this churns out 425 horses and 406 pound-feet of torque. Blazing quick just as you jab the throttle, the M4 is basically Lightning McQueen on tarmac.

Under the hood, gurgles with familiar pops and crackles of an M machine package sound aloud but it isn't the most appealing aspect of this 4-seater. Its optional 7-speed automatic transmission is quicker, however the manual gearbox housed in the powertrain is mighty as well. The shifts are refined and smooth, and also hell lot of fun to drive.

Alongside the M4, the rest of the coupes swing both ways in respect to their power output. The Corvette Stingray stands the most powerful while the Cadillac ATS V and the Jaguar F-Type follow through.

Acceleration

Zipping the mighty M4 from naught to 60 miles per hour gets done in 4.3 seconds while its 3.0L completes the quarter mile in 12.4s. Swift propulsion is a feat seen even on the F-Type R-Dynamic that however performs relatively slower than the BMW.

But the Chevrolet Corvette beats the field by quite a margin and is the quickest in the field, just ahead of the ATS V, where both are powered by a more powerful V8 under their hood.

Ride and Braking

The BMW M4 is a hell of a car to drive for its razor-sharp handling and excellent ride quality. Attuned more towards a firm ride, the coupe effortlessly balances between soft and stiff suspension, giving unparalleled performance when thrashed around the track or normal city cruising. Flexing on its famed BMW handling, the M4 takes it a step above and glides around the tarmac the way you drive it.

Trouble is when the Bemeer rides over bumps and potholes; it jostles around inspiring less confidence than on smooth roads. The coupe gets firmer when switching its adaptive dampers to sport setting. Its light yet faultless steering is purely accurate and points exactly where intended while road feedback feel is excellent.

Braking

Stopping the 4000 pound heavy BMW, the brakes are as sturdy as the powertrain is. The 15" discs on the M4 ensure powerful and brutal performance to come to a standstill. Being an M division car, performance is never overlooked and the M4 delivers on that front.

The M4 coupe gets beefier brakes than the standard 3 and 4 Series and they can be upgraded with a set of carbon-ceramic brakes. ALthough it outperforms it competition, the BMW is far heavier than its adversaries.

Fuel Economy
7.1/10

Thrifty? This coupe is anything but that; instead, the power underneath the hood is a fuel guzzler. In the city, the M4 manages to offer 17 miles per gallon while you're seeing 25 miles per gallon on the highway. Its rivals drive relatively more efficiently than the Beemer however in contrast, the V8 under the Stingray is the worse drinker, sharing the podium ATS V.

The BMW M4 Coupe still manages a driving range of more than 300 miles in the mixed driving conditions. The 3.0L Inline 6 cylinder is more focused on performance rather than efficiency. The Corvette seems to offer the most range out of all the cars here.

Interior
8.2/10

Like its exterior, the cabin of the M4 is based on the 4 series. It is not really what its performance or the exterior of this coupe would portray. There's not much going on either; it boasts a great list of features and details but falls short of the latest German cars. For a sports car, the seats are quite plush and have functional rear seating.

The Beemer's seating in the front is relatively more comfortable with adjustable positions than the rear seating where legroom isn't sufficient making it no-go for adults; but headspace with the roof down is plenty, ofcourse.

Merino leather makes up the upholstery of the cabin with carbon fiber interior trim with black chrome highlight making up the dash. Visibility around the cabin is really good; there isn't any unnecessary intrusive pillar or equipment in the way. The coupe isn't a really quiet car inside, and nor does it sound any sonorous.

Interior Features

Interior features for the BMW M4 are as follows -

  • M door-sill finishers, M footrest, M gear shift lever and M specific design elements
  • 14-way power front M sport seats with single-piece back panel, including 4-way power lumbar support
  • 3-spoke leather-wrapped multi-function M sport steering wheel\xa0
  • Carbon Fiber Interior trim with Black Chrome highlight
  • Merino Leather upholstery and door trim

Infotainment System

Seated along the dash is a 8.8" BMW iDrive infotainment system. While it does take some time to get used to its controls and explore the multitude arrays of menus, the system is otherwise intuitive and fairly straightforward.

Some features include-

  • Apple CarPlay Compatibility with 1-year trial
  • Advanced Real Time Traffic Information
  • iDrive system with on-board computer and touchpad Controller, and 8 programmable memory buttons
  • SiriusXM Satellite Radio with 1-year All Access subscription
  • Harman Kardon Surround Sound Audio System

Cargo Volume

Inside the BMW's boot, the M4 can accommodate 7.9 cubic feet of luggage which is decent enough for its size. There's more space available thanks to the rear-folding seats, but storage is still paltry. It holds more volume than the F-Type R Dynamic however the Chevrolet Corvette has the best in the field at 15 cubic feet, followed by the ATS V.

The overall design of the M4 is based on the 4 series. Rolling over 18" alloy wheels, the Bavarian looks restrained and conservative but not in a bad way. It still looks stylishly sporty and elegant - something BMW beautifully blends. The mean-looking front fascia incorporates the famous kidney-grille with LED headlights flanked on either side followed by mesh-grilles fitted with fog lights. Long nose with subtle slits and the Beemer insignia make up the hood of the M4.

Detailed parallel character lines run across the side profile, and deeply routed air intake sit near the fenders. Aerodynamically designed to assist in its performance, the 182" long sleek profile moves all the way towards the back. Clear, no-nonsense elements make up the entirety of the Beemer. On the back is dominated by a plain and simple fascia with LED brake lights and dual-tailpipes on the rear left.

Exterior Features

Some features fitted on the body of the M4 are as follows -

  • LED headlights
  • LED fog lights
  • Sport exhaust system with quad tailpipes and chrome-plated exhaust tips
  • Power-folding, heated side mirrors
  • 18" double spoke light alloy wheels
  • Shadowline exterior trim
  • Kidney grille with black twin slats and M4 designation

Safety
7.0/10

With the crash test records absent by the NHTSA and IIHS, we can't judge the Beemer how safe and reliable it is. But the abundance of safety equipment featured in the M4 make a difference in how reliable the BMW is in preventing and providing comfort to you knowing you're in safe hands. Some standard features included are -

  • eCall includes Emergency Request (SOS button) and Enhanced Automatic Collision Notification
  • Automatic Emergency Saving
  • Forward-collision warning
  • Front safety belts with automatic pretensioners
  • Automatic-locking retractors (ALR) on all passenger safety belts for installation of child-restraint seat
  • LATCH attachments for child-restraint safety installation
  • Front and rear Head Protection System (HPS)
  • Anti-theft alarm system

Competition
6.0/10

BMW M4 vs Jaguar F-Type R Dynamic

These two sport coupes don't need to try hard; the BMW and Jaguar are commendable in their own ways while housing a relatively mighty powertrain. However the F-Type costs more than the Bavarian and brags lesser power and seats 2 lesser passengers. But its interior and luxury redeems the English feline including its exotic design.

Both the 2-door coupes have similar ride quality and have spirited driving experience. We'd recommend the Jaguar albeit it being 10 grand more simply because of its eye-turning design and the opulence of the English snob infused with raw power, and especially if you only have one other passenger with you.

BMW M4 vs Cadillac ATS V

The American luxury coupe, Cadillac ATS V, is a great rival for the BMW M4. Both the cars offer excellent performance and materials, however the Bavarian falls short of practicality, interior space and relative performance. Nonetheless the German has impeccable materials and brand value. As they are priced similarly, it depends on which brand you'd prefer.

The Beemer looks like the safer bet purely based on its value but the ATS V is also a great choice. How about test driving both the coupes to see which one's your preferred choice?

Final Verdict

Engineered for pure performance with spirited driving experience, the 2019 BMW M4 is a mix of comfort and power while trying to stay practical. Cramped rear seats do seem problematic but you get a bearable 4-seater sports car unlike the others in its price range.
