The BMW x7 comes in two trims the xDrive 40i and the xDrive 50i. Both trims have very little differentiation between the two, other than the engine and a few small features like an Upgraded Music System and better upholstery.

Both trims offered on the 2019 BMW X7 come with more or less the same set of features but if we were to recommend one of these, it could be the xDrive40i trim. It has all the features an average person needs and more. 

With 2 Engines on offer, BMW has ensured that consumers have the option of going for the X7 with the Engine of their choice. The Base xDrive40i trim of the BMW X7 comes powered by the same 3.0L Turbocharged motor that could be seen on the X6. BMW has not fiddled with the power and torque figures of the motor as well but tuned it slightly differently for the X7. The engine is smooth and responsive and is good for daily driving purposes.

The Interesting and the more powerful motor is the Twin Turbo 4.4L V8 with 456hp and 479lbs.-ft. Of Torque and does duty in the xDrive50i trim. The Engine is far more eager to rev and pull through the traffic and makes the heft of the X7, far easier to manage. Transmission duties are performed by an 8 Speed Unit that shifts effortlessly and without much Jitter or jerks.

Speaking of the rivals, the Cadillac Escalade offers the most power for the price it's being sold at. The GLS 450 manages to come second in this respect and the Range Rover Sport SE takes the second last spot. However, do not let the power figures fool you because when it comes to real-world performance all these vehicles are neck and neck.

Acceleration

The BMW X7, despite being a big SUV, does not fail to deliver on performance. The X7 takes just 5.8 seconds to get to 60 and manages to do the quarter-mile run in just 14.1 seconds. In terms of Tailpipe emissions, the xDrive40i emits just 6.8 units and the xDrive50i emits 8.4 units of Tons/yr. of CO2 Emissions @ 15K mi/year.

The Cadillac Escalade, courtesy of its powerful V8 manages to stay the closest to the X7. The Range Rover on the other hand surprises with acceleration figures as it is identical to the Cadillac's. The Merc is the slowest of the bunch courtesy of its averagely powerful motor and bulk.

Ride and Handling

One of the most sought-after factors while buying a BMW is its Ride and Handling and the X7 does not disappoint. The X7 does manage to change the perspective about 3 Row SUVs being boring and cumbersome to drive. It gets Adaptive Dampers and 2 Axle Air Suspension as standard. This ensures that the body roll is minimized despite the size of the X7 and offers superb body control while taking the corners hard. Noise insulation is great for the most part but takes the X7 over rough surfaces and passengers may complain about the same eventually.

With multiple driving modes on offer ranging from the Timid Eco mode to the maniacal Sport mode, the X7 can bring about changes in the ride height, transmission and engine responsiveness. The Sport mode makes the X7, more biased towards the Rear wheel, hence making the X7 feel more like a standard 3 series to drive.

Braking

The 2019 BMW X7, manages to not only change the perception of 3 Row SUVs in terms of driving but in braking as well. The Bimmer manages to come to a halt from 60MPH in an astonishing 105ft. And hence putting many sports sedans and hatchbacks to shame. 

In terms of the competition, it is the Merc that comes second in the test. The third and the fourth spots are taken by the Land Rover and the Cadillac, respectively.

BMW has managed to beat its rivals by offering the best MPG figures in its class. The X7 manages to pull out an impressive 22MPG of overall Mileage figure while attaining the best figure of 25MPG on the highways. The near 22 Gallon of the fuel tank allows the X7 to traverse over 430 miles on the city and 544 miles on the highway.

Rivals have a long way to catch in terms of the MPG figures on offer when compared to the X7. The Land Rover and the Merc offer pretty similar MPG figures on all terms. The Escalade on the other hand suffers because of its thirsty motor and falls short of the other by a big margin. The Range Rover gets an advantage in terms of range thanks to its massive 28-gallon fuel tank.

BMW has ensured that the X7 feels like a proper SUV and does not miss out on a single front as far as comfort and luxuries are concerned. The Seats are plush and have been contoured with high-quality Vernasca Leather. The Interiors feel solidly put together and all buttons feel perfectly positioned. The Heated Seats and the Power-adjustable steering adds to the sense of comfort in the X7.

The Second Row Captain Seats allow for easy access for passengers on the third row which also offers a decent sense of space as the front and the second row. Materials used are of the highest order and the Interiors feel like they suit an SUV of this class.

While most of the SUVs in our comparison offer 3 rows of seating, it is the Range Rover that misses out on one. The Cadillac Escalade leads the pack in terms of the space on offer for the passengers while the Bimmer stacks in between the Caddy and the Land Rover.
