  • Inspiring Handling

  • Segment Topping Ride Quality
  • 4500 lbs. Towing Capacity

Cons

  • Underperforming Base Engine
  • Lack of Features on middle trims

Prices start from $28,800 for the base FWD Blazer and go over $46,795 for the top of the line Premier trim. Primary rivals to the Blazer include the Nissan Murano, Honda Passport, Hyundai Santa Fe XL, and the Ford Edge.

Overview

With the current crop of car buyers opting to buy SUVs, GM wanted to present a new one to the market to inject fresh life into the segment. GM hence decided to reintroduce the Blazer name in the market, a name which was last seen in the old truck-like SUV. Sharing its underpinnings with the Cadillac XT5 and the GMC Acadia, the 2019 Chevrolet Blazer is the exact opposite of the SUV from which it gets its name.

You get two engine options in the 2019 Blazer that includes a 193hp Inline-4 Motor and a mighty powerful V6 that belts out 305hp. What is even impressive is the fact that Chevrolet is offering the Blazer in an RS trim for people looking for a fun-to-drive SUV.

Pricing and Features
7.0/10

Chevrolet decided to revive its Blazer name tag once again with its new SUV for the 2019 model year. The 2019 Chevrolet Blazer doesn't showcase any resemblance from the previous Blazer and shares a lot of styling cues from modern-day Chevrolet vehicles including the Camaro and the Equinox. The new Blazer comes in four trim levels namely the L, LT, RS, and the Premier.

All of them except the first 2 get the option of an AWD system as well. However, there are three sub-trims on offer, namely, 2.5L Cloth, 3.6L Cloth, and 3.6L Leather. These sub-trims are meant to offer upgraded engines along with better-equipped interiors and more standard safety features. For satisfying the enthusiasts, the RS trim does its best to present a sporty ride and handling for the driver.

We Recommend

For everyday purposes, the base L trim is adequate since it already offers a handsome list of standard features. If performance is your poison, you can opt for the 3.6L Leather trim since it offers a complete experience with the best of both worlds.

Engine and Performance
8.0/10

The 2019 Chevrolet Blazer is offered in two engine options. The base L trims have to live with a naturally aspirated 4-cylinder motor that is good for 193 horsepower and is adequate for daily commutes and comes with a good FWD setup. On the other hand, for people who want a more enthusiastic ride on their way to the office or on the motorway, the 3.6L V6 is the option to go for.

With a massive 305hp on tap, the V6 on the Blazer makes it one of the most powerful SUVs in its class. The massive 269ft-lbs of torque makes zooming through traffic a breeze and performing the odd overtaking maneuver, a lot easier than ever.

For the Transmission part, GM has opted for a 9 Speed Unit which isn't the fastest to respond but not dull to drive with either. We do however like the prompt response of the transmission from standstill but we don't particularly like the (+/-) buttons on the gear lever to change gears manually.

Acceleration

The 2019 Chevrolet Blazer's acceleration from the 3.6L is one of the best in the segment and with a 6.3 second time to do the 60mph dash from a standstill, the Blazer has its head held high against the competition.

In terms of the competition, the newly launched Honda Passport is the fastest of the lot, thanks to its lower curb weight and powerful motor. The Nissan Murano and the Hyundai Santa Fe XL are the slowest of all the cars with a time of more than 7 seconds to do the dash to 60.

Ride and Handling

In lieu of the sporty characteristics, the Chevrolet Blazer has a relatively firmer ride as compared to its rivals and that translates to its precise handling manners. The new Blazer SUV isn't based out on a Big Chevy truck and is based on a modern SUV platform. The Chevy Blazer uses independent suspension and this allows the blazer to handle small bumps and cracks on the road quite easily. In terms of enthusiastic driving though, it's the Blazer RS that steals the show with its sports-tuned suspension and steering that takes the driving experience to a whole new level.

The steering also adds to the driving character of the Blazer and the strong handling characteristics are aided by the light steering at city speeds. However, once you climb to Highway speeds, the steering weighs a lot heavier than most people would expect it to and tends to be less pleasing to drive on the same. However, this isn't exactly a deal-breaker as the centering force of the Blazer has been programmed well and helps the SUV maintain a straight line with great poise and composure.

Braking

We don't have the 60-0 figures for the Blazer for now but considering the big brake rotors and super grippy tires, we expect the Blazer's braking performance to be similar to the other SUVs in the segment.

Fuel Economy
5.0/10

Chevrolet claims that the Blazer not only blazes the others with its performance but also with its MPG figures as well. As per company claims, the 2019 Chevrolet Blazer returns a superb 22MPG as an overall figure while the massive 19.4-gallon fuel tank takes the driving range to at least 388 miles. To add to the MPG figures, all trims of the Blazer come with Active Grille Shutters and Start/Stop System that helps in conserving fuel when the engine isn't being used fully.

If you are looking for the most frugal SUV in the segment then the Honda Passport is the one that should suit you well. The Honda edges out the Chevy by the whisker of a cat while the Murano comes a close third. The Hyundai Santa Fe XL is the least frugal of the lot thanks to its big performance and heavyweight.

Interior
7.0/10

Passengers inside the 2019 Chevrolet Blazer, won't complain about the amount of space inside as GM engineers have carved out a lot of space inside the cabin. There aren't extensive levels of bolstering in the seats that add to the movement of the body in the SUV while reducing tiredness. For long distances, however, the seats are a bit too stiff than the competition and may seem unpleasing while doing long stints in the same.

There are plenty of adjustments available for the front seats while the rear seats can be folded to add space inside the cabin. The cabin has active noise cancellation on offer in all trims but the Engine noise may still creep in when revving the motor hard. What will please the rear passengers are the rear reclining seatbacks, which reduce strain on the back on long trips and adds to the comfort.

Infotainment System

Chevrolet decks out some good set of features in its infotainment systems of all its cars and the new Blazer is no different. The Blazer packs in all modern features, expected of an SUV of this class while doesn't skip on the same even on the base trims, which get a touchscreen Infotainment System as well.

Here’s the list of features available from the infotainment system of the 2019 Chevrolet Blazer

  • Android Auto and Apple Car Play Compatibility

Exterior
8.0/10

The 2019 Chevrolet Blazer draws no inspiration from the previous Blazer models and tends to take a more modern approach to the design. The Blazer looks premium from all angles, be it from the sides, front, or the rear. There is a floating roofline to the Blazer's design that seems inspired by the Camaro and the side sculpting and curves give the same impressions.

The front design looks futuristic with the sleek LED DRL's on the top and the headlights placed where you usually see fog lamps in other cars. The front grille changes from variant to variant where the RS gets a glossy and sporty look while the premium trim gets a more chrome-laden design.

The rear end of the Blazer, clearly seems inspired by the Camaro and the high taillights give an impression of the same. There is a lot of sculpting thrown all throughout the body of the Blazer and the High ground clearance, gives the Blazer a clear edge over the rivals. In terms of the other dimensions as well, the Blazer is similarly poised against the rivals and there is not much to differentiate among the same.

Exterior Features

The new Blazer is an absolute looker from the inside, courtesy of its big set of features present in it. Some of those features include

  • 20" Alloy Wheels
  • Body-Colored Antenna
  • Auto On/Off HID Projector Headlamps with LED DRL's
  • LED Tail Lights
  • Intermittent Front and Rear Wipers
  • Hands-Free Gesture Liftgate
  • Heated powered auto-dimming ORVM's with integrated turn signal indicators
  • Roof Rails
  • Upper Active Aero Stutters

Safety
6.0/10

The 2019 Chevrolet Blazer bagged a perfect 5-star rating from the NHTSA and an overall "Good" rating from the IIHS as well. The overall built quality of the Blazer is also quite solid and there is a generous list of standard safety features available with the SUV.

Some of the safety features present in the Blazer includes

  • 7 Airbags
  • HD Rear Vision Camera
  • LATCH system
  • Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone alert
  • On-Star and Chevrolet Connected Services
  • ESC with Traction Control
  • Teen Driver Assist
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System with Tire Fill Alert

Competition
6.0/10

Chevrolet Blazer vs Nissan Murano

The Nissan Murano has been the segment stalwart in the SUV space because of its Well Built cabin, good refinement levels, and tank-like build quality. The Nissan's design however feels a bit dated as compared to other SUVs in the segment and the Blazer is a stark example. The Chevy Blazer looks like it is 10 years ahead of its class in terms of both the exteriors and the interiors. The Blazer also packs in more punch with its V6 and offers a better MPG figure as well.

Chevrolet Blazer vs Honda Passport

The Honda Passport is a newbie in the segment like the Blazer. The Passport has tons of space on the inside and packs in a lot of safety features as well as standard. What makes the Passport stand out is its good balance between MPG figures and performance. The Chevy on the other hand looks more striking than the Honda and offers a more thrilling performance behind the wheels. The RS Trim in the Blazer allows people to go all out when they want to and the sporty tuning to the chassis and suspension, adds to the occasion.

Chevrolet Blazer vs Hyundai Santa Fe XL

The Hyundai Santa FE XL is a new entrant to the segment as well and Hyundai has done everything it could, to present a segment-worthy offering. The Santa Fe outshines the Blazer with its comfort and convenience features on offer and packs in a lot of tech equipment as well. The Blazer, on the other hand, looks futuristic and leagues ahead of the competition in terms of styling. For people looking for a more driver-focused SUV, the Blazer is the one with its firmer suspension tune and a powerful V 6 motor as well.

Final Verdict

With the all-new 2019 Blazer, Chevrolet has a lot going for it. With a superb ride quality, crispy infotainment system, great looks, and a sporty engine, the Chevy Blazer is certainly a well-rounded SUV. It may not be as comfortable to ride as the Santa Fe or as spacious to be in as the Passport, but it does everything that you ask it to do. With a relatively lesser asking price of $28,800 and striking exteriors, the Chevy Blazer is truly one of the most formidable SUVs in the segment.
