2019 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Review

Pros

  • Impressive cargo volume for a sports car
  • Shape handling instincts
  • A great value of the asked price

Cons

  • Interior quality is not that finest
  • Cargo space could be better

The Stingray was all over the Hollywood feeds when it made its debut as Jackie Chan's ride in "Rush Hour". But that was the third-gen Corvette and the car has aged well.

Overview

The Stingray was all over the Hollywood feeds when it made its debut as Jackie Chan’s ride in “Rush Hour”. But that was the third-gen Corvette and the car has aged well. Today, the Corvette has become the epitome of flamboyance with crazy styling and power enough to walk the talk. There is no concrete flaw in the Corvette which delivers a perfect bang for your buck.

Pricing and Features
8.0/10

Being the entry-level Corvette, Chevy starts the Stingray's bid at $56,995 with the 1LT trim. There are two other models, the 2LT and 3LT which further add more performance cosmetics and better safety suits. Chevrolet carefully fitted a monochromic V8 engine with a seven-speed manual transmission, an 8-speed automatic transmission is optional on the Stingray.

The 1LT trim is well equipped with a rich feature list, while the 2LT and 3LT further improve the conditions inside the Corvette, however, there is no mechanical change as you climb up the trim ladder. To add more flair to the Corvette you can add the Z51 package which amplifies the sporty vibe with more features. You get a sport-tuned suspension, electronically limited slip differential, dual-performance exhaust, dry sump oiling and more. Also, you can add the L51 package with all three trim levels.

Engine and Performance
9.9/10

Lets level with America on this one, we all want big engines. We like the V6s but love the V8s, keeping that in mind our American homeboy, Chevy continues the tradition by bringing the same 6.2L V8 engine back for 2019.

The engine is mated to a 7-speed stick shift transmission. Though an optional 8-speed automatic is still there on the Stinger. The power plant can muster 455 horsepower and 460-pound-feet of torque.

You can equip the Stingray with a performance exhaust which magnifies all the pops and crackles and brings out the best of Corvette's 455 horses. The engine's power fires up the rear wheels of the Corvette. While the Stingray harbors a healthy V8 the prime center of attraction is the afresh ZL1 which hammers out a whopping 755 horses. You might be in the awe of the newly tuned ZL1 but the Stingray offers solid performance and flawless power delivery.

Acceleration

Nail down the gas pedal and endure the gut punch that the Corvette stings to your body. You will be pinned back to your seat flabbergasted with the 455 horses worth of G Force.

The response is best at the half and full throttle with power oozing out from every range of the rev.

The Vette makes the 60 mph test a little under 4 seconds which is nothing less than impressive. You might be begging to get your hands on the ZL1's 755 horses but this one is enough to drop your jaw.

Ride and Handling

The Stingray's power won't sting its performance or handling prowess like in the ZL1. All 455 horses are usable and bring out the best of the Corvette. The razor-sharp steering is what makes it fun to drive. This fact becomes more eminent at high speeds and meddles with its predictability.

The Stingray takes corners like a badass with negligible body roll. The Z51 adds Performance Traction Management and Magnetic Selective ride control keeping the Stingray planted to overcome the lapse of road communication.

Braking

There are two things which hijack all the compliments directed towards the Corvette's driving prowess, one is its healthy engine and the other is its strong braking dynamics. And the best part is that it's not firm or oddly taxing to your foot which most of the sports cars are.

Rear wheel drive and front engine balances out the ride making it more stable during hard braking. The front brakes are rated at 13.3 inches and the rear is rated at 12.6 inches. From the speed of 60 mph the Vette takes 95 feet to come to a grinding halt.

Fuel Economy
6.3/10

The naturally aspirated V8 on the Corvette may have an appetite for fuel. But surprisingly this muscle based sports runs on a strict diet. In the city, you can expect a 16 mpg mileage while on the highway it pushed this number to 25 mpg. Combined you have a total mileage of 19 mpg which is fair for sports car standards.

While the Corvette's livable fuel economy may be intriguing, the competition yield better numbers. Infiniti 60 and Porsche 718 may be a better pick for your money as far as the economy is concerned. The Dodge Challenger continues the muscle car tradition with its bad ergonomic numbers.

Interior
7.0/10

The Stingray's interior doesn't share the same extroverted nature as its exterior does. However, it has aged well and won't force claustrophobia down the border's hearts like it did before. Since Chevy list the Corvette under Performance cars, its interior is more driver-focused and doesn't promote any distractions.

The low height will make getting in and out an odd endeavor. The low height is compensated with a high seating position, however, you can easily find the right position with adjustable steering and seats.

As you hit the road, you will have a good look of the street and of the highway. This promotes confidence and helps in spirited driving. The thin pillars overcome the bad cross view problem which was evident in the Camaro. All the controls are in the vicinity of the driver and the quality is right for the price. You won't find any necessary plastics in the Corvette, though its competitors are all game when it comes to interiors. As for options, you have three seat color options, grey, black, and red.

Cargo volume

Performance cars are built to perform, so it's obvious they prioritize handling over utility, well the Stingray begs to differ. The flat cargo bay can swallow more suitcases for your weekend escapade than you expect. You get a total of 15 cubic feet worth of cargo volume. Inside the cabin, there are not many palaces to put your stuff but that's nitpicking, you can totally manage the cabin.

The Infiniti Q60 features the lowest cargo volume of 8.7 cubic feet. The Challenger's boat-like design also offers an impressive 16.2 cubic feet which trump both the Mustang and Camaro. The Porsche 718 matches the Stingray on this one.

Infotainment

The Corvette comes standard with an 8-inch infotainment screen. Chevrolet's MyLink infotainment system delivers fast response and has an easy to use interface. Chevy brought all their artillery and installed it in this sports machine. You get Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity as standard features. Also, the Stingray was backed with voice-activated technology to access the Radio and Phone.

Exterior
8.5/10

This is the continuation for the seventh generation of Corvette and it's as loud as ever. The Corvette might get a hypercar reaction on the streets but the styling is too extroverted. Some people may not like the over the top design. The soft rear end on the C6 used to be tasteful with its round lights but now the rear end is more menacing and full of character. The fine lines on the hood enhance the drag coefficient and the functional hood air extractor doesn't intrude the design flow. The beefed-up rear end has a muscle car vibe while the low height hood is a true sports car hallmark.

There are loads of customization options with 10 vivid paint options. You can further personalize it to a racings machine with a galore of Stripes and decal options. There are 9 alloy wheel options plus you can get the accessories from Z06 and ZL1. Chevy gives a multitude of options for rear spoilers. However, these options will add to your cost.

The Stingray will sure turn heads but if you get deep into the portions it's smaller than the Grand Sport and Z06. But there is no visual impact of that. The Stingray is 176.9 inches long right from its elongated headlights to the muscle hunch rear. Width is rated at 73.9 inches from ear to ear. As for the height, its low roof says it all, though for the sake of stats the Stingray is 48.8 inches tall lower than all its competitors. The short wheelbase of 106 inches makes handling fun and easy. The central qual exhaust makes your presence felt and puts a full stop at this work of art.

Safety
6.0/10

The 2019 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray coupe offers speed, control, and practicality, though the lack of advanced driver assistance tech puts the safety angle in a haze. Still, Chevy infused a lot of safety features which takes care of the Stingray

Infiniti Q60 Red Sport 400 Vs Chevrolet Corvette Stingray

While the Stingray propels on performance the Q60 is more on the luxury forefront. Its V6 engine is powerful and drills out a respectable 400 horses, though it's not enough to beat the Corvette. The Q60 Coupe is based on its sedan version so there is not much difference. The Corvette, on the other hand, is also based on a muscle car but it's a completely different creature.

In terms of acceleration and handling the Q60 can hardly beat the Corvette, while the Infiniti can save a few bucks with its better fuel economy. Chevy's practicality is surprisingly better than the Q60 which is a big thing since it's a Luxury Coupe. The fact that both cars are offered at the same price makes the Corvette a better choice.

Dodge Challenger R/T ScatPack Vs Chevrolet Corvette Stingray

Dodge Challenger is a true-blue American muscle with a big engine and overwhelming power. The Stingray might not win the horsepower war but it sure is more nimble to drive and handle those horses. When it boils down to battle, the Corvette matches the Challenger in terms of speed.

The Corvette unveils surprises on every level and this time it's with its better fuel economy. In terms of practicality, both cars feature a similar cargo bay. Both cars are winners in their own area, your choice will depend on whether you want a gas guzzling muscle or a practical sports car.

Porsche 718 Cayman Vs Chevrolet Corvette Stingray

This entry-level Porsche is remarkably one of the most fun to drive sports cars at this price. Porsche has a knack for handling which is clearly visible on the 718. The Corvette is also built to cut corners but you cannot beat the curator of the handling premise, still its low power is killing its game against the Corvette.

It's the least powerful car in the lot, though the low weight makes speeding up easy, it's not enough to beat the Corvette. Efficiency is where the 718 starts to shine and practicality makes it even more sensible choice. Comparing both, the Corvette is a better choice for your money but you cannot ignore the laser-sharp handling that the 718 possesses.

Final Verdict
8.6/10

Equate the Corvette's looks and performance in monetary terms and you will overquote the Chevy's price tag. Corvette brings the American sports car game into the German league. This is the C7 generation which has knocked the previously successful designs out of the park. Though the styling can be outrageous and overdone for some people. Practicality is generally collateral damage in a sports car but the Corvette managed to keep its boot space relatively alright, which is a good thing. Going with the Corvette is not a bad idea, it is probably the best sports car under $70,000.
