2019 Chrysler Pacifica Review

Pros

  • Quick and easy access to the full cargo bay
  • Curvaceous exterior design
  • Excellent visibility
  • A lot of safety and convenience features

Cons

  • Second and third-row seats receive less space than competitors
  • Clunky 9-speed automatic transmission

Starting from the base price of $26,985, the 2019 Chrysler Pacifica comes in six trim levels harboring a similar 3.6L V6 engine paired to a 9-speed automatic transmission. The engine drills out 287 horsepower and 262-pound feet of torque.

Overview

Minivans have long been the workhorses of the automotive world but today vans have ascended from a boxy commuter image. The 2019 Chrysler Pacifica is a testament to that fact as it offers all the modern amenities that a sedan or an SUV could offer at its price point. Even in terms of design, it has set new ambitions for the minivan segment.

It's is in fact a curvaceous van that does not compromise on practicality and economy. Though not much has changed since its revamp in 2015, it's still going strong with the mantle of the most handsome minivan in town. With the 2019 model year, it is offered in six different trims with a starting price tag of about $27,235.

Pricing and Features
8.0/10

The Chrysler Pacifica is quite a large van that is crafted to home a diverse family similar to other minivan's lineup. As mentioned above, there are six trims: L, LX, Touring Plus, Touring L, Touring L Plus, and Limited. There is also a Hybrid variant for the Pacifica that is priced at about $40,245. This Chrysler features a monochromic 3.6L V6 engine and a 9-speed automatic transmission. The Base trim is loaded with features and it gets better with each trim. The Base L trim starts as low as 27 grand and goes all the way to 45 grand. It only offers a front-wheel drivetrain with all the trims as no all-wheel drivetrain is offered.

Engine and Performance
7.9/10

The Chrysler Pacifica feels pretty peppy to drive around the city. It's been three years since there is no change in the design spectrum and so is its powertrain. Inside the hood, the Pacifica hides a 3.6 L V6 engine mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission. The power station cranks out 287 horsepower and 262-pound feet of torque. Although there is no other engine option, Pacifica's power is the best in the class. The power delivery is smooth and has plenty of punch for what is needed.

Initial acceleration is smooth without any delays, the 9-speed automatic transmission is natural but can feel clumsy at times. There is no major disturbance in changing gears though. You can cruise through the freeway without any interruptions but overtaking fast-moving vehicles can be tricky.

The minivan segment is the land of cut-throat competition. Every brand offering is priced the same and delivers the same power and features. Just for the sake of comparison, the Pacifica is the most powerful minivan in the segment along with Ford Flex.

Acceleration

A minivan is not meant to go hard and fast but the Chrysler is not outright disappointing when it comes to acceleration. The engine is punchy but you need to be a little heavy footed to drill out the acceleration. The initial acceleration feels sluggish, but as you jab the pedal with all your might, the Pacifica starts to shine. This boxy van takes 7.4 seconds to complete the 60 mph run, which is pretty fair for a minivan. For the quarter-mile segment, the Pacifica hits the mark in 15.6 seconds, pretty average to other vans in the segment.

Though Pacifica's performance is fair it's not the best in its class. The Honda Odyssey is also known as the epitome of minivans is better at accelerating and its 6.6-second acceleration removes all doubts. Then comes the Ford Flex with its competitive 7-second acceleration. Kia Sedona is the potential lager in the lot if you talk about acceleration.

Ride and Handling

Being a minivan the Pacifica offers a decent ride and feels quite maneuverable. The steering is light and has a central feel to it, however, the road communication might not be up to the point. But the steering instincts convey confidence on tricky roads. Then if we jump to body roll, yes there is some, especially on twisty roads. Pacifica's boxy shape sparks body roll at high speeds but it is not unnerving. The transmission is where you need to improvise, downshifts are long, and constantly look for the right gear in traffic. When it comes to the ride, the softly sprung suspension absorbs most bumps and potholes in its stride.

Braking

Minivans are known for their utilitarian nature with good reliability ratings and the Pacifica is no different.  What contributes to Pacifica's reliability when it comes to driving dynamics is its braking. The pedal is easy to modulate and relatively has a short travel distance and the response is immediate too. The Front brakes are rated at 13 inches and so is the rear. From the speed of 60 mpg, the Pacifica took 119 feet to come to a stop.

Compared with other vans the Pacifica is a lighter van, hence the reason for its good performance in the panic brake test. Vans like Kia Sedona boast their competitive braking while still having the bulky weight, others like the Ford Flex don't share a similar competitive vibe.

Fuel Economy
4.0/10

If minivans were to trade utility for efficiency, this segment won't have survived. Minivan efficiency is what brings soccer moms or any family guy to Chrysler's showroom. Thus the V6 powertrain is extremely efficient and better than some of the prime players in the minivan segment. In the city, you can expect an efficiency of 18 mpg that stretches up to 28 mph on the highway. Together you have a combined mileage of 22 mpg which is pretty average for a minivan.

Chrysler's fuel-efficiency numbers are average for the class. When you have vans like Dodge Caravan and Honda Odyssey then competition hits a dead end with no winner, as far as the economy is concerned. The Ford Flex is left dry with its 19 mpg mileage, making it the lager in the lot.

Interior
8.5/10

The Pacifica offers quite a versatile cabin and does not skimp on features just because it's a minivan. You can use the Pacifica for daily commuting or for going camping on the weekend, the limit to the versatility of its interior. Pacifica can seat seven to eight people at one time depending on which second-row seating option you pick. You can either go for the bench or the captain's chair. While it offers all the modern amenities, it does offer hard plastics in a lot of places. With that, the second row is also not as spacious as some of its rivals. However, the seats offer supreme bolstering and support even for tall passengers.

The seats sit high above the ground but the low ground clearance compensates for the same. Access to the second row is through a sliding door which has a decent opening. The third-row access is easy too and can comfortably accommodate three adults. The ergonomics are well sorted too.

With large windows and thin pillars, visibility is a strong point on the Pacifica. The quality of the interior is nice with a lot of soft touches but the same cannot be said for the poor material used on the steering. The seats feature a stow-n-Go system when the seats could be folded into the floor. Other features like the Conversation mirror gives parents full access to what their children are doing at the back. If you talk about the interior design it is one hell of a minivan and indicates how much minivans have changed in all these years.

Interior Features-

  • 8 Passenger Seating
  • 2 Additional Key Fobs (Fleet)
  • Alloy Seats
  • Uconnect 4C Navigation With 8.4" Display
  • Single Rear Overhead DVD System

Cargo volume

The 2019 Chrysler Pacifica is big and utilitarian when it comes to cargo space. With all seats up the Chrysler, it delivers 32 cubic feet of cargo volume. A great feature about the Pacifica is the stow-n-go feature which allows you to fold the second and third-row seats into the floor to open the full cargo bay. The full Pacifica cargo bay is rated at 140. 5 cubic feet which are nice but not the best in the lot.

The Honda Odyssey is the best of the lot with its 158 cubic feet of cargo. Other vans like the Caravan and the Kia Sedona are similar to that of the Pacifica. Also, the Ford Flex is larger with its 83 cubic feet of cargo volume.

Exterior
8.0/10

Although the majority of minivans look the same, the all-American Chrysler Pacifica adds a little flair to the design. It's the most curvaceous van modeled over the boxy body which is a strong design statement. The Chrysler's logo and grill look better than ever and feel like it was built exclusively for this van. Despite big dimensions the Pacifica mystic makes it look smaller, however, it's a big van and its cabin says it all.

The Pacifica's soft exterior and curvaceous metal sheet make it stand out amongst other minivans. The Pacifica is 10 inches longer than a full-fledged executive, its width is rated at 79 inches and height at 70 inches. However, the ground clearance of 5.1 inches is lower than most of the vans in the segment. The wheelbase is rather large courtesy of the lengthy overhangs.

  • MOPAR Running Boards/Splash Guards
  • MOPAR Splash Guards - Vehicle Set
  • Tri-Pane Panoramic Sunroof

Safety
9.6/10

The Chrysler Pacifica features a long list of safety features along with a strong core safety. NHTSA and IIHS tested the 2019 Chrysler Pacifica, and the van excelled in both. IIHS names the Pacifica as its Top Safety Pick+ and NHTSA awarded it with an all-star rating. As said earlier the list of safety features is long with active safety features like blind-spot monitoring, rear parking sensors, cross-traffic alert, and more. Other driver-assist features include automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist.

Competition
7.0/10

2019 Chrysler Pacifica vs Dodge Grand Caravan

Dodge Caravan is exactly what the idea of an ideal van looks like. It has space for seven and it's a spacious van. Similar to the Pacifica there is enough power to counter the city's traffic and hit the country road on the weekend. However, the Pacifica feels much more modern and value for money than the Dodge.

Though it's a decent van and matches everything the Pacifica does, as a buyer, you cannot resist Pacifica's futuristic look. Also, in terms of economy, Chrysler is a little more efficient. Considering there is not much difference in the price, the Pacifica is a clearly better choice.

2019 Chrysler Pacifica vs Honda Odyssey

The Honda Odyssey is the Chuck Norris of the minivan segment. It's the segment leader and boasts a higher price and power. In terms of dimensions and utility, the Odyssey delivers more than the Pacifica. The fact that this version of the Odyssey was launched last year and it's more practical.

In comparison to the Pacifica, the Odyssey is more nimble and child friendly. However, one thing which is absent in Honda is the Stow 'n Go seats. It's a tough choice, however, the Pacifica brings something with its design.

Final Verdict

Minivans used to be boxy, ugly, and just practical, the type of car you would only buy when you have to. However, the 2019 Chrysler Pacifica has surpassed the traditional minivan image. Its futuristic body and interior make it the most handsome minivan in the segment. The Chrysler's V6 engine cranks out enough power to do your family's chores in the city and cruise on the highway. The handling is good but not that great, you will find vans with better driving dynamics. Economy and practicality remain unrivaled and average to what other vans deliver.

Overall the price is synonymous with what other brands charge and the innovative design brings out something fresh to the segment.
