About 2019 Jeep Cherokee

3.8

Overall Rating

The Jeep Cherokee has always been one of the most renowned SUV’s in its segment for its tremendous off road abilities and practicality. People however expect more from Jeep in terms of what they add next to their Compact SUV and Jeep hasn’t been slow to respond.

After its second-gen launch in 2014, the Jeep Cherokee has been pretty consistent. However, things are not the same this year and the 2019 Jeep Cherokee gets a mid-cycle refresh. The 2019 Cherokee gets refreshed exterior styling, and new standard infotainment with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A new turbocharged 4-cylinder engine alongside hands-free liftgate are now available as options. Everything else remains pretty much identical.

The Limited trim offers a lot of premium features for its price and is the most feature friendly option for its asking price of $30,590. Grabbing the optional AWD would further help by addidng some extra off-road muscle to the Cherokee.

2019 Jeep Cherokee Review

Pricing and Features
7.0/10

The 2019 Jeep Cherokee comes in a lot of trim and variants with a lot of features and engine options. The base trim gets a 2.4-liter naturally aspirated motor while the other gets a standard 3.2-liter V6 which produces a lot more power than the former.

For 2019, Jeep has also added a new 2.0-liter turbocharged motor that delivers 271 hp and 291 ft-lbs of torque while returning a combined MPG of over 23. In terms of features, we have a familiar ascending order of features as we move up the trim levels. Thankfully, every 2019 Jeep Cherokee now gets an updated infotainment suite with enhanced connectivity options.

Trim to Choose - Our Recommendation.

The Limited trim offers a lot of premium features for its price and is the most feature friendly option for its asking price of $30,590. Grabbing the optional AWD would further help by addidng some extra off-road muscle to the Cherokee.

Engine and Performance
6.7/10

The 2019 Jeep Cherokee is available in a total of 3 engine configurations with the base Latitude model getting the familiar 2.4-liter inline-4 engine. The base engine is not the most athletic and does seem to struggle on highway speeds. The next engine available is standard, a 3.2-liter V6 that generates 271 hp and 239 lb-fts of torque. It's way more power packed in response than the base trim and offers a quicker acceleration and better towing capacity as well.

For 2019, the Jeep Cherokee also gets an optional 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 motor. With 294 ft-lbs of torque at its disposal, the new turbo four is a worthy upgrade over the base engine for those looking for a good punch without compromising on fuel economy. The turbo-4 and V6 engines are optionally available with the Latitude Plus and Limited Plus models while the range-topping "Overland" gets the V6 as standard. All the engines come mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission which is smooth and responsive in its business.

Among the competition here, all the rivals pack almost similar power with their base engines. However, the Jeep Cherkokee does have an edge over others with its optionally available V6 engine which pushes the power-output way beyond its rivals. The Chevrolet Equinox too has an optional 2.0-liter turbo pot but it just can catch up with the Jeep's V6.

Acceleration and Braking

More of a balanced daily driver, the Jeep Cherokee is no rapid sprinter for sure. However, it's not too shy either considering something of its size and class. With its standard 2.4-liter engine, the 2019 Jeep Cherokee races from 0-60 MPH in 7.6 seconds which is not bad at all. With the 3.2-liter V6 pot, the Cherokee does the same task in an even better 6.7 seconds.

Not the most spirited and the Cherokee's transmission is more on the relaxed and composed side. However, the strong mid-range does help this midsize SUV when squeezed harder. Despite being the heaviest among the competition here, the Jeep Cherokee is the quickest among the pack here. While the Volkswagen and Chevrolet are similarly quick, the Honda CR-V does the 0-60 MPH in a relaxing 9.1 seconds.

The 2019 Cherokee also comes with a good set of brakes which perform better than most would expect them to. The brake pedal offers good response while not feeling much squishy and spongy in feel. It offers a linear stop to the vehicle and is good enough, but not the best in the market for sure. While the Cherokee takes 128 feet to stop from 60-0 MPH, the CR-V does the same in 115 feet.

Ride and Handling

The 2019 Jeep Cherokee offers a pleasant ride experience even if it doesn't offer the most comfortable one. The suspension does a good job of absorbing smaller potholes and speed bumps with ease. The big potholes are where the Jeep's suspension fails to impress as the lack of damping in the suspension isn't enough to sustain those bumps. They translate into strong jolts that the passenger has to face making things a bit shaky inside.

In terms of the handling, the Cherokee surprises with its sporty handling. The steering wheel is neither very direct nor too mum and provides just the right amount of communication to the driver. Maneuvering and changing directions in the Cherokee is easy and the body roll is well controlled at high speeds or while changing directions. The chassis too feels poised and balanced at highway speeds despite its hefty weight.

Fuel Economy
6.5/10

One of the areas where the heft of the Cherokee hampers its parameters is in terms of its MPG figures. The standard 2.4-liter motor on the Cherokee is not the most economical and delivers a 25 MPG combined fuel economy. Interestingly, the more energetic and refined optional 2.0-liter turbo engine brings in good driving fun without sacrificing anything on economy. Infact, with the 2.0-liter turbo, the Cherokee offers a better 26 MPG combined economy.

When compared against its rivals, the 2019 Jeep Cherokee does fall short in terms of fuel economy. While the Volkswagen Tiguan with its 2.0-liter turbo motor offers similar economy as the base Cherokee, the Honda and Chevrolet fare better with their smaller engines. Both the Equinox and CR-V offer a handy 28 MPG combined fuel economy.

Interior
8.0/10

On the inside, the Jeep Cherokee draws good inspiration from its larger sibling, the Grand Cherokee. You get to see a familiar cabin layout with good build-quality and appropriate outward visibility as well. Nothing too fancy and there's a mixed use of some soft-touch elements on the upper dash and door-panels alongside some scratchy plastics here and there as well. Though the dashboard is mostly covered in black, you do get some silver accents around the infotainment screen, gear selector and the steering for some added visual drama.

As standard, the Jeep Cherokee comes with cloth upholstery and manual front seats. Moving up the trim table though, you do get access to soft leather upholstery with leather steering alongside heated and ventilated seats. The range topping model also gets memory for the driver's seat as well as sound-deadening windshield. The seats are wide and supportive with good comfort over long journeys and they have a very good height as well. You also get sliding rear seats in the higher models which eases the comfort levels at the back as well.

Jeep got mixed responses when they first showcased the 2019 Cherokee to the public because of the unconventional use of plastics around the front bumper and the weird design of the headlamps. This design however now looks very similar to the Grand Cherokee and that is a good thing. The slim headlamps and angled nose with seven-slot chrome grille give it a more youthful and sporty face.

The rear also has some unique elements like clear lens tail lamps and skid plates that accentuates the character of the SUV. Nothing fancy at the side but you do get chrome window-surround, roof-rails and a strong body crease that blends into the wheel-arches. The Jeep Cherokee ranks amongst the most compact SUVs in the segment in terms of its dimensions and helps itself with better maneuverability in tight spaces.
