2019 Mini Countryman Review

Treading away from the so-called 'Mini' badge, the MINI has again come back with its largest member of the family, the 2019 MINI Countryman Wagon.

Treading away from the so-called 'Mini' badge, the MINI has again come back with its largest member of the family, the 2019 MINI Countryman Wagon. Built on the same platform as that of the BMW X1, it shares many of its aspects with its rival along with some of its mechanical components. For a starting price tag of about $26,900, this MINI offers an automatic as a no-cost option in most models with a 6-speed manual on offer as well. It gives you an option to choose between the standard 134-horsepower turbo-3 engine or an optional 189-horsepower 2.0-liter turbo-4 motor.

Pricing and Features
8.0/10

The MINI Countryman line-up offers 6 models, Cooper Countryman, Cooper S Countryman, Cooper Countryman ALL4, Cooper S Countryman ALL4, John CooperWorks Countryman ALL4, and Cooper S E Countryman ALL4, with a base price of $26,900 and goes up to $36,900 and offers an option to choose between either 6/8 speed Automatic or 6/8 speed manual transmission in select variants. The only difference between these models is what lies under the hood.

Other than that, a Countryman can be had in 3 trims, Classic, Signature, and Iconic. Classic is the least expensive trim offering only standard features, while the Signature provides some additional features like choice of paint color etc. Finally, the Iconic trim offers every feature from the Classic and Signature trim and some extra personalization options.

We recommend

To get the best value for your money, the Iconic All4 Trim is the variant to go for as it gives a ton of personalization options to choose from along with some extra body colors, including the iconic British Racing Green color.

Engine and Performance
7.9/10

The Mini Countryman Wagon comes with a 1.5L engine as standard, which feels relatively underpowered as it produces a mere 134 hp and 162 lb-ft of torque. The much more powerful 2L inline turbo 4-cyl engine, on the other hand, has a much better power output of 189 hp and 207 lb-ft of torque compared to the base model. Only the S badged Countryman comes with this powerful engine that feels much smoother and refined than the base 1.5L motor.

The third engine option was introduced in 2018. The S E is the first plug-in model of the Countryman which features a 1.5L three-cylinder engine mated to a synchronous motor that produces 65kW and 118 lb-ft of torque. This Mini also gives the buyers an option to choose from either a 6-speed manual or an 8-speed automatic transmission. The gearshifts on the Countryman Wagon felt quite snappy and smooth, courtesy of a well-tuned ZF gearbox. However, it’s hard to call it a driver’s delight, especially if you choose the base engine option.

Because of its shared platform with the X1, the Countryman shares many stats with it and the most potent 2L turbo engine, which the Countryman JCW features. The X1 leads the pack as the most powerful car with a power output of 228 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. The MB GLA 250 takes second place with 208 hp, followed by the Countryman with 189 hp and the Encore (138hp) standing at the end. The engine sounds lively and powerful with a heavy not, which can be felt while driving. The BMW X1 takes the pole position with a maximum power output of 228 hp.

How fast is the 2019 Mini Countryman Wagon?

Under the skin, the more powerful Countryman Wagon boasts a 2-liter motor that produces 189 hp that gets this car moving. The acceleration feels not as fast when driven at partial throttle in Green and mid-driving modes.

When operated in sports mode, the car gives a peppy feeling once you stomp onto the gas pedal. The gas pedal is quite responsive but feels slightly on the heavier side. However, even with the more powerful engine, the Countryman Wagon does not win any awards when sprinting.

The acceleration feels quick, but when compared to its competitors, the BMW X1 (6.1 sec) takes the lead, followed by the GLA 250 (7.1 sec), then the Countryman (7.2 sec), and the Encore (8.4 sec), finishing at the last. Thus, the Countryman Wagon manages to do the bare minimum when it comes to not coming last.

How is the Braking Performance?

Like most Mini cars, the Countryman Wagon also gets a powerful braking setup. The brake pedal feels responsive with a fair amount of resistance to the foot. The braking feels quite smooth, but in the S E model, the brakes feel quite harsh, thanks to the hybrid setup. However, overall, the car manages to stop under a safe braking distance in every scenario.

When the weight is considered, the Mini is the heaviest of all and takes a little less to come to a standstill from 60 mph. Thus, it is a testament that this is the best performing car in its class when it comes to braking.

How is the Ride and Handling?

The driving dynamics of the new Countryman Wagon make the car feel active and lively. The ride feels smooth and zippy while driving straight. The car manages to take corners quite easily due to its stable steering wheel. The ride feels plush due to the suspension system that handles the potholes and rough terrain without letting any turbulence affect the ride’s smooth flow.

Fuel Economy
7.9/10

The Countryman gets the 3 different driving modes that offer a unique driving experience and gives the car a unique character. The 3 driving modes are Green, Mid, and Sports. The Green mode is the eco mode in which the car becomes quite efficient and saves power when not needed. The gearbox and handling feel slightly on the heavier side during this mode. During mid-mode, the ride feels smooth but the throttle response feels sluggish. During Sports mode, the ride feels buttery smooth and feels sporty. During normal modes, the cabin feels quite, whereas, during sports mode, the cabin gets slightly filled with the rumbling sounds coming from the engine.

While on highways, the Bimmer takes the pole position for the most fuel-efficient car, and when on city roads, the Buick takes the crown while others follow it. Overall the Buick takes first place in fuel economy, followed by the other 3 at the second position.

Interior
7.6/10

Mini has upped its quality for the interiors which feels quite up to the mark with the best in its class. With some near-luxury accommodations, the interior feels plush and well put together. Mini offers leather seats as standard, along with never-ending options to personalize the interiors to suit the rider’s style. The interior feels quite spacious and roomy that can even fit a 6ft tall person with ease.

Mini has left a touch of its signature style into the interiors as well, which feels quite chic. With a retro-style central console and dashboard that includes an oversized circular center console and toggle switches, the interior feels quite advanced with every control at fingertips.

While driving at green or mid modes, the cabin feels quiet due to the presence of an acoustic system inside the, cabin which insulates the cabin. While at sports mode, the engine’s rumbling sound slightly enters the cabin but makes the ride more thrilling and fun.

Getting in the rear seat feel slightly tricky due to the large seats, but once inside, the extra inches make it easier to stretch the knee. The same goes for the headroom. The only flaw in the interior that makes sitting at the rear less fun is the presence of a huge bar in the cethatwhich blocks the panoramic view of the panoramic roof.

What is there to keep you entertained?

The Countryman's infotainment has all the quirky features that many people would like. Mini has added a 6.5" touchscreen which is colorful and vibrant, and also responsive. The graphics displayed on it are of high resolution and vibrant.

The infotainment uses an upgraded version of BMW's iDrive software, which has great animations and transitions included in it. Also, Mini has added a clever thing into the infotainment, called the analyzer page which shows the driver's fuel efficiency for a ride.

How big is the cargo space?

The boot space provided by the Countryman Wagon is significantly less when compared to its platform-sharing sibling, the X1. The BMW X1 (27.1 cu.ft.) bags the first place followed by the Buick (18.8 cu.ft.) then the GLA 250 (17.2 cu.ft.) and the Countryman (15.9 cu.ft.) Finishing at the last.

However, you still get enough space to store your weekend worth of luggage.

The 2019 Countryman also has an under-seat hidden storage compartment under the driver's seat. The cargo space can also be increased when the rear seats are folded down.

Exterior
7.5/10

The Countryman is the smallest car when compared to its rivals but still manages to be spacious enough to accommodate 5 persons comfortably. The Cooper easily maintains a balance between its size and interior space.

It offers a more retro look and it is not very easy to mistake it for any other car in its class. Its signature look does bring a lot of emotions to the table. However, if you are looking for an aggressive or a wagon that looks quick, you will be disappointed.

In terms of ground clearance, the bimmer takes the lead, followed by the Countryman. Though they are built on the same platform, the X1 has the upper hand in terms of ground clearance and becomes a good contender for off-roading because of their beefed-up specs.
