2019 Nissan 370Z Review

Pros

  • Nimble Handling
  • Great performance for a V6
  • Good value for money
  • Sturdy and reliable

Cons

  • Standard equipment and features could be better
  • Only a 2 seater
  • Infotainment system seems lacking

Competing with the 370Z here are some of the most renowned names in the industry. The Ford Mustang Coupe, the Dodge Challenger and the Chevrolet Camaro.

Overview

The 370Z is an icon of the automobile industry. Nissan’s lightweight champion, which has taken on the best in the industry and come up victorious. Talk about the massive fan following if this car, or the sheer volume of modified versions of this vehicle showing its true potential, the 370Z is a force to be reckoned with. But don't think for a second that this means it isn't capable of sophistication. Slathered with top of the line safety and comfort features, the Nissan 370Z is built to fit any kind of driver.

Pricing and Features
6.0/10

The 370Z is offered in 3 trims priced between $30K and $38K. Each trim has a 3.7L V6 paired to a 6 speed manual, however, they can be upgraded to a 7 speed automatic.

Engine and Performance
8.6/10

The 3.7L V6 found in the 370Z here produces 332 horsepower and manages 270 lb ft of torque. It is mated to a 6 speed manual transmission, however, a 7 speed automatic transmission is also available. Performance numbers don't change depending on the transmission

Among the competition, the 370z manages to make the most power, but loses the title for torque to the Mustang. The Camaro also makes more torque than the 370Z here.

Acceleration

The 370Z is quick, reaching 60 mph from a standstill in just 5 seconds. The overall ordeal is smooth and vibrations are to a minimum. While the quick gallop, one doesn't feel at unease. The vehicle stays planted and well behaved.

8.9*

The 370Z and the Mustang tie for the quickest in the class. While the Camaro is a close second, the Challenger is some paces behind.

Handling

The best part of this car is the mechanical feel when you drive it. While still being safe, the driving here isn't assisted through heaps of electronic interference as we see more and more nowadays. The limited slip differential adds to the fun factor. The driving behavior is accurate and predictable. Nimble and lightweight steering takes little effort to steer.

Despite all the fun, the 370Z can be tame when you need it to be. It is more than capable of delivering a smooth cruising experience.

Braking

Top of the line performance demands top of the line brakes. Nissan has delivered on the most part. While the brakes themselves are splendid and the braking performance is decent if not the best, the modulation on the brake pedal feels a little too relaxed. Pedal travel is long and requires more pressure than one may be accustomed to.

Braking performance wise, the 370Z falls in the middle of the pack. While the Mustang and the Camaro take up much more distance to stop going 60mph, the Challenger manages it in a surprisingly small distance.

Fuel Economy
7.1/10

Having a bigger engine means shotty fuel economy. That's simple math really. The 370Z’s massive 3.7L V6 engine is one thirsty mistress, managing only 17 miles to the gallon in the city. This number does improve on the highway, going up to 26, but isn't enough being honest. Add this to a 19 gallon fuel tank, and you have an average maximum range of 380 miles, which is the least in the class.

The Mustang has the best fuel economy here, however, cannot manage the best range thanks to its smaller than average fuel tank. The Camaro, while managing a decent fuel economy and having one of the biggest fuel tanks in the class, managed the most range of 437 miles combined.

Interior
6.0/10

The 2019 Nissan 370Z comes with just 2 seats, as should all 2-door coupes, as the rear seats are usually entirely unusable. While the seats are fairly comfortable, taller people might have a little trouble finding the sweet spot for their seats. This vehicle is not made to be the daily family car. The interior materials are quite premium though, and you can easily forget that you’re in a budget car. The front seats are well-padded and supportive and offer a level of comfort not usually seen in cars of this price bracket. The base model doesn’t have active noise cancellation, which means the cabin gets a bit loud when driving fast. Other than that, vibrations, if ever noticeable, can sometimes creep into the cabin.

The 370Z is at an obvious disadvantage as all the competitors here have semi usable rear seats. The Challenger especially has the best rear seats in a coupe, period.

Cargo Area

A cramped trunk only allows 6.9 cubic feet of storage space. This isn't enough to fit too much luggage. Long trips are out. However, the trunk itself is neat and easily accessible. A wide entry area makes loading whatever luggage that fits easy.

Infotainment system

The presence of a 7 inch touchscreen doesn't full away from the glaring fact that the Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are absent. There is USB and bluetooth connectivity for smartphone connectivity. The speakers are of high quality.

Exterior
8.7/10

The 370Z has always been a small car. When comparing it to its so called rivals, the 370Z always seems petite. This becomes obvious when we talk about storage or rear seat space as the longer cars will have more of it. Other than that, the look of the 370Z is iconic. The angular headlights, the sporty silhouette, all remind us of the 370Z familiar predecessors.

Lightest in the class helps give the 370Z an advantage when it comes to performance and drivability. Lowest in ground clearance though. The Challenger is the heaviest here, which makes its braking performance even more impressive.

Safety
5.5/10

Nissan has not skipped out on the safety front here. Along with incredible construction and sturdy built, the 370Z gets a great amount of safety features. Some are:

  • Dual-stage supplemental front airbags with seat belt and occupant classification sensors
  • Driver and passenger seat mounted side-impact supplemental airbags
  • Roof-mounted curtain side-impact supplemental airbags for occupant head protection
  • Vehicle Dynamic Control with Traction Control System
  • Seat belts with pre-tensioners and load limiters
  • 3-point ALR/ELR passenger seat belt system (ELR for the driver)
  • Active head restraints
  • Energy-absorbing steering column
  • Top tether anchors
  • Zone body construction with front and rear crumple zones
  • Hood buckling creases
  • Aluminum side-door guard beams
  • Tire pressure monitoring system

Competition
8.0/10

2019 Nissan 370Z vs 2019 Ford Mustang

The Mustang and the 370Z seem like a breed apart. Although both are performance coupes, they seem to have such a different approach when it comes to their characters.

The Mustang with its punchy inline 4 and the Nissan with its massive V6 seems almost out of place in this comparison. The 370Z has a clear advantage over the Mustang here. At least until the Mustang gear up with its grunty 5L V8.

2019 Nissan 370Z vs 2019 Dodge Challenger

If you want rear seats you can actually sit in, a trunk which can actually be called a trunk and a decent fuel economy, get the Challenger. Otherwise, the 370Z wins.

2019 Nissan 370Z vs 2019 Chevrolet Camaro

The Camaro seems to be the underdog here. However, with good fuel economy, great features, and spacious interiors, it holds its own niche.

Final Verdict

The Nissan 370Z will most likely not be your one and only vehicle. It wasn't built to be the practical, everyday drive most people expect. This isn't the car to get if you're worried about cost per mile, packing for a long trip or frankly, a third passenger. This is the vehicle to get if you want to experience the thrill and grunt of a proper sports car and inject thrill into your life. Although completely capable of being a daily driver, the Nissan 370Z is for people who wish to fall back into their seats between stop signs.
